Hi #admin2b! First time here and joining from Delaware. Balance this weekend meant enjoying activities with my kids, readind and researching for college, and grading papers for my 4th and 5th graders.
I teach 4th & 5th graders. They lead their conferences during the 1st marking period while I circulate. In the 2nd marking period I meet with the student and parent, and final marking period is another student-led conference. #admin2b
A1: I recommend letting parents speak first and then go over the strenghts and the support teachers might need from parents to best meet the students' needs. #admin2b
Hello #admin2b Anabel from NC. Balance for me was leaving school early last Friday to catch a flight to NYC for a weekend girls trip with my daughter. Lots of teachable moments!
I love this - letting parents speak first. We (educators) tend to have an agenda and rattle on. Before we know it time is up. #fliptheconference#admin2b

Love this idea of having the parents speak first! Even my student led conferences, the students have their agenda. May need to find ways we can include families, engaging them rather than presenting to them. #admin2b
A1. When working with Parents, I choose to do student led conferences. I like the student to try and explain what's taking place to P. I serve as a backup, and facilator. But, I also answer concerns and questions. #admin2b
YES!!! well done. The light is in sight. What's your dissertation on? You have to be very focused and deliberate about your writing time! I adopted two boys the year I was writing. OUCH! #admin2b
I've used student led conferences for the past 3 years. One of my favorite nights of the school year! Always get great feedback from my students and families. #admin2b
That looks AMAZING!! My balance will come next week when I go to NOLA for a conference. 5 days away from the regular routine of home/kids/zoo. Plus filling my bucket! #admin2b
A2. I attended one with my daughter at her middle school, where it was just the two of us sitting in a room chatting over her portfolio. I wished the teacher was in there to answer questions that I had to dive in deeper! #admin2b
a2: Student-led conferences allows students to take ownership of their learning, provides an opportunity for goal-setting, & families are more inclined to attend student-led conferences. #admin2b
A2) We’ve not done them at my school, but I think they’re great. A local elementary teacher (@juliakraft29) is doing them this week and invited me to come sit in since her students will be coming to my HS in the future. Great idea!

EXCELLENT _ there is an under representation of ELs in GT. Came out in our audit but seems to be a national trend. I look forward to reading your work. #admin2b#boone2020@jlvw76

My student-led conferences are only between parents & students, too. I always let P know they can reach out to me if they have ?'s. I also meet with P & S during 2nd marking period. I find when I'm there it becomes convo with me defeating purpose of student-led conf. #admin2b
A3: Having an interpreter if you know that there is a language barrier makes it easier for the parents to come into the school for conferences. I also think utilizing technology like Skype or Zoom for busy parents is a creative way to maintain lines of communication. #admin2b
A3: I find since the students are leading student led conferences they speak the same "language" so can sometimes express their learning better than I could! #admin2b

A3) Whether it’s open house or a behavior conference, you have to remember that everyone is coming into it is coming with their own story and in light of their own paradigm.
We have to try to meet them where they are and build from there.

Wrote this a few years back, but I hope some of you find it helpful for parent conferences. "Tips for Connecting with Non-English Speaking Parents" https://t.co/AgDau5yjG2#admin2b
A3. Having an intrepreter helps, or the child speaks the native language and can translate what's being spoken. You can also use technology and type in what you wish to say and have it translate the language! #admin2b
A4) You welcome parents into your building by WELCOMING them when they come. Whether it’s a football game or college admissions night, make time to talk to them and to learn about their hopes and dreams for their child.
#admin2b
A4. We welcome them in to see Ss work, parent engagement nights such as math game night, reading cafe, scavenger hunt night, etc, donut's with adults. #admin2b
A4. I think you need to do an audit of your front lobby. Is it welcoming - do the first people you see smile, welcome you. Do you see yourself represented anywhere in the school - by language/culture? #admin2b
A4. Excellent point. When P come through those doors, the first people they are greeted by is the office staff! They are welcoming! Whomever they encounter inthe school should also continue the welcoming culture! #admin2b
