Here's the running order for today's #nt2t questions!
It's lunch time here in Ireland, but huge thanks to all who are joining early this morning on the other side of the pond! #digcit
Good morning/afternoon everyone! I am Julie from Missouri, USA and co-founder of #NT2t and on the planning team for #digcitsummit in St. Louis, Missouri in September!
Hannah from northern VA, so excited for today's chat! My interesting fact would probably be that I did colorguard (flag and rifle/sabre) in high school and was pretty good at it! #nt2t
A1) Digital citizenship means being mindful of how you use technology... We must teach students how to use forms of technology correctly so they can be safe and informed citizens #Nt2T
Hi I am Stephanie! I majored in English education in Korea and now I'm taking graduate school in Iowa. I'm new here! Looking forward to learning with you all today! #nt2t
OMG! Me, too! Marched fall and winter guard in HS, two seasons in college, and two years independent winter guard (Pride of Cincinnati 92 and 93). :) #nt2t
Hannah from northern VA, so excited for today's chat! My interesting fact would probably be that I did colorguard (flag and rifle/sabre) in high school and was pretty good at it! #nt2t
Wow, you were way beyond me! I wanted to do it in college but it was only for a single showcase and it conflicted with my job. :( Still have all my equipment though! #nt2t
A1. #DigCit = human connections. We view #digcit as action, something to practice everyday. In a networked world, we've responsibility to put global #edu into practice to empower others to become change makers for using #tech4good in local, global, digital communities! #nt2t
A1: Being an ACTIVE citizen in the digital world, which is much broader than the physical one. Although the definition of 'citizen' is always hard to completely nail down. #nt2t
A1. To be a digital citizen is to be responsible online. In practice like in real life, there is a lot of good and bad people. We should work together to generate a positive impact and help others #NT2t
#nt2t#sbpdchat I think it's important to note that digital citizenship is about ALL social media interactions. That ranges from twitter to Facebook to Google Classroom and how we use those forums on a daily basis.
Hello! I am Martha-I support early career Ts and professional learning in Springfield MO. A1-Be what you want to see! Use empathy, flexibility, and tact in all discourse! #nt2t
A1: Realizing that how you act and interact in real life should be the same as in digital life. But also seeing it is about what you share and how you share things as well #nt2t
A1) Digital citizenship means being mindful of how you use technology... We must teach students how to use forms of technology correctly so they can be safe and informed citizens #Nt2T
A1) Being a good citizen online and offโkind, thoughtful, lifting others up, and doing good. It looks like a chat like this, like the #digcitsummit, and like the website on altruism that my daughterโs being judged on for a history day competition later this morning! #digcit#nt2t
#NT2t A1) It means being conscious of the influence media has in developing POV, and understanding, using media lit skills to help determine and influence impact
A1. #nt2t is #digcit in practice! It promotes the importance of being critical thinkers & solution creators who make a positive impact. In doing so, #digcit is about the heart of being human, creating ripples of good, & continuously learning side by side! #bettertogether
A2) Your digital footprint follows you no matter where you go. It is important ae teach students about their digital footprints so they can be more aware #Nt2T
A1. #DigCit = human connections. We view #digcit as action, something to practice everyday. In a networked world, we've responsibility to put global #edu into practice to empower others to become change makers for using #tech4good in local, global, digital communities! #nt2t
A1. @DigCitSummitIRL aims to do good with tech in your own sphere; connecting with others doing good, so we can create a 'we' mindset. This multiple-stakeholders approach provides an opp. to address the positive ways to address #socialmedia & #tech use as a community #NT2t 1/2
A1: being responsible, respectful of yourself and others when commenting/posting. we teach it by modeling, using teachable moments, showing our kid s what it looks like to be a good citizen when using tech. #nt2t
A1. @DigCitSummitIRL is committed to changing conversations & culture around kids and technology. We unite organisations, educators, industry, parents and students by working with youth, not at them! #NT2t 2/2
A1: #digcit means being human...be kind to others, respectful, show your best side not your worst, support each other as we grow and learn together. #NT2t
Enjoying morning coffee and checkling in on #NT2t. I'm in Chicago area & use Twitter to gather & share ideas that support growth of volunteer based #tutor#mentor#learning programs in high poverty areas.
A3) We can teach students the 5 Pโs for a positive Digital Footprint! This will give students tips to use that will make them safer online.
It is so important we teach students about digital citizenship... Technology will keep getting more advanced #Nt2T
A1: digital citizenship means responsible behavior: to know what digital transformation means, to be ready to learn and adapt to new, developing circumstances #nt2t
Q2. How do your daily actions impact your #DigitalFootprint?
Share your ideas on how we can change this #digcit narrative from the negative to the positive! #nt2t
A1. This year I approached #digcit instruction differently. I wanted to empower them to see the good/ power of digital tools bc Ss have already been lectured about the dangers. I had students create their own definitions and pledges to become responsible leaders with tech. #nt2t
https://t.co/9c2m8cuBkJ
A1. For me, the meaning of having digital citizen is that having some rights and duties in on-line world. All digital citizens always should think the two things when they are living in the world of technology. #nt2t#digcit
A1 Digital citizenship means the ability to understand how to behave online. Knowing that everyone has different opinions and learning to understand that this is ok. Respect, tolerance and empathy are key areas too. #nt2t
A1. #nt2t is #digcit in practice! It promotes the importance of being critical thinkers & solution creators who make a positive impact. In doing so, #digcit is about the heart of being human, creating ripples of good, & continuously learning side by side! #bettertogether
Love this Kirsten! The world of #digcit is really redefining itself to focus on the power for good. We need to be aware of the dangers, but so much good can occur when used thoughtfully. #NT2t
A1. This year I approached #digcit instruction differently. I wanted to empower them to see the good/ power of digital tools bc Ss have already been lectured about the dangers. I had students create their own definitions and pledges to become responsible leaders with tech. #nt2t
A2) I try to set a good example - be respectful, do research before sharing information so as not to spread misinformation, treat others as I'd like to be treated. #nt2t
A2. From the moment we wake to the moment we go to sleep, everything we do online leaves a digital footprint. @shyj@sarahdateechur@mbfxc are great examples of creating positive narratives by using our footprints to create #digcit resources like this chat! #nt2t
#nt2t#sbpdchat I think it's important to note that digital citizenship is about ALL social media interactions. That ranges from twitter to Facebook to Google Classroom and how we use those forums on a daily basis.
A4) Media literacy is the process that allows us to create, critically evaluate, and acess media in a variety of forms. Personally, I feel media literacy is incorporated into each of the 4 Cs of 21st Century Learning #Nt2T
A2. Now we have the power to show the ๐all the good things we can do at the tip of our fingerprints.. why not use it? ๐๐ป๐๐ป #impact for good!! #NT2t
#nt2t#sbpdchat I think it's important to note that digital citizenship is about ALL social media interactions. That ranges from twitter to Facebook to Google Classroom and how we use those forums on a daily basis.
A1: Being an ACTIVE citizen in the digital world, which is much broader than the physical one. Although the definition of 'citizen' is always hard to completely nail down. #nt2t
#nt2t#sbpdchat A2 My sixth graders tend to get very excited about the freedom of positing on sites, even when they are school specific like Google Classroom. I spend quite a bit of time talking about how ANYONE can see what they are posting - not just their friends!
A2. We live in a world of connections, we share everything we do on social media and therefore we leave a digital footprint. But lots can be done to create a positive impact, like this chat #NT2t#digcit
Q2. How do your daily actions impact your #DigitalFootprint?
Share your ideas on how we can change this #digcit narrative from the negative to the positive! #nt2t
A1 being a digital citizen means keeping up with the change and staying current and relevant, making sure that I control the tech and not the other way around #nt2t
#NT2t A2) being constaly thoughful in what we put on line, it is easy to get caught up in a moment or feeling and post that feeling, w/out realizing the harm in the short or long run. I tend to ghost/lurk, before commenting
A2: We all "know" that everything we say digitally is being recorded somewhere, yet we choose to ignore this oftentimes. It blows my mind why we do this! We are the example for our kids; that should mean something. #NT2t
A2. Let's take all these ideas & make them a reality! You can make a positive change by running a workshop at @digcitsummitIRL! Send us an email at digcitirl@digcitinstitute.com #nt2t
A2 Agree I think one major thought shift we and others need to make is that our digital footprint is more permament and accessible than our "real life" footprint. We should be more wary and intentional #nt2t
A2 So often it is easier to turn a blind eye if you see someone being bullied online. If I jump in will that happen to me too? If we all were prepared to drown out the bad with the good it would be so much better. Don't let it go do something about it. #nt2t
A2: you're the constructor of your personal digital footprint. Be aware of your data, communicate like #irl In the digital world there are the same ppl like on a village: friends, gossipmongers, enemies. #nt2t
Digital citizenship seems synonymous with global citizenship, there are the same concerns and influences, especially because you are essentially connecting with the world. #sbpdchat#nt2t
Julie, one of the reasons Iโm listening to #nt2t this AM is the entire #CambridgeAnalytica topic. WRT #digitalcitizenship, what are we suppose to learn from this - take away from it, mold & shape both what we teach AND what we model for students?
A2: Given how much of our daily life is now digital, SO much of what I do affects it! I look at it not only in terms of the obviously public media (Twitter, FB, etc.) but private as well (Wonderlist, emails)...if I was investigated, what would they find? #nt2t
Q3. How can we teach positive #DigitalCitizenship to younger generations (& older)?
How can we turn the #digcit 'talk at them' approach to 'learn with them'? #nt2t
A3 We can teach positive digital citizenship though showing them how it is done. Talking to them about what they share and why it is important to think before you post. #nt2t
A3. Modelling & creating content together is one of the best ways to teach #digcit to our children & students. Together we can learn by reporting or challenging content we feel is inappropriate. #nt2t
A2: I think the real challenge might be to change the landscape of #digcit from focusing on the "bad" to understanding how tech can be a change for good instead. If we teach kids (and adults) to make a positive impact we could make a difference #NT2t
A3) Model, model, model. Give them opportunities to practice. Know that they will make mistakes (part of learning). Try to let them practice in controlled environs/formats early on. #nt2t
A3 Give them safe platforms to have a go with. Create Flipgrids for the class only. Let them use and learn by their mistakes in a safe environment. #nt2t
3. And I ask that because - truly - this needs to be a โtalk with themโ conversation, but also a โwalk with themโ activity.
#CambridgeAnalytica#nt2t
A2: We are currently building our district's #WO2World PLN. I am spending more time creating my #digital footprint in order to grow our community. #nt2t
A3: Include Ps for younger Ss. Many are still hesitant to even let their children know SM exists much less let them be active on it. Ss need to be intro'd to SM with "swim fins" when young so they know how to swim among the sharks later #nt2t
A3. I believe we have to create consciousness. But also we have to speak their same language. Understand what is to be a good digital citizen and what the younger generations face online #NT2t
A3) We can teach students the 5 Pโs for a positive Digital Footprint! This will give students tips to use that will make them safer online.
It is so important we teach students about digital citizenship... Technology will keep getting more advanced #Nt2T
A2) We can change the #DigitalCitizenship conversation from negative to positive by sharing what we gain from our online learning community. This is where the magic happens and you have to experience it to understand it. #digcit#nt2t
Oh yes, interesting question. Imagine what ppl in 200 years will say about our lives. Crazy to think that then someone will read through all chats, messages, lists. ๐ #nt2t
This is a warning but also a great source of excitement. Kids have a global audience like no prior generation ever had. What an opportunity to make a mark! #nt2t
#nt2t#sbpdchat A2 My sixth graders tend to get very excited about the freedom of positing on sites, even when they are school specific like Google Classroom. I spend quite a bit of time talking about how ANYONE can see what they are posting - not just their friends!
A3. Involve everyone - students, parents, teachers & #tech / #socialmedia stakeholders. We can take on the we won't do anything for you without you attitude! #nt2t
A3b: As far as moving from talking at to working with... we have to be on the platforms they are using and work through the messiness that can be their online world. #nt2t
I agree Art. Somethiing happens and we get all fired up, hold rallies, talk and talk and talk, but then when it's time for change/action to be made, we stop and move on to the next thing. It's the old "talk is cheap" thing. #NT2t
โ ๏ธ If anyone asks you why #digcit is important, just show them this ๐ the evolution of an internet minute circa 2015-2017! - an immensely powerful driver of innovation in learning
#satchat#nt2thttps://t.co/tMgRtOdh0c
If they actually survive that long. I feel really sad that there won't be old photos for them to go through in the way I have photos of my parents. Nothing is printed out which is a shame. #nt2t
A3: If we want to raise critical thinkers, we need not just model, but also help them coprehend the digital environment and the big picture there, so they can learn to make adequate decisions about it on their own and develop their #digcit skills #nt2t
I like to use Flipgrid and Padlet as they are tools that you can share as a class before you use them more widely. Let them have a go and use class discussion to talk about any mistakes. #nt2t
I really think part of the problem is that parents don't know how to use the tools their kids are using. They ask kids what they are doing online but very few really use teach WITH their kids. Educating parents is HUGE! #NT2t
A3: first of all be an example. Show how you handle your digital life. Answer students' questions about data security and give advice. Work with students.
I think the wrong way is to forbid using smartphones and social media. You only can learn by using it. #nt2t
I really think part of the problem is that parents don't know how to use the tools their kids are using. They ask kids what they are doing online but very few really use teach WITH their kids. Educating parents is HUGE! #NT2t
The great thing about your online space is it can be what you want it to be. For many of us it's primarily an educational community, but if you want an open opinion forum (I do some of that too), go for it. Just be prepared! #nt2t
https://t.co/vIUOUgToEu
A3. I think it should be helpful to talk with students about the negative cases like abusing the right as a digital citizen. Talking about the matter together, instead of giving a cliche answer about the question right away:) #nt2t
Q3. How can we teach positive #DigitalCitizenship to younger generations (& older)?
How can we turn the #digcit 'talk at them' approach to 'learn with them'? #nt2t
And you don't need to start online with these tools. Use chart paper posted on a wall and practice first. Kids can use sentence strips/stickies to practice posts. As a class, critique-ask how to make better. When ready then go online #NT2t
It is also very difficult to keep up with the shifting platforms and potential uses and mis-uses. Sometimes it seems Ps and Ts are "platform specific" in our digital citizenship thinking. This won't work long term #nt2t
So funny to me...we don't lets kids get in a car and start driving themselves to school right away...we have them practice with experienced drivers first. Why not the same with tech tools? #NT2t
I totally agree, and kids will use them even if we forbid it. We need is to show them how to be good digital citizens, be responsible of their actions #nt2t
A4. Critical media literacy means being able to analyse, assess, & evaluate media in a critical way. It's important in helping us understand the messages behind the different types of content we access & consume online & on other media platforms. #nt2t
A4. Media literacy involves the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media. Critical judgment is needed here. We must show our kids how to investigate before they share, and to use good judgment #NT2t
A4. Make informed choices around the media you use!
- Recognise different content types: advertising, editorial, opinion, & factual articles.
-Understand context & if there's a motive behind a piece of content.
-Evaluate the reliability & truthfulness of the sources. #nt2t
I'd be curious if anyone on here has a very-organized digital photo album. It's a struggle when suddenly you need a hard-copy photo of your kid for school! #nt2t
A4. Access & use media in a safe and secure way!
- Be able to search for and find reliable media and content.
- Make informed decision about where you share personal data.
- Be careful about making transactions online.
-Use tech security features to keep your info safe #nt2t
#NT2t A4) I have not begun sharing with my students media lit, yet, it was not until my 1st media lit course that I was able to grasp, theories that I personally recognized. The next steps have been to observe my students, in order to develop a plan...
Great chat so far #nt2t but must be going. Have to go help a toddler make real footprints in her search for Easter eggs at church :) Enjoy the weekend everyone.
Not that I am well organized, but Google organizes for me! Using facial recognition, I can always find pics of who I need. I use it to teach baby who people far away are! #nt2t

How we can help students & ourselves PRODUCE & CONSUME media! Producing not just consuming is part of being an active participant not just an observer #nt2t
Digital citizenship seems synonymous with global citizenship, there are the same concerns and influences, especially because you are essentially connecting with the world. #sbpdchat#nt2t
A4 I enjoyed this BBC programme about Fake News.https://t.co/X1PPaPx4Bq School librarians have loads of resources on fake news too. Just go and ask them :) #nt2t
A3: Allowing our students the chance to help us when we make a mistake or aren't sure how to do something empowers then, even our #littles. They take ownership and that gives them more confidence to take risks and have a positive experience digitally. #NT2t
A4. Create content online in a responsible way!
- Create media content through text, images, audio, video & code.
- Publish, share, compile, & curate content online.
- Engage in opps to learn online.
- Be aware of & have respect for digital rights & responsibilities. #nt2t
I feel like parents really should be connected, but what do you all think? Is it an understandable option in these digital days to want to be removed from it? Or does anyone who works with kids, parents or teachers, have a responsibility to be connected? #digcit#nt2t
I really think part of the problem is that parents don't know how to use the tools their kids are using. They ask kids what they are doing online but very few really use teach WITH their kids. Educating parents is HUGE! #NT2t
I think even if you don't work with kids you don't have a choice but to be connected, and if you DO work with kids it's even more reason! Why would you not want to be able to best prepare students for their future? #nt2t
Wise words! Love this positive attitude - "helping us to understand".
I think it's important to be aware of problems but recognize the potential which lies in digital tools, workflow and media usage. #nt2t
A4. Critical media literacy means being able to analyse, assess, & evaluate media in a critical way. It's important in helping us understand the messages behind the different types of content we access & consume online & on other media platforms. #nt2t
#NT2t A4b) That will reach my students. It has to be more than, just DON'T DO, district policy does not foster creating truly digital classrooms, because you cannot access them in the classroom.
Digital citizenship HAS to be a group effort. If there's anything that needs to break free of the teacher and parent --> student hierarchy, it's this. #digcit#nt2t
A3. Involve everyone - students, parents, teachers & #tech / #socialmedia stakeholders. We can take on the we won't do anything for you without you attitude! #nt2t
They need to have an AI that scans photos and knows what's in them, and then we can search using keywords. "That time I dropped a cookie and it made a cool shape..." #nt2t
In reply to
@Elizabethutch, @JeremyDBond, @seni_bl
I wouldn't cal it a responsibility to be "connected" per se, but a responsibility to teach your kids and help them understand the dangers and positive impacts of tech use. For me, you learn by doing so I choose to be connected. #NT2t
What type of culture is being created around technology? The enthusiast, the unintentional rockstar and the enabler. Create a culture instead of individual activities. Thanks @mimg1225#ArchitectOfLeraning#AASSA18#aelpd
So true! And #digcit is a great place to start that process...students teach the adults about the #dig part, teachers and parents give wisdom about the #cit part! #nt2t
Also, giving learners the opportunity to become the teacher by teaching the technology, and then teachers helping them think of ways to use it effectively/positively. #nt2t
I think (or at least hope) we might be closer than we think! Parents are connected BUT they need to experience the power of being a connected parent & vital component to this critical conversation! #nt2t
A4: The best resource I know is my #PLN on#twitter. If I want to know something, I just all. There are answers available in minutes - it's amazing. #nt2t
A4 My favourite resource for media literacy would be my school librarian and school library. Full of great ideas, resources and prepared to co-teach too. #nt2t
I use my flickr account and tag EVERY pic and organize in albums so I can ind things easily. But then again...I am pretty organized (some call it anal). #NT2t

Julie, your "do"list would be a good poster for the classroom or digital learning center. And the students could even add some of their own classes dead as well.#sbpdchat#NT2t
Conversation in recent #Engagemooc used phrase #lifehappens to show how difficult it is for many parents to engage on-line. We need to be mindful of how our relative affluence & location determine digital opportunity. #nt2t
A3) #DigCit learning opportunities should involve entire communities, involved in schools and not. Set up community forums to connect online. It may actually bring communities closer after a long trend of people feeling less connected to those who live around them. #nt2t
Q3. How can we teach positive #DigitalCitizenship to younger generations (& older)?
How can we turn the #digcit 'talk at them' approach to 'learn with them'? #nt2t
A5: There is such a crossover between digital and our everyday "real" lives that I think they have morphed into being one and the same. The same "rules" or guidelines apply for f2f vs digital interactions. #NT2t
A5. It shouldn't differ at all in terms of how we act & behave. However, the disembodied voice that we often see when people are gaming & interacting online, provides a haven not available in real life, meaning we may act or say things we wouldn't usually say or do. #nt2t
A5 The main difference is the wider platform. If you are a quiet person you can find a voice that is maybe not possible in the real world. However the way you behave should be no different! #nt2t
A5: The feeling of anonymity online can make us brave in negative ways, but it can also make us brave in positive ways. I know that I feel more confident to speak up and share when everyone is as equal as text on a page. #nt2t
Agree, if there is a choice between tech or person I now will choose the person, maybe their job depends on how many people they see and at least I get to ask questions instead guessing by myself #service#nt2t
A5: I do feel that misunderstandings happen much quicker with digital communication when body language/facial expression is lost. That just means that we need to give extra thought to everything we say and be as clear as possible! #nt2t
A5: Think real-world and digital citizenship are not different things. In the 21st century digital life is part of real-world life. It's an extension - you have a greater access: more globally. Imagine this chat - would not be possible 50 years ago. #nt2t
A5: it should not differ. Being a good person digitally is the same as being in the real ๐ Listen, respect each other, take time for each other, care about one another. All traits of a good person. #nt2t
Niko, thatโs 100% not the issue. Privacy settings, versus working and and helping students understand what companies collect for information & how information is used, in total, in support of ads & business #nt2t
I think the platform is there ni real life too (think protests, attending/presenting at conferences, writing an editorial piece) but these take real effort that many don't want take time for, online is quick, fast, and can be anonymous #NT2t
Good point, Stephanie. They have to become aware that their virtual persona matters just as much as their real world persona. There are consequences in both worlds. Thereโs no safe haven hiding behind an avatar. #nt2t
If social media users were truly aware of what info/data was being collected, do you think they would still sign up? How much would age play in this decisions? #NT2t
A5. Everyone digital is recorded or has the potential to be recorded. However, real-life is starting to mirror this as new forms of social media & high quality cameras in phones. Here's how real life becomes mixed with the digital! #nt2t
A4 My favourite resource for media literacy would be my school librarian and school library. Full of great ideas, resources and prepared to co-teach too. #nt2t
One thing that concerns me is, while we boldly & accurately say that kids are smart & understand more than we give them credit for, weโre unwilling to dive into topics like #digicit, thru to where it meets #CambridgeAnalytics#nt2t 1/2
A5 In physical world you are limited by your geography to who you know & interact with, as well as ideas and experiences that shape your thinking. In digital world these limits do not exist. #nt2t
I think we have a responsibly as educators to find ways to make the online world not so frightening for parents. If they have access at home (I know that is not always the case) help the students teach their parents. Great homework :) #nt2t
Have to cut out early! Thank you @DavidPollardIRL@shyj@JeremyDBond & the @DigCitSummitIRL team for a great #nt2t! Canโt wait to see the archive since I missed a lot on my phone & the hockey rink was t the ideal location either!
And I say that because itโs one thing to talk about politeness, search engines, and footprints, but itโs far more complex to string these things together to explain to young students how they integrate into what corporations are doing - and how #digicit relates
#nt2t
A5) The rules are the same, though online spaces may give more people the space to have a voice. So there are more vulnerabilities that we need to build digital citizenship skills to combat. #digcit#nt2t
Yup, and having opportunities for learning that includes parents, kids, and community members, all learning together so they can talk to each other, is vital. #NT2t

A5. With this, I've find out that the specific area of acting between the two worlds could be different but basically 'the spirit of harmony' was same. Positive approach to digital citizenship is done also in the name of love and solicitude. #nt2t#digcit
It starts with us, definitely! We have created the digital world, and we must be able and responsible to make it safe, educational and fun for young generations. #nt2t

The broader issue of #CambridgeAnalytics, no. The role of harvesting our social media & web presence ISO ads? No.
Which is why explaining how online activities - #digicit as a part of it - connect to exploitation risks, & risks to personal info, privacy, etc.
#nt2t
I want to thank @DavidPollardIRL for an amazing #nt2t chat. Great topic, interesting views, fantastic convos and learning. What a wonderful start into my holidays.
True -- I don't know why I don't think of texting or even using social media only for Facebook vacation photos as not "really" being connected. We all are in our own way. #nt2t
And is it only social media companies doing it? Bigger problem is when it is done on your operating system level like iOS and Android do it, there is no opting out, just to obfuscate #nt2t
