Hey, I'm Dave. I have taught 4th grade in Utah for ten years and will be an Innovative Learning Coach next year. I'm excited for our #VSCChat tonight on technology and vocabulary.
A1: No specific time is set with my first graders for vocab instruction. It is spread throughout the curriculum. Content vocab is introduced during discovery to see what Ss might know already. #Vscchat
A1: We spend time each day during math on vocabulary, each week we have vocabulary for reading, science vocabulary, we focus on using key vocabulary in their writing. It seems like we work on vocab all day! #VSCChat
I have been doing quite a bit more math vocabulary these last few. Really helps with Ss new to our country or who do not have the background knowledge #vscchat

A2: Vocabulary can come from all areas. I am not a fan of pre-canned vocabulary nor does our curriculum have much of it. Teaching math vocabulary is a personal favorite for me. #vscchat
I still remember when one of my teachers made me illustrate the word alliteration, and I drew a littered nation covered in the same letter. I've never forgotten it. #VSCChat
A3 I found that involving Ss in selecting their vocabulary/spelling words was a way to build in opportunities for choice and empowered Ss to take more responsibility for their own learning. #VSCChat
A3: Ss are a very important part of vocabulary selection and how curriculum and content is explored. I have a discovery wall in my classroom. My Ss can place vocabulary they might see during independent time or outside of the classroom on it and we talk about it. #vscchat
A4 I found that using @VocabularySpellingCity was the most engaging way for my Ss to review vocabulary! The beauty was that they could continue to work on the words long after any tests. This was built right into my literacy block. #vscchat
I like Ss to take ownership of ther learning. In 5th grade, many times we would read a nonfiction article during small group, then revisit during science. As we dissect the text, and discuss over a course of time, we (or as a small group) select the vocab words together. #VCSChat
A4: We have vocabulary centers during certain subjects. Ss also create vocabulary art and posters with peers and independently. Also tech tools are a great way to review. #vscchat
A5: Kid’s love games, tech, music, movement, and partnerships. My Ss also love being a part of the vocabulary by acting or drawing. Let them show what they can do using what they just learned. #vscchat

A6: Yes so many great ones but my favorites are @spellingcity & @flipgrid. Google Draw and Slides are also good for Ss creation. My littles love these! Spelling-Vocabulary City hooks everyone in with the variety of activities. #vscchat
A5: Thats the beauty with vocab! There is so much you can do with it, and providing our students with a varity of modalities is so important for retention! @SpellingCity has a variety of quick interactive activities w/ a personalized word list made especially for them. #VSCChat
A7: By using technology it can promote student independence within the classroom and outside of the classroom. My Ss use many of the programs at home for extra practice. A win for both myself, students, and parent/caregivers. #vscchat
A3: With my El. Ss I did. We had pretest that would determine some of the words but I worked to engage the students in their learning to see if there were any additional words that they felt they needed to work on. This allowed for some differentiated ins based on Ss needs.
