  • hturk139 - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:16 AM EST
Yes! So often I'm so focused on connecting globally that I forget there are different 'cultures' just within our country! #nt2t

  • gwena_walker Jan 13 @ 9:17 AM EST
A2: Cons: Lack of face-to-face accountability can breed further potential for bullying online. I am learning this is an epidemic across our country sadly. Pros: I have grown my pln immensely through Twitter. I learn so much from others here!!! #nt2t

A2 - Familiarity breeds understanding and contempt at the same time. The more we learn more of each other, the more we find things in common and the more we reveal our true selves. #nt2t
  • jschwartzcen Jan 13 @ 9:19 AM EST

A2) Pro, we can connect with so many others across the world, including directly with experts and other prominent people. Con, if you become well-known on Twitter, your missteps can be amplified. #nt2t
  • JKatzaman Jan 13 @ 9:20 AM EST
A2 A small world breaks down barriers if you are welcoming and open-minded. On the other hand, if you get into heated disagreements, it can be like fighting in a phone booth. (Yeah, I still remember them.) #NT2t
  • leemaxfield29 Jan 13 @ 9:20 AM EST
Q2: Pros-learning from educators in other countries. They face similar issues and share their experiences. Cons-mean people (though personally I haven’t experienced that, but I pretty much only follow and look at educators). #NT2T
  • hartel30 Jan 13 @ 9:21 AM EST
A2. Can make our world too small if we only surround selves with same views. Echo chamber twists reality into a narrow tunnel. #NT2t
  • hturk139 - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:21 AM EST
A2: Pros- Offering opportunities to all Ss, leveling the playing field, opportunity to make a global impact from a young age Cons- Wider negative audience, easy to be drowned out, bullying, addictive #nt2t

Q3: Sometimes a differing opinion or stance is hard to hear. How do you respond? #NT2t
  • mexusmx Jan 13 @ 9:24 AM EST
I was just reading a thread last week where a T felt that #twitter was too agreeable and no pushback was allowed. Made me think... #nt2t
    In reply to @hturk139, @hartel30

  • JKatzaman Jan 13 @ 9:25 AM EST
A3 No two people are alike. Each has a slightly different point of view. Listen to what others say with understanding if not agreement. #NT2t
  • hartel30 Jan 13 @ 9:26 AM EST
I can see this in some quarters. This though seems to be more normal in life generally and not just a twitter thing. #nt2t. Important to watch out for it.

A3: When it comes to students you have to prepare them and tell them that not everybody shares their opinions or views. Cultures across the world are very different but we must always be respectful. #Nt2t
  • hturk139 - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:27 AM EST
I agree, most people are very agreeable. Perhaps it's not that everyone agrees, but that we disagree respectfully enough that it doesn't feel like an argument. I have seen some rude pushback though... #nt2t

  • mexusmx Jan 13 @ 9:27 AM EST
On the one hand, I think we could all use less conflict and that draws us in to #Twitter. But, I also wonder if there's some lost learning opportunities that need to be considered... #nt2t
    • leemaxfield29 Jan 13 @ 9:25 AM EST
That is an interesting point. The chats I attend, people tend to agree. I was part of one where it started to get heated, but only once and I’ve been on quite a few chats.

  • hartel30 Jan 13 @ 9:27 AM EST
A3. Sometimes by not responding. Listening and thinking/considering first can be crucial. When time to respond do so in a manner of respect. #NT2t
  • jschwartzcen Jan 13 @ 9:28 AM EST
This is the key-- to disagree respectfully which we must teach and model for our students. #Nt2t
    In reply to @hturk139, @leemaxfield29, @mexusmx, @hartel30
  • hturk139 - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:28 AM EST
It's a really good point to consider. I know for myself, most of the time if I don't agree with something I just keep it to myself because I don't want to start anything. But maybe I should question more, both for my own growth and others. #nt2t
    In reply to @mexusmx
  • leemaxfield29 Jan 13 @ 9:29 AM EST
A3: Be respectful. If you don’t agree, that is ok because it is your opinion, but don’t attack the other person. If need be, walk away or leave the chat if it is upsetting you. Life is too short. Find something to make you happy and forget about it. #NT2T
  • JeremyDBond Jan 13 @ 9:30 AM EST

For consideration: As we all are talking about disagreeing respectfully, we need to be sure that we can accept disagreement respectfully. I know that when others question me, I can get defensive. And yet, I use questions to learn more about differing opinions. Thoughts? #nt2t
