Hi, I am Kayleigh and I'm an pre-service teacher at Grove City College!
Welcome to ! Topic: How do educators distinguish between trends and real substantive change in education?
A1: I feel that to distinguish between the two a teacher would most certainly need to keep up on current education events.
Hi Everyone! Kathy from CT grade 3
Ooohh...that's a great question! Guess I should think about how I'll answer it.
Hi I am Abby and I'm Pre-K - 4 major at Grove City College
My name is Jeni Rairigh and I am a preservice teacher at Grove City College. Excited to join tonight!
Good idea, but just another excuse for school districts to get rid of recess for more instructional time https://t.co/i1rg5kHnra

Hi ! I'm Jen from MO, and I hope to pop in and out tonight. Excited to learn together!
Is a trend something that eventually ends or could it be that trends are the beginnings of substantiative change?
I'm Philip Herzing and I'm also from Grove City College, as a pre-service English Teacher
So Abigail and jeni you in same course?
What is the topic tonight?
Hi I'm a preT from Grove CIty! Lookign forward to this chat
Trends don't change the paradigms
I think that trends could be the beginning of substantive change.
Just started Topic: How do educators distinguish between trends and real substantive change in education?
Well Jen... no need to answer... just do a little thinking out loud, here among friends.
I am Sydney a pre-service teacher from Grove City College

A1: Teachers need to be up to date on current educational events to be able to distinguish.
Educators outside of the classroom jump on the bandwagon more readily than those in the trenches. https://t.co/XrQnwK0w4H

Hi!!Happy to be here, Ylonka from Dominican Republic, ready to learn with you all, great question!!
Maker movement, Flipped classroom, Project Based learning, Are these trends or are they the next real iteration of education?
Oh my gosh..blushing..you are too kind..the one and only https://t.co/HHaifRPMqJ
The one, the only, the truly marvelous Kathy is here... WELCOME to
Trend ... the repackaging/renaming of something that was cool five years ago ... something that just replaces
iMO many edus DON’T distinguish between trends and substantive change. That’s part of the problem.
We have been a few chats together! :)
I feel like trends are more the little things you can add in for fun, whereas real changes take time and effort to develop
How might we curl ornery innovation in a way that both nurtures and assists?
Real substantive change insures focus on teaching and learning.....keeps the main thing the main thing
IN PROGRESS Topic: How do educators distinguish between trends and real substantive change in education?
I proudly stand in the shadow of Kathy ->
Hi . Joining you for a bit from Colorado.
No me, yet! Just joined this one last time! Hi!
Happy to see so many Grove City College students participating in tonight. Welcome!
I agree. A teacher can't distinguish without some sort of background in what's going on today.
Is it possible for a trend to become a substantive change if given the time?
Most of what you listed have made real waves in the past 5 years. Maker movement and PBLs revolutionize classrooms.
TED_ED: Thanks to kgoepenwee for co-hosting! Check this TED_Ed Lesson using this week's talk: https://t.co/KQuOQ2eipf
I agree, trends can be good and bad, as long as your class is based on elements that are stable and work https://t.co/qICLV4FQAz
I feel like trends are more the little things you can add in for fun, whereas real changes take time and effort to develop
A1: Trends will not stay long and won't be as large as real changed in education
Let's be honest almost everything is a trend not real change ... Education is cyclical ... we repackage ideas more than create new.
I would assume trends eventually end. Like leg warmers! Definitely a trend that ended ha
I wonder how motive and purpose relate to whether it makes changes or not, or if trend lasts https://t.co/bRzNvkiWL6
Most of what you listed have made real waves in the past 5 years. Maker movement and PBLs revolutionize classrooms.
certainly! However they must be related to real education and the best thing for our Ss to learn!
I think that in order to distinguish between the two, the educator needs to stay up to date.
Lots of new folks participating in tonight. Welcome everyone.
All of these are trends. Not judging, but they are iterations of current paradigm. Personally integrating https://t.co/h35Z0P8jx0
Maker movement, Flipped classroom, Project Based learning, Are these trends or are they the next real iteration of education?
I was thinking the same thing. I have actually seen the same books come back https://t.co/1NaySaRkhL
Let's be honest almost everything is a trend not real change ... Education is cyclical ... we repackage ideas more than create new.
SO important! https://t.co/kkqPOh2LLE
I think that in order to distinguish between the two, the educator needs to stay up to date.
I think a trend can become a substantial change over time if it is found to be successful
Admin support changes the trajectory — a well-supported idea is more likely to move past the "trend stage" and become substantive.
. Yes, they are all successful to an extent, but are they system wide and fully supported?
It's in the implementation. It's a trend if I go to a workshop and come back an evangelist. Change takes learning and fidelity.
RT : Is it possible for a trend to become a substantive change if given the time?
I'm looking for middle/high school teachers with experience teaching coding for a cool opportunity
I believe that the advances of technology advance education in a way that is non reversible, so it is a substantive change.
A lot of trends can be things that "seem" new, but are actually similar concepts that have always been in place in the classroom
Their students are eager for Mondays, so they can learn with them ->
I think the potential for that type of long term impact is hinged on who adopts the trend and how it is spread by leadership
Is it better to follow a trend, or follow your heart?
And how do parents? https://t.co/LLyh0WD7DF
IN PROGRESS Topic: How do educators distinguish between trends and real substantive change in education?
I think Ts need to step back and see the big perspective to tell the difference between trends and substantive change in ed
"Making" has been around for years ... not really new ... just rediscovered ... the constructivist approach
Trends come and go. Good teaching remains constant. Focus on good teaching and everything will work out.
I completely agree with this!
Gradeless , non-age based advancement...those would be transformative
Follow your heart. Do what is in your gut https://t.co/IMipHI7pV9
Is it better to follow a trend, or follow your heart?
Agreed! https://t.co/Uilfej3k83
"Making" has been around for years ... not really new ... just rediscovered ... the constructivist approach
Dennis is the embodiment of honesty -> Listen to what he says...
It takes TIME for trends to show whether they are fads or really substantive changes.
System-wide is key. Lone rangers make things work until they don't. System support is crucial.
TREND. noun. plural: trends
1.a general direction in which something is developing or changing.
Evaluate it like a researcher; if it sounds too good to be true, it likely is! https://t.co/lbFzpxgJ6I https://t.co/J8Ainmib3z
Welcome to ! Topic: How do educators distinguish between trends and real substantive change in education?
Trends, fads, and popularity can dull the senses and stymy action… be careful.
folks: Flex Lunch/1-Hr HS lunches effective? Looking at a 4x6 rotating wheel. Feedback welcomed for Q&A.
Lots of folks jump on the bandwagons of edu fads/trends without clue how it helps kids. Focus needs to remain on students.
I think it really depends on what it is and who you are.
I think that it is better to follow your heart, but if they are connected in some way, it should be done.
Before the STEM/STEAM grants changed the name we called them integrated projects ...
How do you give your students voice? This is one of the most empowering confidences & skills you can teach. https://t.co/n7pYOohYiN
A1: Real change sticks with students and increases their achievement. Trends don't have the same impact
If you are teacher and have not jumped on with flipped, maker, PBL, etc. you can still be a good teacher. No shaming.
Teachers -- chime in on happening now to share what resources you use in your classroom!
I see trends as things that we can add in to what we are teaching to make it more interesting for the students.
. EduFads come & go. But the three you list here are all rooted in best practices, authenticity, regardless of buzzwords!
Rachel, that's an Interesting perspective... especially like the 'fun' part. Thanks!
Will any of these trends overcome the deeply rooted source of in education?
Some take the current buzz words and twist the new concept to fit what they are already doing, thus muddying the water for all.
Bandwagons are fun to jump on ... they make some cool noise ... not necessarily wrong unless they take you back to where you started
that's a tough one, especially when both are in the best interest of your Ss.
so Josh... are this trends or substantive changes? That's what we're chatting about...
You sound "old school" but you speak my language! It's just what I've always done. You, too? https://t.co/IDJdva4wxY
Before the STEM/STEAM grants changed the name we called them integrated projects ...
Trends are about what we are. Substantive change is about what we MUST BECOME.
..or they change the buzz words to something new and keep doing pretty much the same stuff.
Outstanding point https://t.co/YGAPMZMiQg
Will any of these trends overcome the deeply rooted source of in education?
Lots of trends are good for teachers, but not always for students...better to try and individualize instruction than follow a trend
Not sure it matters. Does it help kids now? Then go with it.
Interesting question. Not many trends are even trying to address inequality in edu.
Exactly. I love my unit on dinosaurs so now it will be a maker space on them with the 3D printer.
"Student Centered" strange that this concept is considered revolutionary/innovative ... shouldn't it have always been this way?
New ideas often aren't given time to fully develop. Teachers try new things without the latitude to fail and make it better.
IN EDUCATION what sounds to good to be true is most likely a fad or aren rather than a substantive change…
Are Edcamps a trend or a substantive change in professional Development?
Trends can be good such as the ice bucket challenge
I'm a parent who works in ed but outside schools. Can be too easy to support from the outside, but outside perspectives also help.
Does anyone have an example of a teaching trend that was a total flop?
how about open classrooms and how they started? first one that came to mind...
. I agree-good Ts can use strategies, incorporate elements of Maker movement/PBL without embracing the title/bandwagon
Depends on ones definition of a flop
TEACHERS the best gauge for determining trends from substantive change are the faces of your students. They know. It shows…
So are we helping those that need it the least? We need transformation in thinking about transformation
Trends will come and go; however I think that by focusing on good teaching and improving upon ourselves, trends won't matter.
and the supt. changes every 2.5 years and the principal every 5 or so.
While I think its important for educators to know the difference, cant trends be just as meaningful even if they end?
I think edcamps are a substantial change because they are allowing educators to grow in their knowledge and connect with others
I believe Edcamps are a substantial change. They are a successful and informative way for educators to collaborate and connect
Ask yourself"why & how are you learning now?" What has made the biggest diff to your own learning & is it diff for kids
Enough of the fads, sound bites, foolish ideas…t’s time that the field of education takes itself seriously.
I'd say complete failure to engage students. total lack of learning occurring.
I think a trend. It has the feel of trying to be a more hip conference, but really doesn't deliver that kind of quality
I am thinking all of this testing we now do.
Has it been? Perhaps "innovative" doesn't always mean new, but something that's finally happening. https://t.co/M3PPa8WIw8
"Student Centered" strange that this concept is considered revolutionary/innovative ... shouldn't it have always been this way?
sure can... just don't conflate trends with substantive change..and vice versa .
The idea is definitely gaining momentum and exposure, too. Think that's important to future change https://t.co/GuxcGWOx4X
I believe Edcamps are a substantial change. They are a successful and informative way for educators to collaborate and connect
Looking to bump up a resume lesson for gr 8 Ss. Has anyone done video resumes with their Ss. Looking for ideas 😀.
IF IT FITS ON A BUMPER STICKER, or is mentioned more than ten times during weekly staff meeting it’s not substantive change.
Trends like new technology can sometimes work really well, but will always be changing with advancements
Good point Jeremy... Thanks for sharing...
Thats very true testing may not be the trend that we want to go down
textbooks. I feel like for a majority of students, it is the absolute worst way to learn.
Exactly! It all starts with great teaching. Always has. Always will.
. I disagree with that. I am not sure it is yet beyond a trend, but it is substantive PD for many who experience it.
I think you get out of an Edcamp what you put in. I've personally gotten some great ideas/connections https://t.co/zgLx1k1IOb
I think a trend. It has the feel of trying to be a more hip conference, but really doesn't deliver that kind of quality
Or linking Ss data to teacher evaluations
That makes sense. If its a great idea but executed poorly, its not going to get good results.
That is a good point, but in the moment it is sometimes hard to know if a trend is a change to stay or not
Quality education is challenging. I keep thinking about Dewey and Freire and how on point both were https://t.co/wzVqQkD3Pc
Enough of the fads, sound bites, foolish ideas…t’s time that the field of education takes itself seriously.
Or if it's an acronym? https://t.co/x2dgfQXKpA
IF IT FITS ON A BUMPER STICKER, or is mentioned more than ten times during weekly staff meeting it’s not substantive change.
Hands on has and will always be the best way to learn
I will agree it is early, but I feel like it often lacks direction. One I went to was not organized, might be biased .
I agree and us as teachers need to learn to adapt to the changes and learn from them
maybe "Student Centered" has always been THE WAY... but some folks have lost their way... and a few find their way back
disagree it's far more aligned with andragogical principles than pedagogical drive by PD
I think the personalized nature of an Edcamp is the most appealing. Also ease of starting important convos https://t.co/lTQWz37iiL
. I disagree with that. I am not sure it is yet beyond a trend, but it is substantive PD for many who experience it.
HA, yes... don't get me started about education acronyms...
Structural inequity is underneath regardless of what's on top. But then there's inclusion. More than a trend.
I think this could really be paradigm shift. Ts directing and leading Ts! PD less decisive overall https://t.co/8AReQ75pDg
Are Edcamps a trend or a substantive change in professional Development?
I agree! I think technology as a whole will be applied for long term use but constantly changes!
Afraid I have to take my leave for tonight's chat. It was good dropping in while I could. Thanks to all for the smart thinking.
Hmm how about observation? (she says sarcastically)
. I agree, Ts are done with sit and get PD. We don't teach our Ss this way anymore, why should we be subject to it.
yes... and add Bloom to that list...
is in one week! Wednesday 11th May, 8:30pm (NZDT) moderated by year 11 student
I suggest you try again--every Edcamp is completely different! https://t.co/Zw6KDPR0LU
I will agree it is early, but I feel like it often lacks direction. One I went to was not organized, might be biased .
Inclusion for SE students is transforming
Is substantive change measured by a standardized test?
, couldn't agree more. Students don't particularly care about the trends, rather what's important will stick with them
I'm always up for second tries! Any recommendations? What are some that you enjoyed?
a thing isn't beautiful because it lasts.
Does each year of students provide a new trend that teachers must adjust to?
I think that depends on the lead learners you ask. If the lead learner supports it, the change can happen. I'm a witness.
There is so much resistance on ALL trends introduced. Good ideas don't even get an opportunity to manifest into substantive change
Absolutely enjoy Tuesday eventing conversations on twitter! Definitely helps me grow as an educator
I live in MO, so I've only been to but in 5 yrs we've become the biggest! So many great ideas https://t.co/IOtUkiJ0WW
I'm always up for second tries! Any recommendations? What are some that you enjoyed?
Good point. I feed off my Ss wants and needs https://t.co/DmIuaNrzt2
Does each year of students provide a new trend that teachers must adjust to?
Yes. If it’s in an acronym then Admin will pay attention to it. Glad Art got in STEAM. I gues now we’re legit. Pffft!
Working hard to be transformative and not succeeding is defeating. Iteration allows false starts.
I believe standardized testing to be a very touchy subject with people
There has to be a better way. Enough with the testing
Right, right. Motive plays a huge role in keeping these changes in place. So does financial support. 💰💯
... must substantive change last? Be beautiful? Or is it just substantive change?
, I would think so. Each year of students is different so it makes sense for trends to change with them
attitude ... that is the biggest difference ... not about tech but about how learning is approached. it is experienced
Standardized tests are very limiting in testing what Ss ACTUALLY know. Ts need to be careful to not rely on it too heavily
Also like that there can be so many difrnt topics in one day, dpending on attendees
So true, the age and tech gap sometimes put Ts behind the times when they need to keep up with their Ss https://t.co/uCyGY7bNtH
Does each year of students provide a new trend that teachers must adjust to?
just thought the quote fit! Haha. But substantive change takes many forms. Iterations.
The main trend I remember from when I was back in school was getting a smart board and never using it
So Garret... why so much resistance?
Standardized testing test grit and perseverance, stress level, patience etc. ; not intelligence https://t.co/0ec6wbASrJ
Standardized tests are very limiting in testing what Ss ACTUALLY know. Ts need to be careful to not rely on it too heavily
Was also just suggesting that my best exp have been when I really tried to dig in, or to facilitate a convo
Hi I'm majoring in secondary Ed. for English
I strive to be a "bellwether" for education. Not to promote "trends" but project my passion into the world https://t.co/NFIyvWLqbi
I guess it's pretty easy to identify tech as a trend if it's not put to effective use!
New to be used... ... it's a long list ...
yes I agree we can't not rely on standardized testing to test the full knowledge of our students
I'm pushing, but I don't believe I am doing something "revolutionary" or difficult ...
interesting perspective...
Interactive whiteboards were to be the big substantial change in education. Has that ever taken hold or is that a passing trend?
. depends on if we can keep it from jumping the shark.
Current topic is super Trends or substantial change?
Excellent point. We are often forced to change to the next new thing before the old thing has a chance to take root.
so Dennis... what'd happen if instead of pushing...you relaxed into it?
putting Ts in charge of PD design is scary for some leaders
I think the potential was there but the funding and education was not
top-down approach to each new trend introduced! Also, "teacher convenience" outweighing "best for kids" too often.
Teachers need to be educated on current educational trends and understand what would work best in their specific classroom.
resistance comes from fear. The fear of failure can block the positive that can come from new ideas
. That is the biggest problem with change, it is always scary to somebody.
a portion of education is timeless...
relax? I get bored with the same ... always trying something different ... IDC if trendy
is changing English language learning for students grades 1-9. Would you like to be a tutor? https://t.co/0ezxZSMIWP
Thanks... makes so much sense.
Application! Application! Application! Apply understanding! Synthesize! Evaluate! https://t.co/SwpiIBUFkR
We need to move kids from passive learner to active doer.
agreed! The rhetoric around "innovation" makes for little to no transition between trends or substantive changes!
I find Ts are similar to a lot of Ss, hard to get them to take the risk of failing.
Who thinks you're giving a better education than you got? If so, what do you attribute that to?
I think that knowing the trends can help with the real substantive change in education
didn't mean be a slacker... meant jujitsu (take what comes, use its force to create force...
change is only scary to those who are comfortable ... traveling at the same "safe" speed
very much agreed. If we never took risks, how will we know if something is successful? A lot of Ts are scared of this
I agree that they serve a purpose, they just aren't the all-inclusive tool that some people treat them to be
It's about relevance& interest. Watch how kids learn when fluent outside of class Soc media huge impact on what & how
I'd say so.Definitely more stu- centered, personalized/not worksheet based. /paper https://t.co/nKyI0D346x
Who thinks you're giving a better education than you got? If so, what do you attribute that to?
Please join for tonight at 7pm Central. Topic: "Formative Assessment & Standards Based Grading."
. Educators have been programmed to believe Failure is bad. Failure is how we learn.
I don't think you can learn anything inside your comfort zone. Learning is uncomfortable!
lol! My sister just asked that when her school discarded Smartboards for Prometheans. I had to tell her yes.
maybe if knowing what each means then knowing the difference between them will be clearer and easier to distinguish.
sometimes "stuff" jneeds 2b deflected. we need to be wise enough to not buy into the hype
no one gets everything right every time.
Good reminder and food for thought. https://t.co/UlJ6hQEUKw
Dear Teachers,
If you give a kid a worksheet don't be mad when they cheat. You gave them a cheating opp NOT a learning opp.
RT:@DennisDill@tomwhitby@envirojer I don't think you can learn anything inside ur comfort zone. Learning is uncomfortable!
stationary IWB’s are on their way out. They keep the teacher at the front of the class, expensive, and will be outdated
Hi JH science teacher and masters student in ITEM at UW.
and Erica... what is the source of fear? Look deep, what do you see?
well then ... Starship Enterprise... deflector shields are up!
. Also tell them that if we want kids to understand that we learn through failure,we need to stop punishing them for it.
agreed. Something of that manner could have been beneficial. Smart Boards weren't the answer.
I don't know. I learned to feel safe in the arms of loving parents...seems pretty comfortable to me :-)
We get anything out of what we put in. Self-driven learning doesn't work either if you don't start the car. https://t.co/o5d9AxwRrl
I think you get out of an Edcamp what you put in. I've personally gotten some great ideas/connections https://t.co/zgLx1k1IOb
I think a trend. It has the feel of trying to be a more hip conference, but really doesn't deliver that kind of quality
I can be hard to tell by the surface, but trends are shallow & real change is deep; trends are easy & change is...well, not as easy.
What’s difference between Smartboard and Promethean?
Everybody wants technology until it doesn't move, doesn't work, or is to expensive...my problem with it. *sigh*
Time spent re-teaching the previous year’s material by 66% of teachers

Mostly software I think..brand names right? https://t.co/gAyEbMw49I
What’s difference between Smartboard and Promethean?
there are several reasons people fear change. The biggest sources are self doubt and lack of support
Safe and comfortable are not the same. We need to make our students feel safe enough to be uncomfortable
This! https://t.co/n6y29oOyt8
Safe and comfortable are not the same. We need to make our students feel safe enough to be uncomfortable
where does fear come from?
I love this! Just like
"What is popular isn't always right and what is right isn't always popular."
Sure. Just noting that I learned to feel safe by being in a comfortable place as a child. Safety was the lesson
At CA our small group classes stay small with a maximum of 10 students led by a seasoned pro.
https://t.co/lTi2EWJNyW
not a whole lot. I was amazed. My thought is get tech in hands of learners- not reinforce sage on stage!
They sure don't work without 'em! https://t.co/uNlpiOmT6Y
trends and innovations help when paired with dynamic, caring, teachers. Stagnation is a downer.
has done extensive work on doing away with grades. Check him and his site out.
trends taken less seriously each time. Anticipation of the end of new trend and beg of newer trend=fear
Seems to me any solution that is expensive Hware that is outdated in 4-5 years is waste of resources. Mobile is better!
They changed how a lot of school spent their money. https://t.co/PRGjA6NsQC
Interactive whiteboards were to be the big substantial change in education. Has that ever taken hold or is that a passing trend?
thank you! I will start reading and researching tonight. Love what you do with this twitter chat
Thanks --> for bringing your A-game to Learned lots from you tonight!
so... did these start as trends?
lack of support is huge. Often those seeking buy-in are not the ones affected by the change/trend.
Melissa for bringing your good stuff to Learned lots from you tonight!
Exactly! Mobile tech is THE only way to go. IWB app like makes T mobile and records lessons for st access.
What is a good hashtag for K-5 spec ed teachers to follow??
I like them, but personally find them a waste of money. Nothing is better than writing with a dry erase marker
I learn lots from you all the time, Mark!
Great question tonight!
THANKS for bringing your A-games to Learned lots from you tonight!
Thanks for bringing your A-game to Learned lots from you tonight!
. I believe that it is the change that really scares people. Technology however gets all the blame.
MANY THANKS for bringing your A-game to Learned lots from you tonight!
fear related to T Evals tied to test scores, "wasted time"- but sometimes irrational
Have to go, it was my first time participating and I loved it, thanks great discussion and a lot to digest
Fs never seem to improve a kid's academic trajectory, but they do seem to increase the crash radius.
LOVE this! Being uncomfortable is the best way to prosper through challenges and learn even more
YES! Mistakes are proof that you're trying!!! This should indeed be hung everywhere
I find that a lack of purpose, clarity, reason, and justification for change is what is scary. 1/2
Completely agree. We easily mistake our rituals for our missions & then defend them like missions.
Telling people they need to use tech to be 21st-Century is scary.

yes. Self doubt and a lack of trust in what we are capable of, questioning. What is unknown is where fear stems
. Sorry, we are not together on that. Tech is here to stay and it will continue to evolve and influence change.
Thanks for a great chat! I always love learning from all of you!
THANK YOU for participating in look at trends and change in education. Hope to see you same time next week, different question...
Gotta toot our horn here. functionality of IWB w/out expensive hardware. Gets T amongst STS/ records lessons
all of life wrapped up in that question.
If one lacks fluency in the digital world, it limits opportunities...even with basics like getting a job.

Well said Erica... thanks for stepping up (and putting up with me)... Hope you'll join us next week for another

Thanks Phillip... hope to see you same time next week at

would we see more fearlessness if trends/change came from a different place?
A big THANK YOU to all the amazing teachers out there!!!
Agree! We need to evolve as educators to embrace the tech our students know/love/use. https://t.co/nFZlQ8TwZm
