#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, where you teach, and what subjects! My name is Kristin and I am your moderator tonight! I teach LA and SS in Lansing, MI.
A1) Interactive classrooms focus on learners through multiple modalities, opportunities for learners to make/create, collaborate, and "show" what they know. #6thchat
Hey #6thchat! I’m joining in from MD where I teach just 6th ELA! (I’m also trying to win @hqtrivia while typing… but don’t worry, I’ll be out of the game soon)
A1: When I think about the word; I think about a classroom buzzing with collaboration, making and creating, arts infusion, and students bring a part of the class culture. #6thchat
A1: Interactive classrooms allow the students to be part of the learning either physically or as a facilitator in some fashion. #6thchat (out on Q6 in HQ)
A2) Ss who are offered interactive learning experiences are able to apply learning immediately, and Ts are able to correct learning errors or probe learners for more details as needed. Ts need to plan ahead for these interactive experiences and reduce lecture time. #6thchat
A2: Advantages include being engaged in the learning and connecting with peers. Disadvantages I have found are those Ss that camouflage in the group and disappear. #6thchat
A1: I like the Ss led concept. Many of my Ss need more guidance & prompting. I think of it more as a hands on museum. Curated, somewhat predictive with a docent when needed. This is as far as I’ve gotten with ful inclusion ratios of 50/50. #6thchat
A2 ss are able to learn from one another - many times i feel that they are the best teachers! disadvantage if ss do not see purpose or are not invested- class can get rowdy fast. #6thchat

A3) I think some Ts are more concerned with keeping classroom quiet. Worksheets and passive learning activities are often perceived as easier to control. #6thchat
A3: Teaching is intense! Some like order and quiet, for others it is how they have always done. Some need balance! We did one active and one passive today. #mustremainsane#6thchat
A2: I think students can often benefit a lot from interacting. The tricky part is to balance the benefits with the off-task "interacting" that happens if they don't have a clear purpose that is understood. I'd say clear expectations help a lot. #6thchat
A3: I think it has to do with the idea of a quiet classroom being a well managed/efficient classroom. Loud rooms can be thought as being chaotic. I find myself double guessing myself when visitors stop by. #6thchat
Someone asked me about a @breakoutEDU activity I designed and wanted to know if they could quickly and easily replicate it…. not in the time you have, I told them. #6thchat
A3: Interactive classes don’t come in a box. I think you have to be at mastery on a few levels to create an school experience that is entirely 3D. I still don’t have my NGSS on straight. Not everyone can create in the fly. #6thchat
Sounds like a good balance for sure! And...some Ss respond better in a quieter environment. Planning interactive experiences don't always have to be noisy. Takes time for sure! #6thchat
A3: I feel like I need to work more on balance between quiet reading time (which I think really is essential) and time for students to talk with each other about what they're reading. #6thchat
KNOW THY STUDENTS - i try to find articles/materials that i know most of my students can relate / have discussions about... trying to peak their interest so they want to discuss / share opinions #6thchat
A4: I think what I need to do is plan activities and have a plan in place for students who have a tendency to be off-task. I want them to get the chance to do the interactive group work, but don't want them just sitting around talking about their video games...#6thchat
Me: Pick a strand. Make a question. Envision a product that shows the answer. Build it. Chronicle the steps. Look for places to add a few choice facts in the build process. Us: Replicate with Ss. #6thchat
A4 I feel like it has become such a part of the way we run our classroom that I don't go out of the way to intentionally plan for it. It happens much more naturally. #6thchat
A3: I feel like I need to work more on balance between quiet reading time (which I think really is essential) and time for students to talk with each other about what they're reading. #6thchat
A4 Try to plan ways to invite students to content they maybe wouldn't choose themselves so they see they can find interest in things beyond what they already have some schema about - collaborative discovery is engaging and empowering! #6thchat
Yes! It's hard bc we all have difference expectations / things we call 'acceptable' especially noise. I have a high tolerance, others not so much. #6thchat
A5) Tried @PearDeck this week! Ss loved it and asked if we could do that again. Game changer to use some slides and have Ss share thinking, respond along the way. Were able to draw, write, & vote! Very fun! #6thchat
A5: I couldn't really think of anything off the top of my head, but I did the same thing this week! 1st time this year and they enjoyed and so did I

@PearDeck is absolutely engaging. If you haven't tried the vocabulary factory yet, you must! So fun and effective in building student vocab. They LOVE it! #6thchat
This is so funny/interesting. It never once crossed my mind to define interactive as communication with others. I focused on interacting with things. #6thchat
A5: I analyzed Groundhog Day predictions using fractions and percents. It was really challenging, but many Ss kept plugging at it. They worked in groups and could move in to next step after completing each one. #6thchat
We have been doing demonstrations for this round of genius hour projects. Students are giving feedback, suggestions for next time, asking questions. #6thchat
A5 I try at least once a week to ask a question / or a quote on the board - students come in with a sticky note to answer and post it. Really simple but they love hearing each others thoughts #6thchat
A6: This chat is making me realize that I need to get in gear and start being more interactive! I switched from Soc. St. to Language this year and I don't have nearly as many interactive things in my Literacy "bag of tricks". :( #6thchat
A6 Just recently finally used @Flipgrid with my students. We were paired with a class from India for a project on Global Read Aloud Day. We used @Flipgrid#6thchat
A6 I've been using Backchannel Chat during our read aloud. The kids are enjoying and benefitting from sharing their thinking with each other in real time. Shared thinking that would otherwise be "lost" by not being shared. Corrects misperceptions and raises all thinking! #6thchat
Does a shared GDoc work for all of you? We wrote a book on one years ago. Worked great. Last year my Ss wrote on top of each other’s work. It was terrible. #6thchat
I have used it for a soundtrack project where Ss had to create a soundtrack to a book and linked the songs onto an album cover they created and explain how the song fits

A7: We’re toying with https://t.co/c09CgU5SGb to create our own .io games. The collaboration and sharing of new learning is great. Further interaction will come once we play. #6thchat
I do all of our grammar exercises via @nearpod weekly in a student paced lesson so that they can go at their own pace. I also do interactive read aloud this way as I have 30 Ss and they all love to participate!
A8 I am on a mission to talk books and share my reading with my students. Just finished Passionate Readers. @pernilleripp Next step to introduce my students to #BookSnaps#6thchat
#6thchat More amazing sharing and conversations! I will soon be off creating and investigating new interactive opportunities for my Ss due to all of you! Thanks!
This is great! I love it. Looking for another reading response challenge to add into our gamified independent reading work. This is going to be it! So fun and engaging! #6thchat
