Meet and chat with colleagues about Universal Design for Learning (UDL) on Twitter! The best hour of professional learning you'll get in 30 minutes. Held the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 9-9:30PM ET.
I am Megan Van Fossan, McGuffey School District Special Services Administrator. I think the best ingredient to good thinking is being able to notice and wonder. #udlchat
#UDLchat starts right now with @mmvanfossan & @min_d_j! Don't forget to put the hashtag in your tweets, answer Q1, Q2, Q3... with A1, A2, A3..., and follow those awesome new #UDL tweeps.
Lindsay from Ohio and I am excited to see these connections. I will be beginninga visibke thinking course in Jan. & UDL is my favorite! My favorite ingredient for thinking is collaboration! #udlchat
A little Background-Visible Thinking is a flexible and systematic research-based conceptual framework, which aims to integrate the development of students' thinking with content learning across subject matters. #udlchat
Hey #udlfam, this is Jennifer from Kentucky. My fav ingredient for learning is engagement. Without it my teaching, much like a cake with no flour, falls flat. #udlchat
Hi! My name is Madeline and I'm a pre-service elementary ed major at Grove City College. My favorite ingredient is the ability to think outside of the box #udlchat
A1) Vis Thinking is as much a cultural pursuit as it is an internal one. So it must be full of paradox Big voice/small voice, space for introversion/extroversion, order and routine/ chaos and innovation etc. It looks like many things #udlchat
A1 collaborating with peers, writing/typing/sketching ideas, raised hands, blurted Questions, the lightbulb when something resonates with them. #UDLchat
A1 Depending on your needs and preferences, task, and environment, thinking and learning take on different appearances. Im a silent processor, but I collab with lots of verbal processors and several doodlers. #udlchat
A1 Good thinkers know how to think creatively, critically and deeply. Ss that demonstrate a repertoire of thinking moves. Ss that observe, analyse and question. #udlchat
A1: Learners solving problems, making decisions, building new understanding from previous knowledge ... learners look like readers, writers, scientists, mathematicians, sociologists .... #udlchat
#udlchat A1) Looks like flexible options for expression (verbal, online, visuals-writing, drawing)...sounds like reflection. questioning, metacognition, safety in sharing
A1 student talk, choices, multiple means of representation and ways to express learning, goal setting along with reflection and student ownership for learning, Ts and Ss giving feedback, real world problems with connections to Ss lives #udlchat
A1: I think you might know what I’m going to say here… but CONTEXT is so important. Thinking can be quiet, noisy, busy, still. It all depends on the goal of the thinking/learning. #UDLchat
A1 Thinking and learning in my environment is organized chaos at times, but mostly self-directed, tailored for the needs of each of the students, diverse opportunities, and "Critical Thinkers At Work!" #udlchat
A1: it rarely looks the same from day to day. Exploration by Ss, group discussion, quiet reflection and analysis, Ss teaching me and each other. Engaged learners are great learners. #udlchat
Robin from the Lehigh Valley, Pa...joining late..favorite ingredient is reflection too...never can have too much but without it, "recipe" for learning is incomplete #udlchat
A2: I keep coming back to an environment that's safe to think, share your thinking, embrace the thoughts of others, safe to respectfully disagree. Doesn't matter if you're 2 or 102, you need to feel safe. #udlchat
A2 Laerning and thinking thrive when students are encouraged, supported, challenged, and when they know that they can ask questions, voice their ideas in a safe space, and when they know they’re respected. #UDLchat
A1: it rarely looks the same from day to day. Exploration by Ss, group discussion, quiet reflection and analysis, Ss teaching me and each other. Engaged learners are great learners. #udlchat
Tinsel. I think it's making a come back on trees, and on thinking. Getting into the visual thinking idea, I see thinking and tinsel: fun, sparkly, shinny, creative, unpredictable, surprising #obviouslytherearenowtoomanycharactersallowed#udlchat
A2 Learning best thrives in safe environments that are flexible, inviting, and positive...where trusting relationships and positive peer interactions are foundational. #udlchat
A2)for classrooms to thrive in Vis thinking Ss must have the comfort of a learning & thinking culture. to have cl/room culture Ts must have schools that honor learning & thinking. The feed up loop through systems. #udlchat
A2.5: There's also that beautiful balance between celebrating and affirming what you're thinking now, but also the gentle push to help you grow. #udlchat
#udlchat A2) thinking and learning thrive in democratic classroms where everyones voice matters! Trust, mutual respect, growth mindset, where mistakes are viewed as growth opportunities
A2 Thinking and learning thrive where every voice is heard, time is given, questioning and mistakes are welcome, feedback is positive, and it is safe and challenging. #udlchat
A2: Thinking and learning thrive when we recognize the variability our learners bring. Sometimes we need flexibility, and other times we need constraints. #UDLchat
A2: Thinking & Learning thrive when learners feel respected, safe to take risks, encouraged to explore their interests & be curious & where Ts learn alongside Ss. #udlchat
@RonRitchhart defines several cultural forces that must exist for a Culture of Thinking that must be in place before Visible thinking takes hold deeply #udlchat
Sorry, I was trying to be brief. It basically means to offer students multiple paths to get information, multiple ways to show what they learned and to do it in a way that is engaging to the student. https://t.co/0durqivgAs is a great place to learn more! #udlchat
A2)for classrooms to thrive in Vis thinking Ss must have the comfort of a learning & thinking culture. to have cl/room culture Ts must have schools that honor learning & thinking. The feed up loop through systems. #udlchat
A2 #udlchat under the condition that the student needs, can be experimenting, reflecting, doing, reading, playing and all the "ing" that you can think of

A3: Thinking routines are such a good idea! I have not thought about that specifically before. I believe removing threats and barriers for learners can help #udlchat
A3 I look to the multiple means of representation to help Ss activate prior knowledge and build on learning #projectbased#realworld curriculum #udlchat
In case you missed it (ohhhh so easy with all this UDL amazingness) Q3. What UDL Guidelines and Checkpoints support thinking routines and how can they be embedded in curriculum design?
#udlchat
A3: I think the intention for regular feedback and reflection helps support curriculum design. This helps learners and teachers see where they have grown in their own learning #udlchat
A3) Routines offer a sense of anonymity which ca be safe for Ss enculturated in failure but also provides the opp of trying. It makes visible our thinking in Multi ways. allows us to divorce product (thinking) from prescribed process. #udlchat
A3: I really like Engagement: options for self regulation- esp. facilitating coping skills and strategies- setting them up for success even when they leave your classroom! #udlchat
A3.5) but more than that it allows leraners to move deeper into the Expert Learner continuum and develop learner agency around contextualized, relevant, socially mediated learning #udlchat
CAST's #UDL Guidelines are an incredible tool in understanding and implementing Universal Design for Learning. You use them. You love them. We love them too. That's why we're giving our UDL Guidelines a new home and a fresh new look. Coming soon. From us, to you.
Q4. How can we help classrooms become places of intellectual stimulation where learning is viewed not in test scores but in the development of individuals who can think, plan, create, question, and engage independently as learners?
#udlchat
A3 Sustaining Effort/Persistence & Executive Functions. Ss need practice in setting challenging learning goals, strategizing, revising strategies, monitoring progress, & planning/executing complex tasks. When they leave us, they need those models to roll on & grow from. #udlchat
My favorite question!!!
A4. Choosing one thinking routine like See, Think, and Wonder allows Ss to form habits of mind and transfer them to any context. This helps students move beyond the superficial and dig deeper making the complex accessible. #udlchat
A3 - Engagement - Sustaining effort and recruiting interest, Representation - comprehension, Action and Expression - Executive function. To embed - it is all in the planning #udlchat
A3) Challenging myself lately to provide graduated levels of support so all learners can discover the point at which they feel success independently. #UDLchat
A4: When students know that teachers genuinely care for them and if they're not afraid to make mistakes in the classroom, that is when the classroom mindset shifts from worth being found in grades to worth being found in who they are #udlchat
A4 The learning needs to be relevant to the child. When Ss see the connection, the rest falls into place. Develop a #RightNow Curriculum instead of a #SomedayCurriculum#UDLchat
Almost there- In case you missed it! Q4. How can we help classrooms become places of intellectual stimulation where learning is viewed not in test scores but in the development of individuals who can think, plan, create, question, and engage independently as learners? #udlchat
A4: Giving students options in how they express what they learn. And giving opportunities to participate in authentic assessments where they will be able to reinforce and grow their learning in the “real world”. #UDLChat
Q4. How can we help classrooms become places of intellectual stimulation where learning is viewed not in test scores but in the development of individuals who can think, plan, create, question, and engage independently as learners?
#udlchat
A4 Talking to students about what learning is (it’s not a test score or a grade) and having them reflect on their progress, learning, and understanding and providing ample feedback to encouarge their thinking and learning. #udlchat
A4 - Foster and support a relentless focus on learning by both children and adults, and remember what matters most. How many graduates have you asked what they got on their state test? Yeah, none for me either. #udlchat
#udlchat A4) emphasis on the PROCESS of learning and growing. Goal setting and self reflection. Establishing the "why" and facilitating authentic experiences
We've made our thinking visible in #UDLchat tonight! Thank you so much to @mmvanfossan & @min_d_j for moderating our conversations. Next chat is December 20th. Stay tuned for details...
A4 The learning needs to be relevant to the child. When Ss see the connection, the rest falls into place. Develop a #RightNow Curriculum instead of a #SomedayCurriculum#UDLchat
A4) it is the accumulation of small repetitive wins: fractal change. It is in understanding that concepts like autonomy, mastery, purpose are not ONE thing but comprised of several(Task, time, team, technique etc). It is a continuum of opportunity #udlchat
A4: It starts wth providing Ts learning environments where THEY are engaged learners valued for their creativity instead of measured only by test scores. When Ts feel inspired & engaged as learners they will do the same for Ss. #udlchat
A4l: I think that before we can expect our Ss to change their mindset about learning and assessment, we have to change ours. This can be extremely difficult because of all of the testing pressures put on Ts #UDLchat
#udlchat A4: Be open! Hear & Listen. Allow for mistakes and ask Why?! Talk to Ss. Ss have great ideas. Allow for questions to breed questions and value that!
A4: When I see a classroom where all Ss are engaged and excited about learning, I don't care what their test scores are. To me, this is a much better indicator of future academic success than tests scores will ever be! #udlchat
A4 The learning needs to be relevant to the child. When Ss see the connection, the rest falls into place. Develop a #RightNow Curriculum instead of a #SomedayCurriculum#UDLchat
A4: setting the tone from the beginning of the importance of thinking, learning, creating, collaborating, failing, growing and the other parts will come. #udlchat
A4- Provide options and encourage executive functions with students setting goals, creating schedules and plans of action while the teacher fosters their development, supports the students, facilitates the process #udlchat
A4 my test for this is “Do my kids love learning more at the end of the year then when they started?” And “are they started to self advocate in their learning?” #udlchat
#udlchat A4: I find when we give teachers "permission" by helping them see the goal is expert learners vs. expert test takers, they are re-energized and change their class environments to support this goal!
That went soooo fast much love to @mmvanfossan & @min_d_j ! What an awesome and exhilarating chat tonight. As always #udlfam... Peace, Luv, and Belly Rubs to you all! #udlchat
Thanks for helping me THINK @min_d_j and @mmvanfossan! I love the thinking routines and knowing at least a few prevents the not-so-stimulating and stale questions like "Well, what did you think?" #udlchat
A4 my test for this is “Do my kids love learning more at the end of the year then when they started?” And “are they started to self advocate in their learning?” #udlchat
A4 I think Ron Ritchhart, Mark Church and Karin Morrison in their book https://t.co/hYz8ZTD6i4 best address how to help teachers make classrooms become places for 𝑴𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑽𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒃𝒍𝒆

Q4. How can we help classrooms become places of intellectual stimulation where learning is viewed not in test scores but in the development of individuals who can think, plan, create, question, and engage independently as learners?
#udlchat
A4 #UDLChat share objectives for learning, set goals with Ss, reflect, ask lots of questions #QFT Question Formulation Technique (favorite tool for asking ?s), allow for student talk and collaboration

A5: This is an example of why it's important to keep in mind that proficiency can be demonstrated in multiple forms. Talk to the student to determine if they are struggling with the actual concept or with the assignment. #sblchat
