The school year has just finished, or will be finishing soon, for most educators in the U.S. We are thrilled that you’re taking an hour out of your schedule during this stressful time to be with us tonight! We’re certain we will gather GREAT ideas from our #KaganChat friends!
Jody: Principal from Edmonton, Canada. Home from a busy day before heading out once again. We are still a month away from ending but just a busy as ever. #KaganChat
#KaganChat A1. When I was in the classroom, I tended to view the last few weeks of a school year as a time to try some new structures (Placemat Consensus) I’d learned but was scared of trying. End-of-the-year gave me permission to try & get comfortable w/ structure for next year.
Hey #KaganChat! I’m jumping in a little late tonight. I’m Eli and I’m currently a Lead Learner/Principal in Abq., NM and our SY ended last week. Next year I’m starting a new chapter as a Lead Learner/Principal in Las Cruces, NM!

A1: As a T I loved the EOY because I could use so many structures being they were so familiar w/ them by that point. Using them for TB/CB was essential during the chaos of the EOY and was a great way to wrap up/review the year #KaganChat
We love the ideas being shared in this #KaganChat for student engagement! Please keep them coming, and get ready for Question 2. It will be here in one minute.
We held our first “grad walk” since our school is officially sending off its first class of 8th graders to high school. They’ve been with us since kinder or pre-k.😢All our k-7 Ss cheers on our 8th graders in a huge parade led by administration. Emotional moment for all #KaganChat
Connecting end of the year celebrations to schoolwide implementation plans is a great way to bring closure to the year. It can also serve as a springboard to the next year’s plan. #KaganChat
A2 I think one of my favorite things about EOY is that everyone is fairly comfortable w/ that being part of the culture that cheers and celebrations are made up and the “inside jokes” take over #KaganChat
A2 6th graders move on to the junior high so we have a last walk through the school. Everybody lines the halls clapping for the kids. It is a special celebration for our kids! #KaganChat

A3: I saw one elementary school incorporate the silly sports and goofy games as part of their field day. It was a great way to make it cooperative instead of competitive. #kaganchat
In one of my MS we did EOY celebrations in our home room groups which we called RS Time (Reach for Success). RS groups had 12 kids, 3 from each grade (grades 5-8). Lower grade students decided how to celebrate their grade 8 RS friends who were moving to HS. Powerful. #kaganchat
A3 Air traffic Controller is one of my favorites because it shows how much they’ve learned to trust each other. They’re willing to play with their eyes closed. Hum Tag is also a favorite. #KaganChat
A3: We learn a new game in every general staff meeting so Ts can take back to class. Hum Tag has been a favourite as well as a one of the relays (LeapFrog?) #KaganChat
We did that in one of my districts. We integrated PIES at every station. No more winners and losers on a day that is supposed to be fun. It was a blast! #KaganChat
We’re thrilled with the ideas being shared here in our #KaganChat — play and #brainbreaks serve so many important functions! Are you ready for Question 4? It will show up in one minute?
#KaganChat A4: I actually have a day off during our Kagan Summer Academy at Disney! I’m so excited! I’ll be popping in to the other Kagan workshops all day, learning from the brilliance of my @Kaganonline colleagues!
A4 No professional development for myself, but I will be helping out our Tech Coordinator with getting other teachers in the district to begin implementing #geniushour.
#KaganChat
A4: Unfortunately, not SumAcad as was w/ @JackieAtKagan this April. However, as an admin, going back into the classroom to help a friend w/ summer school is always enriching-keeps it real. #KaganChat
No doubt Jody! I love summer school because they’re just seems to be that freedom to experiment and try new things. Have fun with structures!#kaganchat
It’s exciting that Kagan structures naturally fit into any PD plans! Maybe we’ll see some of you at our Summer Academy at Disney in July, or at one of our Regional Summer Academies! #kaganChat

We’re so excited to hear ways that our #KaganChat friends are planning to grow professionally this summer! Isn’t it exciting to realize that we can always continue growing and attaining new insights?! Prepare yourself — Question 5 will appear in just one minute.
#kaganchat A3 my favorite brain break to do with my students is triangle tag. It’s a brain break, but also allows my students to practice teamwork and cooperation.
A5 I was so excited to add Service Learning Projects to my toolkit this year. It is something our whole school got involved in. I learned that students love to help out and give back, #KaganChat
A5. I used Partner Expert Group Jigsaw at our trainer update this year. That is not a structure I have used very often. It is a great way to cover content or disseminate info. I like the support that is built into the structure. #kaganChat
#KaganChat A5: When you work alongside the amazing Misty Higgins you learn everyday, and though not a new strategy itself, using round table consensus to truly generate District next steps reminded me of the power of the structure at all levels of leading and learning.
We are certain your students will have wonderful memories of learning with and from you because of your dedication to student engagement! #KaganChat Question 6 will be here in just a minute.
My students love hand up, stand up, pair up. They ask to do it everyday! Teaching each other is the most powerful thing a student can do. #kaganchat A1
A6 So at the end of this school year I am retiring. So my goals will be a little different. I have found a few places that I would like to do some volunteering. Its time for me to do some giving back! #KaganChat
A6 #kaganchat my goal for next school year is to learn and master 3 new structures and help support any educators that want to try Kagan structures for the first time.
As a Kagan employee, I hope to write a couple more Kagan Connection articles. Topics TBD. Helping teachers understand how structured interaction fits with other initiatives is critical. If they don’t see the connection then Kagan becomes one more thing they have to do. #kaganChat
We would like to support you in attaining your goals! Remember to pose questions here on #KaganChat, and anytime on the Discussion Board on the https://t.co/lw0rREqffp website, as well. A bonus question will show up in one minute — just for fun!
Exactly. They got to see the power of it in our meetings this year. An easy sell to get the training going this year with new and seasoned staff. #KaganChat
#KaganChat Bonus: I’m blessed to be able to work w/ educators all over the world, & the downside is I’m away from home A LOT. I’ve made a goal of making more time for relationships this summer (spouse, family, & friends). Luckily, I have a boss (Laurie Kagan) who knows the value
Bonus: Helping my son and his family move into their new home. Their home in Pittsburgh finally sold and they will be moving out of our house mid June! It was a long 15 months!!! :) #KaganChat
#kaganChat if the learning target verb is apply/evaluate/etc, the structures for cooperative learning in that lesson must escalate and scaffold beyond a rally robin. Students need to dialogue with a peer to the depth of the target.
Thanks #KaganChat friends for sharing your summer goals. We hope you’re able to make those goals a reality! Thanks for being here tonight! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 26 and join us for the June #KaganChat
The June #KaganChat will focus on one of most educators’ favorite Kagan structures for active engagement: Quiz-Quiz-Trade! We look forward to you joining us Tuesday, June 26 at 8 PM Eastern.
