We are slightly different than most chats. I will post 5 questions separately with a Q and number of the question. When you respond to the questions you choose, be sure to use the hashtag #425chat and start the response with A and the number of the question you are answering...

Q2: Based on your run fits, how do you teach your DL and/or LB to take on blocks? Ex: Inside 1/2 of man to spill outside half to set edge? What are your coaching points? #425chat
Q3: How do you manage the balance between you coverage with DBs and intergrating them into your run fits? How do you coach those DBs to play with your run fits? #425chat
A1: From 2013-2017 I taught squeeze and spill for my four down linemen and in box lb’s. But this past season we started boxing cause it fit our personnel better #425chat
A1) Teaching run fits based on spill or force players in the box. Corners create a new sideline, safety is the adjuster and most likely runs the alley. We try to keep it simple and use buzz words so kids can remember them. Also, we have run fit periods in Spring ball. #425chat
When spilling I tell my athlete to stay square and the line then drive vertically through the inside shoulder of the puller. Driving the knee and outside arm through contact #425chat
Depends on the play. 9 times outta 10 we try to spill. If you're running laterally, you're not running towards the end zone. Let our DBs fly downhill #425chat
A2: Always play to get a gap and a half and spill with a purpose. Never trade 1 for 1 in the scheme. Reduce all edges and play for immediate tackle position. #425chat
A: Question 3- Our DC did a great job of having two periods going at once. One period was 1/2 the DBs and LBs doing stunts/ inside run. The other half of DBs and LBs ran coverages bs 7-7 crew. We then flipped after 10-15 min. #425chat
A1: With my LB's, I teach them to tackle inside out and drive the runner to the sidelines. There's not a worse feeling then seeing them over-pursue and allow the runner to cutback I side for a big gain. #425chat
A3: get them involved in pods drills for safeties and work mashup tackle drills that focus on footwork and approach to the ball. For corners work perimeter run, stalk and bubble drill #425chat
A3: we would bring the safeties over during inside. We also are a base cov. 4 so those safeties have to be on a hair trigger. Fast and violent no wasted movement #425chat
It depends on their fit. DL usually always spill (sometimes we can have the DEs wall and squeeze). Generally speaking we don't ever attack the full blocker. LBs always need to be in a good hit and shed base while taking on blockers with respect to their "original" gap. #425chat
Q2: Based on your run fits, how do you teach your DL and/or LB to take on blocks? Ex: Inside 1/2 of man to spill outside half to set edge? What are your coaching points? #425chat
A3: We spend periods in individual drilling run fit techniques and we do a 7 on 7 period and a run fit period at the same time. We use 2 groups in each drill. #425chat
A2: I probably could be doing better, but I don't teach 1/2 man, because I don't want them to stay engaged on a block. I teach them to make contact with both hands, drive, and shuck the block away from the direction of the runner. #425chat
We are a spill team. Make teams run east and west. Although I just watched a clinic where in 6 man pressures they box it to force it back inside and that has me intrigued. #425chat
A1) DEs will spill. This year we want to work on spilling but then working vertical to get back in play. Lbs scrape, Dogs play force and S runs the alley #425chat
A3: We phrase "Q to 2" in our off-man technique or zone coverages. The mesh or OL will tell us what we need to know; also helps in diagnosing quick game/RPO. If we're pressing or playing a form of 1, rat, or 0 our fits should be fine/hole player will key the mesh and OL #425chat
A3. our Safeties will often go to Inside Drill with the LB’s to work run fits. Also we like to play them at a depth where they can be a “pat, pat” player to provide quick run support #425chat
A1 Part 2. You need both edge setters and spillers. If you DONT spill you put two defenders in an outside gap. Just as bad as 2 defenders in an inside gap. #425chat
A3: I do a walk throughwith my CB and S make sure they understand their responsibility in alll of coverages. Give landmarks. We do a bunch of taking on the block and forcing it back inside as well breaking down the banana Alley with the safety. #425chat
Q5: How do you manage the RPO game? Typically you have your run rules, but how have you had to alter them? Has this had any impact on your fits? #425chat
We always play 1/2 a man. Never take someone on right down the middle. For Dline we teach to read the v of the neck. Where it goes you go. For LB’s we dip and rip and take on 1/2 a man. If someone is 300lbs coming at you let’s attack 1/2 a man and make it 150lbs. #425chat
A3) 10 personnel and empty are the only formations that keep me from having 2dbs that are run first....my safeties are an extension of the line backing core...most of the time my free hitters #425chat
A4: we do use buzz words for each position. It makes it easy to communicate with our kids. We make a buzz word/technique board for each position. #425chat
Depending on the coverage will dictate how fast they fly downhill, so they need to understand the coverage. We also have a run fit period where they can be the "adjuster" off the OLB/Force player. As always, coach simple and play fast! #425chat
Q3: How do you manage the balance between you coverage with DBs and intergrating them into your run fits? How do you coach those DBs to play with your run fits? #425chat
A2: We always play 1/2 a man. Never take someone on right down the middle. For Dline we teach to read the v of the neck. Where it goes you go. For LB’s we dip and rip and take on 1/2 a man. If someone is 300lbs coming at you let’s attack 1/2 a man and make it 150lbs. #425chat
A2) DL takes inside half of man and then work upfield if logged, PSLB works over the top, BSLB through cutback working to dipunder any cutoff blocks #425chat
A3- Work run/hat reads for our safeties, in Indy and/or pre-practice, we send the safeties to inside run to get a full picture. Corners work on block destruction and playing the run outside in. #425chat
A1: We are a spill team. Make teams run east and west. Although I just watched a clinic where in 6 man pressures they box it to force it back inside and that has me intrigued. #425chat
A3: We divorce our back 5 from the front 6, so their run fits aren't as important. As long as the safeties can get downhill on jet sweep, option pitch, or any outside run. #425chat
A3: I used to do team run fits in our pursuit drills. Use an offense for 3 steps for key read/stimulus response and a ball carrier or roll a donut or one of those huge yoga balls as ball carrier. #425chat
A3. Each week we schedule an inside run period & a pass coverage period at the same time. Then will split the time & have our S & OLBs switch off drills.
#425chat
We use a true cover down on #2 Strong. We also play games backside with Dropping the Free to Rob the post/curl zone. That allows Mike and Will to push late to pass drops. #425chat
A2 - we teach half man for a ton in the box. A Phrase my DC uses for spillers is to “strike thick with eyes inside”. We don’t like giving up a defender just for the heck of it. #425chat
A:5 If I know what RPOs they like to run from film study, treat it just like dive/triple option responsibility. Also try and take as much away with our pre snap alignment as possible.#425chat
A1: We are a spill team up front with our DL...our LBs will either spill or box depending on where their help is in the secondary...secondary will box #425chat
A4) One gap scheme however based on their initial read they need to adapt. I don't want my MLB to plug if they get an outside zone read or fast flow away. I prefer this method because from an Xs and Os perspective it is sound and doesn't stress certain positions. #425chat
A4- 1gap. Allows players to play fast, with gap responsibility, and also allows LBs to correct a DL who may get in wrong gap and "make them right.". Found w 2 gap it slows players down and creates to many headaches because it makes them think on the run. #425chat
A5: not really as a secondary coach. I pretty much tell my guys pass first and don’t committed to the run until the ball carry break the pocket or LOS #425chat
A4: each alignment has a term. And put the individual in any alignment. Their job doesn’t just for them just the alignment. They know the term and do their job in the spot. Can do 3/4/5 dl no problems they do their job #425chat

A3) S is playing flat foot read on #2. So this has the player on our D that has to be a “DUDE”. Has to fit the alley fast as that is where we are attempting to spill it to, CBs are contain if dog is unable to force #425chat
A3: Mix up looks to keep Offenses off-balance: coverages, box looks, Force players. Have 3 Safeties do Group work so they understand leveraging the ball to one another. #425chat
A5: RPO’s really put you into triple option football. In our two high shell we have to decide on Sunday who mdm is. Then we decide how to remove conflict for our lb’s #425chat
Corners "create a new sideline" in their run fit (cloud coverage). Safeties "make the OLB/Force player right" (adjuster in their run fit). OLB/Force players need to "Squeeze" in their run fit. #425chat

A5: We try to eliminate conflict players as much as possible against RPO heavy teams. We try to free up our inside backers to play run and allow our secondary to read their keys and react. Also, we try to game false reads and games against a team’s favorite RPOs. #425chat
A2: DL will wrong arm through inside half of the blocker and then get VERTICAL to cause train wreck and/or make the play...LBs are taught to attack half man and keep separation with violent hands when encountering a blocker, scrape tight past spilling DLineman #425chat
A1: We must set the edge in our defense. Every defender has a “run fit.” But one thing we do emphasize with our backers is ILB play inside out and OLB play outside in while we all pursue and “compress.” Has made a huge difference for us. #425chat
A1-No issues as we cover game plan and responsibilities pre-practice in walk through, then reenforce it throughout practice and the week with reps. #425chat
A3: our safeties need to be the unlocked hat. Our star will play a cover down. I have found he makes more plays in the cover down than apex bc he can keep his eyes inside and see what’s going on. But we also teach our safeties tonread the tackle for low hat high hat read.#425chat
A3: We teach a slow step off to get our read. High hat = pass responsibly now. Low hat find the flow and fit. We tell our Linebackers and Nickel "don't go until you know." #425chat
A5) Identify what they want to do and who they want to have the ball. Give them the read they don't want. This can change it up sometimes. For example DE can play QB one play and tackle dive next play. This impacts the LBs. #425chat
One gap...ish. My LBs will have their initial gap, but the path of the back allows them them to pursue as needed. I don't see any point in having a LB plug the b-gap if the running back is heading towards the alley. Why waste a player just because "that's his gap"? #425chat
A2: d ends depend on the type I have. Fast guys go go go bigger spill tech. Lbs take on with outside arm free unless backside then check and get over blocks. Dts get head in gap and find ball. #425chat
A)3. Send them down to inside every now and then. We usually do Inside and 1 on 1’s at the same time. Have two groups of overhang players and rotate them between the two drills
A4a. Each position group has its key words for techniques. Teach & reteach in Indy. Carry it over to all periods. All use same tackling verbiage stating in the summer & all season.

Sorry I’m late coaches, had to finish the workout! Looking forward to the info!
#425chat
A2: We coach our E’s to square, squeeze and fight to keep O/S arm free, B/S checks reverse. Rovers can become the edge player depending on the run/pass read and his rules are the same. We coach our backers to work inside out, destroy the block, and clean up.
#425chat
Q3: Our 3 Safeties get work in Indy n pre-practice time getting run/pass reads of EMLOS and understanding how they fit in the run game...will do 1/2 field route rec n run fits at same time, CBs will almost always just go 1/2 field n Safeties do both switchin halfway thru #425chat
A5 - we aren’t afraid to plus LBs out of the box to get in to throwing lanes presnap. That helps to discourage the rise and throw. Need to include DL tags to cover for gaps that are left vulnerable to LBs outside of the box #425chat
A4: Single gap control defense...keeps it very simple, you know what to expect from your teammate and where they should be in the fit...allows everyone to play fast and RUN TO THE BALL #425chat
A6: Trust our reads and our calls. Get pressure on the QB. And rally to the ball. They're aren't a ton of single-A teams in Georgia that successfully run a true RPO system, so we didn't have to deal with it much. #425chat
A4: We are one gap. It is hard to find DL in HS who can truly two gap successfully. Yr to yr it allows for more consistency in a 1 gap defense. We do have some 2 gap schemes we will mix in, I.e. even front (2’s and 5’s or 2’s and 4’s) to negate heavy inside zone teams. #425chat
A1- spill to force player; force player defined by coverage. Sometimes it’s the alley, sometimes CB, sometimes the end- we tie name of coverage to force player...”bronco” is backer force etc
#425chat
A)5. We make our down safety to the field (we call Bandit) a “Pause” player = late to run game and responsible for C gap. Have to Spike the End in B gap. 2 high and ball in MOF and offense is 2X2 we apex the Will and make him C gap as well. #425chat
A5: Adapted our front and zone coverage schemes to defend RPOs. Weve given our kids specific assignments. We’re in a 3-3-5 similar to what Iowa State runs with their overhanging OLBs. Has allowed our athletes to be athletes in space while still being run and gap sound. #425chat
A4 - again I need to thank @FballIsLifeBlog for his #TGOG scheme. We have had a lot of success with this version of two gap at different places I have been. #425chat
A3: We try to keep it simple for our DBs, always play your coverage rules first, and if you don’t get a clear run read, play pass. We ask a lot from our Rovers, we really drill them on they’re keys and remind them they have help over top. #425chat
A5: Stop the run first...box/apex players are always run first...the remaining shell will take care of any route combos with the pattern match coverage called and rally to the ball when handed off #425chat
Great, that is exactly what I am referring to with "Run the Circle." It helps the DL to get back into the play. I tell them, "Don't just spill it, get back into the play and make the tackle."

A4: We play 1 gap. We’ve seen less mistakes and our kids flow faster to the ball. It also makes sense to them on the board and in walkthru, they trust each other and know everything is covered up.#425chat
A5- we either 1) play it out normally if we feel the offense is dabbling in RPO (doesn’t scare me) or 2) we’ll play more man stuff to get true reads...which will change our force players

Awesome to see this many coaches willing to chat and share information and ask for nothing in return. Once you think you are too good to learn you need to retire. Learning never stops in this sport 🏈
I’m going out on a limb and saying that was the #425chat with highest participation in 2 years! Love how many hungry coaches there trying to get better! See y’all Monday for the poll!
