#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
Just added mine to the list. Want to share this with faculty. Even though most are not on twitter want them to see how they can peer collobrate with others #LearnLAP
Hey all, Phil from Northern VA signing in. I teach 7th Grade US History II and am the founder of #waledchat which meets Thursday nights at 9pm. Glad to be here!! #learnlap
We are the Human Restoration Project - a team of public school teachers looking to instill progressive methods in schools everywhere! We want students to have value, perform authentic tasks, and discover their passions. #LearnLAP
I am a preservice teacher studying to be an elementary and middle school math and science teacher from PA. This is my first ever twitter chat and I’m super excited! #LearnLAP#gccedu
Hello everyone! Jenn here...I just started a blog all about student-centered learning....please feel free to check it out and subscribe! https://t.co/bHJeKQ6E8Z Looking forward to tonight's chat! #learnlap
Hi All: Chris Hizynski here. I teach middle and high school social studies and am looking forward to some insightful conversation tonight. #learnLAP#WALearnlap
A1: It means that you when your ship gets blown of course you don't give up. You adjust your sails and keep going. That adjustment might mean asking for help #LearnLAP
Q1 #LearnLAP It means being BOLD and AUDACIOUS as a learner. It means you take the plunge and rely on your crew to keep you afloat--adjusting course when needed.
A1) Take in everything like a sponge. Be willing to learn from your mistakes and take critics...but be true to yourself, your lessons, and your students. Dare to try anything and learn from the failures or the glory. #learnlap
A1: To learn like a pirate means to stay involved and active in the learning process, being intentional with every step you take so you don’t have to retract your steps. But if you do, you’re willing to try again to get it right. #LearnLAP#gccedu
A1: It means being willing to give up authentic control of your classroom. Let your students engage, discover, inspire, and work together to find the next best course of action. This is what inspires real learning! #edchat#LearnLAP
A1 Learning like a pirate means you search and use everything you can get your hands on to help you to learn to achieve your goal. When rough seas occur, you strategize and never give up! #learnlap
I do not remember where I heard it but it resonates. Life is a team sport while school expects you to go solo. The expectations need to change to help our Ss. #LearnLAP
A1 Stand up, move around, constantly adjust the sails and check the horizon.
Routine is ok but must be prepared for any storm, rough seas, or the unknown. #learnlap
A1: Learning like a pirate means being able to make adjustments and stick with the course (or goal) that you have planned, despite whatever setbacks you might encounter. #LearnLAP#WALearnLap
A1: I think it's a shift in mental models to empower, support, trust and celebrate students. Be a learner in the classroom and make sure it where kids want to be! #LearnLAP
I totally believe in this my biggest struggle is them not using their time and control correctly. I try to give them feedback and correct them to stay on course but they still struggle. #LearnLAP
For sure. Trust is key. All students want to learn - but some need relationships, trust, inspiration, authenticity, relevance, care, safety, and more. We, as educators, need to find whatever that is. #LearnLAP
A1. Jimi here from LI. Learning like a pirate means knowing the conditions your sailing into. Do your necessary research, know your constituents and your material. Don't be afraid to take risks. #learnlap
A1: To me it means be bold and take charge of learning. Grab everything, every bit of treasure I can and decide what to do with it—keep, share, throw back. #LearnLAP
As a HS T and only being 1 of their 6-8 teachers, sometimes I feel like its to much work to fight the culture to get students to be active participate in their learning. Especially hard when I feel like I am the only one in my building that is trying to be different #LearnLAP
This is definitely a common fear for us too! It's years ingrained with "teach bell to bell!" and "stop wasting time!" that has made us forget that THAT struggle is actually learning. Not all learning has to be purely academic and clean. It's scary! #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A1: Learning like a pirate means using various and any resources necessary to arrive at your goal. This also symbolizes the need to venture out of your comfort zone sometimes! #learnlap
A1: Having the confidence in your ability to reach kids in a way that makes a difference in helping them do their best work and be their best self. #learnlap
A1 Be courageous to learn something new. Be brave in opening your classroom to others for observations and feedback. Be flexible and hand some control over to Ss. #LearnLAP
A1 I think it means to follow your curiosity, create questions and seek answers. Be willing to get thrown overboard but fight like crazy to get back on #Learnlap
You might be the only place where they get to direct their own learning - a skill that will be critical in the future if they are to be lifelong learners - Go for it - You got this! #LearnLAP
A1: To me, Learning like a pirate means giving students the tools and guidance to step up and take charge of their learning. Empowering students will make them want to learn more than they otherwise would by passively being fed information via DI.. #WALearnLap#LearnLap
A1: It means "setting sail" on an adventure that will involve collaboration, curiosity, growth, risk-taking, triumph, failure, sharing, resourcefulness, creativity and passion. #learnlap
A2: As a principal, I enlist help from my teachers all of the time. I can’t do my job alone...need my teacher colleagues to help with vision, direction, and decisions that will impact them and the students #LearnLAP
A1: Taking risks, knowing you have no idea whether your ship will take you where you want it to, but it will take you somewhere. Changing course in middle of journey because you see something better. Allowing yourself to wreck, but reflecting, repairing, trying again. #learnlap
A2 LOTS of crew time before we set sail! Names, favorites, music, smiles.... Buld the team then explore = relationships, trust, openess, transparency #learnlap
I have to keep telling my self this. I know I can be doing a better job of implementing, (Need better routines for transitions, use accountability partners, etc.) #LearnLAP
A2: Create an environment where the students participate in creating the "rules" and procedures. Make them an active part of the creation process. #LearnLAP
I don't want to get ahead of the #EduProtocol chat, but I love the Smart Starts. One of my favorites for MS ELA is an action shot on a Google Slide with a metaphor that captures a value. I post and display all of them. Kids look at them ALL the time! #LearnLAP
A2: Having people to do certain classroom tasks. Finding me first and second mate to help the sub when I am out. And making bad behavior (notice, not the student) walk the plank! #learnlap
A2: Give everyone a role in class so that they feel valued and appreciated. As a teacher, you can’t do everything yourself! Student empowerment = classroom success and positive vibes 👍. #WALearnLap#LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A2: if I had my classroom up and running today I would love to create an atmosphere of support and encouragement where Myself and other students can be involved outside of just the classroom. #LearnLAP#gccedu
AAARRRrrrrr Matey #learnlap#ArtOfMath teacher here from London, Ontario. Q2: The classroom crew can work together when passionate about solving a common goal. Brainstorm a diverse project that highlights different strengths to get all hands on deck!
A2 I believe that empowering students as leaders is essential in creating a ownsership w/I the classroom! Also working to create a shared vision and purpose #classroomgps#learnlap
A2 As an elem T I start every day with a morning mtg. "I am heard therefore I am" is central to our culture. Ss build our classroom norms, take on decision making, and look out for one another. Continues with choice & voice throughout year. #LearnLAP
Not to mention, it's normal to fail (and fail often). There's so many times we in the classroom have lessons that bomb and classes that accomplish very little (at least to us, probably otherwise in terms of skill-building. But that's how we make real change! Risk! #LearnLAP
A2: As a HS Teacher I need to do a better job of this. Want to start setting a classroom goal for each week. Try to get students buy in, "After All, a crew that works together wins together!" #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A2: I have an S who writes his own question of the day next to mine, and in another block there’s one who writes the exit ticket. They also have choices each day and peer tutoring is always one of them. They are so successful when they feel invested in the learning! #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
We have morning meetings. We share, discuss, problem solve and have group activities. Building a culture of trust and caring. Relationships are everything. #LearnLAP
A2: I use morning meetings to create relationships with my students and between my students. We share ideas and openly talk about what is and isn’t going right. I authentically listen to their ideas. #LearnLap
Having a great crew means you have to trust each other. Building relationships w Ss and leading them to trust themselves is a major component in making all the rigging move as it should. #LearnLap
A2 Start the year with getting to know you time, then squeeze in community moments when possible. Focus on the fact that their own success is not diminished by someone else's success. Lend a hand to help guide the ship #LearnLAP
A2. @Flipgrid getting to know us, followed up with rotating assigned seats (until I know everyone) to build relationships. Jigsaw activities to help them realize we are part of a team. #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A2. Being a good captain means bringing out the best in each of your crew members. Establish expectations, not rules. Value each Ss individuality and what they bring to the crew. Create and environment where you show your Ss how to become self guided learners. #LearnLAP
A2) I explain day 1 we are a team so we need to work together to make each other better. I have class jobs, morning meeting, and I put Ss in the driver's seat as much as possible. Designing bulletin boards, teaching 1 another, creating projects, researching & more #learnlap
A2. Build relationships, let them know you believe in them and care, once trust is gained then set sail into learning. Empower Ss as they are learning, helping and teaching others, with voices and choice. #learnlap
RIP Harry Anderson To many, he was the Night Court judge or Harry the Hat on Cheers...to me, he was the influential magician and author who influenced me with his incredible character development and a perfectly themed act to fit. #tlap#LearnLAP#LeadLAP
A2: Let students take ownership from day one. Classrooms rules, expectations, decorations, even the syllabus. Sure, you'll get a few ridiculous things - but they'll strictly adhere to their own community. You're there to learn, not be ruled over! #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
I don't want to get ahead of the #EduProtocol chat, but I love the Smart Starts. One of my favorites for MS ELA is a S action shot on a Google Slide with a metaphor that captures a value. I post and display all of them. Kids look at them ALL the time! #LearnLAP#SELinAction
A2: allowing students ownership of learning and rules. Also allowing the reflection after choices are made to give the opportunities to recalibrate. Learn from bad choices and make better ones. #LearnLAP
A2:
My favorite is,to,chart our domains—or things we do well. Then when someone has a certain need, they have a chart of 20+ people that may be able to help. Also—we spend 2 weeks building ensemble, community, setting up norms and social contracts. #LearnLAP
That's why I am here at #learnlap :)
Anyone want to do a Mystery Skype Call for me during our faculty meeting tomorrow. Want to try to model the power of peer collaboration!
A2: failures are celebrated just as much as successes. We learn how to reflect, understand that why it’s the answer is more important than the answer itself, collaboration. we play and take risks. Trying to show the growth is more imp. than grades! #learnlap
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A2: Let students own their learning. Let them choose how they will learn and practice, then reflect on their progress. Let them work together and use each other as resources for their learning. Have Ss set goals and share them with each other. #LearnLAP
A2 I drive them crazy refusing to answer questions - but eventually they "get it" and go after those answers themselves. Right now I've got 8th graders doing @spencerideas sketch videos... I never made one... #LearnLAP
Q2: A ship doesn't run itself! Lot’s of moving rigs means being part of a crew... what are some of your favorite strategies to help establish your classroom crew? #LearnLAP
A2: I agree. Part of the creative process is making mistakes and seeing what works and what doesn't. We will have some clunkers mixed in with tremendous successes. It happens. Just have to keep trying. #WALearnLap#LearnLap
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
If we are serious about bldg community we must provide a venue and time for it to grow. Modeling and practicing the skills to be good people is important. #LearnLAP#SEL
A3: Establish norms and maintain clear expectations. There will always be rough waters but if you have a clear direction you will get to your destintation. It may take a little longer but the more you communicate and stay the course, the better off you will be. #learnlap
Hello #learnLAP! Sorry to be joining late. A2 Remind Ss that the classroom is OUR classroom and share responsibilities with them. Combining strengths and working together will get everyone on the right course!
A3: Consistent support for teachers and students. Whatever they need...someone to listen, someone to give them more tangible assistance. Whatever it takes #LearnLAP
A3: Communicate what the expectations are for each group member and give the students a feedback form to talk about what happened in their group. Pay attention to how they are interacting and offer guidance as needed. #LearnLAP
A3 - Daily, weekly, and monthly Social-Emotional Skills Lessons for us! We do @RustyMayInc's SchoolToolsTV every day, @2ndStepProgram every week, and #KinderPals every month! And don't forget the Classroom Meetings! All about the conversation & relationship-building! #LearnLAP
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
A3 start small and build your group one at a time. Patience can go along ways find your most influential crew members and use them to build your culture. Build a strong collaborative model and include everyone in the process. #Learnlap
A3: it’s important to model behavior that we expect our S’s to practice. I have posters for group work & “how to talk Math” to get them on the right track. I also believe that getting to know your students and their personalities can help create compatible groups. #learnlap
A3: We need to be willing to change our teaching style in order for our students to grasp the content. Search for what works not just what is easy #LearnLAP#gccedu
A3 we need to model how to handle stress and challenges. Our profession provides tons of opportunity for this and our kiddos can pick up on how we react. I think it would also be beneficial to show our students how we reflect when we hit choppy waters or fail at times #learnlap
A2. Build relationships, let them know you believe in them and care, once trust is gained then set sail into learning. Empower Ss as they are learning, helping and teaching others, with voices and choice. #learnlap
A3 Start out the year with what the group norms are. Next year I want to create a poster with each class about what positive group work should look like. Model, model, and more modeling also works #learnlap
A3: As a class, we write group norms which we all sign and refer back to them as needed. Once Ss have built a community of trust with each other, they rarely need to be reminded. We celebrate successes and mistakes early on to build a environment for sharing. #LearnLAP
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
A3: Don't put off challenges, address it right away. But take the necessary time to make the proper decision. Give student's opportunities to fix errors, make teachable moments. Most importantly preach that mistakes are okay. It's part of the problem solving process. #learnlap
A3: our “troubles” come from being nosy so we adopted “life is easier when you mind your own business” as one motto of sorts. Also, we have “town meetings” and we change up our groups/partners. Fussy ones end up leading groups together and it works to bring peace #LearnLAP
Q3: It is important to be proactive to build a foundation of support to encourage risk taking. It's okay to fail or ask questions in front of your crew to show that everyone needs support and has challenges ...even the teacher. #learnlap
A3: Even in HS, I spent a lot of time introducing what good peer collaboration looks like, and am constantly evaluating group dynamics and reminding Ss the importance of communication in a group setting. I also encourage Ss to work with more than just their best friend #LearnLAP
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
A little goes a long way. Having meaningful conversations everyday keeps us from having to have the "bog chat" when things go awry. Ss taking an active role in sharing hopes, dreams, and frustrations of their learning env is powerful/ #LearnLAP
A3: Teaching students they have what it takes to overcome any obstacle. Each member of their group is equipped with a unique gift and effective communication will unlock it. #LearnLap
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
A3: hopefully we have developed relationships and can have real meaningful conversations about the significance of group work. Share our success and failures. Teach leaderships skills of communication and collaboration/empathy #learnLAP
A3: Negativity, gossip, arrogance, and refusal to change can kill the confidence and positivity we want to build in our schools.Empowered Ts, led by a inspirational leader can lead to change #learnlap
A3:
When the seas get rough, it’s time to take the content out and work on those interpersonal skills, then allow the content back in and guide them through—if needed. Often the work on the other skills will help content solve disagreements. #LearnLAP
I want to do this same thing next year. How do you develop them? Just looking for ideas for what to do next year. I got the idea from @joboaler#learnlap
Yes! The only good thing to let simmer is water, not tension! Build in that problem solving so the challenge can be tackled instead of sacking the desire of student learning. #learnlap
A3. Creating, modeling, and maintain group norms is key. We practice how to add to conversations, agree or disagree respectfully and how to be able to come to consensus. It’s amazing when 8yo will say “let’s agree to disagree” and then move on. Practice and patience #LearnLAP
A3. Make clear expectations and model how a group leader should act and demonstrate how the leader shares ideas from everyone, and has each individual person contributing to the project equally taking turns and collaborating. #learnlap
A3: Anthony, I agree. Giving everyone a role makes all students feel like they are a part of the team and not just outsiders. Too often the aggressive kids grab all the roles but as a teacher we have to make sure all students included so nobody left out. #learnlap#WalearnLap
A3: Let your sailors know that you need to lose sight of the dock to achieve great things, which means there may be troubled waters ahead, but you are crew and won't let one big wave throw you out of the boat #learnlap#loving the #pirate#talk
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
Growth mindset thinking! I know, I know...”teacher buzzword” but it is true. We have to teach our Ss that failure is part of the process. I praise attempts & risk taking more than “correct”. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP a2 as a crew member of a pirate ship we all have our individual jobs that keep to ship sailing. Sometimes we to pitch in and help each other out. #waLearnLAP
Have you read #LearnLAP and want to connect with others at your grade level? Add your name on the "Learn Like a PIRATE" PLN here: https://t.co/yqOsvPp2kv
So many GREAT educators to collaborate with! Great for all grade levels & educational positions!
A3 Remember that problems can be solved, and we sail in the same direction. Go back to what the group is working on and why. Focus on that, then you can identify, address, and overcome the conflict. Work together! #learnlap
A3 Classroom norms help a lot to set the culture - trust, support, kindness. Actively support dissent that helps nurture alternative ideas and engage multiple voices - students (& adults) need to learn how to listen and build upon each other's ideas. #LearnLAP
Q3: Batten down the hatches, storms on the horizon and troubled waters ahead... how can we help our pirates to overcome their group troubles? #LearnLAP
A4: Invest all your doubloons into seeing them succeed. When you give them that kind of wealth, you can see them take a crew ashore and bring you back even more treasure buried in their souls! #learnlap@burgessdave@PaulSolarz@ERobbPrincipal
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
Trauma informed care, SEL, lessons, strategies for building resiliency, watching for triggers and daily triage are some of the ways to help our struggling students.
#LearnLAP
A4. Trust them to drive - personalized learning of their choice around standards has been working well for me the last month or so. I do have a few required assignments to make sure basics are met. #LearnLap
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
A3 #LearnLAP I plan on doing some serious en"vision"ing with my Ss by establishing norms together. Why are we here? What's our purpose? When someone's off task, I want to return to our shared vision--not in a lame way (hopefully), but as a reminder that we have GOALS!
A4: Demonstrate all of the values that we expect our students to garnish: empathy, respect, tolerance, kindness, humor, fairness - it's important that we don't let authority get to our heads (and get tossed overboard by our crew). #LeadLAP#LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
A4: Giving student the power of choice makes them feel in better control. They become excited and ready to take on challenges. Give them opportunities to succeed and see growth in themselves. #LearnLAP#gccedu
I need to take leave, sailors! Gotta go to a meeting...part of the Mom gig... happy sailing! Can’t wait to read the rest of the chat when I get home! Thanks for letting me cruise for part of the adventure tonight! #LearnLAP
A4 Proving that the T voice is not the only voice. Ss get a say in how they day unravels. T shows how their mistakes lead to new learning opportunities. #LearnLAP
By modeling the ability to listen and be open to other ideas. With my younger Ss, we take turns having lead roles when working in groups to provide everyone with a chance to practice building communication skills and confidence. #learnLAP
#LearnLAP A4: It begins with hiring. If you hire the right crew, you have no problem showing them the ship, giving them a job, and letting them do it their way. Hire people you want to change YOU, not people you want to change.
A4: as captains we must promote collaboration and risk-taking while modeling these behaviors. It is also important that we share techniques that worked and didn’t work with other colleagues but more importantly share the “WHY”. #LearnLAP
A4: I build my crew by giving jobs to students who don't normally participate. Forcing them from their shell often makes them want to participate in other ways. Helping pass out papers, run errands etc. are great ways to bring outsiders inside the crew. #learnLap#WaLearnLap
A4 Try to seek out those small opportunities to step back and let them lead. Sometimes I just stop talking and they carry on without them even realizing it. #LearnLAP
A4: I’m a new teacher. Mistakes happen. Sometimes I cover them up, and sometimes my Ss can see that things have not gone according to plan. I tell them I’m also learning! I think owning these occasional slips makes them feel like they can be bold and take risks too! #LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
A3: Those who want respect, give respect. Unfortunately, for many students, respect is a lost art. We, as teachers, need to model what respect looks like for our students every day. #WALearnLap#LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
A4 An example: Ss choose the text they would like to work with for Lit. As a group they decide their hw assignments, their expectations, and how they will record their thinking. They lead conversation. I am a guide and a partner in the journey. #LearnLAP
A4. Modelling risks in the classroom, and learning with Ss also encourages our mates to take the lead! Give them opportunites to lead discussions, share ideas and voice opinions! #learnlap
A4 empowerment comes from choice and voice. Giving Ss authentic learning opportunities that allow them to showcase what they learn while making real world connections or even contributions. I tell my Ss that they are the future everyday, and I must treat them as thus. #LearnLAP
A4: Build relationships with EVERY kid. Stop punishing kids for late work/mistakes. Give them the opportunity to correct everything! No grade is final. Be present and available. #LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
a3: I use the acronym “groups” on an anchor chart. Obviously I have the ss “come up with this” but it looks like this: G- get along, r- respect each other o- on task all the time, u- use time wisely and use quiet voices, p- participate. S- stay in Groups. , : #learnlap
As a leader of a class, school or district, remember to give when you don't have to; care for others, grow continuously; live a life of character; empower others; serve with humility. #LearnLAP
"What question did I MEAN to ask?" or "What would have been a better example here?" are powerful questions. Demonstrating humility and empowering Ss to be helpful goes a long way! #learnlap
A4: For many students, respect is a lost art. We need to model this every day and progressively teach students how to lead the crew in a positive way. #WALearnLap#LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
A4: Be present. Invest in their success. Encourage risk-taking. If they want to set sail and chart a new territory, you get up in the crow's nest and guide the way. A wise captain @casas_jimmy once said, "We model what we get." #learnlap
A4: Build relationships with every kid! Be available and preset. Don't punish Ss for late work/mistakes. Then assign an "expert of the day" or two to help students as needed. Soon, they begin to seek each other's guidance. #LearnLAP
a3: I use the acronym “groups” on an anchor chart. Obviously I have the ss “come up with this” but it looks like this: G- get along, r- respect each other o- on task all the time, u- use time wisely and use quiet voices, p- participate. S- stay in Groups. , : #learnlap
A4: Students know if the Ts care about them. I don't remember a lot about what I learned in school, but I do remember a lot about what it felt like to learn with teachers who cared about me.I want my students to know they are AMAZING people-not just students in my room. #LearnLAP
Q4: A captain is selected because they are respected not feared. How can we as the captains of our ship, empower our pirates to lead the crew? #LearnLAP
#4 #LearnLAP I think Ss pick up their leadership styles, in part, from their teachers. When we model leadership qualities such as being purposeful and inclusive, good things happen. Also, clear structure and keeping an eye on the pacing contribute to a successful experience.
A4) too often we give the same small number of kids leadership opportunities claiming the others "aren't ready." Becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. #learnlap
A5: What you allow, you encourage; what you permit, you promote & I know my goals and I intend to hold myself more accountable than anyone else. #LearnLAP
A5: This is where shared ownership and buy-in are important. When you care about your teammates, the last thing you want to do is let them down. #LearnLAP
A5 Reflect often, create consistent measurers and checklists for success. Allow the crew to self report and offer opportunities for change/growth. #learnlap
#learnlap A5: Make sure Ss know how valuable their preparation and contribution are to the learning environment. When they need to be held accountable, let them know that the class missed out on what they offer. I believe that nobody who feels needed wants to let anyone down.
A5: The crew need to learn more responsibility. We, as teachers, need to accept that along with the successes will come failures. Turn the failures into learning experiences and move on. #learnlap#walearnlap
A5: Constant conferencing has been my best strategy. Checking to see where they are personally - both with school work and as people. Help them set goals and ask what they want me to ask them about later. #LearnLAP
A4) Believe in them, support them, put them in leadership roles where they might be nervous but it makes them bolder. If they have a great idea go with it and support them. #learnlap
A5: Establish clear guidelines and be sure that all students are aware of expectations. That way, no one is caught off guard and everyone understands their responsibilities. #WALearnLap#LearnLAP
A5 Ss need to see the gradual professions towards mastery. Not everything has to be written down or graded, but Ss need lots of formative feedback to guide their learning. Goal setting helps too because then they are accountable to themselves #LearnLAP
A5 Ss know that all work must be completed. Late work is not late work...it just took them longer to master the skill. Standards are completed at their pace. Allows for greater differentiation. #LearnLAP
A5 Be transparent with what objectives you are working towards and give feedback and opportunities for growth. Don't give them the choice to bail out. #LearnLAP
A5 To hold crew members accountable, clear purpose and expectations must be set. If the crew doesn't understand the purpose, they may just float aimlessly. You can't get to your destination if you don't know where you are going! #learnLAP
A5: When you give students the authority to create and lead the work, they want to see the activity succeed. Give them opportunities for reflection and benchmarks to measure progress. #LearnLAP
A5: Encourage Ss when the right thing is done. Create a community of supportive Ss with responsibilities. Accountability should be displayed starting with the teacher. #LearnLAP#gccedu
A5: I am proud to admit that my ss started blogging TODAY! I need to scaffold it a ton more with them, but it was definitely a start! Blogging about the experience and how I set it up after I’m done chatting (hopefully) #learnlap
A5 Ss need to see the gradual progressions towards mastery. Not everything has to be written down or graded, but Ss need lots of formative feedback to guide their learning. Goal setting helps too because then they are accountable to themselves #LearnLAP
A5: My goal for the semester (we have block scheduling so I got all new Ss) was being clear in teaching my procedures and routines. If everyone knows the expectations forwards and backwards, they start to hold each other accountable! #LearnLAP
A5: Set and model expectations based on trust, responsibility, reliability and ownership. One of the keys to success that is often overlooked is "owning" success. If you want to reach your goals you have to own success and failures. It starts with the captain. #learnlap
For students, never miss the opportunity to share with Ss that they are responsible for what they say and do but have to be morally accountable for the choices they make. #learnlap
A5: I really think this passages sum up the importance of keeping our crew members accountable...dont forget, we are all on the same ship!!!! #learnlap
A4: I provide 4 levels of math practice (skill/prob. solving/application/extension). Ss choose entry point and decide when they master topics. I post keys around the room so Ss can self check and move around the room. To help. Then Ss reflect on progress and adjust. #LearnLAP
Q6: Did you know that a pirate captain has no more rights than any other crew member unless in battle? What's the role of the teacher during collaboration?
#LearnLAP
A6: Essentially being a model student. Act as a team player, let students speak their ideas, offer suggestions, listen to theirs, and form new ideas. Students will play off of what you do. #LearnLAP
A5. Establishing guidlines, Ss conferencing, 1:1 help if needed by peers or myself, encourage them to believe in themselves and that not everyone thinks or solves problems the same way! #learnlap
A5 #LearnLAP I reward positive behavior with table points. I never take them away. At the end of the week, the "winning" table gets a class privilege. This encourages Ss to support one another and builds in accountability WITHOUT me.
A6: During collaboration, teachers monitor interactions and give feedback where necessary. Teachers ask questions to steer students in a positive direction. #LearnLAP

#learnlap A6: Get out of the way and let Ss collaborate. Pretty simple.
At worst: praise Ss for offering ideas, make sure Ss are responding to each other and not just waiting for their turn to talk, ask the quiet S what he thinks.
Q6: Did you know that a pirate captain has no more rights than any other crew member unless in battle? What's the role of the teacher during collaboration?
#LearnLAP
A6: I’ve always been told the smartest person in the room is the room, so we need to meet Ss where they are at in a humble manor. Ts don’t know it all. Ss don’t know it all, but together we can figure it out. #LearnLAP#gccedu
A6: Remind everyone of the goal and EMPOWER. On the off chance that there is a "battle" greater support may be needed, but that typically means asking even more questions to keep things moving forward. #LearnLAP

A5- natural consequences are powerful when learning is personalized and relevant-be empathetic and supportive, but let the consequence happen. #LearnLAP
A6: In Math I think its letting the students make mistakes. Its so hard sometimes but they need to discover for themselves and not just be told they are wrong. #LearnLAP

A3: Captains earn respect by rewarding good outcomes while not overreacting to bad ones. Turn the bad outcomes into teachable moments, Heck, even admit it a moment was botched and laugh it off. Its good to show that failures aren't the end of the world. #learnlap#waLearnLap
I use Google forms and ask questions based on the assessment. What went well? Was there a breakdown in communication? Did everyone contribute to the project? Were there issues? How did you work to resolve these issues? What would you have done differently? #LearnLAP
Getting out of the way give Ss the chance to think and do on their own. Many expect the T to intervene so they sit back waiting rather than becoming involved. And as the T, you can learn so much from watching and listening. #learnLAP
A6 during collaborative groups time I sit back and listen and take notes of what skills Ss are showing mastery of and need additional time on. During whole clas time we all are equal voices in the discussion. I try to model skills like repeating for clarification. #LearnLAP
A6 - I work hard to observe & give feedback whenever my students are working collaboratively. Some feedback is directed towards individuals or partnerships, but most is shared with the whole class! If I think of something else that needs to be taught, I interrupt. #LearnLAP
Q7: From sailing courses to other major decisions, each voice on the ship is heard through a vote. What is your #1 go to collaboration for students to have their voice heard?
#LearnLAP
A6: Questioning, questioning, questioning! I’ll sit with my students and listen to them talk. When they all get stuck and look at me (I guess thinking I’ll give an answer) I just ask them about something I see that nudges them in the right direction! #LearnLAP

#learnlap Agreed. Once my Ss have learned to collaborate well and have earned trust, I sometimes leave the room when they start looking to me to verify their answers. They get the game....now they have to prove their conjecture!
Thanks for the chat tonight #learnlap! I hope you'll join me and several others on Thursday night at 9pm ET in #waledchat when we discuss building relationships!
A7: Inspired from @alicekeeler I started doing weekly check-ins in google classroom. I require and expect feedback from students. Students tend to speak up more digital then in the whole class. GC lets me make sure every voice is heard #learnlap

Thanks to everyone who chatted tonight! Special thanks goes out to @bmiller_FSTS for moderating tonight's #LearnLAP!
Join us next week as @KatieMc827 moderates using a VERY unique chat format: "Choose Your Own Adventure!"
For now, check out #tlap for more great discussion!
A7 Book clubs, guilds, learning partnerships all are ways to collaborate with each other. I also have a weekly round table where we talk about classroom structures and try to adapt to suit our needs. I’m a better t because I ask what works and how to come things #LearnLAP
A7 #LearnLAP@Padlet --even though they charge too much! Love that kids can post, react, comment.
Equally committed to @Flipgrid. Everyone's got a voice--even the quiet ones.
Both are quick, and they're an app on the phone if you don't have 1:1.
#LearnLAP A7: Honestly, at this point in the year, my "go-to" activity for collaboration and making sure each Ss voice is heard is to put a problem on the board that's just beyond what they know and say "figure this out" as I walk down the hall. They got it from there.
A7: Survey on Google forms asking ng for honest feedback. The best part about math class is... Math would be better if... Mrs. Sopko can help me by... Etc... #LearnLAP

#LearnLAP
A7: Padlet, TodaysMeet, PollEverywhere, Flipgrid... Lots of ways for students to have a voice. I like to use low tech ways as well, like having a question on the board and allowing all students to write their answers and respond to each other w/o talking. #learnlap

A7: If I had a classroom now, I would try to establish cogen meetings with groups of Ss like @chrisemdin talks about. These meeting can help to reach all Ss in a comfortable way. This also builds relationships with Ss, so they may be more comfortable to talk #LearnLAP#gccedu
