Hey everyone! Gabrielle checking in from VT
Q2 is coming up in 1 minute!
A2 Students need to celebrate growth and new learning. It’s about the excitement of new knowledge that matters!
I like to encourage them to make their skills useful. Make a place for themselves in the workforce.
Use Visual Thinking strategies from Harvard -- get them to "show" their thoughts to help them build confidence

A2: Begin with parents. Prove it's about the learning, standards based grading is excellent here.
A2: Encourage diverse possible answers; offer unique opportunities to respond via art, music, writing

A2: For too long all we know is how to "do school" - to be "compliant", Ts & Ss need to move out of comfort zone to really learn
No challenge, no risk, no growth. https://t.co/iNWj5D8eN6
A2: For too long all we know is how to "do school" - to be "compliant", Ts & Ss need to move out of comfort zone to really learn

Yes, we must stop grading and teach students to talk about their learning in a meaningful way
Wouldn't that be amazing!! One day.
Agreed, reflection is such a new thing for learners, yet so powerful. Parents, teacher, & students learn so much
A3. I think Ts can promote self-awareness via modelling, questioning, & leading reflection on class interactions/processes.
If students learn to reflect early, it takes away the lies that so many students tell themselves about their progress and growth.
Are you ready for Q4? It's up in 60 seconds!
thanks :) I will share some resources too, but I'm winding down my son right now
Ordered and anxiously awaiting the new book. Hoping to learn more about learner profiles.
And it becomes an internal, self regulatory mechanism instead of imposes from the outside "from upon high"
Or....do this behind closed doors and show the progress "after the fact"- my method. https://t.co/EaXsMjC78J

Student portfolios work well too. Love to see what kids think.
A3. Encourage them to ask questions and make mistakes. When students help drive their learning, awareness of potential grows.

. is on and Q2 was on compliancy & going beyond grades - we're now on Q4 on empathy https://t.co/j2N345qoqH
Tell me what you need and I can get you the resources - I have lots
A4: Start with the culture in the classroom. Extend the reach to global learning. It opens door so Ss can learn from others.
I am going to think about that deeply. Can I read a blog post to visualize the experience?
What if- students came to us without negative self talk and beliefs in abilities and not inabilities?
A4: Ss choice allows them to shine. When they share their learning, they pick an area of strength. It let's other Ss see it.
A4.Curiosity for those who encountered the problem previously helps in overcoming challenges. Knowing they're not alone empowers
Then that would be the perfect foundation on which to build a learner. T's usually have to excavate to get there
So true...the value of knowing when to guide students towards unlearning. https://t.co/KlD9U58iId
Then that would be the perfect foundation on which to build a learner. T's usually have to excavate to get there
Let's discuss nurturing curiosity in Q5!
I teach young Ss & it is amazing when they come to me and say they aren't good at something. Work to change that.
Yes teachers could take risks and create environments that encourage discovery https://t.co/mygJF0XIYz
What if- students came to us without negative self talk and beliefs in abilities and not inabilities?
A4 To address empathy we need to help liners challenge their own biases & become more flexible & adaptive thinkers.
It has to stop! Until then, we have to un-do it regularly to cultivate growthful learners. https://t.co/PsoWWpuZ2Y
I teach young Ss & it is amazing when they come to me and say they aren't good at something. Work to change that.
Language is an essential factor in this. That is the hardest art of teaching growth mindset & living it
A3: T needs to know the S Help foster the dreams and interests. Listen to their hopes for the future. Let them know they matter.
Teachers NEED to take the risks beyond their restrictions to create true growth and change. https://t.co/l9vidaXJ5O

A5: Provide the provocations, promote authentic inquiry, spark the flame and let it go, watch and listen, then give feedback
A5 We need to help students to Unlearn past In-box expectation and practice wondering daily.
Let students experience a forum that they never thought or felt possible! https://t.co/KjIPQOvRti
A5: Provide the provocations, promote authentic inquiry, spark the flame and let it go, watch and listen, then give feedback
making the case for wonderment for learners is something I wish more T's would do. It gets lost after 1st grade.
A5: Don't structure course content around ?'s you created. Allow space 4 students to ask & answer their own ?'s about content
A4. Ss exercise/develop empathy when learning is others-centred, e.g., design thinking, issues-based inquiry, service, etc.
A5: Model asking questions, tell your story, expose student to different speakers, careers, places. Help them to see the world.
A5. Curiosity drives one’s search for personal relevance. We can promote it with learner agency/autonomy.
30-8th graders, 11 different student led integrated tech projects; infused with conference time and reflections on both ends
A4. Ss exercise/develop empathy when learning is others-centred: design thinking, issues-based inquiry, service..
A5: Let S's have the freedom to express their thoughts, feelings & needs...then listen & respond with choice.
I love Mystery Skype. It was a good place to start and build from.
Totally agree. We need to value the reflective process more. Give more time and focus to it
A5 Open units/projects by having Ss ask their own questions to guide the learning throughout
Unless WE recreate grades 2-? in a new way that fosters creative reflection and thinking. https://t.co/jEKLDokp4f
making the case for wonderment for learners is something I wish more T's would do. It gets lost after 1st grade.
Mystery Skyped w/ Texas day before the Blue Jays began the sweep against the rangers. Wild & fun timing

A5 Open units/projects by having Ss ask their own questions to guide the learning throughout
Just mentioned this...why can't Ts share struggles and plans to improve home so Ps understand PL is a process?
Ss can use google forms to generate surveys from their peers to guide projects
Absolutely! When students have a vested interest, they will naturally be curious.
I like the way you asserted the strategy, Mark. Are you thinking about a particular grade range?
We had Skype planned with Florida and it has been canceled twice. Learned a lot about hurricanes.
The skills like empathy often referred to "soft" created the strongest building blocks for living
I have seen this work from grades 4-12. Middle School is the most effective though! https://t.co/9smJgYPfNs
I like the way you asserted the strategy, Mark. Are you thinking about a particular grade range?
I think T's w/out a high level of emotional intelligence awareness have a hard time with this. It is SO important.
Do you support learners' passions? Let's discuss how to help them discover their purpose in Q6! https://t.co/CIBbpFrBZv
AGREED. That is why some need guidance, but we cannot allow them to stay stuck https://t.co/R8ZEfEpjgn
I think T's w/out a high level of emotional intelligence awareness have a hard time with this. It is SO important.
A6: Allow students to craft project or instructional driving questions and/or provide choice in products and work students do
A6: It is through passion that purpose can be discovered. Let them use what they love to show their learning- choice and voice
A6 Teachers can partner with students on the journey and in the excitement.
Wondering if soft skills may also be the strongest building blocks for learning...
A6: Allowing students 2 find how a passion of theirs connects 2 physics & using that to drive "Genius Hour"
A6: Fill their day with opportunities. Let them shine and celebrate their successes. Push when they need it.
A6: Sharing my quote wrote years ago “Go with strengths & interests, find passions to discover purpose” https://t.co/sOmRfnVy5E
A6: Provide unwavering support w/o judgement. We all learn/grow/achieve differently. Adults often need to remind selves of that.
A5: Design-thinking , wonder, INQUIRY! S must learn to question everything.
RT A6: Sharing my quote wrote years ago “Go with strengths & interests, find passions to discover purpose”
So true The soft skills are what Ss will need for their future - stop teaching the Googleable https://t.co/XWnxQ0OLa9
Wondering if soft skills may also be the strongest building blocks for learning...
And when this is forgotten, the creativity and empathy goes away. Sad! https://t.co/JcYbXLV8cH
A6: Provide unwavering support w/o judgement. We all learn/grow/achieve differently. Adults often need to remind selves of that.
A6 Cheerlead and have a reflection session with students to learn what the learning meant to them.

A6: Fill their day with opportunities. Let them shine and celebrate their successes. Push when they need it.
Yep. And that's when learning, and the joy of learning, ends.
