Jon, HS Spanish and Technology Mentor in NJ, year 2 w/ 1:1 macbooks, not going to be able to stay the whole hour.
Checking in from ME. My favorite part of my college & HS libraries was the social atmosphere, tables, & access to periodicals.
A1: I loved realizing that there was so much information and FICTION available whenever I wanted it. I was Mr. Browser.
A1: loved that it was quite & I could get work done. & my mom was there :)
A1 I didn't really go to the school library as a kid
John from Saco, ME. Hist Dept Chair and Tech Integrator.

Lindsay, 5/6 Grade Tech Teacher, soon to be Tech Integrationist from IA
A1: How much of a kid? Elem School? High School?
Welcome to the land of the politicians this week in Illinois.
Like you, , I do not remember my elem library. I attended many schools but cannot even picture the space.
A1 I didn't really like my school libraries, but loved public and collegiate libraries as 3rd space - neither public or private
take your choice! they're your memories! ;)
A1: I loved just trolling the shelves. I could get lost for hours just browsing, then it took forever to pick just one or two.
kyle - network administrator. lurking more than usual tonight. not sure how much i can contribute to the discussion.
I always love all of the books and we had a super nice librarian
A1: HS it was definitely the isolation from the chaos of the rest of the school. It had an entire floor to itself.
I remember getting a new 3 investigators book every other we moron the public library
Tye from Far Hills CDS in NJ - Tech Director living the dream :-)
John you and I are still kids
A1: I ALSO remember my Elem. Library because my entire 5th grade sat in there and watched the Challenger explosion
middle/high school librarian 1st yr 1-1 chromebook middle school
., would love to hear your thoughts about reinventing libraries. Jump into
I really loved to learn the library in college. It was the only place I could go to work on computers and print
I was home sick from school that day and watched it myself. Never forget it.
A1: Elementary school it was the possibility to explore. I remember just reading biography after biography.
I have to start reading tweets before tweeting
Thank you for joining us, So glad you could be here. https://t.co/XC1QcOYjp1
Tye from Far Hills CDS in NJ - Tech Director living the dream :-)
You better believe it. That's why I teach: so I can be with the other kids.
A1: Finding all the mystery books.
Probably Nancy Drew or maybe Hardy Boys.
a1: the librarian reading a book aloud to us.
That memory is etched in my memory. 4th grade, Ms. Murphy, a TV on a cart.

I've got that memory too. We watched all the shuttle launches.
A1. Mrs. Grove would pass around Paddington each week ❤️
Being able to check out and read the big kid chapter books!
Joining in tonight - 1:1 4th grade classroom
forever a middle schooler is how I feel most days... (just not the smelly part...)
read aloud memories are the BEST! So very important for all ages!
I live life as a 2nd grader
hi all! A1: moved to new school in 4thgr. Had the best librarian who introduced me to all kinds of new books and authors!
Q2: Describe your favorite things about school libraries you have visited recently.
I think I had a crush on the Hardy Boys - they were so smart.
Bambi, Marguerite Henry books, Cleopatra bio & a librarian who taught us songs about the Dewey Decimal system.
A2 creating more open spaces. Less shelves
A1: The School Library felt like a second home. I fit in - unlike my experiences at Football Rehearsal, for example.
A2: I love the fact that they are no longer silent! Learning can be collaborative & noisy at times & libraries are embracing it!
A1: Ellen Raskin, John Bellairs, E.L. Konigsburg.
weeding books & making room for only GREAT books & not just fillers is a key move
A2: https://t.co/AVNMEKpggp
A2: I love the fact that they are no longer silent! Learning can be collaborative & noisy at times & libraries are embracing it!
A2 more a balance between tech and paper version of the Internet
A2 it sounds simple but my son's library has tables & chairs...I do not have any room but would ❤️ them!
A2: the 'new releases' on display, TL recommendations
A2: love seeing spaces convert to more of a commons w/ multi-uses. Tech allows spaces to transform & be better purposed for all
I've weeded almost 6,500 from our 40 year old HS this year alone
The cool furniture/comfy spaces for kids to enjoy books alone or with friends.
amen to that! I'm usually the loudest person in the library, but it's important to know learning is messy & noisy!
my students convincing another which book would be best to read. Great persuasion and authentic book talk
I weeded through 100 textbooks that are part of our repository
A2 I love the read alouds in Elem. libraries
A2: love libraries that invite kids to sit and read. And collaborate.
A2 Genrefication of the collection , asking Ss to move furniture to suit purpose of use, housing ongoing hands on projs
Another Illinoisan in the house! Welcome.
A2: Love seeing Chromebooks and a place where teachers can collaborate
might need to start trending!
A2: we've reinvented the library at our school. Flexible learning spaces, computer areas, organized by genre, gaming stations
BLENDING of tech & paper; definitely a place for both!
A2: Opening up the space but it can't decide whether or not it is clinging to the past or moving into the future.
Me too! I love walking into our library and seeing collaboration. Not just that, but Ss relaxing too.
Was the change hard to swallow for some? Any opposition?
A2: Our school library now plays music and has added a variety of multimedia to make the environment more engaging and inviting
A2: It included tech with books, allowed kids to explore interests and collaborate, had flexible & alternative seating
A2: we are also adding a lot more choice - makerspace items, board games, collaborative tech
I have a pod with papercrafts and electronic circuits. Both work together
Love the libraries that encourage the open & collaborative space. Also face-to-face conversations that occur when tech's away
Q2 comfy furniture, jigsaw puzzle for all to engage brain when taking break & magazines (only place I read them is Library)
A2: I like the fact that many libraries are loud! Also, book celebrations like and National Poetry Month
A2 Seeing Ts seek out the space to work during their planning period! Comfy, engaging, community.
I think it's more than just tech, but tech allows new opportunities for sure!
A2 more schools going to the bookstore format
Seems most changes involve flexibility of space and mindset
A2: Best school libraries are so student centered that you can't possibly ignore that Ss are their driving force/purpose
A2 - lots of great libraries shared back in Feb during inspired . Open, collaborative, comfortable, etc.
We've opened the space and still have the books around the outside.
yes, I love having an interactive space - interactive between students, materials, etc
we have an extremely forward thinking asst sup who helped positively foster the changing environ. & rocking Librarians!
I like the face-to-face interaction too. As a HS Librarian, I always see my Ss noses stuck in their gadgets
Near Chicago Heights? That's awesome.
Interesting - yes, it'd be great to see Ts in there, not just Ss!
Compared to my youth, wifi & devices make huge difference.
Bookstore model was very new when I switched 6 years ago, but it is a student centered approach & valuable!
but spaces need to be intertwined with book stacks
I would like it to head more towards the future. It's given a nod to it in terms of resources but sticks to old methods.
like the idea of music. I've only done that during exam week at the high school level - classical, jazz - instrumental pieces
Yes. I have a T who "hides out" in my break room, LOL. https://t.co/bC19djTCZE
A2 Seeing Ts seek out the space to work during their planning period! Comfy, engaging, community.
we did and the kids love it!
we are library of congress so it is a little harder to bookstore collection
Admin was challenged w/ how to manage the space that doesn't confine itself to quiet and refrained Our kids LOVE it
It is opening up to new resources but still clinging to old methods. I like moving to the future more.
My library has puzzles, card and board games, legos, K'nex, Makedo kits, crafts, & 15 surface pros.
"Q3: What might you envision are the characteristics of a “Librarian 2.016”?
Fell in love with libraries while and - libraries that had lots of resources and lots of space
We need to work to create a good balance between tech and physical worlds. That doesn't mean 1/2 the Ts use tech though
It's the only place that Ts really have to go to work. I sit among the Ss. Ss LOVE .
support is huge! I have also been blessed w leaders that support my vision
Have my 25th Peddie reunion in June! Old man am I!!!!
Attempting to join my first Twitter Chat! Loving all of the great responses about school libraries.
A3 connected, thought leaders, interactive, process oriented, relevant
babysteps...modeling & using the library as a best practice center helps teachers feel more at ease to try!
A3 a thinker, a doer, combines books with creation tools
that's why I love seeing Ss put tech away & play a game of scrabble or even Exploding Kittens in our space
Librarians are the trained professionals in our buildings when it comes to research & resources. HUGE resource for Dig Literacy
hands on & not just books! LOVE!
A3: valuable resource to Ss, Ts, Ps in variety of ways, including tech
A3: flexibility- in trying new things, new ways to collaborate with staff, looking for ways to excite students about learning
A2: how there are so many choices for every learner and every interest!
A3: I think today's librarians are tech savvy resources for students & teachers who know how to integrate literacy across curr.
A2: Invite Ts and Ss to teach 21st century skills in instruction
A3: Having Tech available to Ss that don't have it themselves, digital/print resources, and spaces for collaborating/creating
Just spent a day at Peddie a few weeks ago, shadowing Assistant Head Catherine Rodrigue - great PD day
That is a great way to look at the 2016 library setting: "Not just books".
absolutely! & collaborate with them too!
A3: Collaborative and willing to try things, open to noise and letting go of control, can balance between print and tech.
love that so many A3's are about working with Ts. This is a newish concept for my staff and I love being a part of it!
My experience at Peddie made me want to become a T!
AND most often have a GREAT sense of humor that it makes you want to be around the librarian.
A3: I see librarians in 2016 as partners with students & faculty to make learning in all of its forms more meaningful
Staff is so important to make it work for Ss
do you make paper Pokemon balls? Used ball from app and created our own Pokemon
A3: We should foster communication/collaboration/critical thinking and continue to spread and encourage choice
good way to purchase tech so more students have access to it & not just certain classes
We have board games too and Chess - always amazes me the number who come in at lunch or before school just to play.
All of us on our campus should share same goals! Not always the case but we are there to help our Ss! Collaborate!
A3: forward thinking risk taker, who embraces technology and leverages it to engage students in reading/research
I keep missing the questions, . Sorry. Are they posted elsewhere?
I have 6 partners now. All over the place
Collaboration should be your Librarian's main super power!
A3: I see myself as an advocate of innovation & a support to any who are ready to try or learn something new
A3: Find fun ways to hook Ss. brought the reality vs fiction brackets to our HS. Anyone else doing that?
I'm just searching Q3 on Tweetdeck
That’s great! What a fantastic use of the space, and it is clearly engaging
same! chess is still a fav activity for my 6th-12th graders as well. (but on their computers too...)
Wow, Sean, that is brilliant. LOL. In the age of google, why in the world didn't I think of that. Thanks!
Very true! The Library is a great place for collaboration to be learned and practiced
A3 coaching Ts in use of technology is another role we play
& willing to give students & teachers a place to
A3: partners and collaborators, willing to change with the times and help whenever.
many libraries seem to be creating, researching, & sharing resources w/ staff members for ST benefit. Positive change.
question is why is Sean awesome?
sorry! I'm tweeting them... Next is now!
Q4: What does a 21st century school library space need to be able to do?
absolutely! We should all be resources for one another.
Sorry, we don't have enough time or characters to answer that one!
A3: I also see our space as an innovation incubator. We can try out new ideas & technology to see if they are classroom worthy
I'm doing Series Madness @ middle school - top 4 series set in brackets with weekly vote off.
A4: It MUST be a flexible and comfortable space. I also think bright and cheery is important too.
A4: it must be able to be flexible and re-configurable, so that it can take the forms and shapes needed for learning activities
A4 have everything on wheels. Be adaptable
A4: all school spaces should be flexible so community can best utilize/transition/share/collaborate. Library = shared space
A 2016 library space needs to be able to support teachers and students in a variety of ways.
yes! coaching is an important hat to wear!
A4: the library should be a place of comfort and all students should feel confident in their abilities to find a book they love
A4: a modern library should foster engagement, which will look different for every patron
A4: 21st Cent School library needs to reinforce research strategies that help identify legitimate vs. illegitimate sources.
A4 21st c libraries should not just adapt to change, they create positive changes for the community they serve
Boom. Mic dropped. https://t.co/Vu8DzXqdUg
A4: a modern library should foster engagement, which will look different for every patron
assisting Ts with differentiation for Ss read below & above grade level & providing audio books
team players & all on the same team!
I would love to see that sheet
Q4: love my library- it's big and bright, tables and chairs in one spot, comfy chairs and a reading area in another.
Like your use of "patron"
A4: Everything on wheels, recording booths, schedule flexibility, self checkout comfortable seating, laptops and tablets
A4 more or less a creator zone with lots of idea materials
Exactly! All need to be on board!
Q4: problem is it's not flexible. After my first year, wondering how to put my own spin on things.
A4: Connect students to the world.
More mic dropping. Brilliant! We need to be setting a gold standard and modeling Growth Mindset https://t.co/2enQP3ucEF
A4 21st c libraries should not just adapt to change, they create positive changes for the community they serve
A4: It needs to accommodate all grades, promote creativity, support curriculum, invite reluctant readers, open eyes to wonders
A4 - 21C libraries accomodate multiple learning styles / areas, I LOVE all my inner shelves are mobile https://t.co/wnYsU5L0kY
Q4: What does a 21st century school library space need to be able to do?
thanks -- sometimes it's a student, other times it is a staff member, teacher or parent group that needs our services
I like these ideas of "everything on wheels"!
Does that mean the librarians will be on hoverboards? Cuz that would rock!
A4 what are we looking at 21st century libraries? We are already there. What is a 22nd century library like?
A4: Support tech/group collaboration while accommodating different groups. Quiet areas still important, w/ also room for noise
you're totally on to something here...
A4: 2016 libraries should offer spaces for collaboration, extending the learning outside the walls of the school
You've just created the title for your keynote address. Love it.
Thx, all! Have to take care of my sons! Be well.
A4: the library should be the center, the home base, the central nervous system, of the Growth Mindset in a school
I like this ! Recording booths? Sweet! https://t.co/ENbbjhzYIA
A4: Everything on wheels, recording booths, schedule flexibility, self checkout comfortable seating, laptops and tablets
Our library was featured in a district vid. S said, "It is one of the most important rooms in our school https://t.co/8xYtXEL7Cl
Our library was featured in a district vid. S said, "It is one of the most important rooms in our school https://t.co/KvHoWBL57L
totally laughing at the idea of me on a hover board. Clumsy enough on my two feet on the ground!!
Q5: What skills do teacher-librarians need to emphasize for students in 1:1 school libraries?
Just like Tech. We can't do Library as 'another thing'. It's all integrated into the learning process.
Yep, I'd injure myself or Ss with one of those. LOL. I need to keep 2 feet on floor.
A: different spaces for different activities within library i.e. conference rms 4 small groups, teacher wrkrm
Have to cut out. Great stuff like usual . See you next week.
your new space certainly does all of those things! Stony's new library ROCKS!
Would love to see pics of your space!
That’s right - every classroom in a school has to be connected in some way, shape or form - like the trees in Avatar
A4: extended hrs before & after school
extension of the classroom...but better! ;)
I have steady stream of ss looking for a quiet spot to record iPad presentations
Wheels have a downside. You wouldn't believe how many times I get asked to have a luncheon etc. in the library.
A5: supporting use of tech for learning; many "digital natives" say they aren't good w/ tech. Ts assume they are & skip modeling
's is a Room of Requirement
A5: power searching skills, + digital footprints, good citizenship, apps/extensions for reading (like feedly)
meeting needs...terrific point!
I know but some folks aren't there yet
we are grateful to our school leaders for their investment in the library program!
No Sean, but I was on a scooter when I broke my ankle in Fall (pun). I can zoom through the stacks!
What’s wrong with doing a Rube Goldberg project in the library? Nothing! That’s where those types of activities can thrive!
but we should also say that libraries of today are also like factories. We are always building somethings
Not always a bad thing maybe luncheon attendees will b interested 2 see what's happening in library!
bottom right is student doing paper mache. Not sure I am doing that again
Honestly when I saw the topic for tonight, wasn't too excited. This has taken me to a new place https://t.co/EMOTSqsW4V
A5: Digital Citizenship, applicable research skills, fostering collaboration, allow for exploration and creation
Love that idea for elementary. Tough sell in a college prep private high school. I think we have different needs
Was late to but need to sign of early. Have a great night. We always need to keep the library as the focal point of the school.
Sometimes - Great, and yes I do but I had to draw a line so the KIDS could use it too! https://t.co/MsNcb5aBZA
Not always a bad thing maybe luncheon attendees will b interested 2 see what's happening in library!
Looks like I missed some great chats tonight. Can't wait to read the archives
Our librarian & I rocked Dig Cit pres. for Ss & an OER Discussion w/ Ts. Love when tech & library worlds collide
I'll try to get them on here
it took half the next day to get paper mache out of the carpet and off walls
Totally agree, library has to fit the school. It plays a very different role from one type of school to another
A5: 😳 What if we taught Ss and Ts how to chat/ share on Twitter? And how to blog/ share/ market? I must do this!
if tech & library worlds aren't colliding, you're doing it wrong!
A5: the librarian can help equip Ss with media & digital literacy skills
Sorry. Wasn't feeling talking about libraries tonight. You & definitely changed my outlook
know your students, community, staff... important to meeting needs of all share holders
would love to hear your take on - it is my dissertation topic
I think that's where we need to host our Lip Sync Battle for music in the schools month. Ts vs Ss.
Q6: Wave your magic wand. Now describe the teacher- librarian and library that’s in front of you.
of course! & invite us to judge via Google Hangouts!
check out - great platform to teach networking and it's free!
Love this idea! https://t.co/4N7Fs1Xy2m
I think that's where we need to host our Lip Sync Battle for music in the schools month. Ts vs Ss.
A6 Cardigan. Coffee. Energy. Imagination. Tenacity. Connections.
Hope some of y'all will be at TLA in Houston!
Great time tonight, all - probably will be dreaming about libraries as I sleep - until next time!
A6: friendly, fired-up about learning and adventurous, life long learner.
all I know is that they stunk the next day
A6: unlimited time, unlimited resources and insta-knowledge (another superpower?) of all things tech!
My IG photo today may have featured one of those things...
A6: So many wantsies for my space. Lego walls, table sized touch screens. Magnet wall, time to properly weed my collection
Great chat tonight! Glad I joined
I'd like to see that in ALL Educators!
A6: empowering - this is a group of Ss presenting their plan for a modern library to PTA & asking for $ https://t.co/N8W31RvPSe
only the essentials, right?
A6: I hope to always serve Ss & Ts. I want to make a diff in someone each day. I want Ss & Ts to want to come to the library
I wouldn't want a librarian w/o these qualities. Glad ours is all of the above https://t.co/vQDBy9g2j8
A6: friendly, fired-up about learning and adventurous, life long learner.
: What did you discover or consider during this evening's chat that will change and/or improve your practice TOMORROW?
A6: and... I want to help connect Ss and Ts to the very large world of info and friends outside the school walls!
A7: energetic, risk taker, collaborator, leader, forward thinking, resourceful, empowering
Can't wait to read the chat history for . Hate I missed the chance to chat.
This is exactly what we need to see more of in our schools. The Ss taking ownership & leadership roles.
PTA is fired up & on board! Auction this Friday night should help raise some of it :)
& allowing students to have a say in decisions
LW need to print more poke balls
Must start reevaluating flexibly of space in my library
thanks! Haven't seen this one. Have you seen ?
Lastword: Never be satisfied. This is one key to growth- you have all helped me grow tonight! Sorry I was late to !
