Interested in student-driven classrooms? Join Dr. Nancy Sulla @nsulla (author of Students Taking Charge, Its Not What You Teach But How, Building Executive Function: The Missing Link to Student Achievement, and more) and educators from all over in #LATICchat on Thursday nights at 8pm ET. We hope to bring together a community of educators to share insights, stories, examples, pictures from their classrooms, and more. We welcome all educators to join; no need to be running a #LATIC classroom.
Well @nsulla has to head over to the #LATICchat now, but thanks everyone for joining us on the #EOEchat! Move over to her #LATICchat now for a double header. đAnd stay tuned next week for an #EOEchat slow chat style, so we can get more in depth about building #executivefunction
Giving students the freedom to choose how they approach learning may lead them to pick âfunâ stuff that doesnât work for them but building EF will lead to independence and a can-do attitude #LATICchat
A1: EF does not happen by accident. We have to create the conditions to build these critical life skills in students. Do or do not. There is no try! #LATICchat
A1) EF skills of working toward a goal, persisting in a task, catching and correcting errors, and managing time will help. TOMORROW ... share the quote and these skills with your students. May the Fourth Be With You! #LATICchat
Q2- Droids, computers ⊠how can you engage students in activities that only they can do (not computers), based on their executive function? #LATICchat
A1 #laticchat in this instance Yoda is actually reminding me of another wise thinker Caleb Gattegno. Only awareness is educable in human beings. On the path to learning, several awarenesses must be reached.

Fostering EF is Ss means giving them choice in what they can do and providing them with opportunities to solve authentic problems. A rubric keeps them in the âdoingâ mode! #LATICchat
Q2- I think it takes kids wanting to âshow offâ what they know and do well. For me, allowing them some individuality using #thinkingmaps and their INBs has helped. Also, allowing them to create classroom tools like how-to sheets and posters #LATICchat
Q3 - How can teachers ensure they see their students for who they really are and not judge them incorrectly for their lack of executive function skills?

A2 #laticchat having S's create original work. Letting S's create a vision they own. Go beyond what is google-able and it never hurts to bring out good ole fashion markers, crayons and glue once in a while. Letting kids play is also helpful for this.
A3: one of the reasons I love LATIC is because I have several opportunities to interact with my Ss on an individual basis & get to know their strengths and areas for growth. #LATICchat
A2 #LATICchat I love it when my students come back from the library with books that are related to their ALU. It's so much fun seeing them make connections and really taken interest. Especially when they can do Hands-On activities and see their ideas come to life.
A4- growth mindset strikes again! Lol Also, show them YOU believe in them when theyâre having a hard time doing it for themselves. Find their strength and empower it! #LATICchat
#LATICchat Q3 as a teacher I think it is part of our job to understand that every child is different. Which is why I feel that LATIC is so important. It allows students to demonstrate their abilities in their own ways. They can still plan but their plan might look differently.
A4: try to be supportive when I see they are afraid to try something new. And share my own stories of when I had to venture into new territory (and of the regrets I have when I was too afraid to take the journey) #LATICchat
A3 #LATICchat one structure I have reflected on with @ShaneJohnsonIDE and @IDEchristina to help facilitate with building this executive function skill set is the student learning dashboard.
A3 i think this goes into cultural diversity competence. My former principal used to say: "parents send the best children they have" You will be. You⊠will⊠be. #LATICchat
Q4: we spend a lot of time discussing #grit. Students search up a quote that touches their heart and motivates them. They illustrate it on a kite and we hang them in the room to look at when they are feeling like things are hard. #LATICchat
CQ - Jedi Teachers Anticipate! What do you anticipate you need to do to rock your classroom to new heights? What will you now do to make that happen! #LATICchat

CA- I have to up the ante on my facilitation! I saw an awesome strategy for this at Chester Taylor today and I think it will surely make us an even better LATI class #LATICchat
Chester Taylor School rocks! They're all in ... every teacher ... attending consecutive summers of training; working hard w/ their coaches throughout the year; working in their PLCs; reflecting, reflecting, reflecting! #awesomeness@CWTESPrincipal@pascoschools#LATICchat
CQ: In order to take my classroom to the next level I want to spend time curriculum mapping. Seeing where my current ALUs can be infused with different curriculum areas and planning new ones I want to do next year! @StarfishEmily, weâre doing this tomm! đ #LATICchat
