And staff personalities
Great call. We do need a diversity of environments!
A1: Students that have autonomy in their own learning that involves collaboration and acceptance of failure as part of learning.
A1 The prfect learnin climate is where the Studend feels free to express an idea/openion in a lovin env.No such thing as failure

A1: In a perfect world - each Ss receives what they need. S/E well being.
Absolutely. When kids are listened to, they really have a stake in the learning and classroom climate
Ss success is more than academics-need to create learning environment for whole student
Morning meetings have made a huge difference in my classroom. https://t.co/M9bzkouQ2p

Q2 Looking around your room/school for the first time, what assumptions will students make?
Yes, exactly. The culture is recognized instantly
A2 That we are ready for them to learn
Hello James from Florida a little late to the party!
when I make a "mistake" I make sure my kiddos know even adults have failures but it's okay!
A2: I don't know if it's so much the look as it is the feel.
A2 All students are valued, all students are leaders
A2 def working on this at Right now we are a hodgepodge. I want Ss to feel empowered&celebrated but we are lacking cohesion w/design
Just in time, we're on Q2 Looking around your room/school for the first time, what assumptions will students make?
sometimes small spaces can feel big & free other times big spaces feel confined-depends on culture we build https://t.co/F4EOnUzBMn
A2: Fun, loving learning environments; physical space a little small, but nothing but creativity with items cannot handle.
hello everyone, Iqra from Brooklyn NY
It all depends on the culture we build and what we do with those spaces

We need to recognize that being less helpful is OK-as long as we've built culture to support https://t.co/ExMqRWWIWE
A2: they see fun, focus, love to name a few things!
A2 - here i feel like I could do a better job at tailoring the classroom to my students. Let them determine set up and look.
What might be some ways that students serve as leaders? https://t.co/W8mIQMoOpx
A2 All students are valued, all students are leaders
A2: Next to Ss feeling safe, an environment that shows learning happens here is incredibly important.
Sure, when kids can rely on each other, that's a home run
A2: Be it that my room is for intervention, I get a lot of "what's this?" or "Oooo, are we gonna do that?" It's engaging
A2: students should see the daily purpose somewhere in the room. Will I learn something worthwhile EVERYDAY?
That books are important. We give away books each day and have reading areas scattered around the building.
Yes, for a student to feel safe, I think is one of the most important things.
How can you make a student feel welcomed/invited with room arrangement? https://t.co/wVJFN4DsKC

A2 fun, collaborative (with the way the desks are), hands-on learning, not like other classes.
A2: Every Ss looks different thing when they come inside a room. I think they will look at what is most interesting to them.
Just said today... students don't have to be successful the first time.
often they learn best from peers-they can same thing as us & it sticks https://t.co/7vhZslkiVW
Sure, when kids can rely on each other, that's a home run
Love it when that happens! https://t.co/m9BnB4t6CW
A2: Be it that my room is for intervention, I get a lot of "what's this?" or "Oooo, are we gonna do that?" It's engaging
Looks different than when I was in school, perhaps matching our current customers!
Love this idea https://t.co/gMmgLFUgX5
That books are important. We give away books each day and have reading areas scattered around the building.
if Ss are successful first time are we really teaching them? We need to provide challenges https://t.co/1LAT2UIDiQ
Just said today... students don't have to be successful the first time.
What are some things that draw their attention that regular classroom teachers could steal?
Kids need to see themselves reflected in the room. It helps them see it as their room
Q3 How much creative control of the room/school decor belongs to your students?
By creating a space that the students want to be and that they can see themselves in
Thinking win-win, putting first things first, begin proactive...Leader in Me 7 habits https://t.co/CiDhjmJY7c

A2 All students are valued, all students are leaders
Just added you to the Voxer group today, Jeremy. Welcome.
A3: If they decor the room with you, they will appreciate it more. Learn to respect the environment they created.
A3 I set up the room before school starts but kids r always tweaking & changing things to fit their needs. Kids ideas ALWAYS welcome
A3: As time passes by, more and more creative control goes to my students (via work samples, etc.)
A3. Great question - as much as possible just so it doesn't become a cluttered learning space.
A3: how much of the school is the student's?
A2: Was in a great classroom today that used rain gutters as book holders!
A3 standards are the end destination-how we get there is up to Ts & Ss-include voice & choice https://t.co/vcJcfACBLZ
Q3 How much creative control of the room/school decor belongs to your students?
Q3: For me, I had a large wall dedicated to Student work. I also utilized anchor charts around the room.
That's an excellent point. Kids need ownership of the classroom
Comfy reading corners! Love it
when Ss understand success criteria w/ anchor charts they have a road map to success https://t.co/q1SPlujK6Z
Q3: For me, I had a large wall dedicated to Student work. I also utilized anchor charts around the room.
Right. Clothes left behind on the floor does not count as decor, lol
A3: I think that the students should have some say because it is their classroom space, not just the teachers.
at the beginning of the school year we set agreements as to how we are going to learn, discuss & create together.
It looks more like than a classroom!
How often do you change the student work? Who determines what gets displayed? https://t.co/mtUyYYcUDO
Q3: For me, I had a large wall dedicated to Student work. I also utilized anchor charts around the room.
Saw Coach B in a conference about a year ago - amazing
A3: The students really are the one who decor the room through their works and ideas
A2 have many Student Thinking Maps up mirroring the latest curriculum
A3: Providing students w/creative control of room/school decor promotes ownership of the learning environment & evokes pride.
A3: Easy bulletin board. Sheet protectors, let students show off their work - change when they want. https://t.co/TitobFEpIx
its important that not just "A" work gets displayed-we need to create growth displays or Ss selected work https://t.co/D5fXHHYxlW
How often do you change the student work? Who determines what gets displayed? https://t.co/mtUyYYcUDO
Q3: For me, I had a large wall dedicated to Student work. I also utilized anchor charts around the room.
LOVE this idea! It gives them the chance to show the work that they are most proud of.
you can change the work per unit.Students should be the ones who determine what gets displayed, they opinion matters
Establishing routines and procedures early saves precious instructional time all year. https://t.co/4NHq7ggQTk
at the beginning of the school year we set agreements as to how we are going to learn, discuss & create together.
Like the sheet protector idea - easy to change out
A3: not enough but it does inspire me allow them to choose their work to display.
Have you run into displaying only for other students?
should only exemplary student work be displayed? I wonder how the
PLN tonight feels?
I attempted to change out Ss work every 2 weeks. I had a spot for every child on the wall. https://t.co/skuy2aoih9
How often do you change the student work? Who determines what gets displayed? https://t.co/mtUyYYcUDO
Q3: For me, I had a large wall dedicated to Student work. I also utilized anchor charts around the room.

Soft storage cubes to sit on, pillows, Book buddies, pointers, fly swatters, ZAP & ZONK games in buckets... https://t.co/SETt6lRkx0
What are some things that draw their attention that regular classroom teachers could steal?
No. Kids should choose work that they want to display. Their reason may differ from ours
A3: Quite a bit. Students can change the lighting, music and move chairs/tables anywhere they want (and hallway) without permission.
A3 It's that control issue with me, need Ss to have more input. They do with anchor charts and student work wall.
We have variety of Ss displays in our halls-let Ss pick their best work not just having T pick
Was recently visiting w/ a district that decided on any work displayed
Great way for & asking why they want that work displayed
For our spring student led conferences, we had kids create websites as their portfolios of work. They did a nice job
A3: Student created anchor charts are more engaging/validating to students than teacher/commercially created educational resources.
Q4 How would a student describe the values and tone of your class/school?
Great idea & really helping to make students https://t.co/lv68kO3jkA
For our spring student led conferences, we had kids create websites as their portfolios of work. They did a nice job
Greg- 2nd grade, MD. Been a while, but glad to be able to join in the conversation tonight, albeit a bit late. Hope all are well.
A4: Positive and open environment that starts from where they enter the building and until they exit to go home
A4 I want them to see that we value all kids and realize that everyone has something to contribute to the classroom culture
A4: One where students trust each other, look out for each other and an environment that is rich with student autonomy and learning.
No disagreement among students? https://t.co/pVbfLjgkoH
A3: Quite a bit. Students can change the lighting, music and move chairs/tables anywhere they want (and hallway) without permission.
Students meet each morning/assistant principal leads out the students stating, "We, at Frances Willard are leaders and learners."
A4: With a few of my schools they decide on & often in
A4 think Ss would say Ts/staff value growth & positive-we celebrate Ss who grow every quarter https://t.co/vjLUnfHdeS
Q4 How would a student describe the values and tone of your class/school?
I've had none yet. Students go to different parts of my class, hallway or even other spaces. No problems yet.
A4: Values/tone of the school focuses on belief that ALL students can achieve. This is our vision, it drives all we do as adults.
A4: we recite honor code after Pledge every day and we are a PBIS school
I work w/ K-5 literacy. My 5th graders want to work with my K-1st materials https://t.co/daGUGtj2tJ
I teach grade 2 but people think it's a kindergarten classroom.
Important to celebrate! Makes learning fun, relevant. S works hard, makes growth, gets recognition.
A4: Currently dont hve my own class yet, but I want it to be a safe space, positive, engaging space for all of my Ss
We have a Bystander program at our school. We stand to have each other's back.

Not sure I agree with their approach, but I understand what they are trying to do. https://t.co/vl6ame3uT0
It's about student anonymity. Puzzling to me for certain
…and I’ve been so excited by the growth I’ve seen. They have embraced and enhanced.
Just in time, Anna. We still have 1/2 of left.
it's going to take until 22nd century to create schools with 21st century teaching and learning if we continue to take baby steps
Yep, need a revolution, not an evolution!
A4: I definitely would say my students would say active! ;)
Helps to create a collaborative environment!
A4 ALL Ss have input, ALL Ss are valued. A 3rd grd S (who was visiting) told me that "your classroom is fun and your kids learn
Absolutely! The level of high-level collaboration has increased significantly.
Q5 What is the role of relationships in learning? How do you go about building relationships with students?
My first graders would say the same. They'd also probably say loud. Learning is LOUD.
That's the best thing you c an hear!
A5: Developing a class where students collaborate with each other. They do this everyday and talk to each other way more than I do.
Needed to follow each other before I can send a DM and request :-)
Yes, thank you for saying that! Learning IS loud!
A5 Relationships are the foundation of any good education. I start from day 1 learning about the kids and building
Kids recognize “real”. Be authentic!

How do you learn about your students? https://t.co/DhQUPq0IGd
A5 Relationships are the foundation of any good education. I start from day 1 learning about the kids and building
A4 Relationships make a huge impact on student learning, just showing students you care & believe in them opens them up & motivates
A5: How to break the cycle of generational poverty? Build relationships w/students. Teach them to dream past circumstances.
A5: You have to have a good relationship in order for your Ss to really want to learn from you and trust you.
A5: Relationships are the foundation of everything we do as educators. We must work to strengthen them daily.
We have to pay attention to them, listen to them, engage them in conversations about their hobbies and interests
A5- Getting to know the child and their interests. Showing you genuinely care for them will help build trust
A5 Listening is a BIG part of this! Ts listening to Ss. https://t.co/7qWkCiVBTb
Q5 What is the role of relationships in learning? How do you go about building relationships with students?
In case there's any confusion... Tiffany can set it straight. Sounds like learning comes first! https://t.co/KNIGsKOnvc
A4: Mrs. Boley means what she says; don't tell me what you can't do;if you don't want to be here, think about why you're here
A mic drop situation! Be intentional about that relationship building! Set the tone, and look out! https://t.co/ZBEjH9kW9m
A5: Shake hands when Ss enter the room, class meetings, Good News, be their advocate, believe in the Ss, be consistent, show you care
A5: paying attention to them, getting to know them on an individual level.

Yep, don't tell me what you can't do. Tell me what you CAN do!
A5 One of my goals this year was to consistently have one on one reading and writing conferences. This has been a game changer.
Be genuine in listening to them, build trust
A5 relationship is key. I start the year calling my Ss before they even meet me. During the S yr I send notes, go to games, etc.
A5: Hattie says relationships have greater impact than director instruction, socio-econ, & home environment https://t.co/qr8kDru4Ga
The old chestnut: Kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care
A5 talk to them! High fives- cafe talks;) student monthly celebrations!
So true. https://t.co/rmqyaYFQ0V
The old chestnut: Kids don't care how much you know until they know how much you care
A5: I worked under a teacher last fall who did a FABULOUS job of building relationships with each of her students.
A5: Give students a voice in what they do. Let them work with each other and teach! Give them the stage. https://t.co/3IRrrPcIIK
A5: Hattie says relationships have greater impact than direct instruction, socio-econ, & home environment https://t.co/07KmYsXePY

We have a great kindergarten teacher who spends five, interrupted minutes talking w/ a student each day for a week. Next wk. new S.
A5: Greet students at the door every morning, smile and say their name.
Love having hard numbers (and Hattie!), hard to refute a huge research study. https://t.co/qvtl3anZz9
A5: Hattie says relationships have greater impact than director instruction, socio-econ, & home environment https://t.co/qr8kDru4Ga
That is such a great idea!!!
So powerful. Certainly sets the stage for a day of learning from a teacher who cares. https://t.co/XdryfEdT3v
A5: Greet students at the door every morning, smile and say their name.
A5: Students won't learn from people they don't like and respect.

TRUTH! Ask my sophomore son. https://t.co/6WIveEVkEE
A5: Students won't learn from people they don't like and respect.
“Good morning” given, “good morning” expected. Hi-5s, fist pounds, hugs- show that you care.
Q6 "I dare you to try to teach me!" How do you get buy-in from this kiddo?
A6: I am interested in the answers to this one....
Was just reading about how impactful a simple high five can be. https://t.co/P8ORFYk2dO
“Good morning” given, “good morning” expected. Hi-5s, fist pounds, hugs- show that you care.
A6: Don't know if I ever had such a student, perhaps it was just my !
A6: Know the content and then connect it to their daily lives, either through current events or schema
A6 That is a kiddo who has not had support from or good relationships with teachers in the past. Must work harder to build it
Something so simple, and yet so profoundly impactful!
What steps can you take to help build that?
A6 def find what makes them tick! Find a job you need their help with - help find a pos purpose at school. Check in w/ them daily
RELEVANCE. https://t.co/cwiQibGMRI
A6: Know the content and then connect it to their daily lives, either through current events or schema
A5: letting them know that you are glad they are here, smiles, hugs, high 5s, conversing with them- kids know if it's genuine
They need a long leash and to know that no matter what, you are on their side and want the best for them.
A6. Have watched Ss "turn on" to learning by being given an old computer to take apart, or have their own "office" area
A6: If a student states s/he does not want to be taught, ask them to teach you! Validate before you educate.
Shannon here from Thinking maps. Better late than never!
Now, there is a good idea!
Who wants to see as a guest moderator for ? Would love to hear him lead chat about Standards Based Learning. Rick?
A6: I have those kids sit at my conferring table and just listen in while I help others. They want to feel special but not less than
. Rita in Eugene saying hi to you all. Relevance is critical to engaging Ss, finding meaning in Learning.
Late in & Early Out - So sorry but Thank You for a great chat! see you next week!
Since I can only retreat once...Retweet retweet retwewt retweet retweet retweet retweet retweet
As , I’ve asked my Ss, how would a “leader” respond? How can I help you be successful?
You're right to point it out, Connie, but gosh, poverty could overwhelm any relationship, if severe enough.
We have many kids in class before school, during lunch and after school. They won't LEAVE! They feel comfortable
. By listening to Ss, we learn how to teach them. Dewey.
Ss say hi as they walk in & out of classroom. Fistbumps on way out assessing their level of understanding for the day's lesson.
Reinforces importance of the 1st 2-4 weeks of school. Builds that foundation, that rapport.
Agree. I heard say on a video "Real Recognizes Real" and it's so true. Be genuine.
A6: Create opportunities for success, so the confidence in learning can be built again.
A6 Find out what interests him/her, build that relationship, smile, show him respect, let him/her set learning goals
'So many commingling factors and levels of teacher capacity with each factor, can't be limited by singular ranking.
It is essential to get off to a good start. It can set the tone for the entire year
A6 Gut instinct goes a long way in edu-if students have a "dare you to try to teach me" vibe my instinct is to disarm it w/ empathy
A6: I think by listening to the student and figuring out their strengths and weaknesses and likes and dislikes, is part of it
A6: pay attention to their likes, successes, and play up those!
You've graciously been after me for some time to do it, I'm going to have accept. Send me possible dates again.
Q7 How do your students know that their learning styles will be honored?
A6: Start the ss where they are and take it from there. Make learning an invitation, not a mandate. S might take you up on it.
. Research by Kounin talks about a T's withitness & that's what is being said here tonight. Ts instinctively know.
A7) Students know that their learning styles will be honored when you set the understanding of flexible assessment
A7 When kids understand that they will help design their own learning in our class, they feel validated and more confident
This is what persistence will get you folks.... coming to . Shall we do SBL or Feedback? https://t.co/ifCrjfXZzf

A6:A kiddo who's been pre-judged and misunderstood. He didn't have anyone to honestly push him;Been told repeatedly what he can't do
A7: Give choices in process and product.
A7) Ts must establish a classroom that validates a demonstration of learning through a variety of means.
. Anecdotal observation is formative, at its best!
That's voice. https://t.co/Yfy8jZd8yO
A7 When kids understand that they will help design their own learning in our class, they feel validated and more confident
That's a terrible place to be in
A7: By the teacher planning ahead, have different activities for students to partake in that appeal to their learning style
I'm okay with either. Anyone have a preference?
A7: Back up your conversation with action. Your students love technology - find a way to incorporate as much as possible.
. True. All Ss want to feel they are being heard. Voice matters. Think Freedom Writers.
Important point! Not always just one way to come up with the correct answer. Collab & exchange ideas.
A6: You should be upfront & honest with what you expect from them. Show them you truly care and it's a reason they are your student
A7: UDL w/multiple means of representation, student choice, honors variability of ALL learners.
A7: Learning style survey tells Ss the T is interested and gives them info about how they learn. Sample: https://t.co/a2vMUepxbi

What should topic be when is guest moderator?
. Absolutely! Teach everything at last three times, three ways, as a goal. Works!
I'll let you get back to your chat tonight. Gotta go walk the puppies before there are indoor accidents. :-)
This is so very important. I wish this would have been done for me more as a child
It is, but I've seen this type of student before.
How about what he has learned since he wrote his last bk that he wishes he could have included?
I make it clear early on in class that all learning styles are respected & we collaborate in learning! https://t.co/aKlbehGp2D
. Dun and Dunn, Carbo & Armstrong just as relevant today. All kids learn best, differently!
Yep, and when they get a little confidence and know you'll help them, they'll do great things
Take the risk! I just created a Twitter & Instagram page for my 7th grade math classes. Can't wait to see how it goes!
