No costume for me today either. We celebrate character dress up day instead of halloween as many parents don't agree with halloween. Character dress up day is always on a Friday since it's a half day & costumes get pretty hot & uncomfortable! #bfc530

Today my entire school will trick-or-treat down the main strip of our little village and stop at each storefront. Such a wonderful way to involve the community and they love seeing all the costumes #bfc530
No costume today other than Grateful English Teacher (invited to accompany over forty G&T students to NYC as a part of their history studies). This morning sees us off to the United Nations. KING KONG on Broadway tonight! This trip has been a treat! #bfc530

At our middle school kids are not allowed to dress up. Red Ribbon Week used to fill that role of allowing kids to dress up, but we havent done that in a few years either #bfc530

As a child who grew up as a Jehovah's Witness in a public school, I can tell you first-hand what holidays feel like when they eclipse the otherwise normal school day/routine. I don't ignore these days, but I am cognizant of what they mean for some. #bfc530

Today we are all dressing up as one particular teacher on staff. That staff member does not know its them. Can't wait!

Some staff themes from past years:
I used to tell kids there was a poisonous gas being spread over certain candies & all their luck they had a teacher who was a certified checker to make sure it was safe to eat. All they needed to do was bring a piece or 2 for me to clear it as safe. #bfc530
My two are in middle school. They want to keep it tone down so parade is during the kids Gym classes. One for each grade 6 - 8. No props or masks allowed during day only at parade.

Our local high school kids also go out at the end of the night, Kathleen, but oftentimes sans costume and with the intent of hoovering up as much leftover candy as possible! #bfc530

In fact, I once had a teacher who took me out to the hall to tell me if I couldn't make a Christmas tree like the other kids, I shouldn't be going to a public school. I was in the second grade. I was eight. Ask me again why I don't over-decorate for Holidays in #Room407. #BFC530

We don't celebrate religious holidays for that reason. Too easy to make a student feel left out. Ss complain that we don't have Christmas trees, but when we explain why, they're very understanding. I think it helps them develop empathy. #bfc530

It's probably one of those early, early introductions to the idea of "Not everyone ______, some ________." And, so long as one is not posed as the norm and the other divergent (or even deviant), it's solid. I never told my parent's about Mrs. Lane's consultation. Afraid. #BFC530
Yes. The room where only Christmas lights illuminate the room from early December would have been most oppressive to me. As a child, I couldn't wait for January to bring back the normal. Well, until February, at least. #BFC530
When my daughter was in MS she couldn't wear costumes. Thankfully, they changed the rule now that my son is there. He LOVES Halloween. This year he's a vending machine. #bfc530

I've always wanted to know too. I was easy to hurt? As a child of low-income parents, I was a very quiet, non-assuming, compliant child. The weight of hell (and a belt) can be very heavy. I'd be punished severely for the thought of participating in a party of any kind. #BFC530
She must have made you feel so lonely and isolated. I constantly rethink the messages I may be sending. I never want to unwittingly make a child feel that way, but I know that if I'm not mindful, I can do it without meaning to.

My (our-other JWs) normal during the 70s was to sit in the hallway during a birthday party/treats or a holiday celebration. If we look at a typical classroom calendar, I was in the hallway at least twice a month. All year. Sitting quietly. Looking straight ahead. Waiting. #BFC530
This would make a powerful blog post. We all need reminders of how kids feel in these situations. We can be incredibly cruel without meaning to be. #bfc530
It involves soldering, stings of LED lights, 3D printed parts... and lots of hot glue. He puts tons of work into his costumes, so he's happy to be able to wear them to school and show his friends and teachers. #bfc530

Occasional distractions, especially when culturally relevant, can have a big impact on building a safe culture & environment. When kids feel safe, their learning increases. IMO #bfc530
We don’t celebrate Halloween. It goes against our religious beliefs. In the past, we would turn on Bing Crosby and put up our Christmas tree. This year, we won’t do that either. It’s good to just relax when most people are running and spending to “celebrate.” I feel free #bfc530
