Howdy #engagechat family; I've been out of town and missing chatting. Barbara, author of What's Under Your Cape?, speaker and life coach here in TX, where it was a sunny with a high of 75 today.
Hey, #engagechat friends! I'm an international literacy consultant based in Tokyo. I'm jumping in for a bit before I have to moderate #edchatPH in about thirty minutes. I'm so happy to learn with all of you!
A1: I see leaderships as a vocation or service. A leader should say, “what can I do for you?” Just like a teacher says “how can I help you?” #EngageChat
A1: I think of leadership development as developing those traits in yourself and others that make a strong leader. It's about equipping and empowering to help be the BEST servant leaders we can be. #engagechat
A1: To me, Leadership Development means serving in a role that facilitates learning for everyone, all stakeholders. It involves sharing in responsibility to help our schools & staff be the best they can be for our Ss. #engagechat
A1:
Leadership development means we are lifelong learners.
We read. We collaborate. We learn. We grow.
We strive to do all that we can to serve others.
#engagechat
A1: Leadership development means continuously learning and growth. It is also providing the opportunity for others to contribute and to lead. It is encouraging and fostering the best in everyone. It means being a part of things and not above them.#engagechat
A1: Leadership development means that we create an environment where others can feel safe and supported to help in making decisions and to take the lead on different initiatives or projects. #engagechat
A1 Leadership development is an ongoing process. There are always growth edges, opportunities for feedback, and the constant encouragement of others to do their best. #Engagechat
A1: People interested in learning and growing leadership skills. Not just for themselves but leadership skills in others. It's really just a fancy way to say "team learning" #engagechat
A1- Leadership is a skill that requires growth and flexibility. Everyone is different, groups and communities are unique and dynamic and having an open-mind, humility and being cognizant of the needs of these dynamic entities requires development and innovation #EngageChat
Leaders growing and building their capacity in the area of leadership to impact growth and possibly change in themselves and others. #engagechat#capacity#growth
A1. Discovering & cultivating the leadership ability in a person by reinforcing the leadership skills they already possess & to teach them new ones. #engagechat
A1: It means to me helping people to draw out their latent potential to become good or better at what they are supposed to do in their area of work. It's an ongoing process, a journey, not a destination. #engagechat
A1. Leadership is a critical aspect of all social endeavors. In schools, talented leadership is essential to S achievement. Leadership impacts all facets of education: T motivation, the conditions & environment in which T&L occurs, & interactions with the community. #engagechat
A1: Leadership development to me means that I, and those around me, are doing things to enhance the way we reach others, whether it is through our own professional development or helping others with theirs. #engagechat
A1 #engagechat I have worked with leaders who firmly plant in place b/c it has worked in the past. But the fluidity & mosaic of schools requires leadership to progress and often rapidly. The best leaders remain developing with the understanding they are servants of the community
I agree with your description of leadership. We all have different skills & strengths and are all capable of leading & serving in different capacities. Shared talents...shared leadership. #engagechat
I love this. Culture of reflection! Leaders know what their strengths are and can see the strengths in others, especially when they might be different from their own. #engagechat
A1: Leadership development to me is reflecting on our practices. Then finding ways to improve. Stepping out and finding workshops, books, etc to support us in the process. #engagechat
A1: Leadership dev for me has come to mean --when an indiv. is ready for/ given the opportunity to grow by participating WILLINGLY in activities that improve the skills, abilities, tools, response (abilities) and confidence to IMPACT OTHERS (not for oneself).#engagechat
A2: Leaders need to be flexible, able to recognize the gifts and talents of others, and they need to be willing to join in and do the hard work that is asked of others. #engagechat
A2: I think leaders have to walk the walk, while knowing, understanding and admitting to limitations of what they can and can’t do, and working with that #engagechat
A2: Just 3?
1. Empathy. Someone who listens to understand.
2. Authenticity. Be real.
3. Growth mindset. Someone who models resilience, perseverance, grit and grace.
#engagechat
A2- 1-Observation and intentional, purposeful listening. 2- response with reaction, staying calm and effective 3-humility and sound judgement (knowing when to step aside and let others lead) #EngageChat
We can't lose sight of that no matter our role in schools. An edu leader can be a positive role model for the culture they want to see. #LifeLongLearning#Engagechat
A2- Effective leaders are as skilled at stepping back as they are at stepping forward. They're keen observers and listeners. They're invested. #engagechat
A1. Power must be handled carefully & the balance bw influence & confidence maintained. The main principles of education in schools have to be respected: maturity when dealing with Ts, Ss & parents, & acceptance of oneself & of others has to be practised. #engagechat
A2: An effective leader 1) strives to truly know the people they lead, 2) actively listens to the people in their team, and 3) encourages professional growth in their team. #engagechat
A1) It involves a deep self assessment to start, and then particular attention those ares that need it the most. Consider the five major headings of character, competence, compassion, communication, and commitment. There are 229 total elements by my count. #engagechat
A2:
1. Clear & consistent communication
2. Creativity with resources
3. Compassion &empathy for adults and children (just for you @MrsGodsiff)
#EngageChat
Q2. 1. They create capacity ie they develop other leaders. 2. They are collaborative in nature. 3. They are able to persuade people to put aside their personal goals/agendas in order to achieve organizational goals. #engagechat
A2- Effective leaders are as skilled at stepping back as they are at stepping forward. They're keen observers and listeners. They're invested. #engagechat
A2: Strong communicator- their vision, their enthusiasm, their commitment, support of those they serve.
Integrity/ Honesty--even when others not "watching"; keeping their word, supporting agreements
Accept/Respond well to conflict & challenge assumptions. #engagechat
A2) They include being self aware, situationally aware, and a constant learner - but three is far too limited to describe all of the attributes a sustained leader needs. #engagechat
Thanks for all of your insights, @daviswelcome and #engagechat friends! I'm off to moderate #edchatPH, but I will read through the rest of the feed later. 💗💗
A1: leadership development is putting people in positions that allows them let their talents shine but also putting folks in position to expand their perspectives.
#engagechat
A3- Communication without judgement and learning how to respond not react. If they can grow interpersonal skills, mindfulness strategies- great leadership will emerge #EngageChat
A3: I think the most important training new leaders can get is understanding the need to coach others, ability to appreciate differences among their staff and engage in the art of positive communication. #engagechat
A2: The most effective leader is a servant...one who listens, cares, shares, helps, loves, gives from the heart and is guided by a sense of compassion and commitment. #engagechat
A3: Ummmm, how about Self Care: What's Your Plan BE? We cannot serve from an empty vessel.
Some #mindfulness practice strategies would serve to help the flow so that leaders can overflow.
https://t.co/aGgyrBNqkT#engagechat
A3: Training in effective teaching practices would be the most important topic for new leaders. They can then help their teachers improve by passing on the effective methods (esp, #Spacedrepetition#retrievalpractice) #engagechat
A3: I think it is important for new leaders to be versed in communications skills. Without being able to effectively communicate a leader does not have the ability to inspire others to discover his/her greatness.. #engagechat
A3) Leadership is complex and difficult. You start your leadership journey wherever you are, and progress through experience and training in many relevant areas. Address your most immediate weaknesses first. #engagechat
A3: One is the most overlooked training topic is leadership adversity. Being prepared for adult misbehavior seems to catch everyone off-guard. We are dealers of hope. #engagechat
A3 Empathy is a skill to be nurtured. From this comes the appreciation of others' work, the ability to listen and communicate, creative problem solving, and systems thinking. #Engagechat
A3: leadership with an equity lens, inspiring hope in dynamic times, leveraging relationships, cultivating positive and inclusive learning environments. #EngageChat
A3. A good educational leader needs a solid understanding of oneself and should also have confidence. When you believe in yourself, you can accomplish so much more. #engagechat
A3: Ask them to reflect on their personal values. Leadership development shouldn't be all about how to do things but also more importantly to me how to be and become a better human being. We don't need new leaders who are just skilled manipulators. #engagechat
A1: Leadership development is the evolution from a focus on ‘me’ and my needs to a focus on the service of others and supporting their needs. #engagechat
A3: New leaders need to find a MENTOR; Given tools to balance innovation/risk/new ideas w/ what is asked of them by building, organization, boards, and the like #engagechat
A3.1 How to connect with tenured teachers, teenagers, disgruntled staff members, the community, and making time to take care of yourself and well being...is there one training for all of that? 😂 #engagechat
(My experience) I’m alarmed by the humility deficit in many leaders. Why do we reinforce, recognize & promote the brazen & arrogant, over the humble? Why do we treat admin as celebrities? I’m always in awe of the truly humble–those consistently making sacrifices. #engagechat
A1: Learning to communicate and relate to others. Leadership is about knowing people, their passions, and strengths. Leaders know that it takes time to bring around positive change and they know how to work with others to get it done. #engagechat
A3: understanding the politics associated with being a school leader. You walk a fine line. Its vital to understand how to spur change but have others feel as though they were stirring the process.
#engagechat
A4- I think a huge barrier can be ego. Leadership is empowering and often with empowerment comes a drive so focused that blinders go up and a vision of good intentions gets lost #EngageChat staying collaborative and interactive is key.
A4 A barrier that prevents effective leadership development is not trusting those around you. Keeps one too busy and takes away from reflection and relational connections. #Engagechat
A4: time above all; capacity of those that lead the learning, demands of high-intensity roles. It’s hard to press pause on the “doing” to focus on personal growth. We are natural “doers” in our work. #engagechat
A4: I think group think us a barrier. It is easy for leaders to get indoctrinated into the “we have always done it this way club.” Innovation, being willing to listen and recognize great ideas; even if they’re not yours is important in a leader. #engagechat
A4) Again so many!! Failure to develop from strengths, failing to maintain a moral character, too many charlatans pretending to peddle leadership development, "we don't have the budget for that", a weak leadership lexicon, non-leaders filling leadership roles, etc. #engagechat
A4: not willing to trust others first, fear of stepping into a leadership role, fear of failure, and not understanding what leadership truly is.
#EngageChat
A4: Close-mindedness is the kryptonite of growth and progress. You HAVE to be willing to change if you want to grow and improve. Think of professional development like technology. What is hot now may be irrelavent in 5 years. #EngageChat
A4: I think group think us a barrier. It is easy for leaders to get indoctrinated into the “we have always done it this way club.” Innovation, being willing to listen and recognize great ideas; even if they’re not yours is important in a leader. #engagechat
A4: I believe if people want to develop; they can. Most barriers are personal barriers or excuses they’ve set up. The culture might not be great to make application, but that’s another story. #engagechat
A4. A campus climate in chaos ie. On the verge of closing due to low academic performance. Insecure leaders who feel threatened by the leadership of others, they will not develop future leaders. Lack of having a mentor. #engagechat
A4: A lack of understanding that leadership needs development as well. A failure to devote time to allow leaders to learn to be better at leading #engagechat
A4 Sometimes it is hard to lead other leaders if you never walked in their roles/shoes; experiences are crucial when leading certain groups #engagechat
A4. Arrogant leadership = Kryptonite. There’s a fine line bw confidence & arrogance. Arrogance crosses the line of confidence. Arrogant leaders believe they no longer have a need to learn, grow or change. They wholeheartedly believe they’re right & others are wrong. #engagechat
A4: Assumption that a new leader will he "effectively developed" once he or she completes a course or two.....since it's a journey, they do need companions who are not afraid to give feedback and tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear. #engagechat
A3: Learning to communicate and relate to others. Leadership is about knowing people, their passions, and strengths. Leaders know that it takes time to bring around positive change and they know how to work with others to get it done. #engagechat#beyondthedesk
A4: Barrier that prevents effective development opportunities for new leaders...not believing in your leaders enough to provide ongoing support...as simple as them knowing that their work is appreciated and that they have a ‘shoulder to lean on’. #engagechat
A4: I feel we don’t give leaders enough space to fail and learn from it. There’s a lot of pressure on them to not fail so it isn’t always looked at as the way to get better. #engagechat
A4: Hurdles- when a leader 1. believes they donʻt need to grow; 2. Wonʻt/Doesnʻt listen to otherʻs ideas, input, advice; 3. Wanting to be right; 4. lack of trust or credibility; 5. Not asking for help -- and building collaboration #engagechat
A4. While it's fun to pile on the ego of leaders. Many educators in high-need districts are constantly on their toes trying to keep up. Many P.D. demands are passed down from district as part of CYA #engagechat
A4: Fear of change. In today’s world, change is ongoing and if a leader is afraid of trying something new, then their team could suffer as a result. #EngageChat
A4. Arrogant leaders feel best when they talk about themselves. They excel at taking normal human interaction into the truly narcissistic realm. They love to share their accomplishments; not comfortable listening or holding a conversation on other topics. #engagechat
A4: I feel we don’t give leaders enough space to fail and learn from it. There’s a lot of pressure on them to not fail so it isn’t always looked at as the way to get better. #engagechat
And that's a tricky skill for most people to learn. I think any great leader that has managed to stay in the game most likely has that skill on lock! The rest just get burnt out and leave. #engagechat
A4. Arrogant leaders have a difficult time saying “I was wrong” or “I didn’t handle that well.” Instead, they explain why others are wrong & how they are right i.e., the whole team & organization is MESSED UP, and that’s why they need to take the actions they do. #engagechat
And too many try to rest on non-existent laurels. If leadership development is so badly broken (and I believe it is) how are we to even begin to conduct leadership selection with any confidence of good results? #EngageChat
A5. I'll answer that question with another question: What does it mean to be an educator? Both require selfless dedication to the learning, growth and enrichment of those we serve. #engagechat
A5. A mentor shares his or her own personal experiences, insights and knowledge with their mentee. Mentoring isn't focused on specific skills and actions to improve them it's more about overall development.#engagechat
A5- I think all leaders have mentors, those who inspire/guide them throughout their lives. They have those near them their counsel & friends who hopefully model mindfulness & growth. We all need a mentor or two these are the relationships that shape us professionally #EngageChat
A5: being vulnerable enough to share your mistakes, walking the talk, being honest, providing inspiration, and understanding your RESPONSIBILITY in growing the next leaders. #engagechat
A5: To avail yourself and walk along with the mentee to listen, guide, advise, encourage, empathise, cry, laugh with him or her so that they know they are not alone on this journey to becoming more effective leaders. #engagechat
A5 A mentor is there to be a sounding board and a support system. They are adept at giving praise and critical feedback because collegiality is not always congeniality. They are a role model that has built a relationship around trust and a focus on student learning. #engagechat
A5. Leadership mentor is someone who you meet with as you are becoming a leader, who sits and checks on goals you have set for yourself, where you want to develop areas or needs, etc. #engagechat
A4. Arrogant leaders are quick to tell how wonderful they are & all the great things they have accomplished, they withhold praise/recognition when others do great work or are successful. It’s hard for them to believe others are worthy of attention & recognition. #engagechat
A5: Taking a chance on potential and being willing to walk alongside of them while modeling the traits you're trying to help them sharpen: Empathy, trustworthiness, grace, equity, respect, contrition, forgiveness, authenticity, passion, courage, joy. #engagechat
A5: You’ve reached a true leadership level when you lead leaders!! Leadership mentoring goes beyond “do what I say”...it’s more like “live/lead as I’ve led”. Is it Sunday morning-up-in-here??? #Engagechat
A5: Being a leadership mentor means lifting others up. It is looking or opportunities for other people to lead. It means not knowing everything and learning from others. #engagechat
A5 Practice what you preach. Be the example of excellence. Listen! Observe! Provide feedback! Expose! Reflect! Support! Most of all Love and Be Kind! #engagechat
A4: Fear of change. In today’s world, change is ongoing and if a leader is afraid of trying something new, then their team could suffer as a result. #EngageChat
A5 Practice what you preach. Be the example of excellence. Listen! Observe! Provide feedback! Expose! Reflect! Support! Most of all Love and Be Kind! #engagechat
A5: You’ve reached a true leadership level when you lead leaders!! Leadership mentoring goes beyond “do what I say”...it’s more like “live/lead as I’ve led”. Is it Sunday morning-up-in-here??? #Engagechat
I think these issues are far more challenging to overcome than logistical and financial barriers. Those can usually be solved with resourcefulness. Trust-building and culture shifting take far more time and effort! #engagechat
A5: Investing in young leaders by sharing your knowledge from your own experiences, help them develop their strengths, and learning to recognize hurdles and obstacles, so they can become successful leaders. #engagechat
A5: Investing in young leaders by sharing your knowledge from your own experiences, help them develop their strengths, and learning to recognize hurdles and obstacles, so they can become successful leaders. #engagechat
A1: It is about learning how to be a model in many different perspectives and also the packaged skills sharpening on building a community with mutual support and collaboration. #ENGAGECHAT#EDET543
A5: This is interesting because I almost answered 4 by saying proximity to an effective mentor. I think an effective mentor is one that models all of the traits that we’ve been presenting and wants to see others exhibit those traits as well. #EngageChat
A5. Someone who is genuinely interested in discovering & enhancing the leadership potential in others. They are someone who serves as a coach & coaches others to improve through reciprocal feedback. They are also honest but caring. #engagechat
A4. Besides leaders getting in their own way, they have to admit the development they need. Just because you have a leadership role doesn’t mean you know it all. Shy away from pride, don’t be afraid get help from other seasoned teachers, find time to learn #EngageChat
A5: A leadership mentor is someone who believes in the aspiring or new leader and who challenges and supports that leader in ways that gives her/him the courage to embrace and lead change toward a better tomorrow. #engagechat
A5) I guess I'm struggling with an answer because as a leader, your primary job is to develop other leaders. You are, by definition a mentor when you are a leader. Nothing should change; you should be the best YOU (the best leader) you can possibly be & develop others #engagechat
A5: Someone who holds a space for growth and reflection. Someone who knows when to create cognitive challenge and when to take a step back and encourage. #EngageChat
