Q1 Hey all! My name is Kerry, taught 3rd for 10 years, 5th for one in South florida! #VSCChat
  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:12 PM EDT
#VSCChat Q1: How much time in the school day do you dedicate to teaching vocabulary?
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:13 PM EDT
A1: No specific time is set with my first graders for vocab instruction. It is spread throughout the curriculum. Content vocab is introduced during discovery to see what Ss might know already. #Vscchat
  • VCityMatt May 10 @ 8:14 PM EDT
Here is question one from Bill Krakower @wkrakower during our first #VSCChat
  • downrightdave May 10 @ 8:17 PM EDT
A1: We spend time each day during math on vocabulary, each week we have vocabulary for reading, science vocabulary, we focus on using key vocabulary in their writing. It seems like we work on vocab all day! #VSCChat

  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:20 PM EDT
#VSCChat Q2: Where do your vocabulary words come from (Textbooks, Read-alouds,etc)?
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:20 PM EDT
I have been doing quite a bit more math vocabulary these last few. Really helps with Ss new to our country or who do not have the background knowledge #vscchat

A2: Vocabulary can come from all areas. I am not a fan of pre-canned vocabulary nor does our curriculum have much of it. Teaching math vocabulary is a personal favorite for me. #vscchat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I did my PDP (A NJ thing!) on using picture books with math and it was so much fun. So many Ts using it. #vscchat

  • downrightdave May 10 @ 8:25 PM EDT
I still remember when one of my teachers made me illustrate the word alliteration, and I drew a littered nation covered in the same letter. I've never forgotten it. #VSCChat

#VSCChat Q3: Do you involve students when choosing vocabulary words? If so, how?
  • joannavrteaches May 10 @ 8:30 PM EDT
Stopping by to say hello to my friends at @SpellingCity #VSCChat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:30 PM EDT
The @gregtangmath books are all great. Another one off the top of my head is Shape Up. Also books by Elinor J Pinczes. I have many more! #Vscchat

And here is question #3 from @wkrakower during tonights #vscchat
  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:32 PM EDT
#VSCChat Q4: How do you review vocabulary throughout the week?
  • joannavrteaches May 10 @ 8:33 PM EDT
A3 I found that involving Ss in selecting their vocabulary/spelling words was a way to build in opportunities for choice and empowered Ss to take more responsibility for their own learning. #VSCChat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3: Ss are a very important part of vocabulary selection and how curriculum and content is explored. I have a discovery wall in my classroom. My Ss can place vocabulary they might see during independent time or outside of the classroom on it and we talk about it. #vscchat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:35 PM EDT
I love how you are giving them that choice and then they own the words Joanna. #vscchat

Question #4 from @wkrakower will get you thinking! Here it is from tonights #VSCChat
  • joannavrteaches May 10 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A4 I found that using @VocabularySpellingCity was the most engaging way for my Ss to review vocabulary! The beauty was that they could continue to work on the words long after any tests. This was built right into my literacy block. #vscchat
  • joannavrteaches May 10 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Powerful- yes! When the class stops to understand an unfamiliar word— add it to a list. #vscchat
    • KKeona May 10 @ 8:35 PM EDT
I like Ss to take ownership of ther learning. In 5th grade, many times we would read a nonfiction article during small group, then revisit during science. As we dissect the text, and discuss over a course of time, we (or as a small group) select the vocab words together. #VCSChat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A4: We have vocabulary centers during certain subjects. Ss also create vocabulary art and posters with peers and independently. Also tech tools are a great way to review. #vscchat
  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:40 PM EDT
#VSCChat Q5 : How do you make vocabulary instruction more interactive?
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:40 PM EDT
That continuity it never goes away thanks to @SpellingCity. #Vscchat
    In reply to @joannavrteaches, @SpellingCity
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:41 PM EDT
A5: Kid’s love games, tech, music, movement, and partnerships. My Ss also love being a part of the vocabulary by acting or drawing. Let them show what they can do using what they just learned. #vscchat
  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:43 PM EDT
It truly does make a difference with students of all levels! #VSCChat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A6: Yes so many great ones but my favorites are @spellingcity & @flipgrid. Google Draw and Slides are also good for Ss creation. My littles love these! Spelling-Vocabulary City hooks everyone in with the variety of activities. #vscchat

    #VSCChat Question number 6 from @wkrakower.
  • wkrakower - Moderator May 10 @ 8:52 PM EDT
#VSCChat Q7: What are the advantages of using technology for vocabulary instruction?
  • KKeona May 10 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A5: Thats the beauty with vocab! There is so much you can do with it, and providing our students with a varity of modalities is so important for retention! @SpellingCity has a variety of quick interactive activities w/ a personalized word list made especially for them. #VSCChat
  • rnjteach May 10 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A7: By using technology it can promote student independence within the classroom and outside of the classroom. My Ss use many of the programs at home for extra practice. A win for both myself, students, and parent/caregivers. #vscchat
  • downrightdave May 10 @ 8:53 PM EDT
A7: Especially if you are using student choice, there's no way to keep up with it all on your own without the use of technology. #VSCChat

A3: With my El. Ss I did. We had pretest that would determine some of the words but I worked to engage the students in their learning to see if there were any additional words that they felt they needed to work on. This allowed for some differentiated ins based on Ss needs.
