Oh forgot my win... I created 3 digital escape rooms this week to help prepare my Ss for up coming state tests. They were begging for 5 more minutes if math each day and were so exited when they unlocked the next level #masterychat
Kristen from PA. I teach 6th grade physical science. My win is that I finally figured out how to blog with my ss. Last week I created a class blog and had all of my ss post to that blog. Needless to say none of those posts can be published, but this week’s blogs can! #MasteryChat
Amanda here! My win involves juking a student out of his soccer shoes. He, of course, helped teach me some of the moves (I have zero experience with soccer)... and it worked! Teaching: my class dominated prepositions phrases in #shakespeare.
#MasteryChat
A1: The combination of digital and personal connection creates students that are faster, more focused, and more productive than the traditional standards of the 20th Century. #MasteryChat
A1 Blended learning is the bee's knees and will absolutely transform the way our world functions and the way our students experience learning. LOVE IT! #masterychat
Hey #MasteryChat! Ambre from SoCal-11th/12th Eng, SPED, Curriculum Coordinator-success of the week: 11th graders completed 2 week of rotating stations-
My win this week was hearing students' thoughts about the Essential Question: What is our responsibility to other people? after reading Wiesel's Night and other related texts #futureisbright#masterychat
My win this week is that I finished my first mastery grid and my students are currently LOVING working through it!! Thanks @TechieTeachOtt@thegridmethod#masterychat
A1 successfully merging multiple modalities can drastically increase student understanding and assimilation of new content #blendedlearning#masterychat
A) Laura McDonell from St Clair, Mi middle school teacher. Win for the week meaningful conversation w a student and witnessing sweet creativity from students #masterychat
Pam here from MN I teach 4th grade and my win this week was finishing the final touches on our #teachfurther unit that we will be introducing mon! SO excited!! #masterychat
Would love to make it but going to be in car. Would love some feedback from this group on grade conferences for #gradeless classrooms. What criteria do you give to students to determine final grade. #masterychat
A2: The six to seven other teachers who will not be open to using it creating and me vs. then mentality for my students. I become the “weird teacher” that everyone complains about and it’s used as an excuse not to try new methods. #MasteryChat
A2 I am a. 100% blended learning convert, but I have two worries. One that it is dismissed by teachers as too difficult or unnecessary. The second is that it will be used ineffectively (sticking students on a. computer program and that is all) #masterychat
A2: Great question to start with! I'm concerned about managing logistics - how to support all students at different points in the curriculum. Huge learning curve for me, but I'm getting there little by little #masterychat
A1: This. We have so many amazing tools to use now- it’s an amazing resource when used appropriately. Using the technology and combined with some not tech resources make a beautiful learning experience. #MasteryChat
A2: A major concern is whether the online work connects to the work done in class. Many college Ss do not go well in hybrid courses where the online activity has no connection to what happens in the classroom. #MasteryChat
A2: from what I see it is the fear of losing an instructional day if it fails. There is uncertainty in taking a risk but there is also the potential for huge growth! Trust the process and enjoy the journey with your Ss! #failforward#blendedlearning#MasteryChat
A2 I worry most about mindset and buy-in. Trying to get others excited and on board is tough and I'm always nervous that people don't want to listen to me because of my content, my age, my years at the school, etc. #MasteryChat
A2. Will I like the idea more than the Ss? If they don’t like it, it won’t assist/facilitate learning effectively. So far most of it has worked out. #MasteryChat
A2: being blended means there has to be a lot of teaching academic behaviors. Sometimes we lose time, And when students are engaged, that time is essential to have. Planning has to be on point. #MasteryChat
A2: Just the management, I look at it and see the benefit but feel that it needs to start young. Just trying to build choice in my class in JH with kids who have not had it is too much. Multiple options at once...scary haha #MasteryChat
A2 - I personally have none, and LOVE blended learning, but many teachers fear what they don't fully understanding. The funniest part of this is that understanding comes from TRYING, FAILING, and REWORKING the use of new ideas constantly trying to #teachbetter#masterychat
A2 one challenge is communicating the why to students and parents. Explaining how and why we want students to work differently is an important step to getting started! #MasteryChat
A2: My goal is to try to do a flipped classroom, but I think my biggest fear is whether or not students are truly learning. Technology should enhance our instruction, and although I love technology, I think having a balance is key. #MasteryChat
A2: I don't really have any concerns because I learn this way and I'm "old" so I don't worry much about going big. I think just staying connected is the important piece! #masterychat
GUYS! This awesome teacher just implemented @thegridmethod this week and is ROCKING it! So excited for you, Laurena and can't wait to hear your continued success with super duper awesome personalized learning! #masterychat
My win this week is that I finished my first mastery grid and my students are currently LOVING working through it!! Thanks @TechieTeachOtt@thegridmethod#masterychat
A2: The six to seven other teachers who will not be open to using it creating and me vs. then mentality for my students. I become the “weird teacher” that everyone complains about and it’s used as an excuse not to try new methods. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A2. I'm a T, so within the classroom, I'd be concerned abt whether all kids would have computers and internet access at home, if the model would include online classes.
A struggle for me within the controlled chaos is how to best support those kiddos who emotionally can't handle the chaos and become over stimulated and behaviors become a problem. #masterychat
A2: The biggest challenge with #blendedlearning is ensuring that students have a healthy balance of screen time and peer-to-peer collaboration. If we abuse #edtech then we begin to lose our connection with students #masterychat
So true! I think this gets easier once we get easier on ourselves as teachers. Once we know it's OK to make mistakes and adjust each day to improve, we can try all sorts of new things and actually grow as educators #practicewhatwepreach#masterychat
A2 - I work in an #alted#PBL school so blended learning is the norm. If there’s a concern, it more for the Ss. You want to make sure they understand it in order to embrace it. #masterychat
A2) For me, it's my Ss' age. They r 6/7 yrs old, & I feel most of their learning should be non-digital (most, not all). I definitely use digistal in my classroom, but w/caution. #masterychat
Blended (or hybrid) courses combine the best of both worlds -- the flexibility of the online environment and the personalized nature of the onsite classroom. #MasteryChat
A2: Having others accept that things can and will be different. More choice, voice, and control is given to learners and that freedom can be unsettling for others. Happy to have to support of admin & district leaders during our implementation! #masteychat#futureready204
A2: One of the biggest challenges I face, is limited access to technology. I incorporate technology and blended learning styles into every content area, but need more tech. #masterychat
A2 taking. Leap into the unknown was scary but has been SO worth it! I was afraid I would miss things but have found out the exact opposite. #masterychat
A2 often i hear that blended learnings a lot of work up front... really it’s a change in how we plan and design the lesson. Shifting the work to the front end design! #MasteryChat
#masterychat A2: My biggest concern with #BlendedLearning is acceptance of the methods by Parents, admin, colleagues who are more used to a more conventional classroom experience - especially in math.
A2: Making sure we are not just going through the motions to “say” we do “blended learning”. It needs to be meaningful and purposeful. Ya not being afraid to try new stuff. (I love new methods...so much fun) #masterychat#blendedlearning
A3 - Incorporated a blended approach to @thegridmethod can be amazing when done correctly. The balance of digital, personal, and relational tactics is something that is truly awesome to whiteness! #masterychat
#FlippedLearning is an AWESOME way to have students truly learn. The beauty of it is that you have SO much time in class to be having tons of conversations about what students do and do not understand. #masterychat
A2: My goal is to try to do a flipped classroom, but I think my biggest fear is whether or not students are truly learning. Technology should enhance our instruction, and although I love technology, I think having a balance is key. #MasteryChat
A3: I have not had much experience with blended learning. I have personally used @nearpod and @flipgrid and loved both, but this is an area I want to improve in. #MasteryChat
Wow! That is what I want my class to look like! Days like today make me wonder if I could do it ( :/ ), but the wonderful Ts at #masterychat is making me excited to keep going at it!
A1: The combination of digital and personal connection creates students that are faster, more focused, and more productive than the traditional standards of the 20th Century. #MasteryChat
A3: In a hybrid World Lit course, Ss read the literary text and engage in an online discussion BEFORE we analyze it in class. Offer the introverted Ss an opportunity to speak. And Ss get to experiment w/ the text before I talk about it. #MasteryChat
A3: I love stations! Some use technology, some don’t, and of course a small group with the T. Sometimes the tech is merely substitution and other times it is used to create and collaborate. It’s important to mix it up and gives Ss choice in their learning. #MasteryChat
It gets easier when you realize that you never really had total control in the first place. Engagement is more important than the illusion of control :) I also try to remember that students learn better when they have control #masterychat
#MasteryChat Jennifer from SE Ohio. This is my first Mastery Chat! My win...a male student (new to me) I have working with came up to me, said Hi! and gave me a hug...in front of his friends!! Big win!
Teaching students HOW to learn in a blended environemnt is absolutely key. I take a couple classes to model and teach how to learn from video or digital resources. It is a skill that can be developed! #masterychat
A3: Incorporated it last year with standard level US History and was able to use it to build the confidence of nearly 20% of my kids to take AP US Gov’t and AP Macroeconomics! Work got better, kids engagement improved. Just giving options was big. #MasteryChat
A2. Our Ss enjoy working with technology, at times, they are learning things faster than teachers are learning. Trying new things, innovatiion keeps up with 21st century learning. #masterychat
A3: Flexible searing all the way! Change up the traditional mindset of compliance and take the risk every child deserves! Empower them to be in charge of their learning in all settings! # Nan3EDU #masterychat
I signed up for the free class. Watched first video! Then I fell asleep :( Home sick. So many questions - Howard from Silicon Valley. Full Inclusion campus. #masterychat
A3 opens up so much more for in class activities, love using stations and having time to work with each group, each student, more student driven, #masterychat
Nice! I realized that I was finally connecting with the boys in my class when one of them came up and showed me a picture of the calf he was raising for 4H on his phone. Such a great feeling! #masterychat
A2: I think the biggest concern most teachers have is how do I fit this into the curriculum? My advice is just take the leap and learn along side the students! #masterychat
A3 My SS broke out of the Middle Ages! We watched videos, scanned QR codes, looked through books, figured out clues, and even built trebuchets! Great mix of high and low tech to build skills and help students access info in different ways #MasteryChat
Blended learning in college courses -- transfers the balance of learning to the Ss rather than traditionally to the professor. Class time transformed to engaged learning. #MasteryChat
A3: I've been working to increase Ss comfort level with a variety of computer-based activities and curricular programs. Instruction using the classic "paper and pencil" and reteaching using technology. Reflecting to compare their success rate. #masterychat
A3. 7 groups doing different things to learn digestion - 2 groups doing book research, one making a puppet show, 2 making board games, 1 making blabberize vids. S with stars? Astronomy lab. #MasteryChat
A3) Can’t find the pictures, but I’ve had many students boost their Lexie over 100 points since beginning of the year using @Achieve3000. Reading is at their level so they can be successful #MasteryChat
A3) Currently we r researching & writing about animals. Some groups r using regular books, & 1 group at a time used ipads to access Epic to do their research there. Kind of blended, but not super blended. #masterychat
A2: I am stuck between wanting students to become global citizens and maintaining security. I am worried about our media release form not covering my tech or parents not being informed enough of technology I am choosing to use And getting in trouble when I use it. #masterychat
A3: I made an instructional video that taught kids how to construct a full linear regression using google sheets. They used that video to analyze the impact of neighborhood factors on crime in their city and constructed proposals to the mayor with potential solutions #masterychat
A3 - we built a virtual city (aka Sim Cityesque) as an intro to an engineering and design project. Ss had to group themselves by needs for their cities (designers, builders, bankers, import/exporters, etc). It got messy in the middle, but worked for laying the fdn #masterychat
Always here to help teachers trying to do awesome things. If I can help a teacher figure it out, I get to impact so many students that I don't even see! #masterychat
A3: So this one is more personal. My daughter came up with a blended, gamified shopping taks last weekend. I think that to have the Ss run with it is just straight up cool! #masterychat
A1: When I hear “blended learning” I still usually think of a flipped classroom. But then I remember that we do some blended learning as part of my online school. We call it “field trips” and “STEAM day” and “choice curriculum.” #masterychat
#masterychat A2 Explaining the blended learning concept to parents can be tricky at times. They eventually gain an understanding of the benefits for their children.
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
So far so good, it has been fun and encouraging. It has helped my students feel more independent and it has also given me enough time to monitor each student and give feedbacks when necessary #masterychat
A3: In a hybrid World Lit course, Ss read the literary text and engage in an online discussion BEFORE we analyze it in class. Offer the introverted Ss an opportunity to speak. And Ss get to experiment w/ the text before I talk about it. #MasteryChat
A2-1. I won't know how to do something; 2. Ss won't complete everything 3. Fair assessments 4. Wifi won't work 5. Knowing if Ss are really engaged 6. There's discussion--which some call noise. . . #MasteryChat
A3 as we have designed purposeful blended learning opportunities in our HS, we have seen an increase of student collaboration and communication. Usually the 1st observation from visitors! #MasteryChat
A3 A student today asked "Does light effect gravity?" It was out of the blue & from the tone we've set in the classroom of #questioneverything#masterychat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A3: authentic audiences are key. Ss can be working on different skills but have the same goals. We did this by selling backpacks in 6th grade- focused on scientific reasoning...again in 8th with Ss across the world who wanted to learn about indigenous populations. #masterychat
I say roll the dice. If it’s for the kids and your teaching them about safety and security with digital resources, you’re in the right... Then again, I’m not one for following authority. #MasteryChat
Google Classroom has helped me dip my toe into #blendedlearning - I did a synthesis unit on Civil Disobedience and had articles, songs, and poems available and students read, commented, and responded to each other. Silent disc brought more students into the convo #masterychat
Be careful about making changes just to follow the crowd. Sometimes the best move is to go against the trends.
Sometimes the best move is to stay the same.
#MasteryChat
A3 the move to blended learning allowed me to personalize my classroom and my kids made incredible growth, not just in their subject, but with independence and agency #masterychat
A3: Students are currently working on researching their favorite inventor of choice, and preparing to teach their peers about what they discover. I’ll have pics next week! #masterychat
A3: In a hybrid World Lit course, Ss read the literary text and engage in an online discussion BEFORE we analyze it in class. Offer the introverted Ss an opportunity to speak. And Ss get to experiment w/ the text before I talk about it. #MasteryChat
A4. Biggest one is time. Haven’t yet other than to reduce number of units or activities within a unit. Don’t like giving lots of homework. #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A3. Different projects, Researching alone, in teams, sharing work with me on Docs..Scientists and Creating their own Math games are recent.
A4 1 of the largest barriers I see w blended learning is planning for resources. Ts can get excited & plan for resources they want instead of those they have. By utilizing daily resources we have is always important & will help keep instruction efficient & manageable #masterychat
A4 Corralling the activity & social behavior To get around this assign jobs & tasks, give Ss clear time frame so they know they need to get to work #masterychat
A2: Scary, yes! My fear is failing or causing my students to stumble and fail. I’m trying to adapt a growth mindset to #failforward. But I can’t deny there is a lot of careful consideration before I make a change to my program. #masterychat
A3: watching students actually take pride and ownership over their own learning is an amazing sight in the classroom....I had one boy ask to work through his recess yesterday because he wanted finish his lesson to move on to the next activity!#masterychat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4: when I first started I didn’t have enough access to technology. But you work around it by having Ss work in groups and add more variety of activities. You don’t need 1:1! It’s crucial to have good classroom management and very clear expectations of S behavior. #MasteryChat
Online discussions are wonderful for including and engaging all students. You can also do this low tech by posting questions around the room and having students rotate through and respond to each other #MasteryChat
A3 I love cloning my lessons so kids can have then one demand. This is helpful when we are working on math notebooks or Ss are working on practice activities with multiple steps. #masterychat
A4 had a T use @nearpod to assign 2 different lessons (supporting diff levels) and Ss worked thru the lesson interacting with @nearpod, writing in their journals, and annotating with diff colored markers on paper #masterychat
A3: Incorporating online discussions has allowed students who don’t always want to share aloud express their thoughts, opinions, and provide peer feedback. #masterychat
A4: I think my barrier is time and being new to the field. I am trying to get classroom management down first prior to feeling comfortable enough to branch out. As mentioned, I do use technology and want to flip my classroom, but I want to feel comfortable first. #MasteryChat
A4 Usually for me trying something new is thinking forward on how to manage good use of time and resources. I try anticipate areas I think may be problematic and problem solve in advance #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A3 I love the days where there is a busy hum. Ss are working together and independently (or as independently as 6 year olds can 😊) Being able to meet with all my groups is the goal #MasteryChat
A4: The diverse level of student proficient technology skills. Building time into the lesson for explicit instruction to empower independent computer use. #masterychat
#masterychat Q4 One of the barriers can sometimes be the readiness of the students for blended learning. Students seem to be at varying levels when it comes to their knowledge of computers and digital applications. I have had to spend time with this area at all grade levels.
My win for the week. I have sent off multiple cards this week to thank people for their support of my students and our school. Their support has meant so much. #MasteryChat
A4: #BlendedLearning needs resources to be successful. I brought many things from home, bought flexible seating and cheap supplies. It took a while to fully stock, but WORTH IT!! #MasteryChat
A4 planning can be a challenge at first, but it gets easier with time, and also by asking Ss for feedback as well, has helped me a lot the past couple of years . #masterychat
A4) We can’t download extensions on our chromebooks. @InsertLearning can’t be downloaded, so I’ll take a reading and add comments/questions for students to see in a Google Doc to help them comprehend #MasteryChat
A4: Possible barriers are admins who doubt the efficacy of blended learning. In fact, there is research that reflects Ss achieving higher success rates than in traditional online or onsite courses. #MasteryChat
A4: There are many education leaders that equate a teacher driven blended learning model with online courses. Often we have to defend the use of blended learning by articulating that it will NOT replace the authenticity of the teacher #masterychat
A3: One amazing advantage is the ability to work with small groups and increase the amount of time I spend w/each Ss -Also, w/tech, I can make so many tutorial videos quickly & Ss are able to get right to work w/o waiting for lecture #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A3: this year all our classes had LMSs. I was able to assign videos to be watched among other things. 8 came close to flipping the learning but that will wait u til next year. #masterychat
A3: @PickAltSchool we are all about blended learning and trying to bring in experiential learning. Getting out on college tours. Learning about the admission process.
#MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A3 Oh my gosh. Far too many to list in 280 characters! Ss creating documentaries through @flipgrid. Running a flipped classroom w/ @edpuzzle & getting incredible formative assessment! Using @classcraftgame to increase S engagement and support positive behaviors. #masterychat
Virtual field trips through #googleexpeditions. Collaborative writing and revising through Google Doc sharing. Supporting differentiated math instruction with @khanacademy. The list seriously just doesn't stop! #masterychat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4: While I don't do much of blended learning, however, I realize that when I want to try something a real struggle is the availability of technology. We don't have enough technology w/ all the state & district testing it is gobbled up for that. #masterychat
A4 - honestly in general, the largest obstacle is TIME. My #alted#PBL Ss work at different paces. Since things are phased out, we start as a group but when they shift to next phase, it’s more self-paced. Ss often take longer based on their levels #masterychat
A4 My school is not 1:1 and sometimes we don't have enough devices. We work with something tactile in class & I can scan pics to upload to our LMS so Ss can look over them again or use them for another portion of the activity later when it works for them #MasteryChat
A3. Blended learning allows Ss to take ownership of their own learning, if they don't finish projects, they set times aside to meet and finish projects. Set deadlines when they feel they can complete their goals! #masterychat
A3: Flipping the classroom. Watch a video/examples before attending class. I love this- then they know what to expect-when they get to class, they are ready with questions. Ss that get it can move on to a different activity & differentiation/ targeted reteach. #masterychat
Spring is HOT & worse than summer b/c it gets humid. The humidity builds and by early June our rainy season begins. Though it's still warm then, the rain provides some relief from the heat, which makes it feel more bearable than spring (at least 2 me). #masterychat
A4: Haven't really overcome this one, yet - trying to find a manageable system for monitoring student progress in project based learning - benchmarks, troubleshooting, etc #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
I think we must be purposeful - what is the best tool and opportunity for our students to learn and practice? Don’t just choose tech. Choose what is best. Reflect on why it’s best. Help students start to make the choice of using what is the best tool for the job #MasteryChat
Agreed! We often refer to "digital natives," but many of our Ss are more knowledgeable about social media platforms than about learning technologies or how to apply them to deep learning. #masterychat
#masterychat Q4 One of the barriers can sometimes be the readiness of the students for blended learning. Students seem to be at varying levels when it comes to their knowledge of computers and digital applications. I have had to spend time with this area at all grade levels.
A4 Resources have been a concern. I am in a new grade level and have to make/find new resources. I did write and receive 2 DonorsChoose projects to add more tech to our class. #MasteryChat
A4 accesses a big challenge. Not having the tech, not having the spaces, time, or materials can all slow down creating certain blended learning models #masterychat
A4 Tech access is a challenge, but we share iPads, use stations to stretch the tech, pop into the computer lab when available, or beg and borrow from other teachers. Even if you aren't 1 to 1, you can blend a classroom effectively! #masterychat
This is my favorite, love the interaction and being able to connect w/Ss and for them to build their peer relationships, collaborate and lead #masterychat
A4: 21 years into teaching I had no clue how to use half or more of the opportunities for my Ss. Love my PLN and #4OCF PD along with Ss empowered to learn new ways bc they realize I am not the sole resource to their learning! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
A4: Challenges incorporating blended learning include TIME on my end planning and providing enough rigor and opportunity to reach all student learning abilities. #masterychat
A4: Going to fast and making assumptions. I’ve slowed down considerably, been more purposeful and targeting, and sought support. Truthfully, I can’t imagine not doing Blended Learning! #masterychat#FutureReady204
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4 Late to the chat, but my barrier is wanting to do too much and not slowing down and implementing for mastery. LOL there's so much out there that I want my students to have it all. I rewind when I notice my students overwhelmed or confused #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4: I was the biggest barrier in my implementation. Once I took one step, my students took two. They did what I couldn’t get them to do before so I had to change quickly.
A4: Major barrier is ACCESS. Some Ss simply do not have the technology to participate in online activities at home. No device, no internet connection, etc. #MasteryChat
Q4: The idea of motivating students is a barrier to #blendedlearning as relationship development is how I normally do it. Recording videos of myself is the CURRENT way I overcome that. #MasteryChat
I was visiting a friend whose 7th grader had just received the same exact assignment her senior in high school had as a 7th grader. I don't understand Ts that can work that way either. Here's to having a growth mindset and willingness to try more. #masterychat
A4: Not being 1:1 makes it tough but I learned to work around it - make plans when I knew I would have devices, plan for non tech activities and put together some @DonorsChoose projects and grants to slowly increase devices in my classroom #masterychat
A4: Also, motivation is sometimes a barrier. Some students need more support in moving forward in #blendedlearning - I've found regular whole class debriefing discussions and indiv conferences help with this #MasteryChat - https://t.co/mDOzVOprwT
A4 building my own capacity and pedagogy. This is not how I learned how to teach so I feel like I’m in a constant state of envisioning and then trying to do. Learning how to use tech purposefully too has helped. I’m grateful for @alicekeeler for all that she shares #MasteryChat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
Q4: Subscriptions to websites, 1:1 devices...lists of resources that would be helpful (besides videos). Giving teachers ALL the tools to help the learning be more effective. #masterychat#BlendedLearning
Sometimes I️ am concerned if it may too much for students to handle the freedom and independence but I️ just take the chance and I️’m usually pleasantly surprised #masterychat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
A5 - @thegridmethod takes time, place, path and pace into account and is a great way to organize instruction to meet the needs of ALL learners. This makes it a great companion to blended learning. #masterychat
The dangerous trap of blended learning is that it requires pedagogical intention. Can't just throw a bunch of docs or PowerPoints on the web and call it "blended." #MasteryChat
A4 there is a cycle to learning and implementing new things. Imagine knowing someone who could mentor you through these types of transitions... #masterychat#theteachersjourney
A4: Reading all of your responses, I realize how lucky I am. We are 1:1 and are Encouraged to try new resources. And my answer will be the same as question 3, which is I’m just worried about the parents who declined the media release form. #MasteryChat
A2: It was definitely scary at first. Advice: Dip your toes in first. Don’t take a dive in the deep end because you may drown—like I did initially! #MasteryChat#KirkRoarBL#CfisdBL (#WeirdestGifEver)
A4) Again, the Ss' young age, so I keep digital things limited&use w/caution. Also, being young learners means any tech issue throws them way off.Signing into things is tough,&if something weird happens along the way, they typically do not know how2 problem solve it. #masterychat
A4: Sometimes the barrier is just getting started! I’m excited about incorporating blended learning, but fear of failure has been holding me back. I’m just going to do it, and learn from my mistakes! #masterychat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4-I have two classes where I have so many Ss that need more support & I know I can't be everywhere--but it always works out that Ss help each other if I'm not available #MasteryChat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
I think back to seven years ago when I first did a flipped classroom and am grateful that we have come so far in that area. The access issue is still an issue, obviously, but it becomes less so every year. #masterychat
A2: Proof of concept is a powerful thing 💥 if you get something good going for your Ss it will spread like wildfire & you might find teacher buy-in a little bit easier 🤞 #MasteryChat
Every A&P unit is S choice - path, place (room location), pace, and assessment. Other course are flexible pacing and place. All involve standards based grading. #MasteryChat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
#masterychat Q5 PACE! I hate working to a bell. I much prefer laying out the goals, both longer and shorter term and then allowing students to self pace. Just as students all learn differently, they all need different time windows as well.
A5 Pace: I focus on Ss communication of ideas, not how much content they can memorize This allows me to let the Ss & their thoughts & ideas dictate the pace of science class #MasteryChat
A5: Utilizing Google Classroom, I’m able to setup structures & opportunities for kids to maximize their learning at their own pace based on their own choices. Then I can adjust to meet individual needs. Kids will naturally go faster and try harder with more control. #MasteryChat
A5 - One of the biggest things that I’ve started is not giving homework. This allowed the time for students to catch up with self paced playlists if needed. Class was just a place to get the work done and I found many kids didn’t want to waste that precious time. #masterychat
Yes! They are so ready for blended learning- begging for it! Once we open it up and let them teach us, amazing things can happen. I love when my students show me a new Google Docs shortcut or how to manipulate code- such an exciting time to teach! #masterychat
A4: I was the biggest barrier in my implementation. Once I took one step, my students took two. They did what I couldn’t get them to do before so I had to change quickly.
A4: Providing too many resources or too much choice all at once can cause a loss of focus for Ts and Ss. Step back and consider each lesson’s focus and expected Ss outcomes, choose tools judiciously! Backmapping is key! #MasteryChat
A4 I need to work on why I am doing what I'm doing. I need to make sure I let Ss know, and that *I* know, why we're doing or using something and that I'm not doing it for the sake of checking it off of a blended learning checklist. #masterychat
A1) Path: reading on their level w @Achieve3000/ writing w @noredink. Time: using BlendSpace from @Tes_Teach for student self directed learning through quizzes w immediate feedback, discussion thread, and ease of dropping in content for students to collaborate #MasteryChat
A5: Playlists and bonus tracks! Using HyperDocs as “playlists” where Ss complete tasks at their own pace & explore “bonus tracks” to expand and relearn, as needed. #MasteryChat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
A5: path and pace as I meet in groups with students to reflect on skill development and the voice/choice of where do we go from here. Now they come to me with ideas to change paths or to get extra sessions for learning. #masterychat
A5: I found students need lessons to include flexibility for individual pacing. Teaching in a self-contained setting and incorporating these ideals has increased student comfort with learning. #masterychat
A5: By simply making different unit sections as online modules, students are able to progress at their own pace and I’m able to see their progress and provide helpful feedback during the learning process. #masterychat
A5: I build instructional videos that replace all my lectures. Students work entirely at their own pace and cannot move on without mastering a lesson. It has revolutionized the way I approach authentic learning. I would never go back #Masterychat
Never get Comfortable - comfort means you need to try something new! Consider building your toolbox of Strategies. This will then allow you to pull them out as needed! #Masterychat
A3: Blended learning + standards based grading has helped me see exactly which skills my studends fo and do not have and helped me better support them. #MasteryChat
True -- but am consistently surprised to learn of rates of poverty among our Ss. Had a student attending my course who was homeless at the time. Totally floored me. #masterychat
I think back to seven years ago when I first did a flipped classroom and am grateful that we have come so far in that area. The access issue is still an issue, obviously, but it becomes less so every year. #masterychat
A5 - my #alted#PBL Ss are taught how to pace their work based on challenging themselves and ensuring they understand/defend their learning. #masterychat
You know what they say about assumptions....
But seriously, I have been in the same boat. Assuming a skill and then having to backtrack when it becomes very obvious that skill is not there yet! #masterychat
1st AP Lang Summer Institute I attended, a professor started every session with a poem. I have never wavered from that emphasis. Poets have “arguments” to make, as everything ultimately IS one-either with ideas, with ourselves, with consumer choices...
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
A5 Choice boards allow my students to take different paths to the same learning. Boards are created intentionally to offer choices in a variety of learning styles #masterychat
A2 I think getting buy in from other teachers on my team can be a challenge. Some are stuck in the "this is how we have always done it" comfort zone. #MasteryChat
A5) I feel I don't know a lot of this. I do create a website attached to our unit with videos, books and links and let the Ss just explore it. They can choose what they want to view (from the site I create). #masterychat
A5: If I have to pick one, it would be pave. Blended learning allows Ss to take their time and dig into a concept before moving on. Scaffolded lessons help the struggling Ss but allows the advanced Ss to move one when ready. #MasteryChat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
A4: I find barriers are often a mindset. Innovation, growth, and positive change have to be the lens if we want to make a difference. #MasteryChat#change#blendedlearning
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
Using the Grid @thegridmethod has been a game changer for my students Self Paced, Mastery Focus! I could never go back! It has Flexibility, Pace, and Fun all in one #Masterychat
Q5 We often talk about blended learning as a way to build flexibility with time, place, path, and pace so Ss can personalize their learning. What is one way you currently use one of the 4 core ideals to help Ss in your classroom/school? #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat A5. I'm going to say place and pace. Students are given a time "window" to complete, but I really enjoy watching them work on projects..Then, I also support them with any supplies/materials they might need
A5 My Ss get to use their time however they think is best when they work on a project. They plan out who does what when, their personal deadlines, and their pace to do an awesome job in the overall time frame I give them. If we need more time, we're flexible! #MasteryChat
A5: PBL is an incredible vehicle to blended learning. It allows students to drive their learning through multiple platforms that encompass their strengths and passions. #Nan3EDU#MasteryChat
That is awesome, Kareem! Kudos to you. We are all about self paced mastery learning at @thegridmethod. We should talk! I want to hear more about how you are implementing it in your classes! #masterychat
In reply to
@Kareemfarah23, @RaeHughart, @thegridmethod
Q5: I have used Cognitive Tutor in the classroom for Algebra I. It allows kids to work at their own pace after we learn/reteach together. The students would use this for about 30 mins of our 90 minute block & they can continue to work through at home. It self paces #masterychat
A5: Perhaps blended learning best supports the idea that "learning is fixed; time is variable." Ss can continue at their own pace, using the technology to customize their unique learning paths. #MasteryChat
I am a pretty lucky lady. Blessed with an awesome family that supports me in my crazy education adventures (and way too slobbery Great Dane kisses!) #masterychat
So true! Talking about our intentions is such a great way to make sure we are actually helping students learn AND it's a great way to model it for SS #masterychat
Due to this chat, I feel inspired to not get comfortable and venture outside of my comfort zone. I want to make a change, and I know that I want to #teachbetter. #MasteryChat
A3: I met w/an advisory student & his mom in his home. Because of rushing, he’d missed some concepts. We reviewed the lesson, & I could see how it was complicated at a glance. So we searched for a Khan academy video on it. All 3 of us worked to learn the topic. #masterychat
Every unit should be taught through a story line that ends in a culminating project with real world connections. It requires time but is always worth it #MasteryChat
I have multiple lessons planned for the rest of this year that allow students to move at their own pace and mastery. I hope to use @thegridmethod next year, just have not had the time or resources to do it now. #masterychat
A5 Flexibility with Time, Pace. I allow students to complete their work at their own pace, not rushing them too much. This I believe helps them understand better #masterychat
A5:!i allow ss to choose how they want to show learning on their blog. We did a blueprint for their #RubeGoldberg machines. Some free on the screen and explained as they drew. Some @Screencastify their desktop. Others wrote a story. #MasteryChat
Q6 Education is like pumping iron - the more purposeful reps you take, the stronger you become! Think about doing "just one more". What is just one more way you could use time, place, path, or pace to help students take charge of their learning? #MasteryChat
A5: Perhaps blended learning best supports the idea that "learning is fixed; time is variable." Ss can continue at their own pace, using the technology to customize their unique learning paths. #MasteryChat
A5 I have been using blended learning as one way to differentiate instruction. Ss use tech programs for intervention. Activities are based on their needs. #MasteryChat
Blended learning also supports use of open educational resources (#OER). Love the flexibility of using open content that I can't achieve with a commercial textbook. #MasteryChat
Do it!!! I have worked with @DonorsChoose several times and have found it to pay forward for so many of my Ss! Amazing platform! 🙌 #Nan3EDU#MasteryChat

A5. It definitely takes time, working with Ss, demonstrations and sometimes notecards with login names and passwords help guide them, Allowing them to pace themselves as they learn. Mastery focus! #masterychat
Q6 Education is like pumping iron - the more purposeful reps you take, the stronger you become! Think about doing "just one more". What is just one more way you could use time, place, path, or pace to help students take charge of their learning? #MasteryChat
Question to the group - not really knowing blended learning and the 4 components how do you help those students at the elementary level that lack executive functioning skills? #masterychat
A6 - Continuing to build ownership and provide students with freedom in the classroom on top of using @thegridmethod is something I always push #gridnation to do. #masterychat
Q6 Education is like pumping iron - the more purposeful reps you take, the stronger you become! Think about doing "just one more". What is just one more way you could use time, place, path, or pace to help students take charge of their learning? #MasteryChat
Q5: It’s all about pace for us. We don’t care how fast your learn something. We are just thrilled when you learn it. Learning is learning. We don’t care about the timeline! #MasteryChat
When you drive a faster, more powerful car your skills must be on point to take advantage of the power. The same applies to strengthening our pedagogy when using better activities/tech and take advantage of the real power & possibilities #chantillypd@ddmeyer
A2. Taking the time to create meaningful learning opportunities for S's to delve into & discover a plethora of pathways to assemble solid structures of knowledge and understanding. Tiring, overwhelming sometimes but watching them learn in innovative ways is awesome! #MasteryChat
A6: Assessment. I need to find better, more useful ways for students to assess their knowledge, demonstrate their skills, and measure their mastery. I want better tools and I want the kids to have them readily available when needed. #MasteryChat
A5 PACE! This appears to be a common answer tonight- makes me so happy! I love letting Ss move at THEIR pace through content, getting support & enrichment as needed. I can't imagine doing it any other way now- so glad I found @thegridmethod (or they found me, lol) #masterychat
Q6 Education is like pumping iron - the more purposeful reps you take, the stronger you become! Think about doing "just one more". What is just one more way you could use time, place, path, or pace to help students take charge of their learning? #MasteryChat
A6: Increasing student choice by providing multiple paths to mastery. It all depends on their individual needs and personal interests. Tailoring instruction with embedded differentiation and a variety of materials. #masterychat
A6 Just one more path! Letting Ss drive things down the road they choose is what is best for them Trying to give them confidence & platform for 1 more rep is the goal #masterychat
A6 I could add it in more during math. We use Dreambox as a station and games based on AVMR levels. But they don’t really create in math using tech. We have done that much more in ELA. #MasteryChat
Thats totally up to you. The online course if self paced and up to you how long you may need. It is lifetime access!
Id love to help you get started if you need it! #Masterychat
Made a few tweaks to our playlist: kids select ‘done’ from dropdown & the cell fills in with desired color! SO easy! 🙌🏼
Made an ‘on the fly’ video to share how - check it out! ☺️ Hope it helps!

LOVE how much time I get with students now that I am really using blended learning effectively. I know them better than I EVER did before. #masterychat

A6: When students work at their own pace they take ownership of the learning process. It leads to consistent metacognition. I would really like to add more reflection opportunities throughout the students learning experience #MasteryChat
A6: I could definitely work on improving the pathways students can take to take charge of their learning. Sometimes I still get in a rut of just one pathway for all. Getting their ideas may also improve engagement #masterychat
A6 - my Ss need to utilize/continue to learn time management. If I were to do “just one more” thing it would be a time management workshop. #masterychat
Q6 Education is like pumping iron - the more purposeful reps you take, the stronger you become! Think about doing "just one more". What is just one more way you could use time, place, path, or pace to help students take charge of their learning? #MasteryChat
A6: This is something I'd also like to find more ways to do. I've done something like this with my summative assessment for lit analysis of a novel, but I know there has to be more out there . . . #MasteryChat
A6: Increasing student choice by providing multiple paths to mastery. It all depends on their individual needs and personal interests. Tailoring instruction with embedded differentiation and a variety of materials. #masterychat
A6 My students are all special needs and need that extra practice of a skill to master new learning. Sometimes it's tricky to provide that extra practice in engaging ways. #masterychat
Q5: ...continued...maybe even use a prompt like #inquirymath and have students brainstorm what it means and can type on the google doc and come in with questions about said topic. i.e. MMMR #masterychat
A6 I am hoping to be able to step back and really dive into the @thegridmethod to allow my students to move at their pace towards mastery. #MasteryChat
Yes! Sometimes you just have to go. You may fail epically, but then you have something to learn from! And what a great opportunity to tell kids, "Yes, I fail too. Now, here is what we do next to LEARN!" #masterychat
Always time: my perception of what we have and the students perception of what they have. We sometimes forget they are just learning to manage it...#masterychat
A3: Flexible searing all the way! Change up the traditional mindset of compliance and take the risk every child deserves! Empower them to be in charge of their learning in all settings! # Nan3EDU #masterychat
A6 I can provide my students more ways to access the information. Videos are great, articles are great, games are great! I just need to find some more to find ways that get all of my kids excited and learning in ways that allow them to choose their path #MasteryChat
A6 I’m very lucky to work in a district that embraces student centered learning and we have great @IDECorp consultants to help us grow. I’m trying to give Ss more and more freedom and blur the lines of subject blocks and make our day one big block of learning #MasteryChat
Yes! Sometimes you just have to go. You may fail epically, but then you have something to learn from! And what a great opportunity to tell kids, "Yes, I fail too. Now, here is what we do next to LEARN!" #masterychat
A6: Whatever the exercise that blended learning supports, the guiding question should always be, "Does this activity EMPOWER our students?" If not, trash the exercise since it'll be wasted energy. #MasteryChat
A4: Now that I teach online, the issues are “flipped” from my classroom teaching. My challenge currently is:How do I connect online learning to real life? How do I motivate students to set long term and short term goals. How do I make learning relevant & worthwhile? #masterychat
Q4 Sometimes we want to try something new, but something is standing in our way. What barriers have you run into when incorporating blended learning and how did you manage to get around them? #MasteryChat
A4:I think sometimes we are our own worst enemies. In my 23rd year, I've implemented more technology, learned more about student choice in assessment and pushed the envelope with what ALL students need for optimal learning. I'm exhausted but we're having FUN! #MasteryChat
A6: LISTEN TO YOUR Ss! They set the stage you simply have to be the supportive crew that tweaks and maneuvers! Ss can and will exceed your expectations. Always! #MasteryChat#Nan3EDU
I share the sentiments of gratitude. I wouldn’t be able to accomplish what I do in my classroom without the support my husband provides and the love from my kids! #masterychat
A6: I can flip my classroom. #FlippedLearning will definitely optimize the learning. It will give me more time to clear up misconceptions. #masterychat
A6: I think of "just one more" in the frame up "up one notch". If I try something (think toe water),That can't be the end. It's always looking at "what if". Improvement every time! BTW, it can be a real challenge when you decide to start off with a cannonball! #masterychat
A5: Flip that lesson folks!Lesson material availability outside the school day is valuable! Not only does it provide for time, path, pace, and place, but it also frees up SO much time to provide appropriate Ss rigor and develop content creation. #MasteryChat
Yes! I’ve taught many a student (and teacher) how to use the Google Suite. Now that I know about the #EDUProtocols, I want to work to streamline those lessons into more efficient projects. Once the kids understand the tech, they tend to fly! #MasteryChat
Yes, I've been teaching 20 years and I look forward to Monday more now than I ever have and it's because I'm taking more risks in the classroom and trying new things #engagement works both ways! #MasteryChat
A3: Flexible searing all the way! Change up the traditional mindset of compliance and take the risk every child deserves! Empower them to be in charge of their learning in all settings! # Nan3EDU #masterychat
Blended Learning: is it individualized? Is feedback immediate? Does it fill gaps? If so students will be successful! If not find ways to ensure we can answer those questions #BlInAction#MasteryChat#BlendedLearning
A7 - @techieteachott is a great resource for me for new blended tools and I'm so glad to have her as colleague. Talking through ideas with @raehughart and @jeffgargas on @thegridmethod team is also a huge part of my reflection as an educator / trainer / consultant #masterychat
A7: Some of my coworkers have completely integrated flipped learning styles in their classroom that I want to try! We do have a 1:1 program. #masterychat
A7: I have an awesome friend and colleague who is always up to trying new ways to engage students. Seeking out PLN connections and bringing ideas into school everyday! Never. Get. Stale. #masterychat
Q7: I need more ts that I can bounce ideas off of! Probably Twitter is my best resource! I’m a T that will try anything & everything, many that I know are too scared. Lol #masterychat#blendedlearning
I am lucky to have a brilliant, generous #aplitchat and #aplangchat PLN who support and give me ideas daily. and now I've found you wonderful folks! #MasteryChat
A6 I think path is one I could be stronger in. Pace is taken care of with @thegridmetho. Time and place are pretty inflexible for me as I see students for just 1 hour a week and cannot assign out of class work. But path? I can work on that one! #masterychat
A7: Building an international summer #PLN focused on redesigning classroom culture and plan to bounce ideas off all involved. Would love more to join!!

#MasteryChat A7. In school, presenting the idea out at PLCs and many colleagues already have projects going with their students..Buddy up there? Cross-grade would be cool
That's just one of the wonderful things about Twitter - all of these amazing examples of positive, innovative, human educators trying new things and sharing ideas freely #masterychat
A7: It’s weird, I am one of the oldest teachers in my school, but the one talking others into getting on Twitter. I am slowly building my tribe. #masterychat
A7: I want to work in creating more rigorous paths to learning. I want improve the planning stages that lead to more real-world integration of state requirements. They don’t tend to be user friendly. #MasteryChat
So important, always have and cultivate mentors. Know who does this stuff, do you trust them? Respect them? Good they are a great resource! #masterychat#theteachersjourney

A7 without a doubt, I can bounce anything off of my team, my tech person( who's always shooting us ideas), my cohort from my school days, previous coworkers, and even people on my Twitter PLN. I'm a lucky person to have such a support group! #MasteryChat
A7: if I could get anyone to buddy up with to work more on blended learning it would be @shanna_stevens she is the one who is willing to go above and beyhound to support students. #masterychat
Thanks #masterychat for another great chat! Can’t help but want to@share my excitement about #theteachersjourney which is available for preorder now! https://t.co/SCRJ0oGpsC’s+journey+Brian+costello&dpPl=1&dpID=51qpQ5iXrcL&ref=plSrch
Deal.
But I am not so good at the yelling. My team calls me "Mama-Tiff" so I am generally more likely to give hugs. Lots of hugs. :)
I'll work on the drill sergeant role! #masterychat
I always look to students first - they're with me everyday and are pretty honest. Then I try to get my specialists since they can connect me with other people around the county. #masterychat
