Welcome to ! and I are excited you're joining us. The questions for tonight's chat are her: https://t.co/iHhvAvdNs4
Please introduce yourself. Where are you joining us from? What is your role in education?
Victoria Bradshaw, art teacher, tech coach at Livingston Middle School
Lisa 5th grade T, Central Coast
Hi Everyone! Dvora from Los Angeles, Ed therapist
Karl form San Mateo, 10th grade world history
Rocky Logue 7th grade SS teacher Central Coast. and fellow MyMaps enthusiast
Scott from San Diego. Middle school tech teacher
Hello Lisa. Thanks for joining us from the Central Coast.
John from North San Diego Director of EdTech.
Mary Fran Lynch from San Jose, TOSA
Hi . I'm Angela Estrella, instructional coach , co-host, former high school teacher in San Jose.
Brian David, HS English, LA
Also good. I'm exploring a new (to me) learning inventory
Q1 coming up in a second from
Q1 What does equity look like for your learners? How do you create and advance equitable learning environments?
Hi - David, HS English teacher, Palo Alto
Kaitlin Education student at USD in South Dakota, From Ontario, CA
Hello Rocky. Central Coast representing tonight. Thanks for joining us.
Josie from Arcadia, 4th grade teacher. Getti ready for first day back from Spring break!
middle school SLP from central coast
A1: Equity is each student getting what they need. Allowing time to work with each student individually.
Thanks for joining us! Hope you find tonight useful :)
Hello Kate. Thanks for joining us.
A1 Equity means instruction designed and delivered for all learners such as Universal Design
A1 We try to have teachers differentiate learning. This is easier with tech and the choices is makes possible.
A1: I try to give my Ss choice over what they learn and how they demonstrate their learning.
Hello Josie. Hope you had a great spring break and come away from tonight's with a little inspiration for Monday.
Say more - how does tech help? (I totally agree)
I totally agree! I teach it the first month that each Ss gets what they need for learning! Helps in the long run
Love this, but some still have a hard time differentiating because they hang on to too much control
A1:Giving all Ss the same opportunities. Making sure they know I believe they can achieve greatness.Challenging them.
Karen from Coachella Valley @ SHHS, I teach math I CP and HP
Hey there ! Todd, elem principal in Corona del Mar, CA...enjoying the last night of Spring Break w you fine people!
A1: Talking to other Ts. How is this student doing so well in your class and not mine? Find out what is working other places.
A1 I try to ensure all students participate and interact through structured student interactions
Equality in learners is multiple approaches to lesson plans, and being sensitive to other cultures.
One key idea is that equity differs from equality. Respond to Ss individually. Some need more support, flexibility.
I see you on all the chats now. well, this one and
Rick Stevens from San Francisco area. Semi-retired teacher, consultant, web design, video, high school math tutor. Love
Love UDL, plus all my ss are on IEPs, so individualization is baseline
Yes! Equity =/= equality! https://t.co/ibtp9TzIXz
One key idea is that equity differs from equality. Respond to Ss individually. Some need more support, flexibility.
A1: I try and give my Ss mult. options on summative projects esp using tech. 1 ex Ss create Spoken Word videos using any platform
Well, you picked two of my favorites right there! Glad to see you here! https://t.co/1ETBuYgvdR
I see you on all the chats now. well, this one and
It's the same District that's affiliated with Stanford.
So true, but as teachers try differentiating with tech and find success, the practice grows https://t.co/Zx5prbcRoj
Love this, but some still have a hard time differentiating because they hang on to too much control
Lots of Ts say grading very different Ss products is hard. How do you manage this?
Kaitlin Morgan, joining a little late. I'm a history teacher up near Fresno
A1 Allowing Ss's to take leadership in their learning. All Ss's should have a say in voicing how they learn best.
yes. As you are well aware, the first step is the hardest.
A1: Equity for students means equal opportunity coupled with differentiation.
😮That's where I was hired.
A1: For me, equity is ensuring that every student has the time and support necessary to be proficient at a skill or concept
. is semi-retired a thing? Are you moving towards full retirement? Sounds like you’re pretty busy.
Hi Brian. Can you share process/examples for spoken word videos? Interested in learning more. Thanks!
really hard to accomplish in current climate of ed here in US
that is a great way of saying that. better than the usual self advocate. It sounds more collaborative.
imo, if you're grading content and learning, product shouldn't matter. Too many rubrics are product specific
A1 One size fits all has never been a good idea. Ts tried to give Ss with IEPs and GATE differentiated lessons but it was hard
A1: Equity provides all the Ss an opportunity to have ownership of their learning. An environment that respects learning
A1 Love this image for equity. 4 me, its all S having the same goal, but the support/structure may differ https://t.co/ONmb4JEivc
It is hard, but it is not impossible...it starts when educators stop seeing students as "my kids" or "your kids"
A1) Equity = Differentiation
A1: Part of being equitable is giving all Ss a clean slate every day regardless of past... unconditional positive regard!
A1 Giving Ss choice in how to learn and demonstrate learning is so much easier with tech
Agree completely! Always curious to see how others manage :)
Reality is that I get to choose what I want to do without worrying too much about paycheck. I need to keep my mind busy
Good point! It’s important to be clear about what you’re really assessing, what students really need. https://t.co/Uwe6K2V8QD
imo, if you're grading content and learning, product shouldn't matter. Too many rubrics are product specific
A1 Equity: the unequal treatment of unequals.
great Image! It will help explain to parents! Esp those that believe in equality and not equity.
-----
Q2 How do you engage learners in deeper learning experiences? Please share projects or tasks!
-----
Kristen here in San Francisco!
Yes! Ss reply well to this, they appreciate their Ts more and it motivates them to push beyond the boundaries.
I teach them math through global education projects. Such as micro finance and min wage. Check it out.. https://t.co/VTo9KQgTBg
A2: I've completely changed how my class reads novels. I use more annotations and close reading passages with text dependent q's.
so true! I'm always having to diversify my support/structure for various backgrounds to facilitate more success
A1:equity >opportunity,it's taking that chance to succeed or fail.Ss need Ts will support them not matter the outcome.
When Ss collaborate the work they present is beyond amazing!!!
A1: After many years I still struggle with true equity for all learners. Someone loses. Someone is always left behind.
Indeed, tech can be a lever for providing choice. Any project examples that stand out as ways to provide Ss with choice?
A2: Make it purposeful and make it personal. Genius Hour/Passion projects/20% time...call it what you want...it gets kids excited
I put kids in charge of their own journey through
A2: Deeper learning always involves some aspect of choice + critical thinking. Most fun unit involved local Suisun Marsh.
A2: For example, Ss create comic book strips on iPad to explain Ch. 7 from another character's perspective in The Great Gatsby.
A2 engage through student interests and passions.
A2: make it personal. Students love when the topic is something about them.
A1 I'd add that equity in the therapy room also depends on me interrogating my own preconceptions
A2: so many good answers already, not sure I could add.
That moment when an Oreo piece falls into the milk + is irretrievable.
A2: When Ss question & construct arguments, it creates a new learning experience for them. Constructive convos = greatness
A2 = choices. Getting input from the Ss is vey valuable. Being flexible.
Example projects your Ss do that lead to deeper learning? :)
a2 Let Ss create and analyze their own learning. Amazing what they learn without them knowing!
Coding/programming is great for Ss to express themselves at their own level and a bit beyond
A2 I let my Ss pick their projects
A2 Ss are breaking history & rewriting it right now https://t.co/U8AI2KUtp4 LOTS of good thinking. (Project orig by )
A2: https://t.co/PfzmeZSh7i I try to give learners a takeaway. One they can pass to others to deepen their knowledge.
Intriguing! Do your preconceptions give you canned answers? Or are they novel responses?
estrella We have been helping teachers design lessons using hyperdocs. Students seem to enjoy the independence and choices
A2: my students are teachers in PD. I make sure teachers leave with at least 1 lesson to use.
Authentic audience! 8th graders take their narratives and publish in for a 3rd grade audience
A2:digital portfolios, public art projects and sharing their art via Google Docs/Sites
A2: After studying Medieval Europe, Ss are tasked with creating a tabletop game to market on KickStarter.
A2b: Two great resources: : Inquiry and Innovation in the Classroom and and Genius Hour Guidebook
PBL makes learning authentic and leads to confidence and self efficacy.
A2:
Differentiated ScienceFair Projects:
1️⃣Bubbles
2️⃣Volcanoes
3️⃣🐜hill Observations
ABSOLUTELY! Makes the best PD when teachers get to follow their own ed passions!
A2: Stats project: Ss develop their own questions, collect data, graph it, analyze it, interpret, & display it.
. one favorite: Ss survey teen attitudes nationwide to determine how well Ray Bradbury predicted future in Fahrenheit 451.
do you mean countertransference?
My advanced art Ss use my class as their own art studio space, they come and CREATE,their choice, their timeline
Thinking along the lines of what Ss need. Avoiding this kid has x, so they can do y. Letting them surprise me. .
A2: I try to consciously teach less and make them work more.
A2: we went deeper into our learning about the planet Mars because students are interested. Lrned pros/cons of exploration
Wow, what a great way to share S work with a larger audience. Do you have links to any KickStarter campaigns?
A2: I used . Ss use it for read alouds and reading comprehension in 2nd grade. Ss get to see the class responses as well.
Q3 How do you differentiate with your learners to allow more of them to learn deeply?
Love the 'wow, you're super interested - we've definitely got another week to spend on this' events!
A2: Currently working on a cross-grade level Argumentative writing/revising. 8th grade write and 11th grade AP class revises
By the way, I'm Evin from Seattle at a PBL-school. I teach 9th Grade ELA and SS.
Oops! (therapy being speech therapy! as opposed to classroom. this was unclear)
A2: Engage them in hands on experiences! Keep them active and let them take charge of their learning
A3: choice is so powerful, it generates buy-in and is individualized
. They are working on them right now. Will let you know! We partnered with a local board game store for help.
A3: We do push-in, pull-out, or whole-grade level RtI to ensure we are getting to kids at all ends of spectrum!
A3 as an ed therapist, I'm investing a lot of my time designing opportunities for each individual student
A3 has allowed me 2 better differentiate for Ss. I have a general path to follow, but S can work slower/faster based on needs
Leila here Deputy Sup EUSD a bit late
A3a) During ELA (esp Testing) I differentiate questions asked. During Testing, Ss responses determine the depth of ?s asked.
Q3: I allow a wide berth and a lot of practice time. This requires letting go of being in charge though....& a bit of chaos.
very cool, Kristen! Check out .
A3: I try and teach a lesson several different ways and post all Prezi's online for all students to see.
so many kinds of therapy :)
I love Even the littlest learners can figure out how to use it.
A3: I video my lessons with my doc/handheld cameras, upload them to GoogleClassroom, Ss review/rewatch and ask questions.
A3: Get students to clarify the essential question; define task; then scaffold content. Encourage their own voice
A3: I allow a wide berth and a lot of practice time. This requires letting go of being in charge though....& a bit of chaos.
A3b) I'm like a human💻computer at times.😬🍎 Ppl actually said that to me when I was little. 😬🍎
Awesome. Built in time for revision is so important. Even better to provide opportunities for peer revision
A3: at our newest school students choose short term courses called Elements. Teachers pitch ideas and Ss choose
Beings hand-off is so difficult but so worthwhile. I love giving Ss freedom to go as deep/far as they think necessary
A3:Sometimes Ss help video my lessons, one video showed my students how to reach proper consistency in mixing papier mache paste.
Yes, lots of time to experiment, make mistakes, think deeply. I think chaos goes with true inquiry
And using each other to solve problems that arise...the whole "smartest person in the room is the room!" https://t.co/kZIU90FSSi
A3: I allow a wide berth and a lot of practice time. This requires letting go of being in charge though....& a bit of chaos.
what kind of school do you work in?
A2: Have Ss create/use engineering process w/no cookie cutter directions for labs & activities (4Cs)
I hear you. I like to think of it as organized chaos. :) Creating time for practice is so important
Only in CA. (Studied Sociology) Alsoi📝a PictureBook: PeterCashmore: Entreprenuer
A3:We also have Ts using a flipped model which allows both scaffolding and differentiation to occur
A3: Allow learners to have choice in what and how they learn to meet desired outcomes.
A3: Have your Ss group and pair up, they can learn a lot from each other. All Ss can learn better if they are teaching one another
Great idea. I love using video for both teacher and student-led modeling
A4: I post my own writing samples on the prompt they use. I update my own iBook many times and post it throughout writing projects
Evening all! I hope everyone had a lovely weekend!
A3 Implementing tech w/lessons, answering questions w/questions to keep them thinking, & connecting concepts w/new ones.
-----
Q4 How do you model your own deeper learning for your learners? What do you share?
-----
exactly! Ss won't know what hit them and then they start to think on their own!!
A3 Inquiry-based lessons allows all students to eventually get to where you want them to be
I don't like to be taped so my Ss make the videos for me and to see them get involved with the materials is great!
good practice, to work in groups, but easy for some and hard for others (introverts prefer to work alone)
A4: I post my own writing samples on the prompt they use. I update my own iBook many times and post it throughout writing projects
I work at Minarets. Its a school that's 1:1 w/ macs and iPads. Part public & part charter
I have to run!
Will try to catch the end of 👋🏼
A4: I find that’s the easy part! I try not to overdo it. As a writer, I can relate to and share writing challenges and solutions …
A4: Blogging has helped me deepen my own learning. Sharing & connecting with an authentic audience makes all the difference
A4 join Ss to share ideas, prototypes, experiments, failures
A4 life! Life has a plethora of deep learning examples
a4: I share and do a Genius Hour project with our students...I especially share my failed first attempts!
A4 I share with them my obsessions & model how to get the info that I need. Some Ss have created projs to help w my interests.
A4 Share what I'm reading. How I taught something different a year or two ago. Share the inner dialogue :)
A4 writing samples, think alouds, sharing life's stories of failures and successes.
A4 cont.: As a reader, I model curiosity & critical thinking, ways of questioning the author, following new info where it leads
Self deprecation and humor goes a long way with kids https://t.co/Vy9TgFl4WZ
a4: I share and do a Genius Hour project with our students...I especially share my failed first attempts!
at times it's simply my voice and hands since I demo art, w/ Google Classroom, your audience is limited to your Ss
A4 Try to model curiosity. we wonder about everything, and look up many things. https://t.co/IzqKWdUQGl
-----
Q4 How do you model your own deeper learning for your learners? What do you share?
-----
Would love to hear more about your school's PBL journey. At what grade/which subject are Ss first introduced to PBL?
A4: Modeling my own challenges/obstacles as I create products along with the Ss
A4: I practice some of my short speeches for my classes. I let them know I'm nervous to speak in front of the faculty!
That too. Modeling meta-cognition is helpful for Ss to see, also sets them at ease at times re: coursework https://t.co/qx9sQffsWL
A4 Share what I'm reading. How I taught something different a year or two ago. Share the inner dialogue :)
A4: Sharing your own experiences and your thought process helps Ss relate to you and understand your teachings better
A4 When I learn from Ss I make sure to give them credit for it. I make it the highlight of the day. All Ss will hear about it.
A4: I've shared my blog (which is mostly about the kids). Then they all started their own on . I sit with them and write.
Great idea! Another thing I do is have students teach part of a lesson and play it back to the class
Yes! Blogging is a great way to share your learning and connect with others.
missmorgan810 wonderful to hear that there is a public school that is living in the 21st century!
And I use it with Adults all the time! I hope my Ts know I don’t have the answers just questions. https://t.co/EfRlTVa89O
Self deprecation and humor goes a long way with kids https://t.co/Vy9TgFl4WZ
a4: I share and do a Genius Hour project with our students...I especially share my failed first attempts!
A4. I try to share my successes and my failures at trying new ideas.
A4: I model deeper learning by learning with Ss, allowing them to know I don't have all the answers, asking Ss to guide lessons
A4: Always share my books: Currently, The Homework Myth - they loved excerpts about how homework sucks!
Exactly! If you can't laugh at your own mistakes...how can you expect your students to?
A4: It is sooooo important for educators to engage in meta cognition out loud! Kids must hear our internal thoughts and struggles
A4: I model learning & failure w/ Ss daily. Typically when tech fails. My Ss are also now on Twitter so many see my blogs & tweets
Q5 How does innovation tie in to deeper learning? How is technology a lever for this?
A4: Share your learning. I shared my journey of skiing in Tahoe with Ss. The bruises and my quest to get better.
A4: I participant listen (restate what stu says); & I do "think aloud." With math I also use key concept vocabulary
A4: I let Ss know I make mistakes. I'm open to their feedback and we grow together.Ss know I learn from them too
being a sp ed teacher is so freeing, it gives freedom to share mistakes with Ss who understand and relate
Hello Maria. Thanks for joining us tonight!
Very important to have Ss see your real stuggles.
A5: I always find out my objectives are. Some tech does goes deeper, while others don't. Have to be a student myself and try!
A4: tech allows Ss/Ts untapped potential for creativity. It accommodates every learning style seamlessly. We're living innovation.
Think aloud has to be in my top 5 teacher moves.
and I like to do it on the fly! Flexibility within a lesson
A5 Innovation requires deeper thinking/creativity. One can't just repeat what one's heard or learned before.
A5: When I'm innovating, I'm nervous. When I'm nervous, I'm alive. When I'm alive, the kids are, too. It's exciting for all.
A5: has given Ss more opportunities to innovate & learn beyond wha tis provided to them , esp for disadvantaged.
Yes! And sharing your process with your sts--so valuable! https://t.co/6i4gcyYlT8
A4: Blogging has helped me deepen my own learning. Sharing & connecting with an authentic audience makes all the difference
A5 Innovation can be scary. Not necessarily doing something NO 1 has ever done b4 - just doing something you or Ss haven't done b4
A5:Technology when used as a creation tool can promote deeper learning when used only to consume info not so much IMHO
Great for picking apart a primary source in history!
Calling on the world's 's for help with this poll https://t.co/qUKMGPSE4o
What would help teachers and schools to fully integrate STEM into the curriculum?
A5. Good teaching is not always tied to technology. Yet, willingness to try new ideas is a key component of effective teaching.
Amen! Creating an environment where it is ok to try something new & not be afraid of failing is key too! https://t.co/7CJPtWd00V
A5 Innovation can be scary. Not necessarily doing something NO 1 has ever done b4 - just doing something you or Ss haven't done b4
A5: tech doesn’t necessarily ensure quality, but there’s value in having tools to create in many forms and share widely
I fear the Ts who ask, “Is there an app that can teach X?” My CONSUMPTION alarm goes off! Tech is a tool https://t.co/4gdjuJVe0Z
A5:Technology when used as a creation tool can promote deeper learning when used only to consume info not so much IMHO
How do you help set that tone of failure is okay? Norms around that are powerful!
A5:Tech has the power to make us non-innovators bc information is so accessible. To innovate you must be able to think critically.
A5: Innovation requires risk of failure and re-evaluating which always makes you think deeper.
A5: Innovation is based on true inquiry, choice, permission to explore. provides great tools for sharing
A5 innovation is about possibility, flexibility, opportunity, creativity, tech might provide access
A5: I never liked drawing things in school, but would have thrived using digital tools and media for visual purposes.
A5: Innovation involves creativity and originality. Our Ss need to be open to the uncomfortable space of the unknown
agreed! It isn't about the tech, but about the learning. But the right tool for the job=super helpful!
A5: Being creative& thinking in a different way helps Ss retain information & tech is introducing new ways of thinking&interacting
tech is a leveling ground that provides access

Q6 What does deeper learning look like for you as a professional learner? Where do you go for this?
-----
have you tried sketchnotes?
A5: in gr. 10 my English teacher had us do audio scenes from Romeo&Juliet. I loved working w/ friend who had good recording skills
Vital to celebrate progress more than success. A start is to share your own struggles & encourage Ss when obstacles arise
A5: DAMN! I want to go innovate! is pumpin me up for Monday.
A6: Attending conferences such as CUE and always pushing myself to be better. Surround myself with ppl who inspire such as Twitter
A6: Being coached. Teachers in my class being apart of my reflection
A6 freedom to learn and connect using multi levels, extra time and resources, including humans
Agree though I always loved drawing. I see students soak up and thrive with modern digital tools. Total instrinsic reward
A6: I learn in non-traditional EDU places. Conferences are not for me. events are my biggest PLN!
Great Q! Start at the beginning of the yr & the "idea of risk" becomes the norm after resistance by Ss
A5: now Ss can do better work using podcast software, GarageBand, sky’s the limit! Though, analog recording tricks were fun too!
Totally! Do you ask your Ts for the risks they are taking to know - and support - them? Or wait for them to share w/u?
agree! coaching is so powerful when the coach is a good fit
A6 To deepen my learning involves self reflection to explore where there is room for growth
Yes! Great to hear you have an opportunity to be coached.
. do you mean having students use that technique? Or are you referring to something more specific?
A6: Shadowing students, reflective questions with staff, chats professional reading and personal synthesis of all kinds of data
A6: Need time to process and create, not just hear. Conversations are key!
A6 conversations with smart, interesting people in person at conferences or online (like here). Reading, stretching to know more
A6: co-teaching with colleagues! There is a wealth of knowledge in our schools - no need for outsiders!Learning from my fellow Ts!
A6 I deepen my learning every time I engage in a Twitter chat- it broadens my horizon and enlarges my awesome PLN
A6: Twitter has been my my main PLN. Attending conferences such as and .
Forgot to mention reading - books have been hugely helpful for deeper learning for me!
A6: Coursera MOOC's too are self paced and rich in info.
I do ask...esp. when giving freedom of PD...frequent check-in & celebrating progress (esp. w Ts resistant to change!)
In the hs we see too many Ss throw in the towel once the a few poor grades are in the gradebook. https://t.co/fR3LBYO6yV
Vital to celebrate progress more than success. A start is to share your own struggles & encourage Ss when obstacles arise
Dig it - esp when tied w/ freedom with PD time. Thanks!
A6 I deepen my learning the SAME WAY my Ss do- through collaboration & discussion
A6: Deeper learning is watching your peers and your Ss&learning from them. You look for other to help deepen your learning
A6: I like going to things like w/ a couple topics I'd like to discuss. Create space for conversations I want to have.
A6: I love conferences as well. Nothing like f2f with a group of on fire educators
A6: in recent blog post, I raised issue of lack of deeper learning (not using that term) for teachers: https://t.co/0gdjFzlpJM
Itotally agree! There is something about observing others, being observed, teaching together https://t.co/OQbXcYTB0F
A6: co-teaching with colleagues! There is a wealth of knowledge in our schools - no need for outsiders!Learning from my fellow Ts!
A6: Conferences, my amazing tech ed team
Yes, we need more spaces for conversations like the one we are having tonight .
A6: I feel constantly on the verge of deeper learning. I know what I want to do, but many competing priorities slow me down.
A6 look for Greatness by going on Glory Walks down the hallway from your class- colleagues can be a great source of inspiration
A6: I see myself branching out! Conferences, more , finding like minded teachers, here on twitter!
Q7 How will you help your Ss connect what they are learning now w/their own experiences? How will you help Ss see connections?
Looking forward to my first in a couple weeks.
yea! There's memopad on the iPad, both Ts and Ss can explore
I have to say equity is one of my FAV topics. Great Q's tonight on learning, equity, innovation.
A6: Twitter chats like & expose me to new, real time thinking. Essential. Also subscribe to experts
A7: speaking of students… spring break ends tomorrow. Gotta get ready. Great - glad to find some new ppl to follow. Grow that PLN!
A7: relevant-real-meaningful. Based on relationships. Simple-data driven-process.
Sadly, can be the same for Ts! Something new isn't working right from the get-go, more apt to revert back! https://t.co/QHJ8qo39Qw
We have to nurture our freshmen. Vital year and crappy grades drag them down for years. They need us.
A6 The BEST way to deepen your learning is to be fearless & vulnerable reach out and ASK for help & clarification!!!
April 30 in Palo Alto. So much in April.
Innovation is my favorite new specialty!
Agreed! We must identify all Ss' strengths, interests, and values, along with https://t.co/QNXTvpY6ak
We have to nurture our freshmen. Vital year and crappy grades drag them down for years. They need us.
Thanks I almost missed out. I've set a personal goal to participate in a minimum of 3 a month
A7:If you allow Ss choice they will automatically connect.
Thank you for tonight. Good topic shared with interesting people
