#5thchat is for people interested in chatting about topics in education, especially as they relate to Grade 5. The goal is to connect people who enjoy learning & sharing, plus supporting & creating partnerships worldwide!
Hi! I'm a sophomore college student doing some student teaching and hoping to be a middle school educator when I graduate! I have seen my mentor teachers use iPads, computers, and SMART boards in the classroom #5thchat
Good evening! Abbeigh George teaching 1st grade in Jonesboro, Arkansas here! We have a class set of chrome books, a SmartBoard, iPads and a document camera in my classroom! #5thchat
A1: I think I am the instructional Tech support for my school. I am the goto for troubleshooting and programs. I am supported by my Twitter PLN's for new programs and tips and tricks #5thchat
A1 - Our school has a half-time Instructional Tech support person (she's full-time but shared between two buildings). She schedules events like "Hour of Code," works with kids, passes on information to teachers & is willing to help in any way. #5thchat
Our computer lab teacher is such a strong support and encourager! She is constantly offering her services to our teachers to aid in the use of new technology and programs! I do my part as a guinea pig always willing to try new things and share them with our staff! #5thchat
Q1 #5thchat we also do a good job as a building with helping each other with tech struggles. Typically at least one person knows how to do something that someone else has a question about
Q2: my students LOVE Google Drawings! We recently explored their ability with this program and they haven’t stopped talking about it yet. They’re eager to get back to making posters and digital artwork after Christmas Break! #5thchat
Google Classroom is a huge help! With offering resources to students just a click away or giving assessments that can be graded for you, it makes a teachers life much easier and a students life more interactive. #5thchat
A2: Dropbox is an amazing resource for students as it provides cloud storage and file synchronization without needing to go through email to login like the Google drive https://t.co/oNpxGphAiS#5thchat
A1 For broken things we have helpdesk tickets and a dedicated team to respond. The tech coaches, media specialists, and I co-teach and provide #personalizedpd for staff! #5thchat
A3: Well, the same one I said before...Google Classroom. Sorry I feel I'm not original but it has radically changed the way I run my classroom #5thchat
Q3: GOOGLE CALENDAR. I absolutely could not function without the capability to combine ALL of my active calendars together. Seeing my work items and personal items on a calendar that updates in real time CANNOT be topped. 👍🏼👍🏼 #5thchat
A3: I started taking our leveled readers and letting the students choose whichc one they want to read with a partner. Then we do a read and roll Get voice and choice this is one of my @flipgridhttps://t.co/IgJt5DIv5B#5thchat
Q4: There’s nothing like all the Google Suite programs that allow students to collaborate in real time regardless of whether they are at home on their couch or they’re on a cruise ship in Mexico! #5thchat
The badges are for the staff, yes. Every 20 points gets you a "prize." From an extra planning time to a t-shirt. You make your choice each time! #5thchat
A4 #edtech collaboration tools done well means students don't have to have their parents drive them across town at a specific time to work on a group project - they can meet from anywhere and work together seamlessly! #5thchat
A4: Allows them to work on same doc at same time, share ideas and resources with G Classroom and Team Drives - helping out others with tips and how to's #5thchat
A4: Technology (apps) have so many collaborative features...love the Google Apps for that, where kids can work on 1 project together, providing feedback to each other, allowing peer editing. Padlet is a great collaborative presentation tool besides Google Slides #5thchat
A4 Students can use google keep to develop goals and timelines to complete projects. They can share their list with each other. Teaches them time management and responsibility. #5thchat
Q5 How do students use technology to make their learning more “real world” (e.g. connecting with experts, authentic audience, solving real world problems, etc.)? #5thchat
Q5 How do students use technology to make their learning more “real world” (e.g. connecting with experts, authentic audience, solving real world problems, etc.)? #5thchat
The name of my school is International Studies, lending itself to exactly what we do- study the 7 continents! Technology plays such a crucial role in allowing the students to feel like they’re truly experiencing the culture they’re studying by connecting to natives! #5thchat
A5: My students are all taught content/skills through problem-based learning. We use tech to design solutions to authentic problems...designing therapeutic toys, orthotic devices, or interactive displays they program. #5thchat
A5: I completely agree. Our students don't get to experience many things outside of school and virtual field trips really help with exposing students to things they wouldn't otherwise ever see. #5thchat
A1: in the classrooms I've student taught in, I notice that a lot of teachers share ideas, too, when a teacher may be confused about how to present a topic through a certain tech app #5thchat
We have to do certain tasks in order to get points. After so many points, you get an award that you choose. It's pretty great and helps me get outside my bubble! #5thchat
A5 Working w/ @MichaelPortas to try to put the pieces together so our homebound Ss can participate in class via telepresence... Real world problem we couldn't solve well w/o #edtech! #5thchat
A4: Tech helps each student to have a voice! I know there are too many kids that are scared to raise their hand so giving them a voice on tech helps! #5thchat
A6 Padlet and Flipgrid have been a quick way to allow students reflection in my room. Really easy to review and nice to hear from everyone in the class. I have about 30 in each class so it has really helped me get to know my students. #5thchat
Barging in late.
A6 The recording abilities of #edtech tools (iPads) and the curation ability of Drive allows Ss to easily reflect on progress and discuss next steps. #GeniusHour or other larger projects allow us to see trajectory of lrng & explanation of intention. #5thchat
A5: My professors have encouraged me to use Twitter as a way to make what I'm learning at college to become a teacher in the "real world" like connecting with experienced teachers and hearing their advice #5thchat
A6: I have my students keep track of their scores for assignments. Each time we record something we can reflect on our scores and set goals from there. #5thchat
My elem Ss explored a few tools to help support their lit groups. A few groups chose Padlet and have enjoyed capturing their reflections of their reading and the out-of-class conversations. #5thchat#edtech
Q6: I have recently found a ton of resources on Alice Keeler's website. one of which is a pseudo discussion board in Google Sheets. There are many different options for reflection and discussion. out there Peer review is very effective. @alicekeeler#5thchat
Q6: The collaboration that technology allows for creates such a reflective environment. Students can give feedback regarding classmates’ goals and work allowing the creator to see different perspectives and become more open to constructive criticism. #5thchat
As an adjunct, it was an expectation of all my PSTs to engage in twitter chats. The platform is a 24/7 resource library and allows edus to make meaningful connections that improves our work in classrooms. #ConnectED#5thchat
I would have to agree. FlipGrid is very cool! My students love recording themselves! Both are quick ways to quickly assess and see who is participating. #5thchat
Q6: Also I believe that commenting on google docs/sheets/slides in real time is a great way for students to reflect and receive feedback from the T. #5thchat
A7: Designing lessons around authentic problems helps with this...providing students the opportunity of choices helps them take ownership on what they're learning about #5thchat
A7 Setting the norm from the beginning. Their opinion matters because the classroom is their workspace too, from layout to book selections. Provide choice! Morning Meeting is a great venue as are Dialogue Journals, class tweets, & blog to hear #StuVoice. #5thchat
A7 Frequent formative assessment will help you guide the lesson, but ask the students first what they like! You'd be amazed by how you can teach the content to fit within the context of something students find interesting! #tlap#5thchat
A7: This is what we need to accomplish. How do you want to get there? And then have students fill out a google form, online discussion board, hangouts with their responses. #5thchat
A7: Anytime we have to make a decision as a class, I have them vote in a Google Form! This way, I can show them the results and they can see that they made the decision, not just me. #5thchat
#5thchat A7: Ask them for feedback, whether out loud, on paper, etc. What works well for them, what doesn't. What they like about a lesson and what was hard to understand and why.
A4: Allows then to work on the same projects, share ideas, set tasks for each other and so much more! My students love being able to communicate about stuff even when they aren’t in my room! #5thchat
A8: In past, Arkansas Community Foundation SIMS grants were easy to get for $500. Middle school science teachers. Wal-mart grants too! And there's always Donors Choose #5thchat
Q7: Technology itself aids with this. Technology allows such opportunity for students that far transcends the boundaries of what can be done by hand. Allowing such choice and such openness in creativity gives students the drive needed to truly care about their product. #5thchat
Thanks so much to @agoodin1 for moderating an awesome "Tech Throwdown" #5thchat this evening!
Please join us next week as @MsGoodeEllis moderates with the TOPIC: "Growth Mindset!"
A5: Students have the opportunity to meet and discuss with people around the world without leaving their seat...Skype, virtual reality trips, google hangouts! Connecting to the real world! #5thchat
