Hi ! Tsisana, Boise State, ESL, EdTech. I use many tech things depending on the need:)
Jackie from NJ - Middle School ELA - I like using GAFE
Hey Dennis! and yeah, productivity software doesn't always seem exciting, but productivity is good
Hello Genise, Administrator in Birmingham, Al.
come to think of it, video conferencing software like really help me to stay in touch and collaborate
Hi Tsisana! I used to be in the program at Boise :)
I was going to say was my fav productivity tool but said it's antiproductivity =)

Fav . productivity tool -simple todo list emailed to myself everyday .. :-)) ..
Q1 coming right up (and so happy to have back with us!)
Q1:What tasks do educators do regularly that non-educators don't know about?
Hi Steven! That's cool! I finished my MET last year. Awesome experience!
PreK-Adult Tech Integration Specialist, Computer Educator, Curriculum dev/coordinator FL/USA, St Lucia West Indies
I was in the EdD program!
My favorite productivity "software" ... the email I get saying I was supposed to turn in the paperwork 2 days ago ...
awesome - do you know my budbdy ?
A1. Teachers often talk on the phone/text/meet with parents outside of parent-teacher night.
A1: evaluating student projects, communication with parents, providing feedback to students, attendance, etc.
Hi Edaura here joining to connect and learn. Sara tweeting tonight :)
A1: What don't we do? Teaching is multi-faceted and we needs to be flexible throughout the day. No two days are ever alike.
Anyone attending ? We are in process of organizing an official conference sponsored meetup :)
A1 - I can go all day without going to the bathroom ... wait it was tasks I do ... not tasks I don't do. :)
Wonder if will be joining us on her journey home from
a1 maybe the amount of work Ts do when they have to be absent compared to non Ts
a1: writing recommendation letters (since I teach seniors, I do this a lot
What part of your job do you think is most surprising for non teachers?
A1 I think a lot of the tasks that teachers do that many don't know about is planning, organizing, & documenting lessons.
A1: Educators develop lesson plans to meet individual class needs, utilize grade books, call parents to keep them informed.
A1 - tasks ... I communicate with thousands of teachers as I hone my craft ... top that you non-educators.
A1. Keeping licenses current/up to date. Can you imagine seeing "expired" when attempting to run software needed?
oh yeah, lesson planning : ) and of course differentiation, adjusting and adapting, etc. so true...
that one is always forgotten about & they're so time consuming but important for the students!
hi, all, sorry I'm late. Sue from MA. Hs/ms math
Definitely include those tasks.
A1: Our brains are always "at work" - 24/7! No such thing as a day off:)
Go to meetings during prep, lunch, before school, after school, etc. while eating in record time & focusing on Ss
As a T I am always looking, in and out of the classroom for ways to bring in new and innovative ideas
totally understand that struggle is real
Welcome Sue! You don't even need a late pass here!
Also seeking out PD and joining Twitter chats on our off hours
Had to have a sub last week - that's exactly what happened!
Good answer. When I was teaching I could eat so fast. I've lost that skill since leaving the classroom.
A1 monitor the myriad verbal and nonverbal communications at go on every minute!
Better late than never. Glad you could make it
One of the interesting things about teaching is that all the 'work' has to happen during time that we are not with students
true ... anytime I meet someone interesting I always think about asking them to Skype my class.
On days I am out I create flipped lessons and post to Google Classroom https://t.co/7r5l1zjkK2
A1: Our brains are always "at work" - 24/7! No such thing as a day off:)
very true! Most often teachers take work home with them, thinking, marking...
I can always pick teachers out at a meal because we eat so,fast!!!
Resonates our concern and compassion for Ss.
What tools do you use to create flipped lessons?
Q2:What are the most time consuming tasks for educators?
Yes, but we also need to be highly adaptable & flexible & be willing to drop or change plans instantly https://t.co/9gKNmLkkiJ
One of the interesting things about teaching is that all the 'work' has to happen during time that we are not with students
Sounds like an awesome experience for your students!
Quite frankly, when I hear of Ts not taking wk home, I gasp :-)
A2: for me it seems so time consuming to evaluate student work
A2: curriculum writing and formal lesson planning is time consuming for sure
Q2: Documenting everything... parent communication, student interactions/ needs, meeting notes, follow-up on meetings
A1 documentation, RTI, new lesson plans & projects every yr to keep improving, summer PD, social work, the list goes on π
I use my old digital camera, my new phone, or screencastify, depending on what I'm doing. https://t.co/yM7HXyGBFm
What tools do you use to create flipped lessons?
A2 grading, lesson planning, and preparing for new year/ after holidays to get back into gear often requires lots of time.
If anything, it's hard to leave your head at work:) For me it is:)
agree, I've had experiences where teachers say they do that, it never worked for me :)
A2. Giving the properly filled out paperwork to administration.
A2: planning differentiated tasks & assessments b/c I do descriptive feedback
a2: reading student papers! And all the little things...look at this, schedule this, deal with broken projector, etc...
A2. Training of faculty/ especially when it involves implementing new programs, software, resources.
Grading and feedback, although I have a few time saving hacks. https://t.co/TG62cyEAs8
Q2:What are the most time consuming tasks for educators?
late to the party but I'm here :)
A1: On any given day Ts play the role of counselor, police officer, nurse, technician, judge (& more), as well as teaching!
: anecdotal notes & report cards
A2: has to be marking, it's takes so much time
how do we ensure non educators understand what educators do on a daily basis? How do we bridge the gap?
how do we ensure non educators understand what educators do on a daily basis? How do we bridge the gap?
do you use any LMS to help with documentation? is helpful for me.
please do share Mark, I'm always looking for new ideas to save time
a2: also student conferences. Just finished a round. Enjoyed them immensely but time consuming
paperwork is one of the most time consuming aspect in education!
I'm not sure we need to. I don't know what my doctor does behind the scenes.
I'm referring to the docs that require a specific format - ex: school specific forms for certain documentation
A2: Investing in learning, researching mentoring and matching professional development to advance individual needs.
Yep! Progress reports, assessment reports... super time consuming
love student conferences, they do take a lot of time but I love them
Use screen casting software for digital items to record comments, Google sheets add-on like flubaroo https://t.co/qsLZtpJDeP
please do share Mark, I'm always looking for new ideas to save time
Student conferences are worth every minute. Couldn't agree more!
Love those! https://t.co/h3osfH8vnh
I'm referring to the docs that require a specific format - ex: school specific forms for certain documentation
Q3:Do useful results come from doing the time consuming tasks (see q2)?
A3. Looks like student conferences are time consuming and worthwhile
I can easily tune out of a conversation because my brain goes on a planning mode:)
A3: evaluating student work is time consuming but opportunity for feedback loop with students is crucial to learning
Adding audio comments is a good tip though when you have the noise free environment
These I try to do the very moment so as not to accumulate and forget the feedback for the moment :-)
thanks for connecting Mark!
A3. Also, as an ESL teacher, oral assessments were time consuming but had great value
A3: not sure what good comes out of being forced into certain system of documentation if it is counter intuitive to work flow
Michelle Grezner jumping in
love this! Sharing global connections and collaborations connects others to our work.
A3: It depends on the task. It's all relevant, but streamline the process to make it less time-consuming. Tech helps w/ this.
absolutely and weaving the lines of reteaching and further planning
A3. I would say yes. Be it + or -. 4 those who get it, awesome, 4 those who don't, new ideas to get them on board
A3: they are time consuming tasks if you provide feedback that improves learning and build relationships
If anyone know any time saving hacks for writing a doctoral paper, let me know. Thanks for the brief chat, time to write.
Remember - if you do share links to resources they will be included in the transcript / curation of resources
nice to see you again - two nights in a row :)
A1: That we are constantly thinking about our students, even when we aren't at school.
A3: feedback on assessments is important especially when it's immediate and detailed
and leads to opportunity for iteration and further development by students
A3 the most time consuming task is all the dancing I have to do
A3: We invest in the tasks and the rewards for others are more learning, more confidence, trust and appreciation. Priceless.
A3 it depends-if we're spending time doing something that tech can do faster, maybe, but providing adequate feedback is a must
Cheers, are you going to any EdCamps in NJ, access or spedcamp? I should be at both, and Philly. See you there?
exactly. What good is the data if we don't utilize it.
and the choreography! nice to see you nathan!
A3: they are not time consuming tasks if you provide feedback that improves learning and build relationships
a3: conferences and reading papers are worth it, but have to pace. I like rdg papers while Ss are still writing
A3: yes! Descriptive feedback is so valuable for Ss to set goals & improve; imp for learning & teaching
use the speak button in Google Doc and then revisit for edits
A2: entering the loads of data into the database
The faster the feedback, the better. Google Docs & Google Classroom have helped me tremendously with this process.
I do plan to go to (is that what it's still being called) in collingswood
A3: Depends on the nature of task. So,not necessarily. Sometimes they have to be done because they've always had to b done
Nathan always has the best answers!
Fully agree. Descriptive specific feedback is important. Ss need more than letter grades & gold starts.
A3: even though convos w/ Ss take a long time it also provides insightful feedback into WHAT & HOW Ss think
thanks for connecting Genise, look forward to learning together.
A3 most time consuming is reading project logs but I like seeing what students are learning
Audio feedback brings nuance, can temper some more constructive criticism. Screen cast tools work great.
I think it's the sprinkler
Yes, informs us of instruction effectiveness and deficiencies.
unfortunately can't do that, our marking is done in our LMS
anything from but I whip pretty well
YES! And I reminds them of the why!
I don't have any; I'm writing my last chapter right now; will be done this weekend :) https://t.co/K7YR53eCMW
If anyone know any time saving hacks for writing a doctoral paper, let me know. Thanks for the brief chat, time to write.
A3 feedback often takes time but so necessary, but there are ways to help with providing great student feedback efficiently
totaly agree differentiating feedback can pay back big time.
And not just to look at big-picture hills and valleys. Really understand what the data tells you.
Definitely an accepting attitude. Always see the glass as half full. Come w/h an open mind Leave filled
what LMS do you use Dina?
Q4:What are strategies educators use to deal with time consuming tasks?
A4: sit down with a large cup of coffee!
A4: I've ended up using the Tasks feature in my email and linking it to my calendar. Helps me prioritize and saves my sanity.
A4: I often get bogged down by all the tasks -I tend to just start chipping away - figure as long as i am checking things off
my nay nay needs a little work
A4: pretend you enjoy them
differentiation is always time consuming and always worthwhile imo
come to EdCampPhilly on 4/2. Would love to meet up, co lead a MineCraftED session
A4: for report cards I do one subject for all students; a lot easier;
A4 make a game out of it. Duh
A4: I think that finding ways to automate tasks is very helpful.
A4: I started using to gamify my to do list
A4 going paperless helps! Using a learning management system often helps to provide a platform where all resources are there.
A4: Prioritizing is a big one for me. Evaluating for necessity. Unlearning to keep busy for the sake of being busy.
A4: chunk it and I like what to do what I refer to as
a4 certain nights are set aside for grading so I don't get too far behind nd still see my family
what's your favourite thing about it?
far more than i would like to admit - easily distracted - squirrel
A4: set small goals each day; e.g., talking to 5 Ss per day & by end of week I've talked to all of them
A4: Procrastinate until the deadline! Ha!
I read papers as students write and leave comments...I can catch probs sooner & don't have tons to read later
what is it? Sounds great.
ahh! That's a good one, just because they are time consuming I didn't necessarily think I didn't enjoy them
I always close my door & ask myself what has to be done today or tomorrow
A4: my Ss submit work through LMS; faster for feedback as I type faster than I write & less messy :)
I've also taken up bullet journaling and love it! Really keeps me on top of stuff
I know what you mean! Deadlines (at last minute) work for sure:)
- just noticed list of resources shrunk - are they still there when we archive?
So true. I love the smart people behind and that corral my Feedly bookmarks and Tweets.
winner winner chicken dinner
great strategy can be used in many situations
A4: Use productivity tools, multitask, involve others, organize to determine urgency and necessity.
lol! We've all done that at some point or another.
check out the website and app - gives you XP for dailies, to-do list items, etc :)
A4 give Ss leadership roles-kids who put papers in number order, tech leader, librarian, etc frees me up 4 important tasks
hmm, so many but I like the ability to embed different third party platforms
A4: Writing things down and making to-do lists.
great point. Very valid and true statement. Is the formative pieces that are valuable,
Too.
So important! And when ss take their roles seriously, can be huge help to the T
Hey Steve! Need to get back in my chats. Miss the energy and inspiration.
that's a really great feature!
ask I think it was one of tweets that introduced me to it
have you used that with students?
What is bullet journaling?
I love that I can embed my Twitter feed, Pinterest etc...
a4 also working through lunch
do you use the same one Shelly?
Q5:What tools help educators deal with tedious/difficult tasks (digital or analog)?
I assumed it was shooting at books :X
well-said Carrie ππ»
It is like Russian roulette with paper
we just launched our LMS, it's a free platform, would love your feedback if you can!
A5 Pandora gets me through it
love using Evernote and their check boxes feature for my to do list.
. A5 google docs/classroom help Easier to see and grade. No big piles of paper
A5: Not a tool, but don't underestimate the importance of working w/ great team. All tasks are manageable w/ support system.
it's is, I like that it has everything in one place
So much easier. For Ts and Ss.
A5 Evernote, Google Keep helps teachers stay organized with documenting features and to do lists.
would love to take a look, thanks
a5 and help with parent comm.
RT A5: Don't underestimate the importance of working w/ great team. All tasks are manageable w/ support system.
Poor paper. Always the innocent.
paper gets 5 out 6 chances to survive
A5 looking for the tools mentioned in the intro - only GAFE seems repeated
A5: quest based LMS, allows me to define quests and provide place for students to submit work and feedback loop
what an honour! Thank you.
of course productivity software like google apps, etc allow for easy collaboration
unless it's construction paper that has glitter
A5 I wonder if tools popular in start ups could help Ts and Ss? Slack, Trello, Sketch, InVision . . .
A5 are cookies considered a tech?
sounds like grading on a curve
A5: I like add ons in#GAFE like and . Plus monitoring students live in
glitter deflects anything shot at it
A5: Google Keep helps keep track of those tasks that might slip through the cracks.
goes to show us the value of OER tools!
A5: stealing from but - need to use it more!
paper deserves a chance too
I use Facebook (no more tedious e-mails!) with every class. Love the way it helps to create a community of learners.
A5 plugπ: our app just launched & it's free for teachers. We hope it helps with organizing, planning & student engagement!
A5: Gradebook, Google forms, Google sheets, Notemaster, Graphing Calculator
Heading out a little early. Thanks all!
A5 I would Wunderlist for everything.. I wUnder if I'd use it for the classroom if I was still teaching
I'm sure. I learned about and from innovative teachers.
Let's not forget for communication with students and parents!
never heard of ! Will have to check it out. Thanks for sharing!
that's awesome! Do you have a group per class?
what grades do you teach?
Q6:What tool would you invent to help educators deal with difficult/tedious tasks?
thank you Michelle! Would love to have your feedback when you do π
Use Twitter for sharing resources rather than emails
is a great rubric addon for . Ping me of you have any questions.
A6 I'd invent a tool that kept administration from meddling too much in Ts' lessons =) har har
a5: google docs comment shortcut!! And ongoing class agendas on a google doc...links to all assignments & easy to edit
I teach college level. Guess it makes it easier:)
A6: A tool that assists my workflow and then can easily be auto linked from the 'have to' tools
I teach college Ss too, we use Twitter and not Facebook. Might be good hing to try
A6: I want to see a better report card system for our boards!
A5 b/c I can chat w/parents, track behavior & post photos like a blog/newsletter in 1 place (want 2 try )
A6 a tool that allows the teachers to put everything in one place, easily accessible & user friendly for teachers & students!
a6: a way to collect and organize student comments on Docs to easier evaluate peer feedback
A6: tool that is LMS, SIS, Quest Based, etc. I know is trying to be all that
haha! That'd be a hit with many ;)
A6: A tool that would read my mind (eye tracker?) to know when I had a question abt what I was reading and would mark it.
a6 scan Ss work quickly so I can grade digital copy Paper is not dead yet.
A6: a tool that allows you to import Ss comments into a system which you can import to report cards
totaly agree! We need more integrated solutions that talk to each other. To many disparate programs for Ts to use
there's a similar feature in D2L but I do like personalized feedback
A6 a tool to streamline district, school & teacher communication w/ parents
A6 4 words: classroom observations with drones π... Jk
a6 can do some of the things we are all mentioning
have to duck out early; thanks for a great chat!
A6: We also need to provide autonomy and not dictate the tool that must be used if it disrupts teacher work flow
A6: A lot of great ideas here, who wants to start developing?
Where's ? missing you tonight!
now you're on to something - definitely the idea behind bringing these groups together !
A6. Some software that can capture and input where necessary. Click, and send :-)
the issue isn't development, it's consistent procurement -- the tools are already out there
great chat tonight..enjoy the rest of your evening
Sad I'm missing SXSWedu this year.. has great things planned!
A6 I would have students help create that tool. Take advantage of the techspertise of your students.
Outro: Name, role, location, and what you'd like to talk about next time on
agreed. We need something like SIF but that gets off the ground. Interoperability is whey is at. Gives more autonomy
so important! Has to meet the teacher and students' needs. Personalized tools leads to excellence in learning.
A6.Coding Coding Coding or maybe QR it up to the max
A6 an easier way to use google class with partner work
outro Toby admin in a galaxy far far away
Outro: Steve from NJ - I assist middle school students in learning game design - future topic: best practices in edtech collab
outro Toby admin in a galaxy far far away let's talk about ways to let Ss create
so great to make new connections and learn from everyone tonight, thank you for a great chat!
Outro: Frank Pileiro, Southern, NJ. How about school branding?
Thanks for the shot of inspiration! Carrie from Mo working in digital content. Have a great evening!
Thanks everyone for a great chat as always - so nice to have and back :)
Outro; Katya, NYC, ux research at BrainPOP, would like to talk about edtech co's that are "doing it right" and why
