I bleed green and white! Everyday is a great day to be a Spartan!
We will use the usual Q1: for the first question then post A1: for your answer to keep the chat organized.
Q1: After watching Dr. Wagner’s intro to concept of Deeper Learning does it scare you or excite you?
Is that a teletubbie In the background?
add to post to the chat. :) You've got this.
no, it is a rubber bouncy horse that is the most popular toy at our house. Odd but kids love it!
A1. Exciting. We need more options for students but this description is not for all students, although K-16 could take a lesson
Good perspective- Good to increase individual learning options but it may not be for all students. https://t.co/Vrpyg6OTj4

Sorry Wendy. I have it bookmarked to watch tomorrow. First day of Spring Sports today kept me very busy
Q2: How will embracing Deeper Learning (expeditionary learning) require us to re-imagine education?
I'm so busted! No video watching here. Too busy multitasking!
Fair enough! https://t.co/TmgP1eznQr
Sorry Wendy. I have it bookmarked to watch tomorrow. First day of Spring Sports today kept me very busy
A2.P1 Expeditionary learning focus on developing academic mindset, giving Ss problems (mental/physical) to teach how to overcome
A2. Â Hard often to fine "projects" that align with curriculum. Â Have to sometimes abandon and go for it
A2.P2 requires Ts to adapt to multiple ways of solving problems. Let Ss solve problems then report out how they solved it.
Love watching this in action...the modeling work in HS science classrooms is a great example. https://t.co/ffHmsmUnBj
A2.P2 requires Ts to adapt to multiple ways of solving problems. Let Ss solve problems then report out how they solved it.
A2.P3 grade effectiveness of problem solving, stop putting emphasis on right/wrong way.open Ss eyes to potential, not just Ts way
A2: Ts giving up some of the control. While that is something that we are striving for, it is still hard for Ts to do.
A2 Deeper learning builds academic perseverance and can strengthen knowledge
Also difficult for parents who aren't used to the lack of feedback. https://t.co/7vhOvMNr1j
A2: Ts giving up some of the control. While that is something that we are striving for, it is still hard for Ts to do.
Less providing the answer is good! https://t.co/LC9MvpqtPn
A2 Deeper learning builds academic perseverance and can strengthen knowledge
A2. Â Maybe there are steps toward this, like more inquiry based learning
A2: Deeper learning takes away cookie cutter education. Much more individualized pacing.
Nex Gen Science standards r inquiry based. Different instruction but necessary for raising the bar
Q3: Deeper learning requires students to master content knowledge in an applied way…are you seeing emerging practice of this?
is setting the stage for https://t.co/qgx9TJ2uH3

Hey everyone, sorry I'm late was at a board meeting. And Kowalczyk Bay City Central high school
Hi Andy- So that new picture on your account is clearly not you! https://t.co/IRpcukkovn
Hey everyone, sorry I'm late was at a board meeting. And Kowalczyk Bay City Central high school
A3:As a career center AP, I see it everyday!
A3: Applied learning yields higher student engagement and overall student commitment to learning.
A3 It's difficult to balance authentic assessment with the need to expose students to high stakes assessing methods.
A3. PBL, inquiry based learning, problem based learning. Check out Ewan McIntosh and Alan November at https://t.co/MLQz4OOMxz
A3 We are seeing it at BCC in Science and English. A lot of training over the past year for teachers.
Collaboration and buy in to the learning taking place- awesome!!! https://t.co/TAZ1mIpJXd
A3: Applied learning yields higher student engagement and overall student commitment to learning.
That's great. Universally being used or just some teachers? https://t.co/rrb2WQkMnf
A3 We are seeing it at BCC in Science and English. A lot of training over the past year for teachers.
A3. T's have a real fear of this, can't do PBL bc students won't be ready for the 'test'
A3. At High Tech High they have set testing and standards aside because they believe the PBL benefits outweigh test prep
A3:Inquiry based learning also lends itself well to collaboration across disciplines. It's a beautiful thing!
A3. PBL and Inquiry-based both take ton of courage to step out of comfort, and for the Ss too! Ts have to be willing to lead
A3. Control is an isssue. T's are often afraid of inquiry learning bc it doesn't follow a prescribed path
A3: I'm seeing modeling in our science rooms. Students are trying to adjust to their questions being answered with questions.
BAM! So true. https://t.co/H5M5C5HrhD
A3. PBL and Inquiry-based both take ton of courage to step out of comfort, and for the Ss too! Ts have to be willing to lead
I'm interested to know what they are doing! That's so awesome!
We are doing students a disservice if we don't at least try it!
how do we expect Ss to be creative and problem solve if our instruction doesn't match? https://t.co/FmNovw5Nrg
We are doing students a disservice if we don't at least try it!
Q4:Ss are required to communicate effectively in Deeper Learning–often presenting&defending their ideas. Why is this powerful?
So true! We need to revamp our teacher prep programs to prepare Ts to go out and do this!
A4 “We learn more by looking for the answer to a ? and not finding it than we do from learning the answer .” - Lloyd Alexander
A4. Ss have to demonstrate learning not just answer OPQ (Other people's questions) as in a paper pencil test
A4: Communication requires higher level cognitive processing with a purpose. It is from this that passion is born!
It seems very difficult for higher ed to keep pace, we do the training on the job. https://t.co/S6rOrhSLyO
So true! We need to revamp our teacher prep programs to prepare Ts to go out and do this!
A4. defending something means you have to KNOW it, not because Ts or parents say it, but b/c its yours!
BAM! https://t.co/Tpfsykbj21
A4. Ss have to demonstrate learning not just answer OPQ (Other people's questions) as in a paper pencil test
A4: Ss presenting out their mental processing and reasoning locks in learning. Whiteboards are a great way to do this.
A4. Â Ss have to make a case after having and EXPERIENCE that is real
A4 I think s's can hide behind completed worksheets, defending like a lawyer means they understand and know.
A4. defending something requires depth of knowldege. DOK allows Ts to truly assess students comprehension/proficiency/mastery
S's need to be able to explain why, not just give an answer.
Maybe we should work more closely with higher ed-tell them what we need and work with them to make it happen!
A4: I have seen many Ss become interested in school once they have a voice.
BAM! https://t.co/ZDECdmLPTg
Maybe we should work more closely with higher ed-tell them what we need and work with them to make it happen!
A4: S's are able to explain why, not just give a quick answer. Valuable when problem solving.
A4: Making connections occurs within authentic experiences such as defending an idea &/or sharing it.
- Wonder what their lives would be like if they had never lost their voice in the first place.
Yes Higher Ed needs the same kind of focus
Q5:How does Deeper Learning push S to Think Critically & Solve Complex problems differently than what we are see in classrooms?
A5. Ts need to stop stressing about AMOUNT of content covered and start focusing on critical thinking/problem solving
A5. Ts are worried about teaching critical thinking/problem solving b/c they're worried about not covering enough content
A5. Only happens if teachers ask better questions and facilitate Ss to ask their own questions, as in inquiry
Yes Sir! https://t.co/Mo5vjZ1wyu
A5. Ts are worried about teaching critical thinking/problem solving b/c they're worried about not covering enough content
add and you're in! https://t.co/kt8obnUHus
S HAVE to use the universal skills of critical thinking: ask questions, focus on context, analyze resources effectively to learn.

S HAVE to use the universal skills of critical thinking: ask questions, focus on context, analyze resources effectively to learn.
A4: Ss are going 2 b deeply engaged in academic dialogue w/ each other. So Ss more active & T facilitates https://t.co/VvlmE7hRL4

Hi All .. Just popping in and it looks to be a great chat. I'll follow up with the entire storify tomorrow.
A5: It makes learning more about relevancy. Ss are proud of what they r doing & excited to share!
Hi Tracy- Thanks for the visit. https://t.co/k2R9KT80Rn
Hi All .. Just popping in and it looks to be a great chat. I'll follow up with the entire storify tomorrow.
A6 it's difficult to change the practice of teaching wide and shallow when we continue to measure achievement that way
A5: Ss will be more at work learning skills as opposed to memorizing facts. More S to S talk, less at T https://t.co/BNZtJ3vheL
Q5:How does Deeper Learning push S to Think Critically & Solve Complex problems differently than what we are see in classrooms?
Thanks for another great collaborative effort tonight PLN! See you next week.
