#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”
"Nginda Nyangum" Welcome to tonight, before we start we acknowledge the traditional teachers of our land https://t.co/CxaRCA5RKX
Nginda Nyangum from the far far north
I'm torn between wanting to indulge my GoT nerd & feeling it's a jarring metaphor for education.
But on 2nd thoughts, warring factions, multiple conflicting leaders, mythical creatures ...
... Maybe there's something in the comparison.
I wish to begin by acknowledging the Wathaurong people of the Kulin nations, the traditional owners of the land
A1: Am I alienating myself by confessing I’ve not watched GoT?
I thought we were talking about GameofDrones! "The capacity to learn is the mightiest of possessions!"
Hi Carl from Emerald, Vc
May have upset the time space continuum as I am downloading 2 videos at same time as doing this
I'm in this boat. Uni took over https://t.co/PSD92MwKlj
A1: Am I alienating myself by confessing I’ve not watched GoT?
Oh oh, I realise I am going to be quite lost tonight. I have no idea about this game (?) Is it even a game?
No worries mate, I've watched maybe 15s of it!
Hi - HS Sci teacher from Sydney here who has never seen an episode of GoT... but interested to see where this chat takes us :)
Sorry must watch the Homey Badger on Sunday night!
Ive never seen GoT either....maybe that means we are part of special club.
Jo from Melb, too scared to adopt one fav -they keep getting killed!
All other questions will have a pedagogy focus! Don't worry no stress of context
Cameron from Melbourne, would like to think Jon Snow
Me either, but sounds interesting https://t.co/x6zr13GPaR
Oh oh, I realise I am going to be quite lost tonight. I have no idea about this game (?) Is it even a game?
A1; hmm that is really a though question! only watched the first 3 seasons of the series, read the books since 98..
Teachers and Kmart. We own some of this stuff
Probably the one with the big swords!
Probably the one with the big swords!
“: A1: Am I alienating myself by confessing I’ve not watched GoT? ” < me neither :)
Hi all. Sandor!! Watching glory whilst attempting to follow the chat...ps. I've seen the first GoT ep?! More Walking Dead than GoT
Yes I'm with Kelly. never seen it but heard it talked about a lot on a podcast i listen too https://t.co/KUZECjjuFT
Hi - HS Sci teacher from Sydney here who has never seen an episode of GoT... but interested to see where this chat takes us :)
Eeep, running late .Anna here
Now you’re talking my language! Let me tell you a story…
"Ninna marni" is the Kaurna language greeting
. I love Tyrion Lannister mentally. Jon Snow for obvious reasons but connect with Daenerys Targaryen.Dragon & ideals
Given my Lion like appearance I am clearly a Lannister. On weekdays, Jamie but on the weekend Tyrion!
Good morning from Spain. language teacher
Hi Maree here - havent seen GoT - so I'll go with whatever character that's a legend :-) LOL
If he goes i'm done watching !
A1. Haven't watch a lot of GOT, but the chick with dragons gotta rock...right?
I don’t have an excuse as valid as yours!
hi Jon from Perth Hills here, can I pick Hodor?
I read the books a few years ago, and don't remember much. But I'll try!
Kmart should have us do a 'teaching with Kmart article'
I'll be alienated with you (can you be alienated together?!). I'm learning a bit tonight; currently in listening mode
Q1 "A small man can cast a long shadow" Which teachers do you follow on twitter cast long shadows? https://t.co/Kt0lmjmTBE
and from all around the world we come
Thanks, there are swords eh, I know there's a dragon I think!
Z from SYD more into suits & house of cards than GoT but always open to new experiences, welcome to tonight!
I love Tyrian Lannister for his use of brains& bravery to speak up. Not such a fan of his womanising...
Not a Sox character then?
Joel from Bris, tech coach & teacher. I'd hate to say I connect with any character from GoT. Everyone is a little too...sordid.
I don't know the show well enough to select a character. Only remember pressing fast-forward through the dog scene.
Given my lion like appearance I am clearly a Lannister. On weekdays, Jaime but on the weekend....TYRION!
Hi- Lux from Sydney- looking forward to tonight's chat
. Hope Jon Snow returns from what seems to be the dead and Arya Stark for that matter
A1 I'll relate to any character who annoys those in authority
And in the staffroom, seems like every teacher I work with watches it
Dylan Wiliam all the way!
A1. Where do I start?!?! Apart from my PLN I would have to say & would definitely be big shadow throwers
The thing I enjoy about GoT characters is the ambiguity of good vs bad; most are on a sliding continuum of likeability & power
Cathy from Brisbane. Not a huge fan, but liked Ned Stark until they killed him
To feast, to share on one another's offerings! Is GOT-like?
ha ha ha He just told me nobody has watched as it hasn't even started!!! TOld you was going to be lost :P
Deep question! Truly deep! My Twitter hero has to be the biggest shadow ever cast!
I'm hoping they both win the game!
Suits addict at the moment!
I think Arya... Black sheep of the family, breaking Asian gender role stereotypes
Robyn from QLD. Tough first Q! Bronn - prepared to fight for my adolescent students & Middle Years philosophy
Stick with me, young angel and we'll emerge victorious!
If there's a Dragon, I'm going with that
A1: are a few of my favorites. When I need a boost they get me going!
A1 has been influencing me a lot of late!
A1; think 90% if of those i have sorted in my lists, cast longs shadows in some way or another
Wow, then that's me, a DRAGON!
I'll be honest, is not a lot taller than me, so I follow him! I like to think we learn a little from one another!
it's a real problem in this game -
A1 and give me some great inspiration for PBL and action research to improve my practice for students
Me too - you should have seen my cash course in GoT today!
A1 - are just a few of my faves
A1 thats easy - long shadows cast by the crew and all those that follow - reaches across times zones and continents
A1 thats easy - long shadows cast by the crew and all those that follow - reaches across times zones and continents

Ditto...primary teacher from Perth following tonight with curiosity 🙈🙊🙊 https://t.co/sy4kX4VLX0
Hi - HS Sci teacher from Sydney here who has never seen an episode of GoT... but interested to see where this chat takes us :)
A1 Depends on what I want to know, I follow many who cast a long shadow.
A1 - Have to say Prince Oberyn. Justice driven and we share a hatred for pointless meetings! https://t.co/9g5b5tB9xT
A1 you would definitely be one. Quite a few around but have to check my list more closely
A1 pretty much most Ts i follow cast really long shadows
I'll be meeting Sarah next week in DC. Wahoo!

Hi, sorry I am late. What are we talking about? Plenty of GOT pictures. Oh, we are talking about GOT. Is this thread NSFW? :)
A1 After Easter I tend to be casting a wide shadow more so than a long one has a slenderman level shadow
She is most definitely one. Not only for tech stuff (big fan!) but her educational thinking is brilliant https://t.co/4AkT8elCB0
getting the concept now. Long shadows, I'm a Google app fan, is a fav Sorry, dont want GoT https://t.co/ab2DHprO6B
Q1 "A small man can cast a long shadow" Which teachers do you follow on twitter cast long shadows? https://t.co/Kt0lmjmTBE
Great. Was planning on starting small with Maths. Already changed science for T2, Humanities may be the next to go
A1: Its really hard to tell how tall most of the people on Twitter are, but & are some:

Q2 "A dragon is no slave!" What tools have freed the teaching and learning in your classroom? https://t.co/Cqw73UqvWD
And the whole load of preservice teachers floating around which keep me very much entertained with thoughts.
Damn, that beats animal fur and scary faces ANY day!
Hi Charlotte in Melbourne arriving late to Q1 too many great influencers, however are a couple
I was worried about the time factor, getting it all done, the uptake. Response tells me to do more
A1 still, I'm slow. fan of FL, so casts a big shadow, hey Joel!
A1 casts a long shadow for Ss with specific needs....love that!!!!
Can I say , for keeping it light & humorous 😂
A2 - Most recently Hapara Dashboard. I can't imagine how I have survived using GAFE with my kids for so long without it!
A2; no can truly free it, they all have their limits and bind you in another way, its not the tool, it's how one use it
A2 GAFE are amazing for communication, collaboration and organisation for Ts and Ss
and also cast long shadows
I resonate with the High Sparrow for sure. Love his perception of no class structure in a highly ordered class structure.
A2: This iTouch and Twitter have been the biggest tools of change in my world. Start with the mindset change and other things come
I want to keep the list going
A2: As a maths teacher, has unlocked my teaching!
A2 is the dragon I've tamed and of course the little monster named Twitter, both loyal to me now!
A2 HODOR! HODOR.. wireless, breaking the chains to the front of the classroom.
But loving stile app and missing GAFE currently.

A2: has been pretty good at helping info flow within our dept. Great for teams! I like it! Also
I have no idea about but I'm going to sit on the fence and say shadows can be sometimes useful! Are they positive or neg??
A2: Not so much the tools, more the knowing that there are crazy, like minded educators out there as me! https://t.co/leK0eCKiWV
No worries -it's awesome to know what's happening in schools interstate and globally. You guys keep us in the loop
Trust me,the feeling's mutual, us oldies need the energy of the young, the passionate, the future!
Wifi 2nite reminds me of Ћ RAS night😕
A2 Google Classroom is the main platform for integrated STEM projects. All work and resources in one place, easy collaboration
A2 give me so much flexibility to differentiate and personalise.
I'm very supportive of and the Wheel - Pedagogy before technology and says
A2: Twitter has had a huge impact on my teaching. Also love my IWB. a great app esp handy for Ts who have many classes
I love Google Docs, great for collaboration
I'm actually loving iTunesU for my low ability year 7 class. Puts all the resources in 1 place for them. And they can not lose it.
Tweet deck frozen already & A1 replies still coming through! Epic start to chat AEST! We're back! ☺️
A2: Anything that let me get away from the front of the room. For me that was being able to make a video. Webcam and youtube.
A2 “Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side?”
staying the GoT references universe, all of you who says GaFE, isn't it just "another" master to serve?
A2 I've just started using the Orange Slice Add-on for Google Docs. Made giving students digital rubrics simple!
Twitter itself has opened up a world of new ideas for me ...
Likewise my friend, better giving and taking there is in ED PLD IMO.
- my students love it - so easy to use - no complicated menus- every day go to
A2. Incorporating the flipped classroom has helped me cover content deeper - need to help buy from Ss to show them benefits
A1. cast pretty long shadows for me... :) Oh! And :)
A2 Anything that allows my Ss to enjoy their learning. Trying hard to support parents & teachers to let go of pen & paper
Twitter has also had significant impact on my teaching & understanding of what's happening in other places https://t.co/zjENz90bA0

A2 tech has changed the way I can communicate, interact & engage with my Ss, & them with me
Me too, especially being a part of each week
love your thinking Anna (and the pics)
A2: Connecting with others on Twitter has given me confidence to push myself and try new things in the classroom
Winter is coming, thy master uses all that is Google, the wall is strong just not sure what the night walkers effects may be
the Padagogy Wheel sits next to my desk at work - refer to it all the time!
A2 Def 'Stile' - Was not keen at first, now can't live without it.
Can you pass that on to my team and principal?!
Of course, without , chats like this would be like fighting 1-3 dragons and not ending well!
I like Desmos - especially knowing is in it! I just know better!
YES! connection is powerful!
Q2 Tech has had major impact on Ss with language impairments or learning difficulties iPads, Text2Speech, Speech2text, podcasts...
haha love it - and agree!
Inspiring chatting with educators all over the world- it is my personal PD thank you
yes! Explain everything is excellent, both for flipped learning plus by students to demonstrate their understandings
A2. Personally blogging, twitter, Facebook, instagram & Pinterest. Supportive learning communities at the ready
A2: Twitter too has been awesome. Makes me think about being more concise. Less words = more thinking!
Totally agree and making sure that I involve myself in different teacher chats
do you have a forwarding email address or twitter handle
Great point. Trad. PD has very little appeal and benefit to me now. Outdated?
you have been busy Anna !
I don't use Tweetdeck. Haven't worked it out, got frustrated and went back old school
A2 The only thing GAFE is missing is support for the apple Pencil and Surface Stylus. When that happens, OMG!
Resist becoming a throner, there is no going back!
agree widens the range of possibilities & increases success
It needs to be dynamic and move. I want the nuts and bolts so I can back it up with research
rocks tonight Thx https://t.co/YEL22Cy96D
Tweet deck frozen already & A1 replies still coming through! Epic start to chat AEST! We're back! ☺️

A2: Blogging and tweeting has been huge for me this year. I'm a much more reflective practitioner now which can only be good.
When you teach it's win or die no try
Ha, nothing like procrastinating to find GoT quotes!
How much trad. pd do you go to and back channel on
Strategies that support collective efficacy for students, staff and parents & ensure info flows whether tech or old school is 👍🏻
That's impressive, does take a bit of getting used to, that's for sure, just like this chat! LOL
I use it frequently - helps to frame which apps could be most useful for which purpose
Any teachers in Perth on ? Need to add some Westralians to my twitter feed!
Two screens and the toggle button....works well and is something I can understand
My blog is slowly coming along as is my tweeting, loving both though
Don't do trad. any more, even school digital PLG Is done via GAFE, padlet etc.
When I need to confirm answers from the feeds and google. I could write a blog on this

Enjoying the chat tonight even though I’m a little late to the (red wedding) party
Next twitter chat should be themed "fast and furious" thats what tonights is!!
A2 has transformed classroom culture & relationships
from Perth but living O/S
A3: 1 mind is a candle, many can start a raging inferno! Same for edu - more great ideas can only be good! https://t.co/zwSRpjrxOv
A3. Through collaboration we crowd-source understanding & add to what is known. It is an essential in our learning ecosystem.
And activities as writing essays collaborate way, book trailer, exhibitions sway about women as this https://t.co/TheSfGOzi2
A3 teaching can be an isolating experience - collaboration means we all benefit from all experience.
Trouble with trad research is by the time it's published, it's often outdated!
A3 collaboration incorporates many key skills- time management, communication, problem solving. All prep for Ss future
A3) We need to collaborate to be able to give Ss a total learning experience rather than just what we know
A3. Collaboration helps to share knowledge that it can sometimes be hard for everyone to gather on their own
I love the way changed the way I can build authentic relationships with parents directly https://t.co/yErjzjJmoD
A2 has transformed classroom culture & relationships
Q2. Making connections and collaborating has freed the dragon! Learning from others... Love Twitter for this!
A3. Encourages student voices rather than ours. Students share their ideas & grow together. Love collaboration in writing.
A3: Because 1+1=3. My ideas are shaped by and shape the ideas of others. The diff between reflection (me) + evaluation is others!
as the inimitable says "we are always better together" honesty and willingness to fail. Trust is key!
Q3 Collaboration works when there is a common objective or passion but must have acknowledgement of everyone's input to continue
Great thinking and innovation!
A3 because communicating ideas with others helps make more sense of them in our heads and develop them furtherin many cases
A3: it’s king because we live in a collaborative world. This is point in case!
A3 Collaboration supports wellbeing - in all its forms
A3 Collective brilliance. Multiple great ideas come together as 1 brilliant idea. Critical friends are priceless
A3 Collaboration is King and twitter is the throne on which it sits - sunday evening & a bunch of Edu rockstars collaborating now
I'm currently out and keep checking feed. Antisocial? 😬
Its fairly simple. Nothing groundbreaking. Just imbeds a interactive rubric to a Ss doc and counts up their score
A3 was supposed to help bring teachers together online to share resources. Do many people use it?
A2 LM system most definitely, plus soooo many web 2 tools! &
A2/3. There are many ways we can bring edtech into collaboration now to give those quieter members of the group a voice...
A3 Collaboration is the key to providing a classroom that is inclusive & considerate of all needs. Being open to the idea is first
A3: United we stand. Divided we fall. That division can be ideas, words, pedagogy, whatever.
Couldn't agree more, was a focus area for me, so grateful @ how easy make connecting w/ parents https://t.co/hBv2s5v1kf
I love the way changed the way I can build authentic relationships with parents directly https://t.co/yErjzjJmoD
A2 has transformed classroom culture & relationships
Any teachers interested in joining a trip to Borneo this june? Get in touch - we have 3 spaces remaining!
A3. Collaboration out here allows for a broader range of ideas, views & support, which can be difficult in small communities.
A3 I have a lot of skills, but as part of a good team, that skill base grows exponentially
A3 We must remember there is labor on the middle of collaboration & it requires a team working together
By killing... opps I mean seeking out those who are common with us & being stronger through sharing!
Welcome aboard... Having loads of fun tonight
A3. Collaboration is the skills Ss will need to work because you can learn improve and be more together https://t.co/kJYaanZ2Ju
I just couldn’t imagine being solo in education. Isolation leads to madness. Thats no good for anyone.
Collaboration is smart practice! Shared possibilities, open to developing
A3: learning is complex and we need help. Hence the need for collaboration
A3 “A lord must learn that sometimes words, [reflections + actions] can accomplish what swords cannot.”
has transformed my classroom when it comes to pre- and post-testing! Ss LOVE it!!
Why should teacher voices be silenced? We are just as much a stakeholder as students.
https://t.co/GjWBn1uB4r
I love Clas Dojo. It has been such a success in building relationships in my class community.
A3. Because of the old saying two brains is better than one! What more can you say? Collaboration in the 21st century is a must.
A3: Sharing ideas and make them better looking at them through a different lens. (all men must die all, men must serve (trans)
with Twitter etc possible to learn about recent research from researchers without time lag
The market square appears organically. Twitter is the market square, so that's where people collaborate. Soz Scootle.
Great point. I love how solutions and robust but fair debate exists openly in THIS world.
Bahaha! I am feeling poetic this evening!
Building leadership density, coaching and having clear strategic directions can support collaboration having an IMPACT
A3: We foster by sharing. By letting my ideas become our ideas. Shaped by others, our ideas develop and take shape. That's good!
That's what got me really interested in growing my Twitter PLN....
Yep, I have my iPhone, iPad and laptop all smoking at the moment! https://t.co/FbSiWxjhoI
Two screens and the toggle button....works well and is something I can understand
. A3Working together gives Ss the best as they get everyones strengths & differences. Collaboratn helps extend lrng
True. I find behavioural research and effect size tables stay current
A3 you encourage it through modelling and creating the environment in which it is need it
Great point Charlotte. And if a finding fails, no time lost, we can move on and fast!
A3 Collaboration allows us to see beyond our classroom, beyond our subject area wch is pivotal for personal growth
check media for pics and Qs. The feed is too long.
Working with others collaboratively is empowering & opens door to possibilities - I can add & build to shared thinking
A3: collaboration - everyone has something of value to bring to the learning journey!
A3 With our connected world we must collaborate and be global ... many hands make light work! Two heads are better than one! ....
A3 - Collaboration is an excellent way for Ss to share knowledge outside the classroom then have the confidence to share in too
for the mention. Not sure what's the context 'cept for Nice you're participating there. Love edchats
Do you get worried that it encourages too much extrinsic motivation for students?
A3 difficult to know all about all students without chatting to others. Building skills by collaboration is the same. Build PCTK
student voice fits in perfectly with collaboration
A3 collaboration leads to connections being made, networks being built, ideas exploding, ripple effect
Schools put so much time into creating a meaningful school vision. Collaboration is often at its roots. Students, staff and comm'
A2: the camera , iMovie, screencasting, prezi have impacted but the dragon's in me
A3 We learn better with & from others, school culture thrives on collaboration, collegiality & shared purpose. Better together!
A3 For collaboration to truly be free, us kings and queens must give up our thrones to the peasants at least for some time.
We need to foster organic collaboration. That’s tough. Forced collaboration is fake!
. Game of Thrones user name has been liking my tweets all day lol
A3 Honestly, collaboration is important because more often than not someone has a better idea than me
resources yes but not communities
we must learn to lean in and support each other instead of closing our doors to change & innovation
Yes, I agree! Nothing worse than being expected to work with others without a joint purpose.

Individual ideas & perspectives come together to create a dynamic learning environment with collaboration https://t.co/TN05eI8Pr6

A2) Hello friends, sorry to be late to the party, Spiri from PA, G&T - EdTech tools: , animoto, iMovie app
A3 What about ? Is that well used by people or are you more likely to use traditional texts?
Because it sounds gripping and tense and violent and can be localised but substantial and justified.
Because it sounds gripping and tense and violent and can be localised but substantial and justified.
confidence is key too often kids are afraid to fail so they won't share.
Yes, Twitter is my absolute fav https://t.co/AJ1kicNICl
Twitter itself has opened up a world of new ideas for me ...
Im OK with Tweetdeck, just don't want to miss anything, I'm not doing a gr8 job with it I must admit https://t.co/OShly9zdHj
Glad its not just me who can't use Tweetdeck
Sorry guys, gonna have to duck out now. Birthday dessert is ready, and you don't say no to that!
A5 need to know more about the action research process - to do it properly.
Thought you’d gone all Shakespearean for a moment! :P
Teachers doing action research to test their own impact of initiative is the new paradigm!
A4; Hattie got some serious problems with his research, Fullan i don't know that much about, but is it the best way forward?
A4. These are not new every leading learner in the classroom looks for evidence of where we can help maximise individual learning!
LOL. Thanks for the clarification. I forgot the Eng summer is 3 days, sometimes 4!
29 brains are better than 2. Do you include your classroom in planning?
A3: Helping each other to uncover the rewards
Collaboration challenges us. In & out of classroom it takes us places & provides new views. https://t.co/fDwSzeNusO
Love this.................. https://t.co/3LK9K5WXvC
A3 For collaboration to truly be free, us kings and queens must give up our thrones to the peasants at least for some time.
Do you want my essay just submitted? Action Research + PLN Collaboration in Twitter you have hit a winner!
A4 One must always act and fight for one's present and future!
A4, AR has a lot of similarities to PBL, students get so much out of it
A4 Action research draws Ts out of their four walls & into a global education system
Yes, when they're in bed or with wine in hand
Thanks, it's great that I actually have no idea about GOT! LOL
Honestly I don't know what action research is
Action research comes from a need to know something. It has impact. It’s not purposeless!
have you come across the term 'practitioner inquiry' - fostered by Peter Taylor? hoping to engage this year
A4: You need a starting point, a reference, so that you know where you’ve been and where you are headed. https://t.co/T34815xj4W
A4: Could it be linked to that 'collaboration' idea? Is it working together to solve problems. As opposed to going it alone?
studies carried out in the course of an activity or occupation, to improve the methods and approach of involved.
Wow! I wonder if should have put a R rating on this chat or I'm just too young! LOL
A4 To me, AR is just good teacher practice. We should always be following that kind of cycle with our teaching
A4 action R- contextualised, evidence based, the learning is in the doing as you are living the lesson
Instead of being told what to implement, teachers measure their impact and decide what to do with the Ss
Important to check our understanding here. Are we cooperating or collaborating? What does both look like? Difference?
A4 I guess it is useful as proof that what we do scientifically works. what is your answer to this one?
Now I love it even more, sounds totally like it would come from the show (or so I think)
A4 Action Research enables diagnosis of practice to identify areas to focus attention to promote improved success
how might we breakdown the silos that people build? it's becoming a challenge for schools
A4 Action R encourages the T to look deeply and make their own judgements to suit their context rather than apply .xx as evidence
A4 provides evidence for pedagogy. Continues the learning process for Ts
A4 For those struggling. It's more formalised reflective practise essentially. and shared with others. https://t.co/djfrvLHlL3
A4 - It encourages both Ss and Ts to want to learn more but also a building block to where they've been
Action research is what effective reflective practitioners do at all times informally!
I totally agree to a degree
ltd research to support new pedagogues, action research provides data to see most effective tools and techniques
1 of the highlights of this term is listening to staffroom conversations about impact and teachers valuing data to improve impact
It's awesome learning and a great effort from the dark prince the dragon-whisperer?
A4 research & data must be actioned on so feedback is authentic
A4: AR, find problem to solve, research problem, develop action plan, do said plan, reflect on outcome, rinse and repeat ?
Exactly right Dennis. Confidence is key to students wanting to learn more too
we need to demonstrate impact. (Note demonstration is not limited to data) AR. Focuses effort and provides perspective
It's a long winter for some, have to keep warm 😳
Q4 Action research is only valuable if shared and reflected upon-has Gr8 power to change https://t.co/gQJLXXjjdP
Q4 "Pass the sentence/swing the sword" Fullan=Decisional, Hattie=Impact Why is Action R they way forward? https://t.co/3TwleiXR6j
A4 AR lets us collaboratively discover that which is not yet proven but that which impacts upon learners in our own settings
. No ?s .Looking on yr page A4. Tchers need to drive it yes. They understd & know what to look for.
A4. We did an action research project on flipping our Yr 12 Biology class - got excellent feedback but now I need to start again!
Ts need PD on how to design research and collect data, and how to present findings
some silos are very high made of solid bricks and mortar, hard to break down, but not all
That is teacher learning! As well as Student!
A4 It's the way forward if it allows teachers to pick up their passions and build their capabilities to be inquirers.
A4; if a teacher gonna measure everything to extend his/her learning towards ss, then the learning itself suffers
A4. If a T is taking the time to research then it has to have immediate impact on their teaching. Limited time to waste!!
A4 Action research characteristics: integrated, reflective, focused, relevant, collaborative, cyclical & active
A4. Can I reserve my answer until later in the year when I study a whole subject on action research at ?
we used action research in CAPC way back then.
Ts should still make informed decisions about what to implement & pref evidence base even if experimental
I love it when someone challenges the research. Why don't your like hattie?
It's not only the silos between subjects, but schools, systems and ed depts.
The way forward is taking research and applying it. Hattie has merit because he wants to put the student first .
Fullan talks of measuring an inch wide and a mile deep. Don't measure all, just what matters most https://t.co/9UFYjyRD2c
A4; if a teacher gonna measure everything to extend his/her learning towards ss, then the learning itself suffers
A4 Ahhhh action research YES YES YES “Power resides where men believe it resides. No more and no less.”
A4. Action research creates a +ive change that impacts significantly bc potential implication are readily accessible to practice
A4 Teacher led action research recognises that Ts r educational experts. Important for the profession & for the system
A4 I did research on playback speeds of vid lessons. 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x and 2x. Diff students liked diff speed. now we have a choice.
A5: Building positive relationships is key! First and foremost! Pedagogical Excellence without relationship is dead!
A4 AR scaffolds reflection and decision making for further improvement
A5 as always, by getting to know our students really well. We just have more tools now for this to occur
A4. I would like to see some research on 5 vs 10 week writing blocks. Always feel so rushed.
A4 action research is how we make meaningful changes in our own practice and in school
A5: we provide clear expectations, model, and develop procedures student can anticipate for their own learning!
There was some funding available for AR for schools not sure if its available this year. https://t.co/qtknmmcCYU
Ts need PD on how to design research and collect data, and how to present findings
would love a copy Mr Host.
A4) Action research is important because it assists Ts in improving/refining their craft, more empowering experience for Ts
This is a high priority if teachers want to be valued for what they do https://t.co/hXUSO9ASsk
Ts need PD on how to design research and collect data, and how to present findings
yeah pretty much. But AR sounds so much more fancy and important.
Correct, and things begin with open dialogue... https://t.co/wmS9Ek1l2Z
Ts need PD on how to design research and collect data, and how to present findings
A5. RRRRRAPPORT!!!! You cannot have a classroom of Ss willing to join the journey if you don't know them!
A5 With passionate Ts, empathy will create positive relationships with all stakeholders
. I mean Ts don't research what engineers are wking on. New P of a nearby sch not even T no idea how to lead curri
A5: it helps us to focus our time and energy on the things that matter!
By destroying the hearts and minds of the naysayers and using dragons for added impact. Surround with positivity!
A5 giving personalised feedback to every student using Google Docs has increased confidence. Ss now asking directly for feedback
A5: We need to trust that everyone is professional and that they want the best for Ss. We create equals! https://t.co/WuQUBNVP4H
The potential of Action Research is incredible as we become teacher researchers.
A5 If the soldiers are part of the battle strategy they will gladly follow the general to conquer all battles
A4: Monitoring progress is vital; it's not about Plan-Do - there has to be Study-Act in the improvement cycle
then he is the opposite of Hattie, wondering how they got put together for the Q then
Action Research chat in a few weeks ... let's talk https://t.co/zm77aoJuIb
Do you want my essay just submitted? Action Research + PLN Collaboration in Twitter you have hit a winner!
A5 by showing we care with words and actions. Sometimes that is all it takes
For your info Miss Levett, this character is in season 8 of GOT in a bit part!
Best way to waste a Sunday afternoon!
A5 Its all about building positive relationships ensuring you spend time reflecting directly on what you do for relationships
A5 I remember being told as a newby teacher - keep them engaged and behaviour won't be an issue. I think still very true1/2
Gr8 entry and exit ticket strategy https://t.co/MPssveLra8
A5 giving personalised feedback to every student using Google Docs has increased confidence. Ss now asking directly for feedback
A5: Students need to feel valued
Ah, I thought it was something new that I would need to learn about
yep, agree - thats why twitter is nice - no hierarchy - no walls - no borders
A5 Fostering relationships & providing a learning environment, resources, strategies & program that suits ALL, so Ss WANT 2 learn
Q5 T response/feedback; acceptance of mistakes & responsibility for learning; Ss learning how to give constructive peer feedback
A4: If you don't know the reality then don't construct a fantasy
a5 relationship is paramount. Engaged learners with purposeful learning and a connection to those around them.
A4 Action research is my PhD to a T! “A man who won't listen can't hear.”
A5. By treating the students well & knowing their story. Understand actions & provide a supportive space. New day each day
A5 to truly encourage positivity you must be positive and lead by example Ss can smell fear and see through fakeness
Q5 but how the engagement occurs changes over time. Use of tech very helpful for many students, if it is done purposefully 2/2
By working back from the students' hopes, dreams, ambitions to the kings and queens ( I mean teachers!)
Educational science and theory is continually developing. If you want the best reconect with your uni. They welcome you
A5 A child wont learn unless they feel you care. A positive classroom is the result of positive relationships
A5 by being co-learners and understanding that connections are key. Connections between learners, curriculum connections etc
A5 Know your Ss and how they learn. Plan routines that allows Ss to control content and you control curriculum links. Feed forward
*Mrs Lol I must not have recognised him with his clothes on 😉
A5 - Build rapport early with Ss, understand each S to build the best opportunity for engagement
A5: By listening before speaking. Know your students and then be willing to learn alongside them!
A5 Knowing your students, being engaged with what turns on their learning linking it to the curriculum & having fun along the way.
A5: Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side? Foster Curiosity!
https://t.co/1GUvpEBCEZ
yes...model for students, also engaging and empowering for Tchrs. We can see impact... about growing not imposing
But isn't this taking time away from our core business of teaching?
True MRS, I just watched Bruno OMG, forget GOT for depravey!
A5; by building the foundation for an open community instead of a closed hieraki
actually... things begin with carefully thought out questions...
A5 a clean, vibrant and organised home classroom has helped me feel comfortable which is passed to Ss
A4.1: The vision of the future is educators spending 80% of their time in learning - action research - along side their Ss
Awesome post! I GOT this one!
A5: By connecting with Ss as more than just Ss. As people before Ss. Probably the most difficult and easy thing to do!
This is vital. We are data miners. But why? We don't use it to our advantage often enough
yes a bigger problem, starting local, shifting from 'My Ss to Our Ss' is a start...
A5: We need to understand our Ss aspirations. They need to feel listened to always!
A5) Providing Ss w/ global learning opportunities, & , listening & learning from each other
But you only gain traction by including the grassroots at the early stages https://t.co/5kSrPAXitk
actually... things begin with carefully thought out questions...
A5 "Kids don't care how much you know until they know you care"
incorporate it into what you are doing this is how I completed my PhD while working
I hope you have taken full advantage
You can quote GoT in your thesis!
OMG yes - you just need to chat with Ss who have 'seen the light' with a teacher who cares!!
A5 by seeing 25 different faces and minds in front of you.
A5: I'm a huge advocate of positive relationships and mutual respect promoting + classroom behaviour - you get out what you put it
Building t -Ss relations are key
Anna NO! Don't tell they got to you, you can fight their magic, their evil pursuits! LOL
A5 Encouraging a culture of rights & responsibilities for all within the learning environment.
LOL!!!! My supervisor would have a heart attack!!!
A5. In a modern classroom Ss are empowered, self directed/monitored, they invest in their own learning. https://t.co/dqMuinEpVU
Aint that the truth. It is awful seeing a S struggle in a class with a T that doesn’t care.
That dude looks like our groundsman! Straight up.
That dude looks like our groundsman! Straight up.
A5: Respect is important. Respect your Ss. Understand the 'critical voices'. Chances are they are not alone. They ask to know!
A5 A little sip of Milk of the Poppy should do the trick
A5: By allowing classes to develop@their own pace and by realising there are many ways to get to the same goal
heartbreaking... it's when you sometimes wish you could just teach them all... just not possible :(
is now trending in USA, ranking 27
Add high expectations and you have almost the perfect classroom
. Whos putting the ?s up? Havent seen Q5
Yes! sometimes you need to create a new model that makes the existing one obsolete (Fuller) https://t.co/bgshT4MvOM
Q6 "You know nothing Jon Snow" Authentic Student Voice can be transformational, how can we maximise it? https://t.co/EseFCRX1vc
Minus the sword...I think. Nah, actually!
A5) You set the environment. If you are positive, the students will follow (at threat of pain)
by leaving them to ask the Qs! You work it out!
True, how do you design a quality question? When you have never researched
A5 learn your Ss, engage them using relevant, contemporary & novelty links to content and skills
I'm just worried that we are putting emphasis on something that may or may not benefit our Ss
So long since I've been here I've forgotten how to do it 😭 https://t.co/mX2BTZmxBZ
Hi all, a bit late to join you-been watching Tim Minchin
I thought you were referring to engaging Ts, not the actual research question. I got you now! https://t.co/vsHFgDBoC0
research is meaningless unless effort is applied to refine the question being explored - which is not a task to dismiss
building relationships, having a sense of humour, keeping perspective on what's most important
you may be surprised at how many uni based researchers are really keen to connect with Ts
I find Hatti’s research spot on. But the interpretation is frequently lacking (and sometimes directly misleading).
A6: It's surprising what they'll come up with if you just ask them. I use google forms a lot to get feedback on what students want
A6; as being said so many times before, start to regonize and listen to their voices
If I was this guy, forget behaviour probs. no homework, no head!
i know the very basics - but not enough to feel confident to know what and how to start and where to go
A6 - By providing any Ss who want to share their ideas the opportunity to do so
A6 by giving Ss voice in curriculum and their learning.
A6: Listen with respect - oh and give opportunity for them to be heard.
This is the challenge of leaders to develop the professional capital of the teaching staff https://t.co/wXEZIgYlh6
True, how do you design a quality question? When you have never researched
Would love to help Jon Snow know more things...just saying 😊
hopefully the choices we make are ones which will benefit Ss (or Ts) directly or indirectly
a5. Rships, quality consistent researched based pedagogy, supportive exec, intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, shared vision
A6: Give them a chance, an opportunity, right from the get go. Work as a team, not as individuals. https://t.co/TwJ6UtiENg
A6. Through authentic and regular conversations. Once a term isn't enough to allow Ss have a voice within their learning enviro.
Great call, Angela! Loving this type of thinking from our newest teachers! https://t.co/iu1uDwsBIB
A5: I'm a huge advocate of positive relationships and mutual respect promoting + classroom behaviour - you get out what you put it
A6. Authentic voice and choice motivates Ss to want to learn, our job is to massage curriculum to work with this willingness
role model & chip away - they will begin to peek over the top & some will help dismantle
.Relationships impt. Get to know Ss & tch to the indiv. Find out interests & maximise their lrng yr tchng thru those
It's amazing what happens when we listen for a while. Our actions have so much more purpose
take the time to see them as individuals, listen, be responsive A6
A6 authentic voice is only possible with authentic answers to authentic problems
I think that being out of the classroom means that I sometimes miss the latest buzz works going on
A5 Maximise lesson authenticity to minimise behavioural issues.
And Chapter 7 - make that a good one. :P
A6 “There’s no shame in fear, my father told me, what matters is how we face it.”
A6 be open to hearing it & be willing to provide students with problems where you don't know the solution
A6: Students are exc source of feedback - have used info collected to make changes to programs & places https://t.co/kFAF6joWIa
A6: It's surprising what they'll come up with if you just ask them. I use google forms a lot to get feedback on what students want
A6 An authentic voice requires an authentic audience
sometimes the "leader" is a classroom teacher. Some exec don't have the skills either.
Feedback using Google Forms is a great way for students to feel needed
This is my fav tweet of the night so far... Now we just need a similar GoT reference lol https://t.co/bmkR2qz41I
A5 "Kids don't care how much you know until they know you care"
It's been so great getting insight from experienced Ts every week through !!
A6: create an environment of trust where they know their voice is valued without ridicule.
The teacher who makes the genuine connections wins
A6 Allowing Ss to have ownership of their learning, engaging them with purposeful authentic inquiry learning
Build the world's greatest ever army and conquer through violent evidence and great action all those who disbelieve. A6
Build the world's greatest ever army and conquer through violent evidence and great action all those who disbelieve. A6
A6 by utilising tools that provide a variety of options for student choice and voice
A5 Ss lead the setting of expectations & consequences.Value S input & feedback & be supportive of their needs in & out of the room
Q5 Thinking Routines are a great way to ensure student voice in a class of 25+ chn
gosh, i'm thinking with these GoT quotes - maybe too deep of a show for me to watch LOL
Agreed... Leaders don't need titles, they use actions
A6) Ss know so much, always amazed, provide opportunities like Genius Hour to showcase passions & inform others
More PBL https://t.co/rrRrZc1fuy
A6 by utilising tools that provide a variety of options for student choice and voice
I don't know what to say. I do not know where the problem lies. Not enough time or knowledge / courage?
one might say they are the only source of feedback.
reflective practice leads to numerous lines of teacher inquiry, a natural process right?
also need to make sure that there is the potential for action - all very well mohave voice heard but not acted on
A6. I have run the 'I wish my teacher knew' over the last two years. It is very eye-opening to see what students think/feel.
going to stick with my LOL
A6: Stop long enough to listen. Hear what they say. Then respond! Or get out of the way. Either works...
I am just a peasant. I have as much to learn from the students as they do from me
A6: It’s about relationships. Get those right and everything else flows neatly!
A5 positive pysch/growth mindset focusing on relational pedagogy & selfconceptual devt combined with intellectual challenge
lol, Authentic Audience was the title of my first ever conference presentation
A6 by involving them in work that uses their own questions to drive the learning
authentic is the key word here
mineare Survivor and Amazing Race LOL
my phone crashed no emoji for me.. soooo not in sync with GoT *insert awks face here* :P
But I dont always need to see, do or read research that tells me what I am doing is "best practice" and who decides this
A6: I'm continually telling my students that my classroom is "experimental". When I ask for feedback from them, I act on it.
A6. P2. I use this info to improve the classroom space and my teaching.
Q6 electronic means can be so useful. Ensure that at least some questions are open, not all closed and you can discover a lot
Courage is a single step. Start reading up about action research. It will begin to flow from there
two easy shows to make into Science contexts :p
You are a not servant MAN, you are a Prince of learning and engaging the future kings and queens!
And what is the benefit of Action REsearch?
A6: Use student voice to guide teacher learning. They quite often tell us what we need to know. Sometimes know what they need too!
I agree and believe our schools are better equipped with tools to do this
student voice by inviting students to help planning for curric delivery
Final question coming up......
You sound like you have watch an episode or two https://t.co/iV8m1uVqhU
You are a not servant MAN, you are a Prince of learning and engaging the future kings and queens!
A6 student voice needs an authentic audience and purpose. Ss need connections outside the classroom and goals to work towards
being in beta mode is important
Great point. Through routines, comes freedom!
also need to make sure that there is the potential for action - all very well to have voice heard but not acted on
Thanks Stuart I'm not a servant. I am a life long learner who wants the best for my students
...more PBL https://t.co/wi1kRTZKey
A6 student voice needs an authentic audience and purpose. Ss need connections outside the classroom and goals to work towards
need a good control or comparative data to determine success and failure
A6 Ask for feedback and follow up. Show that you are listening to the voice
Oh, nor am I. Bring on Suits! or Mad Men, or The Good Wife.
I believe our best leaders are in classrooms day in/day out - teacher leaders
I am sorry people. My bedtime is around 10pm. This end of daylight time is killing me. Thanks again for the chat c u nxt week
Let's get Mulder on GOT somehow somewhere!
creativity is more near to the Ss voice. Give opportunity to listen is the best way to do more and listen them
Q7 "Winter is Coming"What challenges do we Ts face today and what will we need to be ready for tomorrow? https://t.co/Y9MMJ6Zzm6
Hit Like and Share , , , , ,
I wish I liked it… (skulks away).
You are a knight in learning armour!
What I think works in my C/R might not work in other classrooms. Very little generalisability, not reliable or valid
A6: Student choice equals Ss engagement, even when they don't get their first choice. Glad to be asked in the first place
OMG we like the same shows - hahaha what a surprise! NOT! house of cards?
A6. Lead as you wish others to follow. 1 T valuing S ideas & input will encourage others to make the change too
if really useful feedback is wanted, must be brave & ask difficult questions - which may have not so palatable answers
I haven’t watched it…YET. I am a binge watcher though.
So I should stop asking "which is the best class and why is it mine?"
if we did this better, we'd definitely teach better. Sadly AR as PD is undervalued by system
A7: Not implementing 21st C learning into our practice - we should already have been doing this for the past 16 years!
But that's the way I taught, sometimes it put me at odds with others but I wasn't going to teach any other way
No that question is perfect
Changing learning environments and "contemporary" style of teaching - moving away from I speak, you listen https://t.co/Y8rUpbRcWl
Q7 "Winter is Coming"What challenges do we Ts face today and what will we need to be ready for tomorrow? https://t.co/Y9MMJ6Zzm6

Q7 "Winter is Coming"What challenges do we Ts face today and what will we need to be ready for tomorrow? https://t.co/Y9MMJ6Zzm6
I was dubious at first but the impact for the profession is immeasurable. Let's record & share what we know.
A7 “Everyone wants something, Alayne. And when you know what a man wants you know who he is, and how to move him.”
A7: not being afraid to change .. Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?' 'That is the only time a man can be brave'
A7 on going PD and PLN action
A6. In DoE schools we have 3 strategic directions. 3 areas where schools can plan for student voice (leading, teaching & learning)
