A1. I tell my students that we all get to play the game even if we don't level up. Too often novice/1 on rubrics are written as what is missing from a as work. Focus on getting kids to want to level up #formativechat
R1: Games can be used anywhere in the learning process, from introductions to assessments! Learning can be gamified by taking content and putting it into a different format or looking at it another way to make it into a challenge/problem that needs to be solved. #formativechat
R1: Also, some games I play in my classroom include learning WWII facts via Battleship, Idioms via a type of Balderdash...I love turning board games into games I use in my classroom! #formativechat
A1: Adding game elements and mechanics to any lesson. Creating leaderboards to share mastery. Creating quests that give students choices in learning. #formativechat
I love it!! Problem solving is really what we need to be focusing on! I don't ask Ss what they "want to be" anymore.. I ask them "what problem do you want to solve?" #formativechat

A1) Provide instant feedback to students. When playing games, feedback is almost immediately given and the user knows if they made a good choice... We can apply this to teaching while making sure our feedback is specific, detailed, and relevant #FormativeChat
A1 Not an expert at all here but I love what @classcraftgame offers. I also love the idea of badges. Trying to shift our PD a bit in 2018 for Ts. Move past "playing the game", with a game! #formativechat
@quizizz definitely has gamification qualities for sure. The Ss love looking at the leaderboard. They also learn, slow and steady is the way to go. #formativechat
Interesting! I'm trying to develop my tasks to fit the narrative so my game will be #gbl and not just #gamification. Can you please share an example of a task you give? How does it relate to the theme? #formativechat

I'm a huge fan of @classcraftgame and used it for a few years when I taught 6th grade. Huge buy in from the students and it made everyday an adventure! #formativechat

I like Quizizz as an alternative choice too! I also like Quizalize because you can simply import a Quizlet game. No need to reinvent the wheel! #formativechat
Oh yes!! I've wanted to do that in my class too, but haven't yet- wanted to have questions on the Jenga blocks that they answer as they pull them out. Is that what you do? #formativechat
A1: I try to turn anything I can into a fun game. Any activity to get Ss up and moving about. QR codes scattered, AR games, breakout, etc. #formativechat
A1: quests & side quests make learning goals more engaging, badges are a positive extrinsic motivator, and #gamification becomes a powerful intrinsic motivator when done well (i.e. fun & focused) #formativechat
Especially when the challenge is different and not the same old same old every single day! #formativechat Not to mention that when you vary them, you have a better chance of including more students as successful!
I have not, but it is because the leaderboard is not tied to grades. I still make it optional i.e. if you want your anme removed from the leaderboard, just tell me. #formativechat
I use it along with Quizlet as a choice each day. It has mastery mode which lets both you and the students know where their gaps in understanding are. BOOM! #formativechat
I think many of us just love games. My students loved it when we pushed the desks out of the way and bowled our way through review or tossed a ball around to talk about character. It didn't need to be digital. #formativechat
My advice is to have students give and receive feedback from each other while you support as needed. I feel this method is extremely valuable since it also encompasses 21st century learning skills through collaboration and communication! #FormativeChat
I can, I will send you the site I use for some! Then I just use materials we have to create new games. We always do day one I Do & they play with me, day 2 We Do and do together, day 3 They Do with a partner. I do, We do, They do. This helps them master the games
#formativechat
So true. Not all students want to throw a ball or answer trivia questions, but if you sometimes do one or the other, you get all students engaged! #formativechat

It's so fun once the students understand how to play! I made decks of cards with idioms, and the Dasher reads the idiom and writes down the real def. while others write down what they think it means. They learn a lot of idioms and it's fun to see what they know! #formativechat
Most definitely. You can have Ss solve mysteries and unlock codes. For their breakouts I had riddles of literary elements. The choices are endless. #formativechat
A1: Some general #gamification tips - make student progress visual, feedback is immediate, allow for respawns (mistakes), teach students to embrace challenge/mistakes, empower students by making them part of creating it, differentiate through levels #formativechat

Depends on what you exactly want to do here. @SusanWalterich created an awesome Harry Potter Digital Breakout, others with an ELA 9 class and some in our HS Library. We've done Shakespeare digital breakouts too. #formativechat
Not to mention that not all of them give me the data I need (and crave really... LOL) so I need to make sure I am using a variety of ones that give me data! #formativechat
I know, it is AMAZING! You create classes. It is also backed by research showing gains in vocabulary with usage. I know my intervention Ss try out all kinds of words (and look them up, and want to) to try to get more points. Amazed! #formativechat

It can be as simple as giving learning tasks more interesting names and a sequence, but I like to create a storyline on a theme (sometimes based on literature or games). So determining factors is actually cracking a code to open a chest or key vocab=password #formativechat
True story! It is like a fire hose. Pick one or two and experiment with your students. If they like them, add them to your tool belt. If they don't, move onto something else. #formativechat
Competition with care is important for introverts and those without confidence (or who may try as they might but can't reach the spot they want to be in). Think about how the progress is visual. Choice? #formativechat
A2: Gaming allows students to experiment with creativity and seek challenge and social connections, while also being independent and self-directed. Students who can create and then challenge themselves and others will likely be better learners and more successful. #formativechat
A2 well designed gamification allows students to track their own progress, desire to achieve goals, and build on further depth into learning. #formativechat
I also have been known to ask the students how to turn something into a game! They have so much more creativity than I can ever hope to! #formativechat
A2: Because it can be differentiated students are more willing to participate and take risks. It's up to Ts to structure for a safe environment. #formativechat
A2: Gamification helps Ss physically see their skill set up against someone else. it is a motivator and something that engages learners. #formativechat
gamify is applying game-like mechanics to non-game entities to encourage a specific behaviour (e.g, badges) whereas game based learning is learning through games (e.g, Monopoly, Clue, online) - there is a difference. #formativechat
A2 gamification is something that Ss do all the time, they play games, at home, for teams, and allows Ss to feel more comfortable #whitmanwtps#formativechat
A2: Students should be involved in the creation of games, quests, teams, characters, etc. You know the learning goals, but allowing students to help create the path to it both empowers them and makes the goal more achievable. #formativechat
A2 gamified learning helps Ss build motivation. Ss begin to want to “level up” and learn more. As Ss motivation increases they want to learn more to collect badges or rock the leader board #formativechat
A2 It allows for risk taking in a safe environment. It's not fail and you're done. It's fail, hit reset and go again. I liken it to my attempts at beating Mike Tyson in Nintendo's Punch Out. Eventually took down the big guy. Learned from many mistakes. #formativechat
A2: In my experience, gamification allows for student ownership of learning since beyond the rules of the game, they are given many opportunities to make choices and decisions that ultimately further their learning! #formativechat
Or just life skills. Still can't believe we are 19 years into the 21st century. When did that happen!!!! (in 2 years, 1990 will be 30 years ago. WHAT?!?!) LOL! #formativechat
A2: Because it can be differentiated students are more willing to participate and take risks. It's up to Ts to structure for a safe environment. #formativechat
A2: Gamification allows students to take risks, collaborate with their peers, and work on their critical thinking and communication skills. And teachers get data from it! WIN-WIN if you ask me! #formativechat
A2: Because of the high interest high engagement, Ss want to keep up with their progress. The competitive spirit is strong in high school Ss! #formativechat
Don't remember if I ever beat Iron Mike but do remember trying and trying and not giving up, trading notes w friends on what did/didn't work so we could do better next time:) #formativechat
It's funny how we get into these obsessions. Right now I'm all intoi the learning paths, and need to start thinking about changing it up so they remain "new" to the Ss. #formativechat

A2: At this point in the year I like to ask students to choose which games we will use to practice activities for the week - or what games they want me to check out to see if I can get them to work. #formativechat
A2: Students should be involved in the creation of games, quests, teams, characters, etc. You know the learning goals, but allowing students to help create the path to it both empowers them and makes the goal more achievable. #formativechat
A2 Allows students to explore 21st Century Skills. Explore content in a different way. there is a comfort in playing games for many students. Fun is important to learning process. #formativechat
CHOICE is so important!!! Just because I think it will work doesn't mean it actually does. They know so much better than I do what works for them. Plus..ownership over learning leads to more engaged, enthusiastic learners! #formativechat
That’s a great point. My visualizations require student login (use Google Forms/Sheets) or in class using team names so they can encourage their teammates without feeling ostracized. I did make a mistake early on of putting student names and learned my lesson. #formativechat
A3: Students will want to share creating/playing games and show they’ve accomplished a challenge, and could be an engaging way to connect with families/communities and get them involved in instruction/final projects #formativechat
A3: Gamification helps Ts build collaboration skills within the classroom so that the class is more of a community of learners supporting and cheering one another on. #formativechat
With Quizlet Live everyone has a chance for most of the game. With Kahoot I have seen many students start guessing once there is no way they can get back in the top 5. #formativechat
@quizlet Live is a blast to play! Try playing it silently! Fun twist to the game! I tell my students it’s like #Quizlet and Silent Library on MTV had a baby! LOL #formativechat
+1 on earlier point (didn't catch who made it) about diff btwn gamification and game-based. Distinction is important. The #Games4Ed chat crew are a great resource to lean on for this, as is @MatthewFarber's book #formativechat
Not to mention it helps you have more experts in the room. From day one, my Ss know the smartest person in the room is the room. This means that our "techsperts" are able to help anyone! #formativechat
A2 It would be easy to say all kids love games, and therefore learn more. The fact is not every kid like games...so be careful of overusing the “gaming” aspect. #formativechat

A3: Data drives instruction. Gamifying gives teachers instant data, opportunities to scaffold, all while maintaining engagement. #goldenticketofteaching#formativechat
A3: It’s allowed me to be a lot more hands-off (after quests were created) as students were more eager to solve their own (or their teammates) challenges. It gave me time to focus with students/areas I was needed most. The best part has been student collaboration. #formativechat
A3 I can learn from Ss answers in a game what areas I need to focus more on. nothing like the sound of crickets during a fun game to let you know to review those elements #whitmanwtps#formativechat
A3: I once did a @quizizz for review and realized my students were not ready for their exam on figurative language. I had them create a project to further learn and then ran the same game again. If I hadn't played the game, my students would not have had success! #formativechat
A3: I am 4 years into my gamification journey, and it has transformed the way I teach. Started with a simple leaderboard for my weekly blog assignment and everything I do falls into our whole year experience. #formativechat
I love the idea of encouraging students to create their own games as products of their learning! I would think this would be a great learning activity to follow up with #formativechat
A3. Ts should always look for better, engaging, and creative ways to reach Ss - that doesn't necessarily mean it's always new... just better. Start with the "why", and work backwards #formativechat
A3: Seeing more and more folks excited to share their #HyperDocs. For folks looking to dip their toes in the gamification waters, that could be an easy place to synthesize something new with what you're already doing #formativechat
Also, focus on the objectives of the lesson/unit to ensure learning-the bells and whistles are nice, but if it does not reinforce content...loss of solid instructional time #formativechat
A2 It would be easy to say all kids love games, and therefore learn more. The fact is not every kid like games...so be careful of overusing the “gaming” aspect. #formativechat
When you have to click on the link that says see 50+ more tweets.. you might not be on your A game.. OR.. the chat is on fire!!! Loving #formativechat tonight!
A3: Gamification helps Ts build collaboration skills within the classroom so that the class is more of a community of learners supporting and cheering one another on. #formativechat
So nice to have diff choices with #edtech I ask Ss which they want to play on a given day, nice to mix it up and enjoy being able to play from diff locations too #formativechat
A3: I am 4 years into my gamification journey, and it has transformed the way I teach. Started with a simple leaderboard for my weekly blog assignment and everything I do falls into our whole year experience. #formativechat
A3 It allows Ts to keep a constant pulse on the class. Easier to see where Ss are at and meet them where they are. If done right, Ss will always have a chance to climb "the board." It's never game over! #formativechat
A4: When you see how motivated and focused your students are you try to bring that level of engagement?into all Instruction! If you want your Ss to forget about time this can do it! #formativechat
Ss also like the variation to @quizlet Live by remaining seated where they are in class and NOT moving or being verbal. Added creativity in communication across the rm! #formativechat
Agreed. Adding games does not mean engagement; in a #gbl environment, the game must deliver the content not just be a trivia quiz wrapped up in a "game" #formativechat
Game based learning in the classroom or gamifying can be tricky- see how @itworkedtech recommends kicking things off in their latest video: https://t.co/jKM13wRJro
A3 the more we gamify our teaching the better we get at using FA. In order to create levels, points and so on we have to understand the progressions to mastery. You also have to know where your Ss are in order to create quests and who’s on the leader board #formativechat
Great observation! I can see how it's important to reflect on gamified learning activities and make improvements! Thanks for pointing this out :) #formativechat
A3: There's something about PLAY that helps us immerse ourselves to the point that we aren't aware of learning. This can be a real sweet spot for kids, esp those under mistaken impression that they hate to learn #formativechat
When you have to click on the link that says see 50+ more tweets.. you might not be on your A game.. OR.. the chat is on fire!!! Loving #formativechat tonight!
That is a very true point. I think that is where the choice comes in. Options are good! (Especially after you know that about your student.. and you definitely SHOULD know that) #formativechat

Even just letting students talk about their favorite video games you see how excited they get! Use this info & pull at the threads to see what life lessons you can get out of their favorite game & use it in the classroom too! #formativechat
I love the look on kids' faces when they see the desks in an unexpected arrangement. Immediate attention grabber. Everyone wants to know what's going to happen next #formativechat
