Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
good morning fellow pirates! I'm Bobbie the lead learner from MA checking in from Kansas this morning (love the hour earlier!!) and I LOVE cheesecake!!! especially with some strawberries!!! #leadlap
Good morning, Kristina! We so appreciate you hosting #LeadLAP this morning. I'm Shelley Burgess, co-author of #LeadLAP and my favorite dessert is a really good carrot cake!
To me fb is short for Facebook. I was thinking “what is facebook supervision? That seems like a really cool educational concept!” Then I saw the picture. #leadLAP
Rena, elementary principal @MapleWarriors in Smithville, MO and co-host of #ShareMOEdu podcast. My favorite dessert is carrot cake, chocolate, & ice cream! #LeadLAP
YES! The very best I have ever had is at Truluck's in La Jolla. AH-MAZING! A close second was in a mom amd pop restaurant in Whittier, Alaska. I'm serious about my carrot cake! #LeadLAP
A1: I had this a month ago with my one class using @PearDeck we were doing our move on and one S said: "let's make a heart around our answer." It was amazing, we started using it as a regular piece now. #LeadLAP
A1: My most memorable leadership moment was also the most challenging. Working w staff on healing from harm inflicted by other team members through restorative practices. #LeadLAP # magic
A1: I am actually having one right now. Members of my staff are coming to me on the regular with a wide range of concerns. They want advice on how to approach complex situations. I hope I am up to the task. #LeadLAP
A1- I have a lot but I think it's having a T tell me how much it meant to her that I followed HER during an activity at our team building day! It can be the little things we do to support our team #LeadLAP
I teach at an @EDGreenRibbon in @OakHarborPS. I'm enjoying tomatoes from our school garden and pears from a tree in my front yard. Fall is full of great food. #LeadLAP
A1. Most memorable moment is seeing teachers implement instructional strategies with kids that we used in PD - even better when they show their passion and energy as people! #leadLAP
A1 this is a small moment but one that was so exciting was seeing our teachers grow their PLN and start to follow Edchats. It was a sign of growth that warmed my heart #LeadLAP
OK- I can't forget about my recent Diocese PD Day!! That was huge!
Read about it here in my 1st blog post (inspired by last week's chat!)
https://t.co/MJCPfYUWb7#LeadLAP
A1 my most memorable experience in leadership so far was being told that I’m making a difference. Until then it didn’t feel like I was doing anything. I’ve made mistakes that’s for sure. #LeadLAP
A1: The transitions this year have been so memorable! Sticky messes still appear, but we are working hard to build our success story! We transitioned from a K-2 school to a PreK-6th school w/ a combination of new staff & Ss. $5.3 million renovation this summer. WOW! #LeadLAP
A1: Most memorable is from this past Thursday. We had school during a tropical storm. I stepped up and managed to get all of the students and staff from the trailers to our main building. Then, I spent two hours loading students on buses! #leadlap
A1: I love any conversations I get to have with Ts and admin about positive experiences with one another - like @BethHouf & @burgess_shelley say, being invited to the authentic conversations is key. #LeadLAP
a1 Participating on a panel of teachers supporting Common Core math at the Fordham Institute, I got to know two of the chief writers and understand their hearts to help US students. #leadlap
A1: My most memorable leadership moment involved a student coming back to see me years later to describe how my support had impacted her life. Sometimes empathy, listening, and kind words can have more of an impact than we think. It was a good reminder to be kind.#LeadLAP
A1: It was when I truly came to understand that the smartest person in the room is the room and I didn’t have to have all the answers. The learning can’t end for the adults either and that has made me a better leader. #LeadLAP
A1: There are so many, but one that sticks it out is all of my K-2 teachers voting to extend our school day for no extra pay while our district and union were at impasse. It actually made the national news. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
Being the first Zero the Hero in a Kindergarten was THE BEST! I was stepping out of my comfort zone, and now I can’t stay away from that K class! 💙 them so much! #LeadLAP
A1. Recent best moments of PD - bringing in work force leaders and another session of former kids visiting with our staff - great reflection!! #leadLAP
A1 Our transition to "going gradeless" - not actually gradeless but having Ss self-assess & grade themselves - has been amazing. Started out with a few Ts experimenting, but this year everyone's on board & the energy is so positive! #LeadLAP
A1: Sticky - staff culture. Can't we all just get along? Sweet - Seeing a new PK playground come to life all from a drawing on a piece of scratch paper. #LeadLAP
It's those moments when a student, teacher or prin tell's me I've impacted their life, it's overwhelming. But th humorous moments r also precious. T told me of a 1st G student who said, "In the beginning of the yr I didn't like you, but now I like you better than my dog! #LeadLAP
A1: I love having students come back to me and say that they miss my classroom. Means the world to me and makes me feel like I’ve lead them to success in some way #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A1: So many, but I recall an outdoor bbq we had for the students on a beautiful fall day around Halloween. The pride I had for the learning community that day was overwhelming. #LeadLAP
A1: Last week our MS choir director shared a story about a dress rehearsal-they performed for the whole school and a spicial need student had a solo-students saw him I a different light-great example of building on strength! #LeadLAP
A1: Most memorable moment is tricky. Probably when I see another T implementing my suggested strategies. Risk taking that spreads from my room to others is always fun to see. #LeadLAP
A1: For me it is many small moments that I’ve had in my new position. Feeling the positive shift in the building, great conversations, and of course a student hug that lead to a massive group hug on the playground yesterday :) #LeadLAP
A2- Working on this now- collaboration, team work AND being able to have HONEST conversations with each other- We should be modeling what we expect from kids #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
Q2 Again: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A1: 1 of many was when @MccrearyDianne & I were Co-Teaching a fully inclusive 1st gr classroom & we hosted a PD session for fellow Ts on our program, successes, challenges, & best practice merging Spc&GenEd! I was a beginning teacher & it was my first PD where I hosted! #Leadlap
A2: I do best in a team where I am encouraged to grow and try new things and safe to experiment and recover from failure. Growth mindset plus trust. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A2: Focus, grit and being willing to get up after a fall. Ironically none of the essentials have much to do with what you know but have everything to do with what you do with what you know. #LeadLAP
A2: Trust, Respect, Commitment to each other and common goals, creativity, and laughter are the characteristics of an effective team that come to my mind. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A2. You need people “who want to be the best for the team - not best on the team” - so empathy, kid centered, kindness, positivity and future focused are all needed! #leadLAP
A2: I think it's important for a team to have different perspectives; not everyone sees or thinks the same. Moving toward the same vision and goals collectively. Resilience. A love for students. Organization. Accountability. Open-mindedness. #LeadLAP
Watching some of my sticky, messy students grow into responsible young adults is what I consider my sweetest moments. So many stories and so many great kids out there are blazing a trail in this world. #LeadLAP
A1: While leading a PD, I planned an activity on empathy for our ELs that was supposed to be 30 minutes, but the activity took an hour! By participating in this activity, my teammates and I were reminded of the need to provide adequate time for our ELs to master a task. #LeadLAP
It came at a time when they were under fierce attack. They didn't invest all those hours for "evil" standards and then to become a political football. #LeadLap
A1-The most memorable moments come each day when someone moves up and asks for advice, or every time someone trusts me enough to help with instructional strategy ideas #leadlap
A2: Having various perspectives, creating norms and holding one another to them, be aware of one another's strengths and skill sets - know your @TrueColorsIntl and those of your PLC. #leadlap
A2: I have found that most any skill one possesses is useful and that EVERYBODY has something to contribute to the vision. It is up to the leader to find that something and help the group take advantage of it. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
Mark here checking in late. I'm an elementary principal in Hopkins, MN. I'm baking my favorite dessert this morning: Sour Cream Honeycrisp Apple Pie with Streusel. #LeadLAP@APKRentz
A2: An effective team:
*Assumes Positive Intentions
*Celebrates each other instead of being jealous
*Looks for Solutions
*Each Member Pulls his/her own weight
#LeadLAP
A2: I think letting go of ego is imperative for effective collaboration and continuous improvement. It’s also important to have an open mind and be willing to ask questions! #LeadLAP
A1) My most memorable moment would have to be whenever I was pied in the face by students as part of a reading incentive/challenge program. It was my first year as principal, and it helped me set the tone for immersion and fun at school. #LeadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
Research has show that diverse teams come up with better answers and solutions than homogenous teams. I have seen this happen and the results are impressive. #LeadLAP
A2: Awesome teams are: active listeners, problem solvers, risk takers, willing to compromise, put ego aside for the better good of the whole, have fun with each other, never stop leaning together, & can agree to disagree when necessary! #Leadlap
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A2: I think there needs to be some dedication, flexibility, compassion, patience, and of course a variety of skillsets and perspectives...just to name a few. #LeadLap
Q2 Again: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A2: Hello friends, jumping in for a couple. We have a Fall Festival going on right now but I had to join #LeadLAP for am minute. -- We need everyone rowing in the same direction. That come from a culture of growth and understanding of the mission
A2. The best teams, for me, have people interested in task, one or two super interested, respect for knowledge of members, willingness to risk, and ability to laugh. #LeadLAP
A2) You have to have multiple personality/leadership styles present. If you use compass points, make sure you have representation from all groups. Add to that Trust among team members and a common, driving goal and you have a recipe for success. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
My most memorable leadership moment so far was our first day back to school. We used the Goose Chase scavenger hunt app to 'attack' the first day's staff meeting. It warmed my heart to see the collaboration and laughter. #LeadLAP
A3: I guess I'd like to hope that a tough conversation wouldn't break a relationship; because the relationship has been established to where those tough conversations could happen. #LeadLAP
A3: I'm a hugger. If we've had a rough patch, I want to hug. I realize everyone isn't a hugger, but that's my way of reconciliation.
I believe in follow-up. Whether its with a colleague or a S in your class, follow-up & have REAL talk & share ANCHORS of appreciation. #LeadLAP
Great Q. Let's begin with building trust, creating a culture that celebrates risk-taking, creativity, embracing the ideas of others, collaborating toward a focussed goal of student learning and teacher success. Accepting setbacks as part of the learning/change process. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A3: One of the best ways to mend a broken relationship after a tough convo or to bond as team is to admit when wrong. Own it. Apologize. Step up, swallow pride, and fix it with whatever is needed to repair it. Not usually what we want to do, but it works. #LeadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A2: An effective team can use data and problem solve, commit to putting Ss first, be consistent, ask for help, empower others to greatness, spread positivity, and have fun...not taking themselves too seriously. #LeadLAP
Oh I got that last year! It was an amazing feeling! We piloted an inquiry-based math program and 8/8 teachers who piloted were absolutely on fire. Then the entire middle school jumped on board. The cool thing is it wouldn't have happened without my Twitter feed! #leadlap
A1: Memorable leadership moment- when my colleagues nominated me for Teacher of the Year at our school in June after working hard to help our school become an @EDGreenRibbon recipient. Principal intro, "She sometimes has a worm sticking to her (from our vermicompost)." #LeadLAP
A3 The book Crucial Conversations was a life changer for me. Find common ground & point out that you're wroking towards the same goal before having a tough conversation really helps. #LeadLAP
Q3 Again: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
All these are great. I have seen great teams crumble simply because of jealousy. It is so much more powerful to not only celebrate each other, but also learn from each other. #LeadLAP
A2: A team must support one another and make one another stronger! Each one of us has a special skill that can contribute to a collective team of excellence! #LeadLAP
Teams must be student centered and have a strong vision. It’s important to keep the team focused on solutions and they must have a growth mindset. Negativity drains the life out of a team. #LeadLAP
Q2 Again: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A3: I think it is so important to talk about those differences and find the commonalities that are present. Sometimes it just takes more work to find them but we can all unite over them. Differences are also good! We all have different ideas/talents #LeadLAP
A3: Learn from your mistakes, see what went wrong, talk things through and move on. Sometimes the hardest thing to say is: "This didn't go like we planned, now we know better." #LeadLAP
A2: A box of mature-conversation and negotiation skills, a cup of respect for self and others, a tablespoon of shared vision, and a dash of fun put into the problem-solving oven (things get heated) will become something delectable in which everyone will want to partake. #LeadLAP
Hi! Late bc I just finished making pumpkin waffles for my girl. Love sweets but have to be grain-free. I made these pumpkin scones this week! #sketchipes@TTmomTT#LeadLAP
A3: Mending is hard. You can have 1000 positive interactions but one failed interaction can ruin it. Apology first, then work on rebuilding relationships by showing continued trust #LeadLAP
A2 a team needs a variety of perspectives and a common goal of making a difference for the students. Then we can generate diverse ideas. It never hurts to have someone who is very data minded, someone who is visionary & someone who is great organizing and implementing 😁 #LeadLAP
A3: The hard truth of this is that it will be much more difficult to mend a relationship if after a fall if one never existed prior. Failure is a time when we don’t just fall, we fall back to those that were there in the beginning. #LeadLAP
A3. You must see the issue from other perspectives and listen to their ideas. Show you value them - nonverbal May be more impactful than verbal. Tell yourself “be firm in your principles but flexible in your practices” - see if you can adjust to their needs. #leadLAP
Right? And if your team can celebrate each other, truly celebrate, then it paves the way for that learning from each other. Jealousy can be the biggest hurdle for teams. #LeadLAP
Sometimes the best PD is community building. I like when we have an opportunity to do something fun with the staff that takes some pressure off and allows us to build or mend relationships (and laugh). There are times you need to take a step back to take a step forward. #LeadLap
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A2: I am not sure if I can describe an exact combination which would create an effective team. Shared values regarding professionalism, caring, compassion and a shared vision to support students may be a good place to start IMO. #LeadLAP
A3. By reminding everyone, as @casas_jimmy has said, that Ss are the most important people entering the school bldg. Focus must always be on them, not our egos. #LeadLAP
A3 this is tough. First I hope you had a good relationship prior to the incident, then the repair will not be needed or easily repaired. You need to remain consistent and clear about what your working towards. #LeadLAP
I had hoped that too - that is where this question came from. I had strong relationships w/ staff. But after a tough convo, I was ignored for a long time. #LeadLAP
A3- oh good question- sometimes it takes time and space, a willingness to see other perspectives and then come together for a common goal. Some team spirit helps
#LeadLAP
It's critical to stay positive. How lucky are educators to be in a profession that makes a difference in the lives of students and teachers!!! When challenging issues surface (everyday!), we need to remember that the work of teachers is sacred. #LeadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
I agree. Sometimes in a particular circumstance, we think we are being student centered, but if we examine closely, we’re not. Being aware of that could resolve a lot of problems. #LeadLAP
A3: Oh this is a good one. I think setting relationships before are crucial. I’m in a new role, and when you have to have those “talks”...at the end of the day, our foundation helps cushion the after effects of the circumstance. #leadlap
A3 After hard conversations, I'd say be mindful of connecting with that person multiple times in the same week with something positive, something personal or a personal connection, how you've followed up on support, and with the intention on making them smile. #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
It is much easier to point out what's wrong. Doesn't help anyone unless we can also offer solutions. We teach Ss to be solution oriented but then sometimes fail to practice what we teach. :) #LeadLAP
Yes! One of our norms on Leadership Team is that we can only talk about things WE can change. Because a lot of times we start talking about things out of our control or building level. A lot of times if someone comes to me with a problem, I ask them for a solution. :) #LeadLAP
A3: When I consider bonding with a new team, it can be difficult at first. It takes time to build relationships. One of the best things I’ve done so far this year was a healing circle with my staff and it was amazing! #LeadLAP
A2-The right team is the one you have-By recognizing the strengths in others, cultivating curiosity, and peppering in consistent listening and feedback, everyone will excel #LeaDLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A3: Just like with kids, even when you have to be critical, you need to show them you love them and want to work with them. It's important that we are honest but show that we care #LeadLAP
A3: Don’t shy away from courageous conversations. When the struggle was real last year, @Eric_Carlin and I implemented #NotableNovember, finding positive ways to celebrate Ss, staff, and Ps. #LeadLAP
Being transparent is essential for mending relationships. The use of social contracts and revisiting norms can help refocus a troubled team but it’s tough work. #LeadLAP
Q3 Again: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A3: The magic is in restorative circles and restorative practices. It provides a structure for healing & prevention from harm. Need to create safe space for this way of being. #LeadLAP#restorativepractices@paydroh74
Q3 Again: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A3: I think we need to go back to our purpose and remember we are there to do what’s best for the kids. Find common ground and respect differences to move forward. Egos, self-serving actions, and grudges have no place here. #Leadlap
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A3) Make the effort to make sure that they know they are valued no matter what. After tough conversations (especially when me and a teacher disagree) I always follow up with a handwritten note thanking them for their hard work and passion. Disagreeing is Okay in a PLC! #LeadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
TRUTH! It is always better to act rather than react. And most things aren't meant to be personal, and even the few that die fastest when walked away from rather than internalized. #LeadLAP
A3: Hopefully we have created a culture where relationships don’t break after a tough conversation. Leaders build systems and the team critizes the system, NOT THE PERSON. We teach with our hearts, but questing for the best way should never be personal. #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A3: You have to get real with each other. Lay the problem/differences/issues out on the table. Be considerate of others feelings but stay true to your beliefs. If compromise cannot be found you may need to rethink your teams purpose or mission together. Is change needed? #Leadlap
A3: Love using the #7Habits of Highly Effective People during tough conversation: Seek First to Understand, then to be understood! It’s a great reminder DURING those difficult times, and those emotional deposits make those hard convos easier to recover from. #LeadLAP
A2 Strong communication would be number one for me. Commitment, enthusiasm, positivity and innovation are all important characteristics for an effective team. @mreruchie#leadLAP
Q2: The right combination of ingredients can make the sweetest dessert.
What combination of characteristics or skillsets make an effective team?
#LeadLAP
A4: Trust and exploration, I saw a tool several of my Ss were using a few weeks ago and I loved it and then asked if everyone would like it. The class was floored. Modeling is very key. #LeadLAP
A3: I have failed so many times that I accept it is just part of the process. The more I encounter it, the less fearful I am of it. I am honest with myself and others and attempt to mend broken relationships and bonds with loving and real face-to-face conversations. #LeadLAP
Q4 Again:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4: We model it first. You share the greatness of others so that people see that is what you want. You take risks and fail publicly and share what you learn from that. Most of all, you trust your staff and provide autonomy #LeadLAP
A4: To promote flexibility, risk-taking, & true collaboration, step 1 is to model it. Start by being flexible if you expect it from others. Take risks if you want them to take risks. Collaborate fully if you expect your team to. Once you pave the way, others will follow. #LeadLAP
A4: when you give people hands-on learning experiences where they are creating something it naturally leads to flexibility, mistakes, and learning. Giving autonomy to the learner is key. #LeadLAP
A4. Model it, give them time/support and provide safe way for them to share ideas and reflect so they learn from experience and can eventually lead! #leadLAP
A3: Admit when you are wrong, build relationships daily, find ways to help staff connect (once a month at a staff meeting will never be enough) #LeadLAP
A4: By being. By being the best version of yourself. Be open. Be flexible. Be a risk-taker. Be vulnerable. Be collaborative. Be open to growth. Be reflective. Be positive. People want their leaders to BE. #leadlap@paydroh74
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4 By focusing on building the relationships first, model risk-taking and failures, being open to Ss ideas and providing opps for Ss to collaborate, build their peer connections #leadlap
A3-What do you hold onto? What can you let go? Be straight forward and admit to a learning curve if it exists. Otherwise, always know education is complex and people will always have differing views that can co-exist! #leadlap
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A4: My principal and I encourage teachers to take risks and branch out! Regarding collaboration, we're in the process of solidifying PLCs and school-wide SMART goals for this year. We also try to empower students to advocate for themselves and their education. #LeadLAP
A3 I find it necessary to find what things each of the members have in common to start simple positive discussions that mend broken relationships. @mreruchie#leadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
Great point. We learn so much on the job. It's critical to have a foundation and the training, but we don't know if we have grit until tested. Good luck! #LeadLAP
A2: Focus, grit and being willing to get up after a fall. Ironically none of the essentials have much to do with what you know but have everything to do with what you do with what you know. #LeadLAP
A3 from the start a culture of compassion and understanding must be developed. As a leader you must express and show your staff and students that even though we have bumps in the road I will always care. Through your example show others that we never give up on people #LeadLAP
My last principal @coachsprings is amazing at this. She starts by loving the staff and kids so much that we want to do better, and then celebrates and encourages risks and new ideas while pushing us to always do better. The love, trust and vision are a powerful combo. #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4) Its all about empowerment, trust, and understanding between the all parties. Admin must empower Ts to take risks and understand they sometimes don't pan out. Ts must trust they wont be judged if it fails. Make is systemic / build it every day with small interactions! #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4: By being. By being the best version of yourself. Be open. Be flexible. Be a risk-taker. Be vulnerable. Be collaborative. Be open to growth. Be reflective. Be positive. People want their leaders to BE. #leadlap@paydroh74
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4: I think the first step is to model it. I also believe that its important to recognize and celebrate risk-taking even if it didn't get the outcome we expected. #LeadLap
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
Sandra from London. I’m new to leadership. Right now the best thing is helping teachers solve their classroom challenges and watching them find success. That’s a pretty nice feeling seeing them enjoy their teaching again ❤️ #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP
A4: Let everyone have a voice. Listen to ideas before jumping to “no” and saying all the reasons something won’t work. Turn your “no” into “yes”, “possibly” or “not yet” but don’t dismiss ideas that scare you initially. #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A4- model, model, and encourage! I want my T's to take risks and try something new. We celebrate that even when the lesson fails. Trying to restructure faculty time to build the sharing/collaboration and getting others to see risks are good! #LeadLAP
A4: Stop giving everything and everyone an “A-F” rating each time something comes around. Let something sit, simmer etc. and always remember any idea can be successful. #LeadLAP
A4: Lead by example. It's one thing to say you support Ts as they take risks, but it's another thing to actually show how you are taking risks and what you learn from it. Talk about the risk, the feelings associated, and the learning gained.#LeadLAP
Yes, my principal @mrsrandijones and the team had this norm established before I came on board and it's the most powerful norm I've ever seen. I'd love to see it on every team! It helps the convos stay focused. #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
Shame and blame are toxic, for sure. Nothing is perfect. No one is the best at everything. We are all better together. We are all here for a reason. #LeadLap
A4: What do we celebrate? What do we highlight? What do we talk loudest about? What do we collectively commit to doing? Do these align with flexibility, innovation, problem solving? #LeadLAP
I like to remind myself and others that we’re all still learning, and none of us have it all figured out! I’m still working to create a culture of risk takers. I would love some suggestions on how to create and maintain this culture! #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.

A4 We give people the trust and freedom as experts to try new things. We have a culture in our building that things don’t have to be perfect. We are willing to make adjustments at any time. We celebrate the risks teachers take and share with the staff #LeadLAP
So much to love about this. Empowerment plus supported risks can bring about amazing results and even more important personal and group growth. #LeadLAP
A4 Modeling, process, structure, follow-through. Using protocols to get the ball rolling has helped create safety. Use the existing structures (like staff & team meetings.) to establish a regular process of collaboration. Encourage & celebrate risks & flexibility #LeadLAP
A4: Give others the opportunity to lead and take risks. Reach out to others and ask for ideas or help. There are so many others waiting for an opportunity! Trust your team #LeadLAP
A2. To be an effective team you have to first build trusting relationships. Once trust has been gained, only then will individuals be vulnerable enough to share and grow with one another. You then move from a 'group' to a 'team'. #leadLAP
This is tough but allowing teams to take ownership of their work is important. When teams truly want to serve students, they need leaders to be encouragers and supporters. #LeadLAP
Q4 Again:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
Interestingly, that diversity of thought is a necessity if an organization is to survive. If we don't have a variety ideas, we won't have the necessary information to find solutions to make a difference for students and teachers. #LeadLAP
A4: Model this. Make it okay to fail by showing how you learn from your attempt(s). Model collaboration by working with other administrators and by using the Twitter to build your PLN. Celebrate attempts and collaboration, not safe/boring things. #LeadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!

Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
A5: I've used the #sparklearning method. Make a table of your key contestants of your lesson/project. Then copy it over and highlight in red what didn't work and go from there. #LeadLAP
A4: The most effective teams and leaders I have worked with are all in together - have flexibility in thinking together, support risks one another take, and collaborate frequently to assess what is working and what isn’t. We are all in! #LeadLAP
a5 It's phony to pretend that something like a new textbook or program is perfect. It is far more productive to objectively evaluate pros-cons rolling forward. #leadlap
A4 Speaking from the heart always helps encourage positive thinking. It's OK to show gratitude and spread happiness whenever you can. Celebrate the little victories in life! @mreruchie@burgess_shelley#leadLAP
Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
A5: Positive change is sustained by momentum. The best work is never really done so find a away to get your team to love the process not the product. However, back off sometimes or the team will burn out. #LeadLAP
A5: To sustain positive change, a positive culture has to be developed first. Staff to staff, staff to students, and student to student. There should also be a clear line of communication. Some people might hate reiterating things, but it's better to over-communicate! #LeadLAP
A5: To sustain positive change, calendar your priorities and celebrate successes along the way. View failures as successes "we just found one more thing that won't work" to paraphrase Edison. #LeadLAP
A5: Different types of Leadership teams that represent different areas-parent, students, staff and admin-we need to meet to continue to improve, Challenge, support and inspire. #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
We need to treat teachers as the professionals they are not as just another kid in the school. Trust them, ask questions, listen to their concerns, validate their voices. #LeadLAP
Q5 Again: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
Ask to teach a lesson that might be challenging or that Ts have struggled with. Do it in someone's classroom who wouldn't mind giving feedback to their "leader." Share the experiences from the Ts perspective. Keep the teaching practice relevant. #LeadLAP
Great Q. It certainly takes time, but begins with building trust, and the leadership setting a personal example of humility, recognizing the complexity of teaching and learning. It's hard work! #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
A4: The first step is being aware of my Ss needs and mastery. I plan and pace accordingly to help them achieve success. I communicate the importance of deadlines, but that the ultimate goal is for them to actually learn. We work together towards authentic success. #LeadLAP
A5: The more people on board moving the bus in the same direction makes it very hard for the negative Nellies to stop the momentum. The bus doesn't have to go fast, it just has to keep moving in the right direction. Develop the relationships. Move your people. #LeadLAP
A meta-response for Qs 1-4: As a leader in my classroom I love to see the aha moments! An effective team is flexible, motivated, & willing. After a tough convo you have to relay that the issue is about a practice not the person. Be real about failures! #leadlap
A5: Restorative practices creates a system and space for honesty, connection, collaboration, growth, acceptance. We must first connect as human beings before taking on the magic of positive change. We need this for our staff to truly do amazing work w students #leadlap@paydroh74
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
A5) Postive change doesn't just happen, it is intentional. Recognize progress, provide an abundance of support, critically examine indicators that change is happening, and always be ready to adjust to the next challenge. Change is hard work, but it is worth it! #LeadLAP
Q5 Again: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.

#LeadLAP - I've got to bail a bit early - getting ready to enjoy a #tlap and #LeadLAP session at #edcampwnc so Immersion is key! Great chat and will check out the rest soon!
A5: Develop a culture of growth and high expectations for both staff, students and ourselves. Remember, good is the enemy of great and moving forward and growing is the only way #LeadLaP
A5: Inspiring teacher leaders to share our passions, seeking feedback from families AND responding to it. Building and maintaining strong relationships with all those people who care for our students! #LeadLAP
A5: We need to be sure there is intentional time to celebrate everyone in the school. Positive referrals and shoutouts for Ss and staff is a way we do this. #LeadLAP
A5 This! Positive school culture is key to change. Create it & keep it nourished through regular collaboration on and articulation of common goals. #LeadLAP
A5: To sustain positive change, a positive culture has to be developed first. Staff to staff, staff to students, and student to student. There should also be a clear line of communication. Some people might hate reiterating things, but it's better to over-communicate! #LeadLAP
This just came as a response about the healing circle from one of my Ts! It is so important to bond together for success! Thanks @SGiloni for your support as we strive towards excellence as a team! YOU are awesome!! #LeadLAP
Exactly! Some assignments/tasks are put into place to be part of a process, not a summation of understanding. Some grading systems represent too many factors to represent true mastery. #LeadLAP
A5- Relationships FIRST- your community needs to trust you as you introduce any kind of change- change is hard... get them involved ground up, PD and learning together to make school best place for Kids- always #LeadLAP
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A5: My principal said this yesterday when we were talking about ways to grow leaders in our building. “Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a 100 leaders in our building”. That is one way to positive culture. #LeadLAP
Restorative Practices is a newfound passion I'm developing. Do you have any good resources? I know for it to work among students it should first be established with the adults. I've read "The Little Book of Restorative Discipline" and "Better than Carrots or Sticks" #LeadLAP
Reflection has to be continuous to sustain positive change. We can’t get too comfortable and we must be willing to adapt and shift our systems in order to meet the demands of our ever changing culture. The key is reflection. #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
In my staff update last Friday, I challenged my staff to reflect on their lessons and think about how they could create an experience for their kids. Yesterday I observed several teachers accept the challenge. The kids are the ones who benefit. #LeadLAP#tlap
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A5: Frequent examination of data & action plans for goals you have set is key to sustain what is working and make changes when needed. Don’t just scrap what may be failing right away. Look at it, can it be tweaked & supported differently to achieve the goal/s. #LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.

Q4:
The right tools can often help turn individual ingredients into something sweet!
How do you create an environment that promotes flexibility, risk-taking and true collaboration?
#LeadLAP
It's not easy. First it's important not to embarrass folks publicly. When possible the tough conversations need to be private. Second, it helps to begin on common ground: We are all here to help students & teachers succeed. Third, try to find a win/win to rebuild trust. #LeadLAP
Q3: Sometimes, no matter how much support you provide, desserts fail.
How do you mend broken relationships after tough conversations or bond a team with many differences?
#LeadLAP
A5: Give others grace! When ideas or plans don't turn out as expected don't lay blame...encourage efforts and trying again! Without this system you will remain stagnate from fear of failure! #LeadLAP
A6: This is tough! Because there's a difference between motivation and inspiration. The non-team players; I would just point them back to our vision and core values. As for the "slow adopter"... as long as I'm seeing strides... then yay lol. #LeadLAP
Continue to share what is good educational practice, model and share your own personal growth, and never settle for mediocre. As the leader, everyone is watching #LeadLAP
They have learned to advocate for their needs because they know that I will listen and be proactive. Yesterday, one of my STELs told me that she needed sentence starters for a task,so I created some for her. Self-awareness is the foundation. We can build from there.#LeadLAP#SEL
Q6 Again: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A6. Celebrate those that are “swimming in the right direction”, stay focused on the vision, bring positivity/motivation, have teacher leaders provide support- eventually those slow adapters will begin swimming or will get out of the pool. #leadLAP
A6: Ask them what can I do to help you so we can all move forward together? Sometimes just simply asking what someone needs may just be the motivation needed. #LeadLAP
A6: Delegate responsibilities to the non-team players. Get them actively involved w/jobs that directly impact the success. Everyone cares more when they feel they have a personal stake in making something successful. Nobody wants to be blamed for the failure. #LeadLAP
I recently listened to a podcast about how schools that looked at those "tough information" reports as opportunities to grow over a few years actually outperformed schools that didn't get such reports. Our perception is powerful. #LeadLAP
I try to see positives behind my admins initiatives. It's hard to think of "circles" being effective in HS math, but the day before a holiday I circled w/my Ss about why some don't ask Q's. Powerful. When admin walked in this wk our conclusions were still on the board. #leadlap
A6: It starts with empathy. Why are they resisting or adopting slowly? Assume best intentions and treat them differently if the situation calls for it. We operate on a fair doesn’t necessarily mean equal paradigm. #LeadLAP
Indeed, I prefer over-communication rather than trying to guess what someone is thinking. To build positive relationships, make positive phone calls and send positive notes -- tootles from https://t.co/v7br1PBCzQ#LeadLAP
An added part to #LeadLAP chat - I forgot to introduce myself! I'm an assistant principal in Alberta, Canada. I'm interested in moving into a Principal role. These questions are to help me learn - I am not an expert by any means! #thankyou
A5: Develop a culture of growth and high expectations for both staff, students and ourselves. Remember, good is the enemy of great and moving forward and growing is the only way #LeadLaP
A6: This is a tough question and I often struggle with this because I am usually a pretty enthusiastic and positive person. I think continuing to model and celebrating their small steps towards the goal can be useful. #LeadLap
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A6: leading by example shows the non-followers how to be. If everyone else is on board and they see the change that’s happening they will eventually change. We often put more focus on what they’re not doing when we should be showing by actions what they should be doing #LeadLAP
Restorative Practices is a newfound passion I'm developing. Do you have any good resources? I know for it to work among students it should first be established with the adults. I've read "The Little Book of Restorative Discipline" and "Better than Carrots or Sticks" #LeadLAP
A6 Engage in a conversation, find a way to connect while valuing the different perspectives, learn the why behind not joining in or what questions they might have , then think through a plan together #LeadLAP
A6 you provide support from them celebrate progress they make small steps are still steps in the right direction so thank them for it. Be compassionate and understanding that not everyone will move at the same pace and that is ok #LeadLAP
A6: Also, I think by holding up the early adopters and models, people want to be recognized for their work. Those who are slow to join, will see the results of good work and then jump in #LeadLaP
A. 4 To create an environment that promotes risk-taking we must first model it ourselves. We also need to be supportive of those willing to take risks. Finally, we need to celebrate, whether it be attempts or successes. #leadLAP
A6: By listening and supporting. Everyone needs to feel that their ideas are valued and they need to trust that you will have their back when they take risks #LeadLAP
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
Yes. And great teams creatively make new knowledge to meet the CONTEXTUAL and LOCAL needs of their own school. Knowledge from afar, may not apply. #LeadLAP
A6: This is the hardest part of making a delicious EDU dessert. That missing or wrong ingredient. Sometimes we can find what makes it click for them; that's the goal. Sometimes have to find a completely new ingredient. Can't always win people over to the change. #LeadLAP
A6) If they are slow or unresponsive the change there is a reason. Lack of understanding, trust, skills needed, or time to adapt. Ask, Listen, Seek to understand, then work to motivate, empower, and meet their needs. Given time and patience many will come around. #LeadLAP
Q6 Again: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A6- Differentiation... meet them where they are at. Pair them up to build the team player, model a lesson in their class to show the benefits, Share the success and learn from failures together... I also issue challenges and some love to take those on... celebrate wins #LeadLAP
A5:A realistically positive perspective is a good place to start. We can always find good where we look for it.Same goes for the opposite.A perspective shift and constant, humble check-ins, revisions, redemptions, and celebrations are helpful to promote positive change. #LeadLAP
a6 Just as motivating Ss is the hardest part of my job, it seems motivating Ts is the hardest part of admins jobs. I'm sure it's heartbreaking for them at times. #leadlap
I was in a situation where the holding up early adopters turned into resentment of those people...any tricks or tips to avoid that? I have MANY staff who don't want to share great things for fear of that. #LeadLAP
Keep the vision and mission visible. Those who are finding success with new strategies share their stories. This will often help the naysayers have a mind shift. The positive voices must overpower the negativity. #LeadLAP
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A6: I would hope we would model what we would want our teachers to do for the their students. The student that isn’t motivated or slow to adapt. #LeadLAP
Q7: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
A6: I like to seek input from all those involved, and I’m not afraid to make adjustments. I think constant monitoring and feedback from others are key. Also, be relentless and don’t let something rest until its working! #LeadLAP
Well everyone, I have to head out. This is the first Saturday in weeks my family and I can have a fun day and we heading out. Talk to everyone later. #LeadLAP
I am learning the power of assuming best intentions, yet is it so true. People really want to do their best. I am still learning how to tap into that desire. #LeadLAP
Find things that that non-joiners do well and also hold them up and recognize them. There is less resentment when they are also getting recognized for little positives #LeadLAP
I was in a situation where the holding up early adopters turned into resentment of those people...any tricks or tips to avoid that? I have MANY staff who don't want to share great things for fear of that. #LeadLAP
This is difficult to do without colleagues feeling disdain. What are some of your suggestions for professionally confronting behaviors that promote negativity? #LeadLAP
It has been a beautiful experience documenting this way of being and walking through life. Restorative practices isn't what you do...it's who you are. #leadlap@paydroh74
A6-Typically the person needs more support or resources if they are not motivated. Or, their is a pedagogical difference that should be acknowledged & discussed respectfully. Give support, show benefits, recognize many people learn and change at a different pace #leadlap
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
A7: As educators so many great ideas are thrown at us, but not all are best for our clientel. We're in the process of redesigning education at our school, and we're going to filter everything through our vision statement. If it doesn't align with our vision, then nope! #LeadLAP
At our site it began with our staff and finding a common ground before we implemented RP. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is a must read on during this journey. https://t.co/pwnX9m7h5w#leadLAP@YogiLouiseW
Restorative Practices is a newfound passion I'm developing. Do you have any good resources? I know for it to work among students it should first be established with the adults. I've read "The Little Book of Restorative Discipline" and "Better than Carrots or Sticks" #LeadLAP
A6 Someone once told me, keep moving in the direction of the vision, bring others on board with dialogue and collaboration, connect more often with those who make you feel prickly and nourish those relationships. Get at the source of the resistance & keep digging. #LeadLAP
A7- I bring ideas to my team- we look at what innovative ideas are out there and what will best meet OUR needs... and what can we accomplish in a school year- not taking on too much either
#LeadLAP
Yes! And now that I understand why Ss don't ask questions (they don't fully understand the importance of learning math), I can passionately address their misconceptions more effectively. #LeadLap
A6) Getting feedback from stakeholders and keep discussing the importance of growth mindset. Plus, reminding everyone we are doing what is best for kids.#LeadLAP
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
One practice for assuming best intentions that has worked for me is to reflect on a violation of norms with the question, what GOOD reason might that person have had to violate that norm? #LeadLAP
A7: Sometimes it just organically happens. Right now, I have a huge focus on SEL and ACEs because our students need so much. Sometimes, the data will give you the next big thing. #LeadLAP
A7: Must be forward thinking but also have a thorough understanding of the community and climate. What will we need? What can we sustain? Where are the jobs/colleges moving toward? What is the State moving toward? Constantly must be looking to the stars to aim there. #LeadLAP
Q7 Again: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
A6 Each of us is a powerful person. We need to recognize our impact as models to adults and children alike in our building.
Model with grace.
Model with dignity.
Model with love.
#LeadLAP
A6: Listen. Provide opportunity for connection between you and the slow movers. Just like kids...they don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Staff need to know they are seen and valued members of the team. #leadlap
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
I LOVE when this happens! When a staff member comes to me and says "I've been thinking...could we do" OR "I'm having a problem, can you help me solve it?" These are ways our whole school can benefit! #passionspreads#LeadLAP
A7: Start with what the students need. Look at data, sure, but also... ask them! Too often, we’re focused on ideas that are cool TO US, even if they might not work for our students. #leadlap
Working with the team who is the most receptive to new ideas can help with school wide changes. Get the leaders and your growing teachers excited about an idea, provide research and resources and the fire will spread. #LeadLAP
Q7: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
I want to make sure that the new “flavor” is completely understood before trying to sprinkle it in. What’s the why? How will it work in our unique situation? Who can I lean on to help #carrythebanner ?#LeadLAP
"Why has PIRATE philosophy taken over education?"
It reminds us of our why. Reminds us that we can change lives and "inspires us to bring the joy back into teaching and learning." #tlap#LeadLAP@burgessdave@burgess_shelley
I love this! Creating relationSHIPS with colleagues reminds us that we are all in the same boat. We need to be rowing in the same direction to make progress. If enough of us are rowing together, those who are off rhythm will not easily deter the boat's progress. #LeadLAP
A7 by asking staff and students what we need or what we are missing, I also look for inspiration from Edchats, books and discussions with other educators about what is going on in their buildings. We also evaluate what we are struggling in in a regular basis #LeadLAP
YES! I know that our focus can change but as @BethHouf and @burgess_shelley Say in #LeadLAP "People are less likely to tear down systems they help build" or something like that
I LOVE when this happens! When a staff member comes to me and says "I've been thinking...could we do" OR "I'm having a problem, can you help me solve it?" These are ways our whole school can benefit! #passionspreads#LeadLAP
As leaders, don’t forget that staff doesn’t know what they don’t know. Have they been trained? Given time to practice and grow? Dont judge someone’s beginning by the end goal. Coach to mastery. #leadlap
Q5: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
A8- Get connected... find a PLN, find your Tribe- there's lots of support out there, you don't have to be on an island! Read as many @dbc_inc books as you can!!! :) staring with #leadlap my new gift to all my new admin pals!
A5: Give others grace! When ideas or plans don't turn out as expected don't lay blame...encourage efforts and trying again! Without this system you will remain stagnate from fear of failure! #LeadLAP
A8. “Listen more than you talk” - so learn from those around you and your experiences, develop your core beliefs and cycles of reflection and most impactful- develop a PLN! #leadLAP
As leaders, don’t forget that staff doesn’t know what they don’t know. Have they been trained? Given time to practice and grow? Dont judge someone’s beginning by the end goal. Coach to mastery. #leadlap
Me too! Going out on a limb with our School Based Therapist (just learned that's an actual title) to move our ship to SEL since we're a TI school now. Seems like a logical step, but for many Ts, it isn't. #LeadLAP
Hey, #LeadLAP family! What goes with dessert better than a sip of something equally delicious? Please join my #OHS team on Tuesday 10/16 at 5:00(PST) as we take SIPS Together to learn about meeting “survival needs” of teachers and students. Your input is valued! #SIPSedu
A7: How to generate big ideas in education: ASK: "How can I make teacher & student lives easier and better?" I think @james_mtc is answering this question with @Climb_MtC -URL to quiz converter and IBM AI XPRIZE competitor. #leadLAP#leadupchat#edleaders#edchat#edtech#oer
Q7: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
A8: I'm a new leader myself, but advice that I've heard and would pass along from @craiggroeschel Leadership Podcast is "People would rather follow a leader who is always real, than a leader who is always right." One thing I'm learning is it's okay to not be perfect. #LeadLAP
Our school has a mission - as I'm sure all schools do! I think its great. Staff helped generate it....but after how many years do we look and say is this still relevant? Do you look every beginning of the school year? #LeadLAP
Never get too settled that you forget your purpose. Always be willing to listen to new ideas. New isn’t always better but sometimes it is. Change is inevitable so learn to adapt. And most importantly, never forget that it’s for the kids. #LeadLAP
A7by knowing students and school culture well, the next big idea comes through that dialogue with others! As principal I can help connect the dots for teachers, highlight the innovation happening in silos and build it systemically. Innovation is happening, just listen. #LeadLAP
A6 I think it's important to pay close attention to the non- team players. Sometimes we move forward all the while praising the positive. Some members may feel left behind or excluded in team making decisions. #LeadLAP
Q6: There is just something not working, it still tastes okay, but it could be better.
How do you motivate the non-team players or the slow adopters?
#LeadLAP
You are the best, Jeanette! Thanks for that kind nod. Thanks for reading, Carrie! Always grateful. Let me know what you think. Always happy to do a GHO with readers of #ThePepperEffect! #LeadLAP
A8: Don’t forget to just be human! Make mistakes. Apologize if you need to. Celebrate everyone! BE VISABLE! Listen to everyone. Find a support system. #LeadLAP
This exercise gives me all the feelings of joy! Thank you to this amazing educator for taking time to build relationships w/ and among his kids! This stuff MATTERS. They matter. It feels good to be noticed and adored. #CISDOurStory#LeadLAP
Listen, ask questions, throw your ego out the window 😉, build strong relationships with stakeholders, and ask people “how can I help?” when they’re feeling overwhelmed or defeated. #LeadLAP
Q7 Again: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
1st recognize that change is messy, the line is not linear. 2nd, change is not just about great ideas, it takes ideas AND understanding that change is a process. Beginning with...implementation is tough. 3rd, it's about people, building capacity & working together. #LeadLAP
Q5 Again: We constantly tinker with a recipe to get the sweetest desserts possible.
What systems or processes need to be developed to sustain positive change?
#LeadLAP
A8: Lean in to the emotions of your staff / colleagues without caving in to those emotions when they're counter intuitive to progress. Acknowledge then support. Always support. Pay attention to optics. #LeadLAP
A8: Listen and ask questions with the intention to learn, rather than to judge. Be open to feedback. Continuous improvement is part of what makes a leader great. #LeadLAP
A7: Leaders I respect the most don’t throw too many great ideas at their staff to juggle through. Even too many great flavors mixed together can overpower & kill a dessert! Come up with one or two we can all work hard to make successful, then on to the next! #LeadLAP
A7: By creating & facilitating the space for your staff, students & community to collaboratively agree on the next big idea. School leadership isn't about us as individuals, it's about us, the community. You've got to trust and guide your people #leadlap
Q7: Tis the season - flavours often cycle through the year for desserts.
This can be true in education too - how as a leader do you determine or generate the next big idea for your school?
#LeadLAP
A7: I get so many ”big” ideas from my friends on Twitter! I bring them to the Ts through PDs, emails, f2f meetings, coaching convos., etc and see what the consensus is! I have some wonderful coworkers who embrace new things! #LeadLAP
My A8: Be visible. Focus on Relationships of staff, students, families, community etc, AND Listen & respond. People ask questions - they need to know you're there for them! #LeadLAP
A8: Advice for future leaders - listen with an open heart, always be willing to do the hard work you ask of your followers, watch / follow @simonsinek@LizWiseman#LeadLAP
"As much fun as the weekends are, I think we need to turn our schools into a place where people say, "TGIM!" (Thank God It's Monday)!. Schools should be a place of joy - for all of us." -@JayBilly2#tlap#LeadLAP
A8. Risks, Relationships, Reflection. Take all of those into consideration when asking others to do something and when you are asked to do something. How are you using each of those to build positive results? #LeadLAP
A6: Hopefully this doesn’t ruin the surprise, but I am trying to motivate my team by letting them know how valuable and special they are! On Monday, they will receive a tumbler with a letter inviting them to join our in-person and digital SIPS Together discussions. #LeadLAP
