What is the definition of 'dumbing-down'. Don't like the phrase myself as its too ambiguous #edchatie

  • Britannica_IE May 8 @ 3:36 PM EDT
Good evening everyone! Jacquelyn here with @Britannica_IE. Looking forward to hearing everyone's input! #edchatie
  • AlecMahony May 8 @ 3:38 PM EDT
Do people feel the direction of curriculum reform in Ireland is dumbing down Irish ed? #edchatie
  • EllenKMetcalf May 8 @ 3:38 PM EDT
#edchatie Kate, secondary teacher in Cork
  • noelahogan May 8 @ 3:39 PM EDT
Noel, History and Geography. Dumbed down, or overloaded with too many topics/subjects? #edchatie
  • noelahogan May 8 @ 3:40 PM EDT
Is the system dumbed down or are students overwhelmed with too much stimulation from elsewhere and unable to concentrate? #edchatie
  • deeom28 May 8 @ 3:41 PM EDT
#edchatie Dee primary school teacher. Dublin
  • EllenKMetcalf May 8 @ 3:41 PM EDT
Reducing the number of subjects would've been a positive of #jcreform if the time saved had been spread between remaining subjects #edchatie
    In reply to @noelahogan
  • fboss May 8 @ 3:41 PM EDT
Fred Boss, 2nd level art teacher, currently with @NCCAie #edchatie (ooops - I always forget to add the hashtag in this 1st tweet!)
  • C_Hendrick May 8 @ 3:43 PM EDT
I did my leaving cert in Dublin in the year of '93. Left on a coffin ship bound for Sasana in 2000. What have I missed? #edchatie
    In reply to @AlecMahony
  • fboss May 8 @ 3:43 PM EDT
That could be an even bigger question, Noel. Is society to blame and can education fix society? #edchatie
    In reply to @noelahogan
  • EllenKMetcalf May 8 @ 3:44 PM EDT
We could be dumbing-down by underestimating kids' powers of concentration & trying to engage them with edtech & gamification #edchatie
    In reply to @noelahogan
  • AlecMahony May 8 @ 3:45 PM EDT
What did you feel about the ed system in Ireland back then? Was it knowledge based? #edchatie
    In reply to @C_Hendrick
  • deeom28 May 8 @ 3:46 PM EDT
#edchatie Curriculum particularly infant doesn't stretch children in many ways. 1-5 in maths in JI is ridiculous imo
  • roisin616 May 8 @ 3:47 PM EDT

  • EllenKMetcalf May 8 @ 3:53 PM EDT
It's different in superficial ways. Human nature as portrayed in great literature, history, the laws of science: these still hold #edchatie

  • NiallMurphyKCS May 8 @ 4:00 PM EDT
Not necessarily if we adapt our teaching methodologies we can create opportunities for greater knowledge and critical thinking #edchatie
    In reply to @EllenKMetcalf, @noelahogan
  • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:00 PM EDT
Children are engaged in the same ways they always were but now we have more to do in the same time resulting in a dumbing down #edchatie

  • AlecMahony May 8 @ 4:03 PM EDT

    In reply to @C_Hendrick, @EllenKMetcalf
  • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:03 PM EDT
I've always taught, and have always been taught, critical thinking. We called it thinking. Just a buzzword. #edchatie

It's all about the Key Skills Kids going to school now to learn how to "stay well" and "manage" themselves https://t.co/zynmN08uD1 #edchatie
    In reply to @AlecMahony, @C_Hendrick
  • NiallMurphyKCS May 8 @ 4:04 PM EDT

If you're cutting by 25% the number of Science classes at JC, then you're making a very big statement about expectations & demands #edchatie
  • peter_lydon May 8 @ 4:04 PM EDT
On the left, A JC geography text; on the right, GCSE (NI). JC is incredibly dumbed down and getting dumberer downerer #edchatie
  • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:05 PM EDT
    #edchatie
    • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:04 PM EDT
Don't know what others think(or critically think) but to me it's lower expectations for students.Less knowledge based less thinking involved
      In reply to @NiallMurphyKCS
  • conpower May 8 @ 4:05 PM EDT
Not usually used by educators but more media etc outside the system. It is not constructive. #edchatie
    In reply to @MajellaDempsey

More skills based so students can think for themselves and learn from each other #edchatie
    In reply to @conorsmurf
  • noelahogan May 8 @ 4:06 PM EDT
A crammed curriculum means some things get missed. I had Leaving Certs last year unable to name the counties of Ireland.#edchatie
  • sarfern May 8 @ 4:06 PM EDT
It's becoming increasingly difficult to engage with texts on a deeper level....skimming the surface leads to "dumbing down"#edchatie
  • C_Hendrick May 8 @ 4:07 PM EDT
Reading through the consultation. So far, it looks like a watered down version of a TED talk/silicon valley startup manifesto. #edchatie
    In reply to @AlecMahony, @EllenKMetcalf
  • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:07 PM EDT
What skills? I teach English, what skills must they learn that I didn't have to when I was in school? #edchatie

The new JC is predicated on certain beliefs which do not stand up in reality; the LO approach has pluses, but many flaws #edchatie #1
  • EllenKMetcalf May 8 @ 4:08 PM EDT
Anecdotally, many teachers have dropped books like "TKAM" at juniorcycle, to make sure they'll have time to watch "School of Rock" #edchatie

    In reply to @C_Hendrick, @EllenKMetcalf
  • BridCarlow May 8 @ 4:09 PM EDT
#edchatie Looking back over old text books , one would think the system is "dumber" but education now is far broader than the 3 Rs
  • conorsmurf May 8 @ 4:10 PM EDT

    In reply to @NiallMurphyKCS
  • peter_lydon May 8 @ 4:12 PM EDT
But a dumbed down education is fine - at least our kids will feel good about themselves?? #wellbeing #edchatie
  • conpower May 8 @ 4:12 PM EDT
Studying film is one thing but School of Rock being in the curriculum is the only concrere example of dumbing down I can think of. #edchatie

I have always included film as it's part of the LC. Other aspects taking up more time. Nothing wrong with opening up an art form #edchatie

It's a question of opportunity cost: a rich and varied vocabulary is far more important than being able to create a podcast. #edchatie

Bring on the wellbeing. Would much rather be going for a run in the mornings. Not quite sure where Science teaching fits in though #edchatie

I'd be happier about film studies if my time with 2nd yr/3rd yr English wasn't being slashed by DES #edchatie

And it won't make teachers better or more confident at developing their own knowledge and passing it on! #edchatie
