I believe transparent, candid, and consistent communication is critical to positive culture. https://t.co/oVflJ7rer6
A1 A pos school culture is created by mutual respect, support and a genuine desire to build positive collaborative relationships
There will not be a successful what until we see the why!
A1: Lay a foundation of trust, build the walls of relationships and put a roof on if FUN ... then the positive will come
I have to remind myself of this daily! So easy to turn negative, but being + can have SUCH an impact! https://t.co/6FrLIzQAWF
a1. A positive school culture is built by being intentional and not accepting negativity. It must start with the adults
A1: Shared vision builds unity and establishes positive school culture.
RT Q2 Why is a positive school culture needed?
Sorry I cant join tonight. But and I are hosting a free, catered COLcentric grading summit. https://t.co/JnReyG1ZnT
. As well as being modeled by administration and involvement of every other staff member
The rookie drops a great one! https://t.co/o2AzttEq8B
A1 A pos school culture is created by mutual respect, support and a genuine desire to build positive collaborative relationships
We must not only have a unified mission but be implementing it into our teaching and learning by ALL in the community
A2: Because a negative one isn't working...
A2 So that every person who walks through our doors believes they are about to have an amazing experience. https://t.co/mhhYfaboaW
Got more to go with that...
A2: It sets the tone for the school environment, negative mindset=negative school culture.
A2: Schools are to give HOPE and make everyone feel they can succeed (because they CAN!)
A2: W/out one, there would be no clear or unified focus w/in the bldg (learning or behavior related)
A2: We need a positive school culture so that Ss, Ts and Ps all feel welcome and ABLE TO LEARN
A2: Positive school culture is essential to the target of growth - how can we learn and grow with negativity bombarding us?
A2: Change is inevitable in education. We must see change as great opportunities and stay positive.
A2 Positive people create excited learners!
A1: Shared visioned, goals, and constant innovation and creativity
A2 Positive culture promotes risk!
A2. To inspire others to reach their potential - students and adults.
Yeah the mindset is very important to any growth
A1: It's build by letting all stake holders know we're in this together Ts go to homes to meet Ss, Encourage Ps to come in anytime.
A2 Positive school culture enables effective/descriptive feedback which increases S learning; reduces negative behaviors
A2 Positive culture allows for a growth mindset!
a2. A positive school culture is needed because Life is hard enough & it is totally within our control. We owe it to our kids
Of course but it stands well alone! Definition of insanity is to keep doing the same and expect different...
I definitely agree if teachers aren't happy, kids aren't either.
Sue Hill here, Swartz Creek Spec Ed Tchr
A2 A positive culture fosters personalized learning and teaching
q2 because it's all hands on deck from all of us
A2: There is a direct correlation between motivation and positive culture - not citing, but sayin"
A2: Positive culture makes students WANT to go to school, WANT to learn and WANT to succeed .... negative makes them quit
This is so true! Many times our kids feel that we do not care and we must always show them the passion https://t.co/K0cicGrbUB
I definitely agree if teachers aren't happy, kids aren't either.
positive school culture sets the tone for everyone
A2 It helps reduces the chaotic, non-linear “happenings” that interfere with consistent successful learning throughout the building
Don't forget to have on all of your tweets, so we can follow the fun!
A positive culture fosters a "snowball effect" of positive growth for all. All of a sudden, anything seems doable!
A1 Sounds like TRUST is a key word. Freedom to fail and encouragement to try again in a different way also key.
A2 a positive school culture sets the tone for everything else
SUCH a good point - so much of the year gets sucked up by things that just "come up"
Be the snowball!
https://t.co/4Rz4LrMjrW
A positive culture fosters a "snowball effect" of positive growth for all. All of a sudden, anything seems doable!
Yes! Teaching in an IB school, risktaking is crucial to their learning and development
Q3 What aspects of your school culture are positive and should be reinforced?
A2: W/o a pos. school culture, we're all pulling learning and growth in dif directions. With it, we can all pull 1 way, together.
. Absolutely! That means the office staff, other support staff, cafeteria staff, custodians, & Bildng/Mntnc staff
q2 given, culture eats strategy
A2: Positive school culture creates momentum for learning environment.
A2: So that everyone feels comfortable being their authentic selves, sharing thoughts, and helping each other lrn & grow
A2 How can we expect our students to be creative, innovative and dream big if their in a negative environment?
and if it doesn't reduce, at least it re-frames!
A3 IB program allows for students to learn in authentic experiences
A3. Passion to do what's best for kids
. Stuff that distracts & is non-productive & in some cases is counterproductive
A3: Past success, collaborative structures, relationships all need to be reinforced.
A2 Positive mindset allows new possibilities to emerge while negativity hinders growth and imprisons creativity
This! https://t.co/PHGPL6TykM
A2: W/o a pos. school culture, we're all pulling learning and growth in dif directions. With it, we can all pull 1 way, together.
A2: None of us are in education for the salary. It's hard work we choose to do for the greater good. Positive climate required.
A2 A positive culture helps Admin, Ts, Ss & staff feel empowered & energized.
A3: Relationships b/w Ss and Ts - Ts go to all sorts of S events - sports, musicals, academic comps. Great culture of support
A3: Student tech team teaches others to effectively demonstrate learning digitally. Builds relationships/culture amongst students.
A3: All of our 9th graders had chromebooks last year & it went really well--will expand to other grades this yr
A3: Team building experiences and getting together sharing teaching ideas and strategies collaboratively.
A3) Belief in Ss, commitment to continued learning (of Ts & Ss), https://t.co/iVXjlMCJz3
Q3 What aspects of your school culture are positive and should be reinforced?
A2: a positive culture instills care, motivation, and willingness to improve the atmosphere of schools
A2-Positive school culture is what allows the"sweet spot" to occur;learning & teaching while having fun & feeling safe 2 take risks.
Or BECOMES counterproductive b/c of the way it sours the mood
A2: a positive culture influences change
A3: Teaching Teams are positive, work together for what is BEST for ALL students
We need a positive culture because school should be fun for teachers and students!
. The reframing enables safe, direct, transparent, honest, straightforward addressing of issues
Agreed - and the willingness to put ourselves (Ts) second so the Ss are the top priority. Its learning, not teaching.
A3 freedom to teach what we want and how we want supportive admin and parents
Am I missing the questions? Did I miss the memo?
A3: The importance of time spend on team building. W/o t-b, we cannot grow together. We (Ss, Ts, Ps) will all be on diff pages.
q3 Collaborative structure is a big part of making the vision work for all students
Most important tweet of the night! https://t.co/te6BOabGJQ
Agreed - and the willingness to put ourselves (Ts) second so the Ss are the top priority. Its learning, not teaching.
Curious if schools/teams have common agreement of "what's best for kids?" https://t.co/UVRa5ptdD1
A3. Passion to do what's best for kids
q3 +expectations set with admin reinforce that negative input is not allowed for day to day our culture
Yes, aligning arrows! Everyone pulling in the same direction can make the impossible seem possible. https://t.co/y1MWBMKsFX
A2: W/o a pos. school culture, we're all pulling learning and growth in dif directions. With it, we can all pull 1 way, together.
Questions are coming from me.
Please retweet.
https://t.co/xcTh46cY5E
Am I missing the questions? Did I miss the memo?
. Great point! things that sour the mood; this can take time to overcome at times
It's great that you have the time built in! Shows that team building is valued and important
q4 Sometimes I think schools go with the flow from whats handed down from the district.
interesting point. We must be willing to be flexible and willing Ss outcomes and relationships are main concern
A3 support in teacher teams and collaboration from admin; shared beliefs, goals, and teamwork
A3: Focus on STUDENTS and their needs... not curriculum or covering subjects
This is why the district level leaders need to
https://t.co/UP3H1QIvQB
q4 Sometimes I think schools go with the flow from whats handed down from the district.
A3 Our teachers really care about the kids, they go the extra mile for them
VERY important question - a common language and belief-system must be arrived at first
A1: build a positive culture by giving out positivity on the daily no matter the circumstance. Believe things will work out!
A3 I anticipate Ts improving their understanding of & application of DOK to authentically increase rigor in classroom
A3: When teachers collaborate with each other and are leaders.
I wish this was ALWAYS the case we need more participation outside of our 7-3 day
A3 Positive aspects include real feedback from administration that shows they care about cultivating open communication
A3-Freedom to take risks & change the way things have "always been done". Our admin create pos. environments like we do for our Ss.
That is so accurate and don't listen to teachers who work with students!
It would make a world of difference if all teachers had a positive attitude to commit to reach each student
It should be the case, for the sake of our kids
A3: Relationships with students should always be positive. Todd Whitaker reminds us to assume the good in kids.
I just bought a classroom decal today that says "every day is a happy day"
A3- always knows just when we need a break & doesn't ask too much of us! Also, FUN & meaningful professional dev!
RT Q4 What aspects of the culture are negative and harmful and should be changed?
Word! Every day isn't good, but there is good in every day. No truer words!
Love that. is opening for this year! https://t.co/qfBnbhNtxG
A3: Relationships with students should always be positive. Todd Whitaker reminds us to assume the good in kids.
Adults doing what's best for them and saying it's best for the students.
A4: People first. Egos left at door.
We all want the change but some are not really dedicated to making it happen and this is a big problem
A3: mutual trust and willingness/partnership to work toward common goals
A4: A commitment from some (not all) to continue practices b/c "we've always done it this way" - ugh!
Assume the best in everyone! Even if you have proof that they don't mean it, assume the best! https://t.co/QB46lhYLGB
A3: Relationships with students should always be positive. Todd Whitaker reminds us to assume the good in kids.
A4: Change - desire to teach in isolation instead of collaborating.
A4: We all must stop and put ourselves in other people's shoes.
A4. Adults doing what's best for them and saying it's best for the students.
A4 no collaboration, teachers leaving when the kids do, not wanting to improve our own learning
You Dragons and you speakers. Does my sister know this? I'm sure I'll hear about it.
We gotta bring it every year!
Yes! How do some not want to get better?
A3 We have Power of a positive principal. Need grassroots positivist as well.
A4: Negative mindset period! Not willing to change or adapt to new teaching practices.
A4. Failure to focus on hope, optimism, and the power of a positive attititude
A4: Lack of consistency between colleagues which leads to the good guy/bad guy scenario between Ts and Ss.
A4: Authoritative structures that place people above others ... we are all equal in education: ALL learning and leading
A3 Ss should be the focus; the culture supports building confident & lifelong learners.
q4 not addressing teacher burn out and the trickle down of that. collaboration, student achievement. authentic PD
SUCH a frustrating dynamic
Q4 Negative aspects are those that are concerned only about extrinsic rewards
A4 no sense of purpose, blame students for lack of progress, lack of collaboration, negative relationships amongst staff
The lack of concern for the larger/bigger picture
A4 making every second count
A4: Staying isolated and no willingness to change
A4: The blame game .... We need to solve problems not make them largers
A4 Attitudes of the downward spiral of negativity bring a cancer of complaining to the staff which doesn't help anybody
And just when you think it's been fixed, BOOM, you're blindsided by it again. Grrrr...
A4: Tchrs being afraid to do or try things due to lack of knowledge and/or fear of loosing their job
A4: My boy says to shoot the sacred cows. "In the past..." is my least favorite phrase. Living in the past can be neg.
A4: Need room to incubate ideas & take risks.Need more trust & some spunk to pull great ingredients together. Grow confidence & fun
We have to open those doors and build those bridges!
https://t.co/ayc0m2BmE1
A4: Staying isolated and no willingness to change
A4: Focusing on blaming and finding fault instead of collaborating to fix the problem
CHALLENGE: Take the Positive Teacher Pledge this school year. It's for admin & support staff too. https://t.co/UJ2FlpxzNr
I think it happens most when the 'why' isn't addressed - no underlying philosophy guiding practice = uneven practice
It definitely does not. Then, relationships fracture.
q4 What should change would be really getting a staff that have genuine love for the craft of teaching
A4: I'd like to embed the into everyone in the building.
this was the mindset of my colleagues at my former job.
Q5 How are students impacted when the positives are ignited?
We face the same thing...
A5: When school ceases to be a chore, it becomes an authentic learning experience - it's what we're all after
We must allow our staff and students to create a think tank atmosphere.
https://t.co/da8RhjhLLP
A4: Need room to incubate ideas & take risks.Need more trust & some spunk to pull great ingredients together. Grow confidence & fun
A5. They experience the joy, power, and potential of learning and making a contribution.
A5 When students learn in a positive environment:
curiosity is awakened
passions are ignited
choice is abundant
growth occurs
A5: When positives are ignited, the Ss are set ablaze as well - the positivity becomes contagious.
A5: Students come to school excited and ready for learning, staff is also excited.
A5 inspired by our passion to WANT to learn, develop their own skills for learning
When students can see the positives they begin to believe in themselves
authenticity
https://t.co/dmgHTC7OJd
A5: When school ceases to be a chore, it becomes an authentic learning experience - it's what we're all after
q5 Students are happy when they know that you care for them. They are willing to try when they know you're concerned
Positivity spreads faster than a cold. If you are positive it's hard for kids to be negative. They believe that they can do it
awesome idea! ! https://t.co/RZ4GivYTIn
We must allow our staff and students to create a think tank atmosphere.
https://t.co/da8RhjhLLP
A4: Need room to incubate ideas & take risks.Need more trust & some spunk to pull great ingredients together. Grow confidence & fun
Positive energy increases passion; passion increases student engagement; engagement increases learning. https://t.co/KInWaHK4DS
Q5 How are students impacted when the positives are ignited?
A5: Positivity spreads like wildfire. It makes the negative nellies uncomfortable. A little positive peer pressure to see the good.
A5: Positive learning environment teaches students to dream big. Belief in oneself created by optimism creates sustainability.
A5 students are no longer individuals, but a community of learners ready to take on tasks that lie ahead
A4 Compounded negativity. Waiting for others to solve probs instead of looking for creative solutions.
A5: It awakens students’ interest and curiosity- It also empowers them
Being positive builds your community! https://t.co/mrasbnZsCk
A5 students are no longer individuals, but a community of learners ready to take on tasks that lie ahead
A5 Ts foster learning by capitalizing on Ss passions, S begin to value learning and seek opportunities to learn more
q5 You get the shiny eyes when they're surrounded by positivity
A4 Campus politics; fear; poor communication; are negative factors that can prevent a positive culture
A5: "Be someone others want to be around" puts it rather simply. If everyone has that as a goal then it's a good start.
This is so important because they understand how much potential they have!
A5: They develop a PASSION for learning and find their craft and skills.
A5 No one learns in a negative culture.
A5: Students ACHIEVE when positives are ignited: The show up, become passionate and move forward in their learning
https://t.co/rqZtCCPqqg
A5: Positive learning environment teaches students to dream big. Belief in oneself created by optimism creates sustainability.
A5 Kids benefit, adults benefit. Positive vibes iterate.
A5 More Ss take responsibility for their lrning; strive for higher quality “output”; are not discouraged, yet learn from failure
q5 positivity is palpable and contagious. it allows growth from failure, mistakes and encourages all to keep on
I think students feel the freedom to fail when the positives are ignited because they are encouraged to learn and its ok
A positive learning environment motivates all to want to be better...do better
q5 Positive attitude and Patience goes hand in hand.
a negative environment often times leads students to believe failure isn't an option
Yes! That freedom is so important to the natural cycle of learning!
A5: Optimism grows. Like wildflowers. Colors pop & the weeds slow their grow & become small part of mosiac. Happens when we grow
Love that you mention growing from mistakes - positive culture encourages risks.
q5 also students see that a focus on their positive celebrates their authentic self
Q6 How does your school share the positives with students, parents, & the community?
A5: Students become the little engine that could ....
RT Q6 How does your school share the positives with students, parents, & the community?
A5 Ss feel safe to take risks & creativity flows in a positive culture of learning!
A6 newsletter with S accomplishments in and outside of academics
Yes! Growing from failure is true learning!!!
A6: Celebrate your school through facebook, twitter, schoolway, blogs, websites...
A6 Our schools do a great job getting those positive pictures and activities out through social media.
Follow
Yes, once that zeal for learning is sparked, they're ready
A6: Some Twitter outreach - I'm bringing the school newspaper online this year, so I'm hoping to spread the joy a little more!
Reminder to vote yes on library millages tomorrow!
A6: Appreciation and recognition ceremonies for parents and students
We are beginning to take advantage of social media & creating our own at - https://t.co/0zJhirL7Cm
RT Q6 How does your school share the positives with students, parents, & the community?
a6 Celebrate through constant recognition by all means of uplifting students
A6 PBIS incentives; ex: ice-cream parties, movie nights, teacher vs. student basketball; blog updates
A6: Public celebrations, social media, individual awards from a written note to free Coffee and front row parking
A6. Growing T leadership and voice opportunities
q6 building relationships. showing interest in all stakeholders thoughts, questions. being present and listening
Celebrate good times...
https://t.co/AyJULFvkfn
a6 Celebrate through constant recognition by all means of uplifting students
A6 We have a new committee to promote our schools with dynamic ideas. This group radiates positives!
remember to add all of these amazing edus to your PLN.
A6: Principal is positive & heps create an accepting and kind culture. He showers praise for Ss with ease. It sets a tone.
q6 Another idea is to celebrate small successes as well
A6: We use our school's FB page to announce the successes of our Ss. We work with news affiliates to spread the word as well.
A6: Our staff put kudos in our Cardinals Kudos box to be read at our staff mtg each month. Local bus. provides gift card for 1 T.
We can't control who our kids are, our parents, our colleagues, what our curriculum is ... BUT, we can control our positive energy!
A6 Right inside the main door of the school should be a showcase of student/teachers successes. Set a tangible, positive tone.
Q6 This is one area my school could improve on. I am getting some great ideas to share with my colleagues, thanks everyone!
A6: Everyday ... Share the great things that happen. Thank the students for learning and doing their job: thank the parents too!
A6: Ts write + notes and send kids to the office. We call home or send a note from the office.
A6.2: I have set a goal to do more pos. parent phone calls and texts to really build culture between home and school.
https://t.co/Z5pHhNbGs9
A6: Ts write + notes and send kids to the office. We call home or send a note from the office.
A6 candy or flower grams from teachers teachers write letters to students for grade-level retreats
A6: Positive notes and phone calls are something that I plan to incorporate this school year
Q7 TAKE ACTION: Name one action you will take this year to ignite the positives.
I agree! I want to call my parents and leave a message or just say hello, thanks for trusting me with your child!
q6 send small notes to parents showing what their kids are doing. thanking them. build community
A6 show continued interest in our students so that success is ongoing
This is a great way to get Ss on board with everything you do during class. The "buy-in" is easier to get.
Thanks to all of my friends. Your ideas have inspired me to start a google doc with a few things I want to try this year.
I have postcards made with my name that I would send home with students that made progress just to encourage them
A6: We have a Blue Ribbon board where ea classroom showcases a student’s work. it's updated monthly & is in the hall 4 parents 2 C
A7 Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate
A6 My 20 year old daughter came home from her day camp job at the YMCA with handwritten thank you note. Made her feel special.
Q7 TAKE ACTION: Name one action you will take this year to ignite the positives.
A7: Bigger celebrations for achievements of all students. Everyone doesn't get a trophy, but we praise achievement in any area.
A7: My goal is to visit all colleagues classrooms during a class and leave a positive message as feedback by the end of the sem.
A5 when positives ignite, s's feel valued, safe, on the same side, and are ready to be engaged
Parents really appreciate the Good it makes them proud because you're not just calling when something is wrong which says a lot.
A7 enforce positivism every day by having S write themselves and their teachers notes and teachers doing same thing for S
A7: Positive emails/calls home, student spotlights in the online version of our newspaper
A6 Create opportunities for Ss to share things they are proud of; celebrate diversity of cultures
Hand written notes are special! I need to do this more often. https://t.co/D2EaBMa6Cb
A6 My 20 year old daughter came home from her day camp job at the YMCA with handwritten thank you note. Made her feel special.

A7: My goal is to visit all colleagues classrooms during a class and leave a positive message as feedback by the end of the sem.
A7: Stay positive despite ANY negativity that I encounter with colleagues

Feeling a wave of positive coming from this group. Inspiring me to be my best self like
So important.
Find an accountability buddy who will keep you from being an energy vampire! https://t.co/ZbPUXQJVQe
A7: Stay positive despite ANY negativity that I encounter with colleagues
q7 listen. promote the positive with kids, parents, community. monday heel kick always!
One of the hardest things to do for any person. Use your support systems to help deflect the negative.
A7 build trust, let students have a voice in decision making to create a positive environment where they feel safe
A6 I think it's important to make an effort to show the students you care when they do well. You're on the same team.
Send Positive Vibes daily, don't feed into the negativity
roll with it, make everyday fun
