a1 play in the classroom-- never thought about it before! guess I'd better now
Ed Ventura Bellevue Nebraska teach K-5 technology in Omaha
I didn't have a lake!! :) Water creates so many opportunities for fun, healthy activity, socializing.
A1. Play in the classroom is great way to build social emotional skills, a way to build language skills, play is a skill builder.
A1 All wing fit creativity to flow is my idea of play. helps me with this
A1: The freedom to explore. The ability to dream.
I haven't thought about play in the classroom really, looking forward to what others say
A1 play= learning via collaboration teamwork fun
Play, to me, means providing opportunities for social interaction through games or hands on activities https://t.co/VlDnFmZyrD
A1 Allowing for creativity to flow is my idea of play. helps me with this
Someday’s I pass it @ the store and am tempted to buy it just to play when I am stressed.
A1. I guess my answer is simplistic, but I just think of unstructured time for them to explore and have fun. No topic in mind.
Me, too! My gpa crafted homemade dollhouses; gma made hand stitched barbie doll clothing. Hours of acting/roleplaying.
I completely agree! https://t.co/OCYbYwCW4U
A1. Play in the classroom is great way to build social emotional skills, a way to build language skills, play is a skill builder.
I have my kids design games and we play games from time to time but I guess I don't feel it's...deliberate/consistent enough
True....it's also fun to play along with students getting to know them on a more personal level https://t.co/5S6bC6KeqG
A1. I guess my answer is simplistic, but I just think of unstructured time for them to explore and have fun. No topic in mind.
some of my the best interactions came when I played fluxx w/ 8th gr. ss.
Sometimes it's hard to make time for play when we have so many things to get through in a day
A1: 2 parts: 1)Doing what ever your mind, hands and brain want with no outcomes posted. 2)Laughter and giggles with anything!
A1: I don't think in terms of play as much as I concentrate on engaging environment and letting Ss create more than consume.
That's wonderful! That time can build amazing relationships! https://t.co/UKcrgoNmY2
some of my the best interactions came when I played fluxx w/ 8th gr. ss.
A1: Play is a time to discover and explore your passions. For me, teaching feels like play because I love to do it.
I would agree with this! The only reason I think of play is we have Preferred Activity Time for 15 m in my shed.
Marah, 2nd grade teacher in MHK. My favorite activity was playing outside, no matter what we were playing!
Good evening! A bit late to the game... Lisa Douthit Turner District here
Love that you are keeping it simple and to the point!
Agreed. When you create an engaging environment sometimes it feels like play even if we don't view it that way
Play in the classrm=freeing kids to let their inner learner out to explore the environment & tinker, challenge, create. Safe place
I created kinesthetic learning games for review. Led to lots of learning and more studying because of the competition it brought
YES!! Notice how we're all reminiscing about play as a child--with fondness, glee. Learning happens through PLAY!
So true! Right out of the Maker Manifesto! https://t.co/yNqJycbkdz
A1: I don't think in terms of play as much as I concentrate on engaging environment and letting Ss create more than consume.
A2. Someone touched on this already but play allows for social and emotional growth as well as collaborative time
A2 Social and emotional skills - learn to get along - its real world situations
a2
Play is essential to being human. Art, drama, liturgy, even research are, ultimately, play!
A2 when I do make time to take my kids outside and let them for real play I learn so much about them. Good relationship building.
Play helps children apply the social skills they will need as they continue to grow as human beings https://t.co/JTlnvTlB1v
I like that you put play and passion together. These are the times (at recess) I sometimes see Ss the most passionate.
A2) This is how students develop a sense of wonder, build social skills and how to cope in the world
A2: It's valuable for their brains to problem solve with out the pressure of feeling there is a right or wrong answer.
A2 We need our Ss to play to LEARN! And be able to self-monitor
A2) In order for risk-taking to take place, everything can't always be super serious. Allow play for having fun, enjoying school
A2. To relax, to learn in a way that is collaborative, to introduce realia, to provide Ss with background knowledge.
Preach it! https://t.co/5dgjiJsAct
Play in the classrm=freeing kids to let their inner learner out to explore the environment & tinker, challenge, create. Safe place
A2: Play released stress and energy, allows for creativity, and encourages exercise
A2 also I mean, team work, strategizing, imaginative play, all important skills
A2: Play is how you discover who you are & what you are passionate about. Assembly lines work for cars. They don't work for kids.
I notice kids & adults equate learning, in SCHL setting, w/seriousness. Not used to playful learning at school!
I've seen the same thing. How to burst that crazy thought?
A2: In HS classroom, love to give them a chance to do more than just sit and get. Love to get them up and moving, interacting.
A1: Eric from Frontenac! Play is having fun interacting in class. So everyday here!
A2: Ss need to let loose at school. We demand so much. Because of brain development. The list goes on https://t.co/QndhGiXoHX
Social Skills! That is such a good one and true. Talk about a struggle with Ss who parents text all day and night.
check out and . Both about movement in the classroom and play.
Self-discovery. Had not thought of this but it is so true. If you can’t find yourself at school your lost
Outside play for kids changed in KC ~ late 80's. In 70's & early 80's-I played all over neighborhood all day w/friends.
A3: Because we cannot digitize passion. We need to foster passion & creativity.
Adults play too, but either don't admit it or see it as a part of their growth too.
You aren't alone that change to inside play has hit rural Kansas https://t.co/hctTkcHw8g
Outside play for kids changed in KC ~ late 80's. In 70's & early 80's-I played all over neighborhood all day w/friends.
Reading all of this makes you notice how as educators we know it’s importance but others take it out of ed so easily!
my nephews think I lie, "I road my bike this far or here or there." They rarely leave their block
A3 In think it is outside of many individuals comfort zones.
Bc we feel the pressure of teaching hundreds of standards! Not a good excuse, but true for me! https://t.co/fb5vazc2Yq
“If you want creative workers, give them enough time to play” -John Cleese
LOVE LOVE LOVE...Just talked to today! They are so great!
a3 mistaken notion of what edu means. Forming a new gen of people, not filling forms to satisfy the old gen.
A3 because there's an overwhelming amount of stuff to fit in...hard to remember to make time
A3) I think many Ts are afraid of play because it doesn't feel rigorous. Heaven forbid Ss enjoy coming to school!!
A3: I honestly believe adults forget what it is like to be kids. We are too far removed. We r also pressured to have test data
A3. A focus on things other than the whole child or social emotional learning. No true understanding of what play is about.
A3. I know our schedules are regimented so we can meet standards. That's the problem. We are so focused on specific outcomes.
but I believe school should be fun...so we allow Ss to realize learning is fun 😊 https://t.co/7LNW79dOL2
A3) I think many Ts are afraid of play because it doesn't feel rigorous. Heaven forbid Ss enjoy coming to school!!
A3 also trying to "justify" it if others don't view it as good use of time
I wonder if as adults if we play more, we would used in more in class. https://t.co/0bVp8BL8q8
A3: I honestly believe adults forget what it is like to be kids. We are too far removed. We r also pressured to have test data
A3: Engagement, creation, movement, collaboration...just not what HS looks like to some Ts. It's hard to find the balance.
A3: Because you can't objectively grade play. Somehow school has become a place to earn grades, rather than a place to learn.
A3) Need more training on the correlation of active learning leading to improved learning, which equates to higher retainment
By we I mean the state board of education and politicians who have never stepped foot in a classroom today to see what it's like
A3: Sad, but true. Sometimes teachers forget that they are teaching students and not just content.
Risk taking=inherent to natural learner inside all of us. Kids need play--often don't get unstruct'd play at home.
A3) I think covered this. Teacher think quiet + order + conformity = serious student & more learning .
Yes! Finding those way to blanche and incorporate the play in the learning outcomes and process of the info!
Does the blame fall on teachers or are they carrying out demands from Admin or District
This is painfully true! I am so concerned for the state of education. We r miseducating. https://t.co/nS4SgJNXmS
A3: Because you can't objectively grade play. Somehow school has become a place to earn grades, rather than a place to learn.
A3) If research is on the side of play, why do Ts cave to pressures? Can we not justify unstructured time based on research?
The paper and the marks are the Ss ‘ultimate goals’ during crunch time. We have become so dependent on the data!
I see same. I LOVED my freedom to roam, explore, discover. Every day an adventure. Friends all over neighborhood.
# of Ts have said they can't participate in Global School Play Day, b/c their school requires everything is tied to a standard.
My class always looked chaotic, but the students could explain to anyone what they were learning and why, that's what mattered
Yes, if "play" were a standard, we would have to be able to define it, measure it, grade it and lose its relevancy.
Sorry folks, I gotta cut out. I have enjoyed my limited time.
I'm so bad at this. I feel guilty if you can't see or "measure" the learning as it is happening.
Hi . Joining late but excited about the topic!
I say, then find a standard. 😎
So, so, sad! Let them play!
A3:I believe we have learned to teach to the test. It takes a lot of effort to create a valuable game/playfor the current content.
if play is best, why are we hestitating? https://t.co/aA9xb2Dcdt
Q5: it means never apologizing for doing what's in the best interest of your students.
I hear people saying it's all about the data. Doesn't research say play and unstructured time increase learning?
My young teachers don't understand my https://t.co/2qktUQqbYz
I'm so bad at this. I feel guilty if you can't see or "measure" the learning as it is happening.
JENA SHERRY is heeere!! :) Hello Jena! I shall see you in Feb at !
a4
Friday reading time=games, building, and collaboration! Need to extend further, but a start.
A4 My strongest is imaginary play with which btw is an art standard 😉 there are standards for play out there
Yes you will, sweetie!! Midwest Edu bonding needed! cc:
Oh no! Am I no longer a "young teacher"?! Dang!!!
A4. It doesn't happen as often as I like but I try to incorporate play into science as much as possible.
I've heard early primary stories where Ts can only give kids 10 minutes of free play. That must change. https://t.co/lhxpmPZU1K
So, so, sad! Let them play!
A4: Vocab games during reading. Tons of math games and apps. might not be "play" but it feels that way to SS.
A3) Perhaps the focus on "soft skills" will help Ts become more comfortable with play and unstructured time...
A4: every lesson has some play/toy involved. Whether it was a ruler game contest online or making a boat from foil.
A4 Recess x2 each day (we have 20 minutes/recess)
Sounds absolutely fabulous. Empowering. Nod to each inner learner. https://t.co/isExpx6Kug

Friday reading time=games, building, and collaboration! Need to extend further, but a start.
That is a really great point! https://t.co/vlK6Mxha8z
A3) Perhaps the focus on "soft skills" will help Ts become more comfortable with play and unstructured time...
A4:Lots of mvmt & collaboration, innovative ways to do 'traditional' things like vocabulary instruction, etc.
A4) competitive games, Ss creating games, basically giving Ss ownership. Their voices led to all types of laughter & learning
A4) Today started Ss exploration of several stations. Freedom was a challenge 4 most, but so good 4 them!
Kids today don't believe the freedom we had back in the day. https://t.co/InPHPyPPTj
my nephews think I lie, "I road my bike this far or here or there." They rarely leave their block
Lol! That's what I did in B/M. Find a standard to justify & move forward w/o looking back. 😇
I feel the same way! Genius hour lets my kids work on passions and therefore feels like play!
doing similar with 8 sci, some struggle w/o me nagging, er, controlling every moment, but rest love!
Today, if Ps let their kids explore, roam neighborhood freely they are seen as irresponsible parents.
A4: My favorite is telling jokes, dancing, talking funny and laughing. We love to laugh/be goofy.
Well played Jena, well played 😉 https://t.co/qTIDJWfBBh
Lol! That's what I did in B/M. Find a standard to justify & move forward w/o looking back. 😇
Love the collab part. Continue to try to get my Ss connected outside the classroom, Twitter, etc.
A4 As K-5 technology teacher I allow standing, interactive site & conversation to happen more often vs enforcing peace & quiet
A4 they create games over their grammar from time to time. They amaze me with what they create.
I played soccer, so I designed a lot of learning games using soccer in class. That led to lots of play & fitness
Play in the Classroom. Come on in and join the fun!
USD 497 should consider this movement! shared on it tonight.
. awesome! Love it! I have a play and tinkering in the classroom group
I'm in one of the KS pilot schools for A Plus schools (arts intergraded) great success in adding "play"
This wk introing a hybrid to 3rd -5th- love the challenge 4 Ss!
How did this look? I am intrigued… Did you have a ball they would kick in the room?
Great discussion tonight! Last question coming up in 2 minutes!
I often watch kids play and they are so engulfed in the moment yet that rarely happens in schools
I was looking forward to tonight but my kids aren't cooperating. I'll have to read through the chat when everyone's asleep!
… and the funny thing is, this is what we strive for and slave away at lesson designs for as our outcome!
. glad I saw your tweet! Just got home from robotics so this fits perfectly!
Thnx peeps for letting this WI girl crash your chat tonight! 😎
It's awesome started in NC all research based... 20 years of research are our trainers https://t.co/9cLAjIhTk5
Love this idea...need to know more!
. as the awesome points out, teachers can learn so much about a student by watching them play!
We are allotted 10-15 minutes at the end of the day besides recess. Sadly sometimes I have Ss that choose to work
If you haven't watched the Ted Talk on the topic of play, by Peter Gray....check it out. It is very thought provoking.
A5: technology is a pathway to be more efficient and should be natural part of process. It cannot be forced or layered
A5 Some do & it has its place but play acting out a point in history for example can have more learning power
I can't speculate on whether we rely too much on tech, but I think it's important to have a balance. https://t.co/glD3fdWoVq
Hi Julie! Openended, no-single-rt-answer activs. Being held hostage to finding 'rightt' answer stifles! https://t.co/6syGpPaxoe
A4:Lots of mvmt & collaboration, innovative ways to do 'traditional' things like vocabulary instruction, etc.
A5) We played Clue in my Problem Solving class and Monopoly in my accounting class. Kids love old fashioned board games!
. YES! I was just talking about this today. A regular day is full of bells and transitions and little time to engage
A5: We need to have a good balance. Don't throw out all the board games, playing cards, play doh, Hot Wheels, and dice! : )
play dough! I always forget to bring that out when it is time for play!
Please help spread the word about Global School Play Day! I think this is a great event for all kids. https://t.co/Oy6MF2hlF9
Man even HS kids still love to play a,aging what some oil based clay, even play doh will do in their hands https://t.co/fEiTRFkZir
A5: We need to have a good balance. Don't throw out all the board games, playing cards, play doh, Hot Wheels, and dice! : )
so true. is a gr8 resource for ideas for matchbox cars!
A5) Play goes beyond technology even when incorporated-can foster a play outside tech. Look at infinite rewards of
A5 Funded by to get board games to use with my Ss
I did Global School Play Day last yr. Kids LOVED it. I recommend it. Kids need it! https://t.co/HVm52jUTAP
Please help spread the word about Global School Play Day! I think this is a great event for all kids. https://t.co/Oy6MF2hlF9
They were in 2 lines, pass the ball saying answer to question, dribble it up & do toe touches https://t.co/YfVM5Xeu4u
How did this look? I am intrigued… Did you have a ball they would kick in the room?
I often bring in my kids toys they no longer play with into my room and they are always a hit with students
speaking of play, , anyone know a person who needs to unload some legos? My class needs some!
Marking my cal! Looking at site! THNX! Love Global connects!
Thank you so much for an amazing tonight! Be sure to like and share our Facebook page with your friends. https://t.co/7t1ueB3DFu
If kids spend most their time 'playing' individually on computer/ipad--does not qualify as vibrant play. Social aspect necessary!
Got that on my list too! I want a vertical Lego Wall!
Agree! One math app that allows for the social aspect is . Ss can play against each other. My Ss love it!
Tech is great but not needed for everything. Ss need to get off the screen & have fun interacting with peers. Builds social skills
This is ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Why tech as creation, production, collaboration and connection is also necessary!
reach out to parents. So many would love to rid their homes of Lego
Loved talking about play on tonight! Grateful for connections with new friends and old. Play along on FB: https://t.co/dXgsgvpPeu
How is the Echo, Stacey. I'm intrigued by it! https://t.co/VrGMP7ChGr
We recently added to our household ! Read your blog post & look forward to learning more tips from you!
Great meeting you tonight on Twitter and !! Have a great evening.
Great tonight! Was way too short! THNX!
Add to that a place for standardized tests- sad when I did Ss struggled to find passion topic https://t.co/kJR8zo3QDM
A3: Because you can't objectively grade play. Somehow school has become a place to earn grades, rather than a place to learn.
Briliant, Brandi! ! I would have LOVED that as a student.
seems modern schooling has always been about marks or grades. Whole industrial system needs a reboot!
It always amazes me the number of truly awesome educators in Kansas! Great
Thank you! Have an awesome week!
Agreed. To extend this, if kids don't get to play when they're kids, how will they do it as adults?
A most honorable and welcome guest art thou. :) Gnite . https://t.co/hRYV3IyRrZ
Thnx peeps for letting this WI girl crash your chat tonight! 😎
