WOW WOW WOW!
The day has finally arrived to welcome @casas_jimmy to #BookCampPD
We will have four questions during this morning's half hour chat. Buckle your seat belt .... we're off and running ....
Welcome to #BookCampPD 's Saturday morning chat! I am your moderator, Meredith Johnson. Thank you for joining the chat this morning! Please introduce yourself and share one amazing trait about yourself because >YOU< are fantastic!!
Morning everybody! Addison from Franklin, TN. HS SS Teacher and general trouble maker who thrives challenging the status quo. Starting a summer #PLN focused on culture change in the classroom and #Culturize is the foundation of our work. Excited to chat a bit today! #bookcamppd
Good morning, #BookCampPD friends!! Sara from Cincinnati here! Believe it or not, I haven't ready #Culturize yet (I know, I know!)... but it's first-up on my summer read list! Eager to learn from all of you this morning! @casas_jimmy ☕️
Jan here from NC. Just finishing up grad school and interviewing for an AP job. Gave the book to all APs and 2 principals I worked with during my internship. Culture matters! Headed to family partnership activity with my families today - I teach kids with autism! #bookcamppd
Don’t give up. Don’t give up on students. Don’t give up on listening. Don’t give up on having high expectations. Don’t give up on creating a positive, successful culture at your school. #bookcampPD
A1: Simple, inspiring, consistent. The ideas are simple enough that anyone can implement them and yet powerful in a way that inspires me to WANT to use the ideas in my classroom. Finally, throughout the book @casas_jimmy is consistent with his message and vision. #bookcamppd
I haven't read #culturize yet either. I have it and have skimmed through it a few times. It is on my list to read this summer. Nice to get a sneak peak into thinking and some ideas to take into the reading. #BookCampPD
Needed right now. I think in talking to staffs at so many schools with all the conflict and negative things around this book gives us an opportunity to refocus the ship on positive builders. I am going to suggest it for a whole staff book next year at my school. #BookCampPD
I have a copy of #culturize but haven't had a chance to read it yet. Working on school culture is my more for continuing at my current school. I can't wait to read it this summer. #BookCampPD
Relationships, bravery, WIT. Building relationships with colleagues and Students is key. Being brave enough to share your awesome with everyone, even those who don't want to hear it. And doing Whatever It Takes to help others to see they can be leaders. #BookCampPD
A2: We cannot allow average to become our standard. Our kids & quite frankly, all of us deserve to be a part of something great. So we need to bring our very best...every day! #BookCampPD
Thanks I am the PD chair at my school and the staff think wellness is something we should put focus on. I think this would be a great way to do that. #BookCampPD

A1: “staring doing now” don’t wait for others to lead the way; everyone has the capacity to lead and everyone can start doing things to improve the culture and climate of their school/ district. #BookCampPD
A2: Long-term consequences is having a culture in a school where students and staff WANT to be!
We ALL have to put our part to build the desired and needed culture for success
#BookcampPD
The book causes a staff/leader to reflect on the adult relationships in the school. It calls for honesty, risk taking, and vulnerability. This can be uncomfortable short term but have large payoff long term. #BookCampPD
A2: Schools need this book....we have to step outside of ourselves and do something about how we relate and support one another....it is time for a drastic change, it is a great place to start, and long term, it can get everyone on the same page for famililes/kids! #bookcamppd
A2. Long - term consequence of taking responsibility of your own professional growth is 100's of "light bulb moments" are within your grasp - just open the door, go ahead ...... open it .... #BookCampPD
A2: Without a POSITIVE Culture, people leave and students suffer. With a POSITIVE Culture everyone thrives and overcomes adversity together. #BookCampPD
A2. If we don’t build relationships through a strong culture we will continue to struggle. We are all leaders and when we take this on we become empowered. Change is inevitable. #bookcamppd#culturize
A2: 2 things stick out to me. First letting average be ok. I think we are all guilty of it and long term it is making us all mediocre. He other is all The complaining who wants to work somewhere that everyone complains and who will want to learn there? #BookCampPD
A2: I am hopeful that short-term is the emergence of more teacher leaders so we can reach a long-term goal of understanding our students and find ways for them to discover their paths of success! #bookcamppd
A2: If we let the average, non motivated, & awfulizers take over the schools, we will face dire consequences! Anytime I'm in a District where the culture starts to tank, it's like a ship that has sprung a leak. Problem is, Ts jump ship but leav3 Ss behind. #Culturize#BookCampPD
A2: We can never forget our work is about people. Therefore, it is critical we pause & take time to invest in each other in a positive way in order for everyone in our school communities to be successful. #BookCampPD
A2 Sentiment that has really resonated w/me was we need to advocate for those who don't know how to advocate for themselves. I believe this will have long term effects. #BookCampPD
A2 we have to keep pushing for changes, reflect on what we have been doing, having a positive culture is key and we need to keep focusing on the relationships, being present everyday and push ourselves to make an impact #BookcampPD
A2: We need to step off our island and help create a school culture that is best for all students and teachers. One person can't do it alone. #BookCampPD
A2) Short term-reflecting on how i contribute to school cutlure long term-ideas on how to build + sch. culture. I'm on PBIS team-how r we setting the culture of sch 4 our Ss? #Culturize#bookcamppd
A2: It forces all stakeholders to reexamine the paradigm of education in the 21st Century. It strips away the arguments over funding, testing, tech, etc. and gets to the heart of the matter - the purpose of education and how we #culturize to meet that purpose. #bookcamppd
Yes, as school leaders we need to encourage, support & inspire others to take on a leadership role in our schools. School admin cannot do this on their own & sustain excellence. #BookCampPD
A3 I try to promote risk taking and not being afraid to make mistakes, that it is okay, and when I read "experiments encouraged and failures expected, definitely resonated with me #Culturize#BookcampPD
A2 Majaiaise Risk taking is so important in cultures of trust because we can support each other to move beyond the comfort zone & find the sweet spot to impact teaching. #BookCampPD
A3. "It is important to take time to surround yourself with others (like all of YOU amazing #PLN team) who help keep you focused on the things that matter, who energize you, and give you hope. #BookCampPD
A3: Something that resonated with me: "Your culture of your organization will be defined by the worst behavior you are willing to tolerate"--and "Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe"!!!! #BookCampPD
A fire on one log will fizzle out fast. A fire with fuel, kindling, and tender will continue to burn long into the night! Empower others to keep lighting the way! #BookCampPD@ERobbPrincipal@KGT_Educator@_on11

A2: Expecting excellence starts with our own example. Having the highest expectations for ourselves shows this commitment daily. Empowering all members of the learning community to lead is also important. #BookCampPD
A3 favorite hands down, I've quoted it several times since...If Ts subscribe to the notion that kids CAN'T, don't be surprised when kids WON'T #BookcampPD
A2: Keep trying with those students who seem unreachable. Maybe we will get shot down a dozen times, but maybe we will get through. Maybe we can just crack open that door and it will be the start of something. #bookcamppd
A3. "The most effective educators didn't become a teacher or principal to help others be successful. They did it to change the environment and conditions so they could have the best chance to be successful." #BookCampPD
A2 short term means we have to address negativity & cultures of average & this can mean hard conversations-longterm means success for ALL students-both have to happen #BookcampPD
I think I agree? Not sure. R U thinking average is a partial effort that contributes 2 sch culture? Maybe Ts/staff r not prioritizing how they are building/breaking cutlure of school? #bookcamppd#Culturize
A3. I just started the book- the 4 core principals of positive school culture are critical: champion for all students, expect excellence, carry the banner, be a merchant of hope! ❤️#BookCampPD
THIS is what my book looks like! I felt like EVERY page was worthy of underline/highlighting
In many occasions, I closed the book and just stared at the wall to soak it all in! #Culterize 📚📖💕🙌🏼🌟✨
#BookcampPD@casas_jimmy
I have really been learning the importance of adult relationships that can go past the collegial aspect. Not that all will but understanding how to have a collegial relationship is also important. I'm hoping to build upon working relationships. #BookCampPD
A3: The story of @casas_jimmy going on a home visit with his principal hit me hard. Helped me remember that there is more to the story than the 86 minutes a student is in my room every other day. #BookCampPD
A2: We can never forget our work is about people. Therefore, it is critical we pause & take time to invest in each other in a positive way in order for everyone in our school communities to be successful. #BookCampPD
A2: We need to step off our island and help create a school culture that is best for all students and teachers. One person can't do it alone. #BookCampPD
A3: The title Merchant of Hope. I love it so much I almost want to tattoo it but instead I might get a vinyl made for my door next year “Abandon all doubt ye who enter here” We must focus on spreading an I can message #BookCampPD
Educators serve as merchants of hope! This role is incredibly precious and we must take this honor to ignite a spark in our culture for the students, teachers, and families. #BookCampPD
and how can we get ALL stakeholders to understand and put this into action? I'm specifically thinking of how state testing in WA right now is so disruptive to the positive culture of the school #BookCampPD#Culturize
A4: @casas_jimmy, you said:
“in fact, my personal experiences served as my motivation for becoming a school leader.”
What advice do you have for us who WANT to lead but not necessarily as admin?!? 🤔
#BookcampPD
A3 ... All staff members must carry the banner for their school in a positive light at all times... we need to remember this-how do we represent when we talk about students/families/colleagues when we are in public? #BookcampPD
A4: When we need to ignite an entire staff, some who may not want to be ignited, where do we start, how do we take it off on the right foot and help it to spread like wildfire?! #BookCampPD
I don’t have the book in front of me, but I’m really stuck on the part about allowing/settling for average. We owe it to ourselves, each other, and the students to be better than average. #BookCampPD
What I'm realizing is that I cannot allow the disruption of testing to disrupt the culture in my classroom. I must model that it does NOT disrupt me and therefore my kids should not allow it to disrupt them. Tough to do, but something I will strive for next year. #BookCampPD
WISHING and hoping that educators will consider this #FAR#BookcampPD summer initiative for their professional learning. Even wrote a blog posting about it :-) https://t.co/lgfXQZDYBh <-- please check it out when your schedule allows.
