Welcome to #NYEDChat! Tonight’s discussion centers on the mantra #StartStrong. I’m moderating tonight/co-mod Lisa Meade is joining me from upstate NY. Let’s rock Twitter tonight w/ our collective greatness as mindful, stu-centered #educators. #Students#Parents are welcomed.
We'll be using the standard Q1/A1 format in tonight's #NYEDChat. Get ready for an hour of engaged learning and great conversation as we #CelebrateMonday with our colleagues. 1st question starts at 8:05.
Yeah, Wendy you said that you would join #NYEDChat from Syracuse. No snow now, right? I will be in Syracuse for Columbus Day weekend to celebrate my uncle's 90th.
I like to change up the word rigor to vigor because it brings me to a different level - passion-filled learning with zest. #NYEDChat so glad that you started strong & jumped into engaged learning.

Hi all - Chris from Rochester, teaching 6th grade (sorry tuning in late!)
A1: Very excited about the equity work we did with our kids last year and hope to continue it with a new group of passionate students.
#nyedchat
100% of our faculty conducted at least two Learning Walks (teachers visiting others teachers). Best PD ever! We shared our learning with ASCD NY. https://t.co/BSSikPvZok? #NYEDChat
Peg, excited to be a part of #NYedChat.
A1 As an Instructional Coach, I collaborated with many teachers creating, designing, implementing and assessing on new ways to embed literacy: note-taking stations in Chemistry, jigsawing main idea & detail in phy ed and inference in Math

A1 Hi, Chris. Welcome to #NYEDChat. When teachers consider all students and build a classroom culture for all voices to honor that is super. What exactly did you accomplish with your equity work? #NYEDChat
Welcome Orit. I am so glad that you are joining #NYEDChat for the first time. You will be happy to meet the wonderful tweeps you join their voices to ours.
A1 That is great Ned. I love learning walks. They allow teachers to look closely at colleagues' instructional moves and share theirs. There has to be an open culture to be able to do this so congratulations. #NYEDChat
A2: I was entirely motivated by the relationships and progress of last year. I wanted to keep this momentum alive and take it to the next level...I am certainly there #StartStrong#NYEDChat
A2 One of our great experiences was our Global Collaborations, so we started this year with a new global project #OGCHopeCampaign with 12 countries and counting 🌍😀#NYEDChat
A2 Taught a lesson in Biology where students had choices of articles based on pulse/heart rate/exercise. Much more engaged when Ss are reading what they want to read! #NYEDChat (Check out https://t.co/jXs5t5YUJC for Resources that work well with choice).
Choice leads to Voice. We were just speaking about choice in building classroom libraries this morning at my #elanetwork meeting with literacy leaders on LI. One of the leaders said her school is asking the children to recommend titles for their libraries. #NYEDChat
A2: we are trying to empower our teachers in @SpencerportCSD by offering over 50 teacher led workshops that are off hours. If people do 6 hours, they don’t come on the Friday before April break! They can they go see it in action during a Learning Walk! #NYEDChat
A2: Building on success of last year, we are going back to our study of identity to help kids see themselves in a different light. @Tolerance_org Social Justice standards were an amazing resource in this work! #NYEDChat

A3: I am always working toward Student Self-Regulation as I guide them towards independence and knowing themselves as learners while taking care of each other. THIS impacts their entire learning lives. #NYEDChat
A2 Social justice is such a hot topic that is meaningful to teach since it impact all. We need to help all students see who they are and what they can become in positive ways. #NYEDChat

Start the school year off strong with Our Beginning of School pages https://t.co/YIn8g65WsO which include Building Community, Bulletin Boards, Classroom Management, Know Your Students, Organizing Your Classroom, Seating Plan.. #NYEDChat
A3 I really need to redouble my efforts to get into classrooms and teach alongside staff this year. Takes focus and commitment. I know I can do it #NYEDChat

A3 This is an important question. Teachers who are passionate about teaching and student learning are always reflective practitioners who analyze their moves and try to find ways to engage all Ss. #NYEDChat
A3 I think a great way to get better is to have a coach, mentor, colleague, or admin provide feedback conversations following a lesson. Everyone needs a coach, even Lebron James! #NYEDChat
A3: As an @ELeducation network school, we are re-committing to character (Habits of Scholarship) in our daily lessons. Pairing academic targets and character targets helps kids see the value of both. Learn more about this: https://t.co/a90Zd320us#nyedchat

A3 You said it here, Mark and you are so right. Our goal is to impact learning and in the process impact our teaching moves to accomplish more for each student. #NYEDChat
A3 Don, having a principal teach with a teacher is a way not only to build relationships but to show children that the principal is a continuous learner too. Great commitment. #NYEDChat
A3 I have been developing short writing protocols for teachers to immerse their Ss in. We need teachers and students to find their voice through writing. #NYEDChat
A4: Our environment is intentionally more positive for staff and students. There is more of a feeling of partnership between staff and students this year. #NYEDChat
A4 We had 8 days of learning and preparing before the students arrived. Our teachers set the tone from day one and have been positive with students and families. Open House and Family Information Nights. Keep communication going! #NYEDChat
A4 By the end of the school year (June) all classes have been formed, timetables, schedules for prep, physed, computer lab, partner schedules. Everything is ready for September #StartStrong#NYEDChat
A4: We have a new school leader and she led a staff overnight retreat in August to breathe new life into our staff Guiding Principles and recommit to our mission. We laughed, worked hard (played hard, too!), and became a more well-connected staff. #nyedchat

A4 I like it when a culture of trust is built and sustained. It sounds like your leader understands that and wants to foster solid positive relationships in your school. #NYEDChat
A4: Continued forward movement takes intentional awareness on a daily basis- of our goals, our purpose, our WHY. It also take teamwork as this cannot gather momentum without it. #NYEDChat
Sorry...this is A5...

A5 We have weekly grade level meetings to keep the focus on Being the Spark for kids and providing all they need to be successful. Here is what guided our staff meeting. https://t.co/TGPZ9Zj58m#NYEDChat
A5: We have scheduled four staff listening circles into our PD calendar this year - our first attempt at them last spring was exciting and a great way to "clear the decks" without judgement. #nyedchat
We try to make the environment inviting and fun for new student orientation. We want students to come to school on day 1 feeling confident and comfortable @SCSD_NMS#nyedchat
A5 I ran a regional meeting for LI literacy leaders this morning. We started out with a protocol to write their #StartStrong intentions. In December there will be a check-in at the beginning of our #elanetwork meeting. #NYEDChat

Reflaction: Chats like these inspire me to be the cheerleader and demonstrate my passion to the masses. My passion is real and others see it daily. I am hoping it is contagious to some. #NYEDChat
I am so impressed with #positivity at #NYEDChat tonight. We may not have the usual grand number of participants but we are having conversations that are meaningful and filled with passionate commitments to teaching and learning. Thank you to those who are at #NYEDChat tonight.
Reflaction (totally stealing this term for use in the classroom!) - be more of a teacher-leader this year! Lead PD workshops for staff and master classes for @ELeducation National Conference! #nyedchat
I popped into #nyedchat and didn’t tend the fire. It went out. My life lesson, of course. Always gotta’ tend the fire. #fire-tenders @ShiftParadigm @cvarsalona ❤️
We have 5 minutes to continue making commitments to learning. Your reflactions are strong. Thanks everyone for lifting your voices with ours at #NYEDChat
Thank you to my fellow #NYEDChat moderators and all the connected educators who joined us tonight. Your Voices Matters! For those who are not able to join us @participate will archive the chat.
Tomorrow you put your commitment statement into a full reflaction with action. Come on back to #NYEDChat and tell us what you are doing to make your commitment a reality.
Now I am off to find the transcript of #NYEDChat that @participate is creating for us. A Big Thanks to them too. I will post it for all to see. Good night everyone.
