Q1- Innovation means giving students the opportunity to reach further beyond what they think they will be able to do.
Thanks! It's been quite a while since I've jumped in on a
Stephanie, Instructional Partner Alabama
Hi, Shanda Seibel from Kansas!
A1- innovation means engaging students using tech, but tech with a purpose! Also out of the box thinking and growth!
A1: Innovation means letting students explore on their own without giving any kind of directions - Ss need to explore 1st
Margie Tyner, Gifted Ed teacher from Alabama
Tech with a purpose for sure!! https://t.co/IsWiXiwkHf
A1- innovation means engaging students using tech, but tech with a purpose! Also out of the box thinking and growth!
A1 Innovation means intellectual curiosity, imaginative play, & taking risks.
Love your emphasis on exploration, Kevin! Can you give an example of how you make this happen? https://t.co/FK5QpNNcDs
A1: Innovation means letting students explore on their own without giving any kind of directions - Ss need to explore 1st
A1: Innovation in classroom is doing something different from the norm, trying something new, challenging the status quo
5th Grade Science Teacher Alabama supporting our awesome moderators!
A1- Innovation to me means stepping outside of norm for the sake of the Ss to really reach them where they're at & should be going
A1- Innovation in the classroom means incorporating tech into lessons in a purposeful way
I love the phrase "intellectual curiosity"! I wonder how your students would describe that?
A1: Innovation is a combination of risk taking, technology, and student-driven learning!
A1:shifting the way the students see the world so they are ready to be the change in the world
1 ex that comes 2 mind is that I let my Ss explore with scratch (coding) - they came up amazing creations! https://t.co/kM3tOIPJGa
Love your emphasis on exploration, Kevin! Can you give an example of how you make this happen? https://t.co/FK5QpNNcDs

Yes! https://t.co/BXx3K6F0Ux
A1: Innovation in classroom is doing something different from the norm, trying something new, challenging the status quo
Exactly! Which we should be doing as teachers, reaching the Ss were they are at! https://t.co/2uLR1gtFIB
A1- Innovation to me means stepping outside of norm for the sake of the Ss to really reach them where they're at & should be going
A1 Can be a number of things: makerspace, PBL, genius hour, or any other current ed buzzword ;)
Sometimes it's messy to step out of the norm.
Yes! Like says Innovation isn't a skill set, it's a mindset!
and we have to get out of the mindset that noise and mess is unproductive!
I agree with purposeful learning!
Love the emphasis of empowering students to be world changers through innovation! powerful! https://t.co/1ZTJ5CQvvr
A1:shifting the way the students see the world so they are ready to be the change in the world
I see a trend of "risk taking" as a definition! Love it! https://t.co/aHrfvKu7Gp
A1: Innovation is a combination of risk taking, technology, and student-driven learning!
HI,Late joining and my first time with the group. Former 5th gr T (12 years) & now tech integrationist.
I'm posting a video - this came with no direction at all - except how to access the site!
A1: Innovation is allowing choice for students to demonstrate understanding in a variety of ways. This leads to autonomy.
Haha! So many buzzwords! Do you think the buzzwords are giving us innovators a bad rap sometimes? https://t.co/HtAYA1pq0z
A1 Can be a number of things: makerspace, PBL, genius hour, or any other current ed buzzword ;)
Innovation means taking risks!!
Absolutely! https://t.co/5Nw7G5TVuf

Heidi Solway, Gr 7/8, London, Ontario Canada.Innovation is providing task options Ss can relate to and find relevant
Innovation is trial and error. Creation and application of conceptual knowledge. It requires creativity and individuality.
I love what they create and they love that I don't have a coding clue!
This phrase was GAMECHANGER for me really "getting it" too!
Possibly, never thought about it that way to be honest! Good ed practice becomes buzz & that's not a bad thing!
- hooked me up with Scratch and I gave it to my Ss and they went with it!
Welcome, Heidi! Agreed, so important learning task options where innovation can truly happen are offered to students!
because we can help kids be creators of things that don't exist and dare them to dream.
A1 Letting students do what they imagine rather than what we Ts expect.
A1: Ss have too much instructional time - they need time to be kids and to explore and make mistakes
so well put! Imagine a world where every educator is imbedding this mindset in their classrooms!
for sure. That risk piece is essential. We take risks, FAIL, reflect, and try again.
Good point! https://t.co/Oax0O4ktdN
Possibly, never thought about it that way to be honest! Good ed practice becomes buzz & that's not a bad thing!
So key that we give Ss time to explore and just be kids!
YES! We've got to find that balance! The both/and of learning and truly give the time to explore! https://t.co/GrsKMU2yeI
A1: Ss have too much instructional time - they need time to be kids and to explore and make mistakes
A2: By using Google Drawing students are creating Google Animations. I'll post an example
This is spot on! That is the only way we can get them ready for jobs that don't exist today!
A2- We're starting Exploration Friday next week (would start this week, but Panda Pals)Ss can explore coding, robots, logic games.
Yes! Please share! https://t.co/HKG8OoQHjK
A2: By using Google Drawing students are creating Google Animations. I'll post an example
How can we do this in a world that is still so deeply tied to standard mastery & test scores? https://t.co/HNoZnvFjHm
A1 Letting students do what they imagine rather than what we Ts expect.
From a Tech Integration side, how do you manage when teachers are afraid to "let go" and let Ss take risks?
exactly. As teachers we must model this. I see it transfor to students all the time. Help fosters growth mindset.
A2: wow, we are always taking risks we have done , , lots of STEM/STEAM
Hi Rachelle! We love latecomers around here! Q2. just got posted!
A2- Currently composing tweets to Scott Kelley about the effects of space on his cells
A2- We are using YouTube videos to learn to make origami and knit in makerspace stations in the media center
A1 Innovation loses power when we lose sight of the WHY behind it. Innovating for the sake of being diff has little learning value
A2: NEXT 9 weeks I am having students write their own and
A2: Using some of their favorite tools such as minecraft, coding, and music videos to demonstrate mastery and apply it to real life
A2: I don't have any examples bc its still a work in progress but Ss are creating travel brochures 4 Treegap from Tuck Everlasting
Exactly what I would like 2 do more! So hard when Ts want to "get through" the basics and see innovation as a "side"
right!? The model for many schools has not shifted or changed. the time is now.
I have had to just jump in this year and try it! I have a great admin/support to help me! https://t.co/pgYquJOhqc
From a Tech Integration side, how do you manage when teachers are afraid to "let go" and let Ss take risks?
A1:Innovation is providing opportunity for Ss to develop skills. Using social media, , problem solving
Trying to live by "go slow to go fast" mentality. Celebrating small wins. culture of learning fm mistakes https://t.co/ZwHyXS3Wya
From a Tech Integration side, how do you manage when teachers are afraid to "let go" and let Ss take risks?
A2) We've been working away in doing screencasts of math problems utilizing Seesaw. Partnering. Not that innovative.
The model won't change until we make it change! Ts stepping out of the box and making change.
Isn't social media within classroom awesome. Started a class account this year
https://t.co/CI73YbT6tp
A1:Innovation is providing opportunity for Ss to develop skills. Using social media, , problem solving
Would love to have a few teachers who would do just that! That's me! But the rest... not so much.
Love this idea! Just heard ab a teacher doing something similar in my district today! https://t.co/gzkOQDmeLx
A2: NEXT 9 weeks I am having students write their own and
willingness to try something different, promote questioning, and opportunities for creativity
let's make our voices heard. Transfer the passion from Twitter/PLN to model power for others.
Yes! Always have to start with the WHY. https://t.co/JpPNDXWluS

I love this approach of Ss figuring it out themselves! big on that w/ tech tools!
Keep at it! Don't give up! You will light a fire with someone and it will grow and grow! https://t.co/zPqlWDTLwn
Would love to have a few teachers who would do just that! That's me! But the rest... not so much.
Yes! We are trying to do this w/ small innovation teams of Ts who are modeling for us & creating the path! https://t.co/jgd3151Wvg
it's time for action and creating that culture shift in our buldings
They won't always have someone their with the Answers. We need to foster curiosity and problem solving.
I agree but sometimes it is neat to see them figure out the why.
A2: Recording Ss reading fav pic books in schl library, link audio files to QR codes. Custom listen to reading + fluency practice
yes! I get, "I got this Mr. F" a lot
A2: Me innovative- P/T conf will be a "coffee chat". No academics only life goals of Ss,their strengths/ growth as people
think that's the best path. Small, grassroots development works best, IMHO.
I love that my like minded person is right next door

Jordan from Princeton NJ checking in late...what's up, ?
Learning = Change gives example of Blockbuster waiting to late to change.
Question 3 coming at you!
A2: Ss innovative - starting "writer's exercises" next wk. Find an anthropomorphic object, take its pic, write its story
create an assignment in Google Form and then use Flubaroo to grade it - it gives AMAZING feedback!
Question 3: How do you add innovation opportunities to your project-based learning lessons? https://t.co/zC3wqZZTPK
Agreed! But I always begin innovation w/learning outcome in mind. I don't always tell THEM ahead of time
Zach in Joplin, MO, joining late after daughter's CF treatment went long.
if teachers are not constant learners, we are doing our students a great disservice.
We just did a PBL on how scientists study planets. Ss were given freedom to choose how they showed what they learned.
Hey, Jordan! Just posted Q3! Would love for you to jump on in! https://t.co/0Fk6Fs1dip
Jordan from Princeton NJ checking in late...what's up, ?

Agreed! But I always begin innovation w/learning outcome in mind. I don't always tell THEM ahead of time
A3: This year I learned not too be as strict with the final product. I've learned to let go and let the Ss explore and create
Teachers are the lead learners in their classrooms and admin the lead learners in the building.
Yes! Let's make this happen! https://t.co/ZbPsi6U3bU
this is great! I want "coffee chats" with Ss. Find out what makes them tick. What do they need? Key to engagement!
A3- Letting Ss bring in supplies to make our PBL pizzas this week. Encouraging them to be creative!
A3: Ss have a checklist to assess themselves throughout process which they create "proof" of their choice to show mastery
I would love to hear Ss reflections on how that freedom to choose made them feel. More powerful than we know.
Just left school at 6:30, setting up coding in Kahn Academy and inputting grades! Lots of great ideas here!
and admin should be present and visable around the building interacting with Ss, both academically and socially.
A3- My Ss and I also created a rubric together for our project. Powerful to hear what they had to say.
Hard one for me too, Kevin! Sometimes I let my innovative hopes & dreams get in the way of theirs! https://t.co/9h6y7sKcnv

LOVE this idea, Michelle. So important to empower them to own their assessment throughout the process. https://t.co/0KQRbOkAkq
A3: Ss have a checklist to assess themselves throughout process which they create "proof" of their choice to show mastery
I missed question 2. 😞 A3: Ss create tangible artifacts from recycled goods, code an animation or game on Scratch, paint artwork
Q3 True PBL is innovating and S centered or it's actually something else.
A3 -Innovation opportunities should be planned around outcome of PBL & should serve as a tool to S learning
Good point! Hard for a type A teacher! ;-) https://t.co/sqgQbuPNl7
A3: This year I learned not too be as strict with the final product. I've learned to let go and let the Ss explore and create

Let's just have school at the coffee shop ;-)
Can you tell me a little more about this, Carrie? https://t.co/98WN42g3Aj
Q3 True PBL is innovating and S centered or it's actually something else.
very true! Once I see my Ss having fun and helping each other - I know I'm making the right call
A3- By giving them time and freedom. Establishing a learning target, and letting them show that they have it however they choose.
of understanding is met & expectations are met, their creativity needs to be theirs w/o much critique IMO.
we are doing a box design last 9 weeks and using excited to see what Ss create
So true! Can you imagine the collaborative conversations that would happen?
I am blown away by the first example, Kamilyah! So, so cool! cc: https://t.co/asxJYGzlbr

we are doing a box design last 9 weeks and using excited to see what Ss create
Can you imagine a world where students are creating their own learning targets? https://t.co/hQXMJco6DA
A3- By giving them time and freedom. Establishing a learning target, and letting them show that they have it however they choose.
Honest question: Are "project/problem based learning" and "innovation" synonymous?
A3: In May I am going to let the students guide what we learn. Excited to see where they lead the class
A4: We use a lot with Google but we also use just to name a few
I will send them your way
I don't know that they have to be...
Love this idea! Students co-creating rubric with T! talk ab owning the learning! https://t.co/AT7RhU78xn
A3- My Ss and I also created a rubric together for our project. Powerful to hear what they had to say.
How cool would it be for Ss to want to hang out and chat about learning after 3:05?
Would love to be a fly on the wall for this, Shanda! Maybe & or livestream some of it? https://t.co/um2pVL3hDl
A3: In May I am going to let the students guide what we learn. Excited to see where they lead the class
That's what I'm wondering about after reading others' responses. Can it be called innovation if it's NOT pbl?
A4: I love , , , , and for creation. is also a must.
What if every classroom looked more like our ABC classrooms?
yes great idea! I have great support through and
It definitely is! As frustrating as it can get I know in my heart I'm doing the right thing & thats what keeps me going
This is life - creating learning targets!
140 character response possible for this one? https://t.co/xlcDucvsYD
Honest question: Are "project/problem based learning" and "innovation" synonymous?
This is an important question. , thoughts on this? https://t.co/jsWRTSQqAr
That's what I'm wondering about after reading others' responses. Can it be called innovation if it's NOT pbl?
I would think so, I feel Ss are innovative by trying new presentation tools and sharing with class. https://t.co/QZ9EMnKj5A
That's what I'm wondering about after reading others' responses. Can it be called innovation if it's NOT pbl?
My dream! I said that to someone today!
Love this question! every classroom functioned like a "gifted" classroom? cc: https://t.co/VDObA5tQW6
What if every classroom looked more like our ABC classrooms?
Seriously! Having trouble getting my thoughts in 140 characters! https://t.co/ZyRVXhWRJh
140 character response possible for this one? https://t.co/xlcDucvsYD
Honest question: Are "project/problem based learning" and "innovation" synonymous?
A3: Instruction done in creative, innovative, and surprising way. Model , model taking risks
Haven't tried Chatterpix! Definitely checking that out after the chat!
I'm still new to the whole PBL thing...couldn't it be innovative if the Ss just try something new?
A:4 Ditto to that and stop motion, , exploration lite, and 123draw https://t.co/u3XfCRJ5mP
A4: I love , , , , and for creation. is also a must.
that is what I am aiming for. Every child deserves the innovation of ABC
A4: Google slides, docs, drawings, , , youtube, , ... Ss find more each day!!
what a tough question.. I say yes but can't think of example
A1: co-creating new learning resources with the students based on the learning goals, student's learning curve and interests
Mine too, Margie! Let's not stop until it's done! Mission 101! https://t.co/5AfKX1hFi2
My dream! I said that to someone today!
A4: Please don't forget about the best tool of all in your class. The relationship you form with Ss. This foundation is essential.
also definitely helps having & ppl that truly get it to lean on, even if it is digitally!
Inn. is more about a mindset than program. TruePBL must B innovative but there R other ways 2B Inn. Ts.
That's what I was thinking, but now I'm not so sure. That said - challenging my thinking is ALWAYS a good thing!
not necessarily. Go deeper with this. What do you mean?
Love it when my Ss relax a bit knowing I am not perfect at these things either! But we learn together! https://t.co/GJMGnKpNX1
A3: Instruction done in creative, innovative, and surprising way. Model , model taking risks

Can learning still be innovative if not part of PBL? ex - coding as part of procedural writing in ELA
Yes, definitely! We should as what they think! https://t.co/MbXEG2Ma5A
I'm still new to the whole PBL thing...couldn't it be innovative if the Ss just try something new?
Yes, definitely! We should as what they think! https://t.co/MbXEG2Ma5A
I'm still new to the whole PBL thing...couldn't it be innovative if the Ss just try something new?
Yes! The kids that struggle to "do school" need innovative teaching and learning the most!
Totally agree! https://t.co/VNQvxR03yA
A4: Please don't forget about the best tool of all in your class. The relationship you form with Ss. This foundation is essential.
Q4: We use Autodesk Inventor, ROBOTC, Itch, Kahn, Google Class, and everything from Prezi to Haiku.
have you tried Adobe Slate? The design abilities are beautiful! https://t.co/IxXtG4lA2E
A4: Love using for Ss design. is a great resource as well.
A4: we are a and use an awful lot. During instruction, share files and collaborate on files

Q4: We use Autodesk Inventor, ROBOTC, Itch, Kahn, Google Class, and everything from Prezi to Haiku.
Looking into lightbot tomorrow - looks great for differentiation! All are capable, just at different levels!
Late joining in... 5G T from SE Michigan
Another piece of technology ...awesome assessment tool
When does a tool become common place and no longer innovative? Webquests were once innovative!
Us too, Heidi! I call our digital work flow! The work flow is critical to supporting the innovation! https://t.co/bgfJFFD14J
A4: we are a and use an awful lot. During instruction, share files and collaborate on files
best def out there - Innovation = way of THINKING that CREATES something NEW and BETTER. Thx The Innovator's Mindset
Hi Krista! Welcome! Currently discussing Q4! Tech tools that support innovation! https://t.co/VkMXRuHCBi
Late joining in... 5G T from SE Michigan
all the tools in the world don't matter with it.
it's a CAD system. Check out Tynkercad- free and user friendly!
So true! Just because it isn't the next big thing, does that make it not innovative? https://t.co/laK8OiGU2I
When does a tool become common place and no longer innovative? Webquests were once innovative!
Can't wait to see what others are doing!!
Nothing wrong with a good web quest :)
Can revamp it and add a few more elements. https://t.co/ttY5rd4RcR
When does a tool become common place and no longer innovative? Webquests were once innovative!
Yep! It's NOT about the tech, it's about the learning!
Last one coming at you, ! Bonus Question: BQ. How do you empower students to be owners of innovation? https://t.co/jLhNzyCrRD
love resilience, observant and risk-taking (my favorite ). Even if we fail we learn!
Agreed! Nothing wrong with paper, pencil, & books either. Good tools are not automatically bad bc something new is out.
Something can be innovative to me, but to your class it might be behind the times per say! ;-) https://t.co/Tu7rAYW9wH
Nothing wrong with a good web quest :)
Can revamp it and add a few more elements. https://t.co/ttY5rd4RcR

A5: By "letting go"! Let them construct their own knowledge! Set the goal out there and get out of their way!
GAFE has transformed a lot of our classrooms. Collaboration has reached levels that I never dreamed.
Innovation cant be rigid to b limited to PBL, but all kinds of classroom environment & pedagogical methods https://t.co/T5FlAhOo0p
That's what I'm wondering about after reading others' responses. Can it be called innovation if it's NOT pbl?
A5: some of them have a hard time letting go
Bonus: We just started Genius Hour & it has been a game changer!
I can't stress how important reflection is. We have to make time in our learning to reflect and teach Ss to reflect.
It's not easy for me to step out of their way. Need to remember this.
https://t.co/ybJz2ObYYa
A5: By "letting go"! Let them construct their own knowledge! Set the goal out there and get out of their way!
Bonus ?: Stop answering the Ss questions. Instead: "I don't know. How can we find out?"
when done correctly, it's so powerful.
Yes! SO powerful for adult collaboration too & feel like we are barely reaching potential @ both levels! https://t.co/hsGV4W4026
GAFE has transformed a lot of our classrooms. Collaboration has reached levels that I never dreamed.

Really want to learn more about this. Think it could be great for our 4th grade WIN (what I need) time!
BQ: providing Ss with time, tools, and freedom to create their own learning products so that they never ask "Is it good enough?"
So true! We are doing SS projects this week and a S asked if we were going to reflect on new tools! https://t.co/ceVGboP2rg
I can't stress how important reflection is. We have to make time in our learning to reflect and teach Ss to reflect.

BonusA- Saw this in HES Library FAIL=First Attempt In Learning- Innovation requires risk. You have to let Ss know that's okay!
Maybe you could help do her first!

And, "what should I do now?"
