Competitive gaming is making it to the mainstream! Competitions are selling out venues like Madison Square Garden and online streaming of Esports is as popular as viewing of professional athletic events. Colleges are starting to provide scholarships for competitive gaming. It is time to build the pipeline to prepare students for these opportunities while honoring their interests and valuing their skills. This chat is aimed at building a community around the growth of Esports in grades 6 though 12 which will naturally feed into the college programs. Join us for the weekly #EsportsEDU chat at 7:30 pm ET. It is a 30 minute chat that will have one question / topic each week to guide the discussion. Use the hashtag #Esportsedu or join us via participate.com at participate.com/chats/EsportsEDU

Hey all! Steve from NJ. I teach game design and development to middle school students and developing a #gamedev course for @ridge_high to start next year! Also have a great gameclub / #esports MS and HS program! #esportsedu Currently playing #starcraft2 and @nomadastudiobcn Gris
Hi everyone! Jesse, instructional tech coach with @AppoSchools - looking to grow PLN and learn to develop #esports and game based learning experiences in our schools #esportsedu
For tonight’s #esportsEDU we want to talk about the things we wish people knew about gaming & esports, as all too often we butt heads with misconceptions & misinformation. It’s good to know what information we need to get out there to the public.

In terms of misconception / stereotype I think we need to see the whole scope of who plays games and not consider a "gamer" to be a basement dweller. Everyone plays games. A passion for games is not a bad thing. #esportsedu

I would love for people to understand the social capital and affinity spaces that exist through gaming communities. Sounds like a lot of #SEL happening #esportsedu
That #esports and #gaming is for everyone, and everyone is playing/watching - higher viewership in US than most professional sports leagues #esportsedu
I wish people realized how much strategy, communication, and execution goes into success at esports. It rivals traditional sports. People just assume it's hand/eye coordination and reflexes. It's def not #esportsedu
This. So much this. Since we began with a "social" club, and encouraged ladies to play with us, our LoL team is now 50% female.
WE have to help break the stereotypes of who is, and isn't a gamer!
Hey #esportsEDU! Looking to learn and maybe start a club at my site! I coach swim. I also play @PlayOverwatch and can see so.e of the benefits of getting "gamers" engaged.

The big question I have for those who have started programs in buildings/districts is what info/lit/research did you show to gain admin support? #esportsedu

I’m a total newbie here. Is there a list of what equipment (PC, Chromebook, gaming system etc) people use in there schools. Or is there a useful website that could answer basic ?s for a newbie? #esportsedu
I speak to the college programs, breadth of the industry and the fact that scholarships are being offered. Also programs like @NASEFedu are tying it to curriculum beautifully. #esportsedu

Chromebooks not good for #Esports. System specs should be relatively high but some games that are being played competitively do not require intense specs. #esportsedu
Middle school - Rocket league - practice during game club and lunch. High school - league of legends - practice 3 days per week and have coaching provided by @ConnectedCamps#esportsedu
I'm late but I'm here! I do data science for the Reds, but I'm interested in esports and esports analytics. Mainly overwatch, blops, and speed runs #esportsedu

Do you have to get your schools to open up certain channels for games to work or do you set up some other way? I know a lot of schools keep their internet locked down pretty tight. #esportsedu

I have a group of students taking a stats analysis in sports class, and would love to incorporate #eSports analytics #sports analytics into the curriculum #esportsEDU - @nickwan@pmaymin any ideas?
Thanks for the chat #esportsedu folk :) Steve from NJ - teach game design to MS students and also HS students next year! Maybe a good future topic is recruiting student / parent support
Thank you for joining us tonight for #esportsedu we meet every week at the same time! Please take a second to remind the group a bit about yourself, follow anyone that can help in your esport journey & add any topics you’d like us to cover in the future
Your school can compete in two huge Esports for no money. All you need is a space and 3 monitors and you can play rocket league with consoles students bring in. You can also play league of legends with any 5 PCs less than 5yo. #esportsedu
I think a misconception from a data standpoint is that esports has data driven approaches "built in" just because they are virtual competitions. That's definitely not the case -- lots to explore on the data front (if you can find the data) #esportsedu

A very simple place to start would be something like @SpeedGamingShow. It's a race and there are a lot of races all the time in different formats. Ask nicely and maybe they'll send over some speed scores? #esportsedu

Thanks for the chat #esportsedu it was a quick one!
Again, I'm an ELA teacher, and esports director at our school, and I enjoy helping grow the program. Let me know if I can help!
