#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
A5: Unfortunately, I was not able to be at the chat last week but I think allowing the kids to know and become confident that they have a voice and they can change the world! #worldgeochat
A5 Interview a local immigrant and if the person is willing, publish the story. Its amazing that we don't even know our own neighbors migration stories! #worldgeochat
A4: The awesome ELA teacher on my team (@CarolineLehman) invited a refugee to come into her class to speak. The students drew sketchnotes to record what they learned. It was very powerful. #worldgeochat
A5: I think Ss need to show the world that often our political/social/legal responses to immigration throughout history have rarely changed. The specific grps may have changed, but the public response is often very similar. This is where history can provide a guide #worldgeochat
Question 5: Keeping in mind our chat from last week, what is a way students could take action in regards to issues pertaining to migration. #worldgeochat
I am co-organizing a Student Conference on Issues of Personal, Local, & Global Significance where Ss from the entire district share research and action plans on issues they care about (many from Geography). You can check out the website at https://t.co/vX38ufCZDN#worldgeochat
A5
Write letters to politicians to request change in immigration policies.
Work with a group that supports refugees.
Have students create literature about what people need to know about immigrants/refugees in the area.
There are endless possibilities!

Question 5: Keeping in mind our chat from last week, what is a way students could take action in regards to issues pertaining to migration. #worldgeochat
Q5 I think the most important action Ss can take is think about their own ideas beliefs about immigrants to view them through the lens of humanity and empathy - then research current refugee groups in the area & ask how they can help - listen then act #worldgeochat
A5 (cont) Then use that guide to encourage greater positive action on the part of decision-makers to change the “rhyme-scheme” of history. #worldgeochat
A5: Students can get involved by becoming more engaged with immigrants themselves. Having students getting involved in the community, listening to the latest news, and hearing from immigrants themselves is great way! #worldgeochat
A5: My students and I are talking about collecting books for students across the border who are in long-term shelters. Also trying to go down and do some education activities for the kids who don't go to school. Some parents are interested in helping. #worldgeochat
Got sidetracked amazing #worldgeochat crew. Thank you for the awesome chat & for the @wakelet archives to come. Truly an awesome learning tonight & am inspired by the stories/ideas presented. Keep rocking on the positive everyone!
A4: When teaching about refugees these images really show ss what it is like for children at the refugee camps. The images show just the kids at first, but you click & the whole image reveals a child at a refugee camp & helps ss gain empathy https://t.co/JKr0msuAhP#worldgeochat
Question 5: Keeping in mind our chat from last week, what is a way students could take action in regards to issues pertaining to migration. #worldgeochat
Great chat TY #worldgeochat love the empathy in everyone's responses but would also add that migration also has a lot of trauma attached to it so when we asked people to share it may be very difficult not because they don't want to share but because they have not healed Peace!
A5: Students could write letters or emails to their state or national representatives on the issue citing evidence and support from their learning and research from class. #worldgeochat
Question 5: Keeping in mind our chat from last week, what is a way students could take action in regards to issues pertaining to migration. #worldgeochat
Such a fast paced #worldgeochat - thanks so much @ecasey77 for leading a high intensity chat. I’m putting together a J-Term course entitled “Student Action in the face of the Global Refugee Crisis” - this gave me so much to work with - will need time to process!
Question 5: Keeping in mind our chat from last week, what is a way students could take action in regards to issues pertaining to migration. #worldgeochat
A2 we look at migration from a Bermudian perspective. Work permit rule and whether ex pat migration albeit temporary has had a detrimental impact on black Bermudians. #worldgeochat

A4: Here's a resource Extra has that ties into current events. The Marshall Islands story shows one of the reasons it is so challenging to migrate...missing home. #worldgeochat
Human geography lesson: Why 1/3 of the Marshall Islands has left for the US https://t.co/CWhTONxRXR
