Welcome commodore. I'm entering the dark side and turning an old laptop into a Chromebook this week.
Hi everyone! Jim Calabrese, Principal at Freedom Middle School
A1: started small, recorded pushing paper cutouts and adding voice-overs later
A1 I try to capture snippets of science goodness. I've tried vine but often just a short video on my phone.
Buenas noches Jon, HS Spanish T & Tech Mentor in NJ.
let the power consume you!
Michael Cohen - Tech Rabbi from Los Angeles. In and out tonight.
In my world video is used to share ideas of how to utilize new apps & tools in their classrooms
Simple is always the best to make students comfortable. I have taken lots of tips from your expertise also.
A1: Use video to capture students independent work while teacher works w/groups.
Buenas noches! Bienvenido a
Welcome Jim! Good to have you with us!
Welcome Jim! Glad to have you here with us tonight
A1 S generated clips that document learning, flipped lessons, & video via QR codes to add depth to content.
A1 We create some iMovies, use Greenscreen, and some EdPuzzle flipped classroom videos. Also love doing BadLipReading w/ Ss.
It's a great idea. What other alternatives have you tried besides Vine? YouTube capture?
Hi Jon! thanks for joining us.
Great way to get Ts who are self-proclaimed 'newbies' to give it a try.
Good to be here to support Mike and learn from some great people.
Glad you could join us tonight Jon.
I love me some StopMotion! Kids do too. It's a great hook for movie creating. Great idea!
A1 we learn a lot fro YouTube and record what happens
These are excellent examples! https://t.co/Zti35rXOW0
A1 S generated clips that document learning, flipped lessons, & video via QR codes to add depth to content.
is awesome to use w/ vids.
a1: Ss and Ts youtube channels and embedded playlists on a blog or website.
A1 video provides me with more time to work 1:1 or small group and students to control pace, time, place of their learning
YES! https://t.co/w8BW2G6Blf
A1 video provides me with more time to work 1:1 or small group and students to control pace, time, place of their learning
YouTube capture....what's that?
Let's not get crazy. I just need a better personal understanding of what Ts have in front of them when its not an iPad
Question number 2 coming your way in a couple of minutes.
I like it but we use them as quick learns for coding
it'll be easy to fall in love with it.
Turning a laptop into a chromebook - interesting!
I love the use of videos in blogs! Adding in an extra layer to blogging and it really engages students! https://t.co/w4RAJShGo7
a1: Ss and Ts youtube channels and embedded playlists on a blog or website.
A1: also quote simple but tube chop was helpful when pointing students to YouTube videos for home viewing.
you mean the students in front of them
Joanna, this is so true! That 1:1 time is so valuable!
Joining in a minute. Putting down kids now! Then will catch up!
It's a free app that lets you create movies on the fly. Very simple to use.
A2: The best app for video creation is - hands down!
Hey peeps. Shai from PA here. HS math teacher. How is everyone doing on this beautiful evening?
Periscope is awesome for those "live" moments you just have to capture. Love it!
A2: chromebook: Video. iPad: iMovie & touchcast
Is exactly what I'm using. Just didn't have the link handy at the sno-cone place.
A1: We use video to capture unique learning experiences in unique ways. Lots of experimentation. https://t.co/xFKqq02QID
camera app and share through
Created video lessons for all subjects- cut down on "stage" time so I could work with kids. Best teaching of my career.
A2 Really like all the options available on Screencastify
A1: Because I am a teacher, my Ss watch a video pretty much nightly for me. My vids are short and cover basic content
I personally love ! It has everything
Ts & Ss love to break new ground!
A2: mobile device - simply use camera to capture paper animation or dry erase. Add voice overs later
we piloted seesaw in a few lower school grades. it went great. hoping to add 2 more.
A2 Ss enjoy using the built in camera leading to iMovie & green screen creations. Touchcast is growing in popularity.
just started playing with Spark
Great to have you with us Shai you Formative Queen!
is the best way to capture the learning journey
A2 Explain Everything (app) and for advanced techies Camtasia
you are forgiven since you have a sno-cone. it's no water ice, but close enough.
For my project, my Ss use or Imovie. Their choice.
export the MP4 is crucial
the Coaches Eye app helped so much with breaking down technique. PE Ts & Ss could really benefit from it.
LOL. Not sure I am the queen, but do LOVE !
I've heard so much about this month. Seems to be a fan favorite.
Alex from in Chicago. We use video to capture students explaining their thinking!
I use to edit and upload my videos.
because Seesaw is excellent
Our Ts played w/ all the Adobe apps this year. Can't wait to get into Spark.
teacher controls and ease of use by students. parents can view too
A2: I love using to make a lot of my flipped videos.
A2. I like Stop Motion (yes, that's the name of the app). It is super easy. Anything super easy is a plus for me.
Question 3 arriving in a couple of minutes!!
I like the ease of use. Ability to post mult file types Easy to share w parents
Makes it difficult on Ts if Ss are submitting in many diff formats.
A2: I guess I was just answering this. is really good. for Ss. video record.
Okay. I can be the queen, in your opinion. LOL.
I could spend hours in an love fest. Great for Ss to demo understanding.
It can, so I do try to limit the # of choices, but like to offer choice.
is now trending in USA, ranking 44
the format issue disappears if the video is submitted as a link
I am the other way I offer lots of choices. I want students to learn to be good eval
Question 3 is a two part question. The second half (Q3b) coming your way in 2 minutes!
A1. Students create "60 Sec. Mini-Lessons" PSAs, Book Movie Trailers, Ss presentations, etc. https://t.co/arqS0M26bU
Whaaaat?!?! Clearly chose a MASTER to GM tonight. Let's see what we can do to move to 34. 24? https://t.co/syV1wW8hKw
is now trending in USA, ranking 44
Q3: lots of potential with for formative assessment
We spent a couple hours in each other's sessions last summer.
A3 - have Ss screencast work; record a short monologue instead of writing an answer.
A3 let Ss create videos to show what they know! Deeper understanding and more engaging than multiple choice/ rote
A1. Students create "60 Sec. Mini-Lessons" PSAs, Book Movie Trailers, Ss presentations, etc. https://t.co/Xd6ntdgWwf
I just discovered this year and barely scraped the surface of the amazingness of this app
A3- Any tool that allows Ss & Ts to express current understanding must be utilized- hence video ideal for formative
A3 I haven't tried it yet. But met & she showed Ts how she uses Screencastify for narrative feedback on written work
A3: I have not used it, but have it in my "things to explore" this summer. Want to incorporate it into genius hour.
. That is the app that I thought would be a game changer but is unused by teachers https://t.co/SObifqz7Pg
WOOT! I'm a huge fan, too. For our 1:1 iPad program Grades 5-12 it is indispensable for Ts and S. https://t.co/2NQW8PDz6x
A2. I like Stop Motion (yes, that's the name of the app). It is super easy. Anything super easy is a plus for me.
Seeing is believing! Love this idea!
Need to take a closer look at this. Always weighing benefits/negatives before showing Ts another app
So true! You have to really understand your subject to create something about it!
Thanks for rationale. Will have a look. Thanks PLN!
This is awesome! Love it!
I like as well. The issue is that we don't have ipads.
A3a Something I've heard is to have Ss do a Q&A after showing a video they've created
It can literally do everything.
So easy to do, so easy to 'grade'. Ts need to put away fear of using video in classroom
Hence the appropriate name
A3: Encourage Ss to create videos, let them choose the tool, You set the standards. Foster creativity and innovation. Be amazed!
it works on chromebooks and regular laptops.
is great for collecting quantitative and qualitative information about student's knowledge
Great point too many times Ts allow Ss to show video and Mic Drop. Make them accountable w/ Q&A
works on Chromebooks? Didn't know that!
Joy is awesome and any kind of video tool is great for any type of feedback. Especially writing!
A3 I'd recommend and Google Hangouts for ease of use and plenty of features to play with.
A3b So many of us have "communicate effectively" as expectation- ubiquitous video tools adds new dimension & avenues for Ts & Ss
worth it. I use it with college students. Works in every level
Right back at ya. Anyone who 'Has Green Screen & Will Travel' is my hero
That is something I have never done. I will do next year. Great idea!
Question 4 coming up in one minute!
too bad they are ending further development on chromebooks.
Hangouts is awesome if you teach multiple classes, but guest speaker can only make 1 appearance
I've never used Sangit. Seen it come up several times. Will have to.
Safe to say the importance of video to communicate ideas isn't going to become less important.
. Agreed! Please reconsider!
A4 some students never seem to be satisfied with output. Focus to much on video and not content
Joining a little late! But excited to be here :)
Have Ss create videos to show their Learning/Thinking = Formative Assessment , ,
I use Snagit to make instructional GIFs however they are discontinuing that feature soon
A4 - believe it or not Ss uncomfortable w/ video creation, need to learn tool, shy. Ts need to take risks and make own vids
you can't stop the next j.j. abrams.
A4: Ability to assess depth / breadth of learning.
. hence the power of Screencasting. Live hangouts are recorded to your account.
A4: structure was problem for Ss initially & videos were too long so started using VTRs https://t.co/tvSIDrmVDs problem solved.
I am aware of that, but not very easy to write on Chromebooks and laptops.
i should have said, they are ending support for the chrome extension.
Agreed! Tell Ss what you need to see, & step out of their way. Formative check-in ensures Ss on right track
YES! Content matters so much. I tell my students you aren't working in Hollywood, yet.
I have it on my iPad and Chromebook convertible that Ss can use.
there are touchscreen chromebooks and ms surface can be used with pens
Great to have you with us Sabba!
It's so important that T's actually SEE the thinking.
Having enough time is the biggest challenge. Would love suggestions.
i've been using it. so far so good. they need a direct save to drive
A2 Knomiateach is another fantastic video creation app
Jon this is HUGE! There are lots of shy kids and that is a big problem.
. Yes!!! Ss empowerment is the key to innovation. You might have the next Spielberg in your class.
I know they will be adding GIF support soon too
A4: all about script & storyboard. Video production wastes ton of time w/o it. Those promote writing, organization, and 7 C's
Unfortunately, we don't have those touch screen CB. Just the standard ones.
Great point. I learned this the hard way.
If you give Ss 10 min of playtime w/ apps they can teach each other You only need to keep Ss focused on the objective
A4 - Ss hate (for some reason) to record their voice or don't want others to hear them record. so the end up mumbling
thrilled to have help w/documentaries Ss made. scripting/storyboarding expertise = invaluable
Also remind students of plot diagram. Make sure they have all parts covered.
Question 5 is coming up in 2 minutes. This question is from via
does anyone have Ss do live video? no editing etc? seems to be a skill set of its own and one that is becoming more popular
Yep! These are simple, effective and easy to use.
Ss are great at helping/teaching each other. They're focused when creating...lots of other curricular expectations.
A good program for live broadcasting is
we do live videos of project process. Sort of like a quick snapshot
thanks! ill check it out. i had been exploring wirecast
Hi just jumping in. A4: need to buy more green screens and cut more whiteboard for q-cards to solve next years problems
Like student Ted Talks? I'd love to see more of this.
We do "no edit / no cuts" (not live) video to show persistence, learning from mistakes, https://t.co/ByNAwPR7DS
does anyone have Ss do live video? no editing etc? seems to be a skill set of its own and one that is becoming more popular
a5: link to some example videos on a blog or website in a tweet with some edu hashtags.
Would love to run a school-wide student led TEDtalk! Anyone done one?
its hard! with apps like snapchat its like have a story in mind but be ready to manage twists and turns
Q5 Whatever I put out there worth sharing, I include my school's handle and district's hashtag.
The nice thing about is that it is free and quite powerful in my opinion
ran an tedx with her school
A5: I like to team up with apps and have them feature great student work & publicize it. Example: https://t.co/qOp2bHqxj8
Use Ss created video w/ solid rubric including standards - shows comprehension better than any MC test.
Share all the great things Ss are accomplishing! Ss love making quick Movie Trailers to share learning. https://t.co/dxx9p2mHAj
that'll be fun :) your snapchat story from that day i was there was classic!
2nd graders do live reflection for their multitouch books made in
A5: Making use of responsible branding that models good while showcasing your Ss work and your Ts leadership.
Monica movie trailers are so powerful!
I'm quite good with words and I struggle w/o a script on video yet never use speaker notes for my talks.
Last question coming up! Question 6 will be here in 3 minutes followed by
A5: Using social media to share the awesomeness happening at your school
You answers and thoughts have been rocking my world tonight!
Yes, Ss are not only engaged, but take ownership in their learning.
. Happy to hear that. I'm here to help. :)
Knowing you can go back & fix mistakes on video makes you more of a perfectionist & nervous. Live - you just go!
A3. A great way to learn (or assess learning) is to teach others. Video as a tool for Ss to create authentic demos of learning.
improv class could help with live videos.
I know would love to teach that class.
Matt Albers , , Wilson Ramos , , Jeff Weaver , , , 1-0 Pens ,
Make them the teachers! I agree with this tweet 200%!
A6: 1) It creates metacognition which is ALWAYS good; 2) it creates a digital archive (portfolio); 3) it draws upon many skills
A6: Video is so versatile and engaging. It is also so easy to incorporate now. Not to use it would not be wise
WOW! Love these 3 points! https://t.co/w4MtOkWZkW
A6: 1) It creates metacognition which is ALWAYS good; 2) it creates a digital archive (portfolio); 3) it draws upon many skills
a6: because 400 hours are uploaded to youtube every minute. clearly video is important. great for review, creation & learning
A6: Kids today are video driven. Use what they know and will help them learn. It's about them!
A6: With the use of video, Ss can see their errors, share their success, and build their portfolios.
This is why he's the President elect. I have a Blazing Saddles quote but I'll hold on to that one. https://t.co/pGa9gzx4Gc
A6: 1) It creates metacognition which is ALWAYS good; 2) it creates a digital archive (portfolio); 3) it draws upon many skills
A6: Because video is relevant and engaging. Meet them where they at. Make the learning experience memorable for Ss and Ts. Fun!
My buds & say: "Tell your story, or someone else will." https://t.co/pzdeoIcygX
A5: Using social media to share the awesomeness happening at your school
When we can use their passion to put them in the driver's seat of the learning - That's what it's all about.
: What did you learn tonight that you will try to implement as soon as you start next year.
That's the key. the STUDENTS passion. Not the TEACHERS.
That rocks. Open the classroom, open the conversation. Build positive Dig Cit skills too!
This is very true! Be the author of your story
is a great tool for Ss to use as a digital portfolio of their learning.
I learned that next year I will challenge my students with more LIVE video than ever before!
If it was the teacher's passion my classes would have been on the golf course or in the pool A LOT!
Passionate students can only stem from a passionate teacher
Use of to help teach kids how to do live video in short segments before progressing to longer.
A6: Ss who make the video r not just learning material but understand their own abilities and what they can do!
Thanks to for hosting and all of you here tonight. Thanks for inspiring and collaborating your knowledge.
