Good evening! Welcome to for 4/13! We'll be discussing how to choose the best device for you. Join us! https://t.co/fprmqjH0zD
Plz introduce yourself, where you're from, how 1:1 fits into your teaching, and name your favorite https://t.co/v4Ujtkr1fZ
Good evening & PLN.
Michael, HS Principal, RI
Jonathan, Library & Inst Tech Spec at in Maine. I co-org with my man & Prez Elect of . 1:1 iPad 5-12
I couldn't find that image
Rob from Dallas. 8th grade English in 1:1 iPad program at St. John's Episcopal School
Nick, HS Math Teacher, MN, 1st year 1:1 Chromebook Flips
Good Evening - Sean from Orland Pk Il. 2nd yr 1:1 Getting closer & closer to becoming "invisible". Great integration by our Ts
kyle - network admin from philly. google enthusiast! i will try to keep my bias in check tonight
I don't want to skew responses so I won't say negative things too early
a1: BYOD because gafe and the web make the type of device pointless.
A1: I'd choose iPads b/c they promote and enable creativity for Ss to share what they've learned.
A1: IPad b/c of its portability, app capabilities and ease of use
A1 iPhone- would make us totally rethink mobility in learning. I mean how many have laptops/tablets yet are still tied to desks?
A1: In my classroom, I might prefer using an iPad, since they would allow for more opportunities to create, share & apps
Do BYOD folks have minimum requirements for operating systems/software/hardware?
How does that translate to the classroom T with minimal tech knowledge? Who troubleshoots multiple devices?
as long as they can get on the wifi, the web just works. what other troubleshooting is there?
Great question! What say you BYOD people? https://t.co/BJUbqNgkz9
Do BYOD folks have minimum requirements for operating systems/software/hardware?
A1 internet enabled device ..... It gets on the Internet
7 inch screen size with ability to annotate and take photos and use
A1: iPad pro w/ keyboard...does 90% of what I need laptop to do w/ writing capabilities via the pencil & other camera functions.
Guess I'm thinking hardware issues, and for some schools going from 0 to 1:1, do Ts limit Ss to only web based tools?
it needs to be a fairly current device
what if Ss have slow processing devices...lag time etc
as long as it can be shared via GAFE in the classroom - kids can create with whatever tool they have access too.
I have BYOD, but Ss know what it is we are doing so device needs to be appropriate for task. Most choose phone if they can.
Q2: I would prefer walking on hot coals to having to use _________ for my 1:1 program because __________ https://t.co/6B8liCh6HF
what a great time to learn how to fix your own computer problems!
These are 2 musts. What else do we NEED?
In my perfect world, I would have whatever device the learner wants. BYOT helps with that.
q2: kindles because they aren't a scalable 1:1 device.
i'm being nice as this question could get me in trouble
A2: would rather walk on hot coals than use IE or Word.
NEED? the ability for Ss to have the choice in how they share their learning so device doesn't matter
Agreed, but does it scare Ts away from using tech if they don't know what they're facing?
yes, but what if it is antiquated and can't be upgraded?
there's always going to problems. even if all the devices are the same. some kid will have a wonky device
NEED adequate device too share.
A2 don't know. I like all devices
Great point - keep the flexibility with how Ss share their learning.
A2; Anything that does not have the capability for students to write on a touch screen, many math symbols are able to be typed
Ts scared even w/ training. Creatures of habit, both good and bad!
A2 If phones were the only options I think Ss would be limited but using it as a Ss +one makes sense https://t.co/fCf1S4Tknw
Q2: I would prefer walking on hot coals to having to use _________ for my 1:1 program because __________ https://t.co/6B8liCh6HF
Right but if we see an issue with a device we can prep Ts & Ss and avoid wasted classroom time.
That's why we not only need good PD, but we need ongoing support & Ts who are willing to collaborate and grow.
agreed but some Ts seem to be all set w/ continuing edtech PD.
Hey . Coming in late for the conversations. I need to get some grading done. Shai from PA. Will search for the Qs.
Q3: If you're trying to [activity] with your Ss, your best option is to use [device] because [rationale] https://t.co/f5xvK88Bpa
some devices *cough* chromebooks *cough* are easier to fix than other devices making troubleshooting easy.
Math is a struggle on tech. Even touch screen. I lean more and more toward more paper & physical world.
do your Ts next have tech integration expectations from school?
My students use Chromebooks in my math classes, and have adapted. I use the and .
a3: video recording, use a tablet or smartphone because of the portability.
We use our iPads & ebackpack for workflow and Evernote for dig portfolios, so yes.
Good evening my name is Nicole and I am studying education.
Different perceptions based on $$$ where devices are provided by school vs. Ss/Ps purchasing the device?
A1: In a perfect world, I would probably choose some type of touch screen tablet or laptop.
We don't have anything written, but hoping to have Individual Learning Plans in place soon
a3: write a 10 page paper, a laptop will be better than tablet or smartphone because of the screen and keyboard size & software
it is expected but varies from ES/MS/HS for us. But Ts can't just say "no"
I like doing the research, videos, simulations, screencasts, etc... on device & practice on paper.
My Ss easily create multi-media projects w/ their iPads. I too enjoy creating w/ them.
I'm at a private school-it's byot required. Ps seem to expect more voice in device choice in our situation-Is this norm?
I now have a new best friend - is by far the best educational app. So flexible.
Ilike as well, for making quick videos for students.
we are byoipad. students are bringing in laptops to supplement.
school to school or district wide curriculum support?
Great app, wish there was something similar for Chromebooks.
when we announced we'd use iPads only, we got some pushback for lack of choice. Glad we did iPads though
Q4: When I want to [activity] with Ss, it doesn't matter what 1:1 device I use because [explanation] https://t.co/QU4zvQqk03
I thought they were going that way. Reach out to them.
yep. some Ss never even bought the ipad. Ss and Ps weren't loving the decision to begin with
A2: Not sure about this one. Kindles and Nooks probably wouldn't work well in a math classroom.
well that makes for hard integration!
ding! you are correct! we are in our 2nd yr of it. quieter this year, but more laptops this yr than last
lack of tech pd hurts integration too
hence your jumping in on last nights ;)
A4: Use with my Ss because is works on any device. Same with my videos.
do you have tech coaches?
Absolutely! You can't just hand devices to Ss and Ts and expect good thing to happen w/out PD.
we have one ft one for lower school and 2 pt for middle and upper school
I'm not seeing questions - can someone retweet 3 and 4
For some, yes, but not for most. It would be used as a word processor and not much more.
without tech PD, it can negatively affect the use of any device in the classroom for learning
I fell way behind - trying to do this on phone - another reason to have at least a 7" screen.
Q5: A 1:1 program using [device] would benefit enormously from exploring [concept/technique/ideas/PD] https://t.co/xi2xs9Nf8H
without discussions with Ts, Ss, and Ps it can negatively affect device use in classroom
and it is a no win situation for your tech coaches
We went 1:1 two weeks ago. But it was from 2:1, so not a huge transition for our teachers.
that's why we don't get a lot of customers asking for tech integration help.
A5: Honestly, CBs are good for almost anything, (accept durability) so I really am not sure.
I do understand that! No worries
Agreed. You'll have some Ts w/ success b/c they take risks & have growth mindset
Why that screen getting harder and harder to read? Not age or anything is it?
I'm biased since I am one- but right now I think they are necessity as Ts grow skills
Did you get them? I just search Q? and it comes up.
Private school w/ bring your own iPads.
some are a lot more durable than others.
would love if there was notablilty for our chromebooks,
Nope. I just need longer arms and/or new glasses. Time machine would be nice too.
I am pretty knowledgeable with tech, but still need my tech coaches!
...or even android. there are other annotation tools for chromebooks, but notability is great
LOL. Has NOTHING to do with age, then! LOL!
The most important part of 1:1 is PD. If teachers aren't on-board, they won't use it.
I really like the new Yoga's (?) touch screen CB. Hoping we go to those.
A4 my fav is edcamp style Pd where Ts can choose what best meets their needs for tech growth
the acer and asus convertibles are nice too.
Check out the . I love it. If you have ?s about it, please ask. Great tool.
Touchscreen Chromebooks could be real game changer in choosing devices.
I have a chromebook flip and could see touch being useful for students, but I rarely use it myself.
A5 empower. It takes a bit to convince Ts to grow themselves because used to sit and get. Empower lifelong learners
Any of those would be awesome. I was disappointed we got CB, but actually, they are meeting mine and my Ss needs.
RT : this is quite true. Touchscreen Chromebooks could be real game changer in choosing devices.
true most important part of 1:1 is student control, with PD to support Instructional Tolerance https://t.co/MOJArUVLGc
i'm using a pixel right now and i rarely touch the screen.
I agree, and they are still much cheaper than an ipad.
We have been using touchscreen Chromebooks, need to catch up to the apps of iPad
We're doing EdCamp style PD for the 1st time next week. Very excited about it and getting good feedback from Ts
and they can do the desktop web
chrome OS doesn't integrate touch interface well, but it's improved and I'm sure it will continue to improve
and not just PD, but PD where Ts get choice and take ownership.
Q6: I have / I know someone who has switched allegiance from [device] to [another device] because... https://t.co/8TDLwdDGly
A6 not as vocally as I wished but im probably hyper passionate about edcamp opportunities
& the mobile web needs to catch up to the desktop. no access to google add-ons on mobile devices.
My HS admin have offered us "sure shots" choices every meeting this year. Ts get to pick from a menu.
Only a matter of time. Apple def took control & lead with App Store and popularity of devices
Our Ss have Chromebook flips, not many Ts know enough to make impactful yet
RT : Ownership is what they need, not just PD, but PD where Ts get choice and take ownership.
a6: switched from chromebooks to ipads because...
A6: I switched allegiance from PC to Mac 20 about 15 years ago because I found Mac had fewer viruses. Does that count?
there are more web developers than app developers. app store has a long way to go to catch up
A6: Again, though, wasn't a fan of CB until this past year. I thought the kids would be held back, but they haven't been.
Never understood why Admin think Ss need CBs for HS Need keyboards Why?
That's going to change, don't you think? Was just talking to some Ss today about that.
apple's os's are some of the most vulnerable software out there. be careful
I do understand that, but when I had a PC laptop, weekly I had viruses on it. Not so with my Mac. Security is an issue.
im told because typing papers more seamless with MLA FORMAT
it's cheaper to program for all devices with the web than developing ios or android app.
A6: Still like my PC, but enjoy my Apple devices
Is it? That's one area I know nothing about.
10 years ago that was true. today, not so much.
What advice/ideas can you take away from tonight's chat that you can put in place TOMORROW to improve your practice?
This has been a very lively and interesting chat. Love the input & resources from so many passionate educators
we have 2 Instructional coaches at every site. Some have technology training background. Some don't. :(
Sean are you not liking keyboards?
Agreed. The web apps are ready to explode in the near future.
it can be expensive in time and money to create an app.
Not sure why MLA is so used in HS. College uses APA
and cross platform meets varied needs
Agreed. Many Ts need to change pedagogy to make it really work.
I am thinking about starting a club for girls around coding, and app making.
It would be beneficial to have a tech person who is also a teacher
i just read that google is developing web based usb access.
depends on the major but YES! Seems to be a hang up- let's just teach basics and GO
My grad class is using APA and I know nothing about it. I know MLA.
great point. We have that discussion a lot.
