#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
I can tell you off the break if you're not following @raptjr & @FlowStoryATX you should because you will be exposed to great insights and resources around positive mental health #HipHopEd
Ts and Ss are encouraged to share good news at the beginning of classes at our school. It fosters a family feel, and gets things started off on a positive vibe. #hiphoped
I am currently working @HSRA_MN and will be sharing some past projects from students that you can use to engage your students around positive mental health @tonyminnieapple#HipHopEd
Reading books or articles about shared experiences can be very cathartic, and has help us make sense of situations/feelings that used to make us feel alone 📚 📖 #Bibliotherapy#HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek

As I learned this week from Steve Garcia of @Common__Threads this week, students notice whether you're bringing in a bottle of sugar-laden soda or a bottle of water. We are modeling habits whether we want to or not. #HipHopEd
We have to acknowledge what is important to our students. I was in a class today where a student made it his business that the class recognize that #XXXTentacion was killed 3 months ago today #HipHopEd
We also need to teach our students #empathy. They need to understand how their emotions affect other people, and how they are affected by others. #HipHopEd
Students need help to develop a positive self-image. In math, students will often talk negatively about their abilities. For me it's about finding a starting point & building from there. I let them know it's about growing & we can do that together #HipHopEd
I agree! And I believe integral to the awareness process is the ability to verbalize their feelings (even if they don't say the words aloud). Give students emotional vocabulary. #HipHopEd
Find time to spread joy in your instructional practices. Let your students investigate something that they love. It'll be an unforgettable moment. #MentalHealth#HipHopEd
This is so important.Focusing specifically on gender, it is too often that these teenage males are not fully utilizing their sessions due to stigma. Feeling as though they must be tough.Feeling as though they will be judged and viewed as weak for expressing themselves. #hiphoped
You are the ear you always wished heard what you had to say #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek Even when we have the answers sometimes it is crucial just to listen.
It is the school counselors responsibly to create a counseling office that encourages young people to explore difficult emotions, and learn new coping repertoires #hiphoped#GreenRibbonWeek
#hiphoped Greeting students at the door is a subtle but powerful way to get a grasp on how they might be doing. A positive interaction there can positively change Ss outlook in an instant.
For me its scribbling some poetry or sketching some block letters with a sharpie or writing a song. Too often these aren’t seen as academically rigorous endeavors. #hiphoped and #punkrocked are undercut by gatekeepers and antiquity.
I work with college students. Often we focus on the poor, but middle and upper class are experiencing crises at alarming rates, and we don't notice b/c they are performing well in class - until they aren't. #HipHopEd
#XXXTentacion was and will always be a wellspring for our youth! Examine and Expose students to the message beyond the noise...His music/art was #Intentional and designed to #Heal us all......now is my lesson plan #realenough? #HipHopEd
We have to acknowledge what is important to our students. I was in a class today where a student made it his business that the class recognize that #XXXTentacion was killed 3 months ago today #HipHopEd
We have to be careful to not immediately cast judgements based on biases on the pathways that students take to achieve and maintain their positive mental health #HipHopEd
As educators we need to be well informed about the resources we have available to our students and also be able to spot signs that show our students struggling and refer them appropriately #hiphoped
#hiphoped In chemistry we often deal with a lot of failures before strings of successes. Preparing students to deal with those hurdles in a positive manner develops perseverance, as well as wonderful peer relationships.
When students come up to the board I remind my class that their peer is taking a risk lets #Respect that and not laugh when they make a mistake, imagine how you would feel if it happened to you. #HipHopEd
This is very true! Sometimes they just need that outlet. Currently back in middle school, and it is such an emotional roller coaster for kids. #HipHopEd
I take time in the beginning and I let them know it’s safe and I care. Regardless what’s going on, we talk about things good or bad. I may teach college Ss but they are walking stress bombs needing positivity finding who they are. #HipHopEd
We have be truthful about what positive mental health looks like. It's not learning how to fake it or be politically correct or acting mature when you're hurting #hiphoped
If you don't explore where your joy comes from then you have less to build on...Our songs too often are limited to a singular key...Embrace the authentic pain/struggle but also embrace the authentic joy/happiness we all exp. If we don't ID the healthy uppers #LowsWin#HipHopEd
Kudos to every young black male teacher out there. You already know most of them didn’t give us a chance as students, so what are the stats on them treating us equally as peers? #HipHopEd
Leave work at home. Have a stop time for when you're staying at school. Refresh yourself over the weekend. Keep an eye on your budget (aka stop spending for your school kids and use more of your money for yourself). #HiphopEd#worklifebalance#Mentalhealth
One thing I've learned about integrating #hiphoped into my classroom culture is that it's not always about the lyrics. Sometimes it's just about the vibe, whether musical, artistic, kinetic, or whatever.
I don’t take drawing notebooks away from Ss. I have a wildly talented group of 6th graders this year. We have a deal about time and place. Now they love to show each other what they’re working on. #HipHopEd

Psychology distress is a common after ongoing race-based discrimination. As counselors and teachers we need to be comfortable facilitating racially charged group dialogues with youth #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek
You are friend you always wish you had when you were lonely and you are that smile that helped brighten your day when you were feeling down. Our youth need adults like you. #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek#Growth - Be the best version of yourself.
Yes! The elders need to model mental health as best as we can for the young ones. That includes modeling vulnerability, uncertainty, and mistakes. It's all a part of being human. #HipHopEd

Just had an incident today and my admin was shaken by what a student said. We also need time to process racially charge instances from youth. #GreenRibbonWeek#trauma#mentalhealth#HipHopEd

Damn looking like a Brooklyn Superman, so proud of your work and friendship @MisterMinor , I’m just trying to play catch up and be like you when I grow up #mentorsmatter#HipHopEd#urbaned

Yup. It’s human tense unto try and make our students feel better. But those attempts can sometimes invalidate their experience. Just be there...sit in discomfort with them. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd as a Psychologist, who is now teaching, I see that mental wellness must be grounded in balance. Teachers can't always be heroes. They must be co-conspirators and essentially selfish humans. Examples.

Agreed. Just as I prepare to meet my students with engaging and meaningful academic lessons, I must meet their social-emotional needs as well as my own. #HipHopEd
I teach my students who will teach as a profession, you can’t take your bad mood into the class/gym. They deserve the best of you everyday. #Physed#HipHopEd
Teachers must attend to their own mental health before they can attend to students. Part of that mental health includes keeping a positive energy. Teachers need to realize that griping daily about students during lunch/meetings only breeds negativity. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd in my time treating others, I came to learn that much of the greatest progress was made with freedom to process out loud, unapologetically, and when people felt free to explore their definition of becoming fully realized.

I'm pretty upfront with my students about my own mental health challenges, if for no other reason than to confront the stigma that people who struggle aren't weird or crazy or hopeless (or rare). We're resilient, and beyond that struggle is success and growth. #hiphoped
A key tactic for supporting youth as they disclose/sort through difficult feelings, is to be comfortable sitting in silence. Don’t feel pressured to fill the space #HipHopEd
I think we're so busy as Ts we often forget the day-to-day struggles of being that teenager in that desk, pressures from so many angles. Keeping an open mind about that experience helps reinvigorate me before walking into class. #hiphoped
We have to teach students that its ok not to be ok. That there is place for anger, sadness, grief, despair, anxiety, uncertainty. "Good vibes only" isn't realistic, sustainable, or healthy. #hiphoped

Compassion and empathy come from doing your own emotional work. If you're running from your own feelings, you wont be able to hold authentic space for others. #hiphoped
In a classroom w/students whose names are perpetually mispronounced, that one time when a teacher gets it right is one less traumatic moment. #names#HipHopEd

Self-care is not about "feeling better". Its about feeling more deeply until you work thru whatever it is that needs healing. Sometimes its going to feel a lot worse before it feels better. #hiphoped
As a school counselor, I’ve been working to break down the stigma. Letting our students know that it is ok to ask for help. Overall, more staff training on techniques can be beneficial for all educators. I love to teach 5 finger deep breathing trick. #hiphoped
Sometimes our young people are just amazed when we accept them for who they are. Like, their identity has been challenged or dismissed or rejected so often that they come to expect it. Just letting them be themselves is such an important act of love. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd in leading mental wellness exercises now and past, I always combine affirmations, with breathing/balance and projection/fantasy/imagery. Whole system. Practice. Engaging mind and body to heal themselves. Everything we need is already in there.
Oh I'm so happy you're here! I remember a comment of yours a few weeks ago that really resonated with me. ~Teachers need to fix themselves and not bring their baggage, not lean on the students or make it their problem. You said it way better :) #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek
Also, teaching coping skills. I had a stress management group for students last year where went over POSITIVE and harm-free skills. One too many students try to selfMedicate. #hiphoped

It would help too if counselors weren't reduced to creating and maintaining student schedules, making class changes, and managing tiering students for academic & behavior issues #HipHopEd
FACTS. Basic active listening skills trainings are necessary for teachers to fill that gap in pre-service preparation. School counselors are the best fit professionals in the school building to provide that professional development #HipHopEd
In case you're looking for tracks to help connect with issues of adversity, coping, emotions, and ultimately resilience here is resource #2 - https://t.co/ICsXaTXQ9G - All of these can be used for creative prompts, to analyze and reflect, and to motivate for better #hiphoped
Yo @Ianplevy check this book out. It’s powerful & Thinknit might be useful for counselor students. I Use this with my pre service students. https://t.co/NSR8ocIsOc#hiphoped
many students—particularly students caught up in state systems like group homes + prisons—have been burned by adults, such as past social workers, who they have given their trust. this makes it harder for educators to build trust. #HipHopEd
We must stop putting our self-care until the summer. Self-care,mental health, and vacations from work can happen during and after the clock. #mentalhealth#hiphoped

Yup! And it’s top down. If principals understand our roles fully, opportunities for collaboration will occur. The distance between Ts and SCs in indicative of a lack of understand of the SC role. Plain and simple. #HipHopEd

So many ways for teachers and s’s to reflect together. Today I started a “writing for full presence” prompt with “I remember”. S’s pick event and for 7 min, start every line with “I remember”. Can be about waking up or a childhood event. Powerful to share. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Mental wellness is also a group exercise. Find your tribe, let them feed you. I link up with @chrisemdin and cuss, rage, hope and plan. Then go be great. Then recharge. Rinse. Repeat.
the first week of school all of us school social workers (therapists), did a presentation for ALL of the staff on exactly what our role was. We even did certain activities with the staff to put themselves in our shoes and the students shoes. It was great #hiphoped
@TheRealHipHopEd My discipline is speech communication and I’m trying to figure out how I can make it interesting for my high schoolers. Any suggestions? #hiphoped#edfb4338
As we get closer to election day, it's important to engage and vote for those with a plan to help eliminate the things that contribute to our kids' mental health issues (poverty, violence, etc.). #HipHopEd
Yes! I showed a student last year a clip of @VicMensa talking about his mental health and the stigma in our community. He’s doing the work. There are so many artists who are being candid about their experiences. Let’s listen to them because our students already do. #hiphoped
I can't say this enough: #hiphoped has been such an important part of my own mental health for many years now. When you're struggling, find friends, find like-minded colleagues, find your community. Ain't none of us got to do this alone!
A reminder. We cannot claim we value students mental health until we put counselors in the position to do their jobs. The 2014-15 US average school counselor to student ratio was 482-1. Some states were above 700-1. #HipHopEd
One of the biggest challenges I see for helping professionals is negotiating the balance between supporter and counselor when you are not their counselor/social worker/psychologist - Sometimes it is necessary to #refer to a professional #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek
I went to a local high school to welcome the students in on the first day and as the cops pulled up (accompanying district staff) the students all rushed inside. #HipHopEd
Realness is perceived/displayed quickly. Trust however is maintained through constant tests, often based off previous experiences of trust being broken #HipHopEd
I have a student that already takes liberties in my space, but rather than reprimanding her & pushing her out, I realize that her actions come from her comfort level with me, that I can create that positive space for her in such a short time is awesome #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd in any system I have worked, I ask for spaces to allow the minds/souls present, to process. I ask for permission to live with them while they process. Even if I lead, wellness is someone's home, we must be gracious "guests"
Hey @kimmoses100 - I really enjoyed meeting you in Derric's office this week! And glad to see you here tonight, too. #HipHopEd has been my favorite learning space for the past 1+ year!

Support young people’s participation in safe environments. Help with transportation. Help with set up. Help with clean up #HipHopEd#GreenRibbonWeek Be that example...

This is one of the hardest messages to get across to social work students learning to be professionals... your missteps have huge ramifications. #ethics#integrity matters #HipHopEd

I value the power of incidental interactions like when s’s see me working on my Identity book, they’re intrigued and next thing you know, there’s a lunch meet-up creating our Identity books together. #HipHopEd
this message is so important.
young people at a youth program i directed voted to turn down $$$ from the state because it would have required hiring a social worker. one said, 'if there’s a social worker here, i’m not coming’ + many agreed.

We need to stop calling people resilient. We label them "strong" and (unintentionally) send the message that they can't fall apart, because "that's not what strong people do". We have to make it ok for people to be vulnerable. #hiphoped
Just telling my students today as we're studying a poem: identifying iambic pentameter is nice, but it's not going to make or break you as a person. Learning empathy from working to understand what the poet is trying to tell us--that's the important stuff. #HipHopEd
I still struggle with being confident in myself as I deal with negative #bodyimage constantly. #HipHopEd. I constantly worry about my weight and if I'm pretty enough. I heard my own 5th grade girls talking about losing weight...
This is just my first year. However, the presentation got so much positive feedback! I think it really helped them understand our role. Word around school is that there is a positive change, of course there still work to be done #hiphoped
Which raises important concerns when often we direct students to “push through” a class or “just wait” until they graduate. They’re hurting now, we need to process and create solutions now. #HipHopEd
It depends on what you're interested in. I would say look through my TL since it's mostly RTs. If there are people whose tweets look interesting check them out. #HipHopEd
I've never been a fan of doing Follow Friday tweets because we all come to Twitter looking for different things and experiences. Hope that helped! #hiphoped
