Hi #MSFTEduChat . Amanda here in Ireland! Scheduling my answers as I won't be finished work on time to join in live. Can't wait to catch up and read everyone's answers later on though!
When I think of Women in STEM my mom comes to mind because she is a strong leader and works hard every day of the week to accomplish her goals. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker: Ss: when I think of women in STEM I think of my mom who is a manager that is really lucky because she has never had anyone say you can’t do this because you are a girl. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker: Ss: When I think of women role models in STEM I think of my cousin Diana who is a police detective because she worked really hard to become a detective . No one has told her she can’t be a police detective.and I think she deserves her job. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker: Ss: when I think of women in STEM I think of my smart sisters because they never believe the negative way, they stay strong for their self image no matter what, and they never give up being risk takers #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Amanda Glover from Tampa, FL I teach 4th grade math/science/technology and am SOO excited to be one of many hosts for this months #msfteduchat about #WomeninSTEM
Icebreaker: Ss: when I think of Women in stem i think of Women inventors that made something that they made that helped people but they didn't get credit for what they made. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker: Ss: When I think of women in STEM I think of Ms. Santos because she is a great engineer and she is always inspiring me from how strong she is and what it to her to become an engineer and how she didn't give up on her dream. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
The usual mindset that girls don't really like STEM subjects! We need to push all students esp girls to take up stem subjects. #MSFTEduChat#womeninSTEMM
When I think of #WomenInSTEM I think of some of the amazing female colleagues I have had in Science depts in different schools who ignited passion for their subjects in the classroom and weren't afraid to push the boundaries with their own development and their Ss.
Icebreaker: Ss: When I think of women in stem I think of Ms.Santos, she worked with us as a teacher candidate for a couple months and she is an amazing engineer which I think that that's really cool when we had a chance to build things in class #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
We are Grade 4 and 5 students from McMurrich Junior Public School in Toronto, Ontario. We will be participating and tweeting in the TweetMeet #WomenInSTEM happening right now! #MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker Ss: when I think about women in STEM it remind me of my mom because she is a Vice Principal and helps look for opportunities for all her students and teachers to do STEM in school #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A1. Lack of women in STEM means we are lacking the perspectives of half the world's population (more or less).it also means we are looking at a male centric STEM approach. So we do need more women in STEM to make it a wholesome platform #MSFTEduChat@MeenakshiUberoi
Hi everyone! Adam here from Chicago! #MSFTEduChat Icebreaker: When I think of women in #STEM I think of the amazing roll models of @DrBrookeHaag & @Jaqster
A1: Both men and women, scientifically are wired differently with their processing and problem solving. A variety of opinions, personalities, and perspectives offer a well-rounded solution when critically thinking. #MsftEduchat
#MSFTEduChat How to encourage girls in STEM ,Surround your kids with positive female role-models Find out if any of the mums at school work in STEM, and then point this out to your child ,Seek out books and movies that feature strong female STEM characters..
Q1. The world needs more women in STEM to inspire the next generation of brave girls to create the future they want. Let's close the tech gender gap and make it 50:50 by 2030 #GlobalGoals#womeninSTEM#STEM#MSFTEduChat
A1. Diversity creates innovation! More #WomenInSTEM means more diverse teams, ideas, and technologies. Women represent half of the world’s population, and their role in STEM fields helps ensure innovation for everyone. #MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker - When I think of an exemplary woman in STEM, I think of @Astro_Ellen. She set an excellent example for millions, and was incredibly generous - joining my students at my old school to tell her story, encouraging our K-4's to push themselves to greatness!
#MSFTeduChat
#MSFTEduChat How to encourage girls in STEM ,Surround your kids with positive female role-models Find out if any of the mums at school work in STEM, and then point this out to your child ,Seek out books and movies that feature strong female STEM characters..
A1: The world needs more women in STEM in order to represent half of the world's population and ensure diversity in approaches and solutions. #MSFTeduChat#WomeninSTEM
A1 There are many challenges in our world today...passionate women are needed to meet those STEM challenges with creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking! #MSFTEduchat
We are Grade 4 and 5 students from McMurrich Junior Public School in Toronto, Ontario. We will be participating and tweeting in the TweetMeet #WomenInSTEM happening right now! #MSFTEduChat
A1: Ss: The world needs women in STEM so people don't grow up to think that only males can be in STEM but everyone can. Women know to take risks and do whatever they want to do even if they are a girl #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A2: Ss: We engage women so they enjoy STEM activities by giving women the same rights for everything and I think women can do better work related to women’s needs than man. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A1. I also think is how you look at coding/tech.. In the pasts its been boys doing coding and playing games.. Now finally the doors are open and I think females are more open to it #MSFTEduChat#womeninSTEMM
Women are blessed with 21 CLD skills. :) Teamwork, collaboration, knowledge, management skills, creative thinking and communication skills. #msfteduchat#womeninstem
A1 Ss: The world needs women in STEM because if there were no women in STEM there would be no good jobs for women and that is the opposite of equality. Women can give their side of life experiences and be innovative #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker: Ss: When I think about #womeninSTEM I think of when we made w/ teacher candidate who is an engineer. Shared her story about job interview where she was not respected b/c she's girl & girls’ don’t get their hands dirty @amandasantos_ed built race cars! #MSFTEduChat
After seeing the documentary, we have to start with recognizing Hedy Lamar! To think she developed and invented frequency hopping in the 50s too! #WomenInSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A1: Ss: STEM needs women to inspire girls to take risks and stand up for themselves, to fight for what they want to achieve and to be strong even during the tough times #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Love to see students participating and teaching us in today's #MSFTEduChat! we need their voices and to hear their perspective. LOVE IT! #MicrosoftEDU#STEMchat
We are Grade 4 and 5 students from McMurrich Junior Public School in Toronto, Ontario. We will be participating and tweeting in the TweetMeet #WomenInSTEM happening right now! #MSFTEduChat
Icebreaker - When I think of an exemplary woman in STEM, I think of @Astro_Ellen. She set an excellent example for millions, and was incredibly generous - joining my students at my old school to tell her story, encouraging our K-4's to push themselves to greatness!
#MSFTeduChat
A1: Ss: When I think of a woman who can do amazing things I think of the classes former student teacher Ms.Santos because she helped build race cars which is one of many examples that woman can do amazing things and should be equal@amandasantos_ed #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A1: 1/3 The world needs #WomeninSTEM as they/we bring new perspectives, address biases, equity and meet/impact the needs of women worldwide. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU
#MSFTEduChat The shortage of skilled workers and students in STEM is only half of the story. More alarming is the shortage of female skilled workers and students in STEM Women make up only 15-25% of the current STEM workforce, and the gap is broadening #WomenInSTEM
A1: Why WOULDN'T we need women in STEM? They bring a whole different perspective on how the world is experienced. We'd miss half of the ideas, inspiration, and opportunities if we don't include. #MSFTEduChat#MIEExpert
A1. Careers in STEM will be so important to solve issues the world faces in the future & the stats show that diverse teams outperform non-diverse teams to solve such problems. We need female AND male minds working together in these STEM careers #MSFTEduChat
A1: 2/3 Growing up as a kid in the 70’s/80’s I didn’t have STEM role models. I wanted to be a carpenter & build furniture at the shop with my dad (new immigrant). Both he and I were the butt of jokes/insult, I no longer allowed 2 go to the shop 2 build. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
Love this...men and women often bring a different perspective! Both are needed, but our girls need to be given the opportunity to explore and grow in this area. #MSFTEduChat
A1. Lack of women in STEM means we are lacking the perspectives of half the world's population (more or less).it also means we are looking at a male centric STEM approach. So we do need more women in STEM to make it a wholesome platform #MSFTEduChat@MeenakshiUberoi
A1: 3/3 Whenever I brought up the subject it was quickly shot down as something shameful. I let it go and focussed on my art. I don’t want any of my nieces (4 & 17 years old) or students to ever experience being shut down because they are a girl. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
#MSFTEduChat, #WomeninSTEM and #MicrosoftEDU a1: Women in STEM are organized, multitasked in life and determined to pursue the goal, sweet, serene, concrete and safe
To be successful in the sciences one has to achieve the confidence to think independently, to follow one's instincts, trust one's training and take a calculated leap into the unknown.
A1b Half the world are women, and lacking their perspective in STEM is a disservice to the world. Often female perspectives just haven't been considered before and it needs to be. #MIEExpert@GEDSB21C#MSFTEduChat
A1) I always think of Roslind Franklin, Sally Ride, Jane Goodall, and Wonder Woman too :-) As a science teacher I try to make sure both genders are represented with scientific discoveries #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#MIEExpert
We need to teach every girl to first start believing in herself. This will be the first step towards encouraging women in STEM. Learning becomes fruitful only when we are able to enjoy what we learn☺️ #MSFTEduChat#WomenInSTEM
a1. I am not being biased in the slightest, but I have the best department in the school, creative, innovative passionate IT/Computing teachers who I look up to......by the way I am the only male in the department! #MSFTEduChat
Kids can construct whatever they want – girls love to use their Magnatiles to build elaborate palaces for their fairies – and in the meantime learn science, engineering and maths principles through play #MSFTEduChat#WomenInSTEM
A2 Ask them! Seek their input & find out what motivates & interests them. Provide opportunities to use what they are learning, to collaborate, explore, create, question, solve, and to learn from mentors. Challenge & encourage. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomeninSTEM
A2: Ss: We engage women so they enjoy STEM activities by giving them the same equal rights that men are provided so that everyone can enjoy it, be innovative and contribute together #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A2 - Just like with any work we do with Ss we need to build relationships to know how to reach them as #learners, then through that we build #STEM activities that are engaging due to their interests. #msfteduchat#WomenInSTEM
A2. We can generate excitement around STEM activities by showing girls that they can use their creativity to solve problems with science, technology, engineering & math. Offering hands-on experience & opportunities to connect STEM knowledge to the real world is key! #MSFTEduChat
use real world approach and pose a problem which they can relate to. Ask them to solve it using STEM and let it be non competitive.Girls/ women are more sensitive than their counterparts so they are more likely to come up with better solutions #MSFTEduChat
A1: Seeing is believing. My role-models each had something different in common with me, and it helped me imagine myself in the career paths I had taken.
#MSFTEduChat
A2: We can engage girls by presenting problems to solve that they are interested in. Ask them what problems they want to solve and then guide/coach them in developing solutions. #MSFTEduChat
A2. I think just like everything else you have to adapt and differentiate your class to include on what attracts them. Its not so black and white anymore. Show them whats possible and how its being applied, #MSFTEduChat#womeninSTEMM
I am very curious to hear which student experiences have been most engaging to spark an interest in STEM! I bet @dougbergmanUSA has ideas he can share in our #MSFTEduChat
This story's both heartbreaking and hopeful. We're sad that that was your young experience, but glad your passion carried you into role-modelling STEM.
#MSFTEduChat
I believe that we engage them in STEM activities, just as we would any other type of activity. First discover their interests, and determine what activities can blossom forth from those same interests. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomeninSTEMhttps://t.co/EMl4gI6egJ
a2. Connect them with role models in the real world. We had girls interested in engineering connect with an amazing lady in Germany via @skypeclassroom who gave them such advice. to hear "I want to be like her" -priceless! #MSFTEduchat
A2 Start at the youngest grades...giving girls the opportunity to explore and question...building on their passions and interests. We need to shift the mindset! #MSFTEduchat
A2: Embed in culture of learning. Promoting a growth mindset! Time 2 be curious, 2 explore, play & build. Opportunities 2 identify a problem they want 2 solve & guide girls thru the design thinking 2 plan, iterate, reflect on feedback & share solutions. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
#MSFTEduChat, #WomeninSTEM and #MicrosoftEDU A2: Women in STEM have to show their enthusiasm, love for their passion, their determination and the desire to engage as a force of nature! Be.. Women in STEM of the 21st century #MIEExpert
A2: To engage girls in STEM introduce it early in schools, expose to a wide variety of STEM experiences, and bring in #WomeninSTEM role models. #MSFTeduChat#MicrosoftEDU
A2: Find what motivates them, and approach from that angle. Personalized learning strategies, differentiation (removing barriers), and opportunities to express their learning in their own way! This works for anyone!
#MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomeninSTEM
A2: By giving girls access to engaging STEM activities from a young age we can boost their engagement in these subjects. Access to female role models like @theTrendyTechie@NataliePanek@kfacciol help reinforce positive messages about being a #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A2 - Just like with any work we do with Ss we need to build relationships to know how to reach them as #learners, then through that we build #STEM activities that are engaging due to their interests. #msfteduchat#WomenInSTEM
A2 Engaging girls should involve good pedagogy & approaches that speak to them - collaboration, relationships with mentors, personally relevant, open-ended projects, & allowing them to apply creativity. A good resource: https://t.co/49lT5j21bS#MIEExpert@GEDSB21C#MSFTEduChat
I believe it's a story that many girls have experienced and that we need to continue to provide opportunities for all students to find their spark, be creative and take risks #MSFTEduChat
A2. We can increase engagement by making real life connections, we like to see how it makes sense in our immediate situations not just showing off who is the smartest #MSFTEduChat
#MSFTEduChat, #WomeninSTEM#MicrosoftEDU
Surely girls also enjoy STEM activities as I have many girls in my class who are doing very good in STEM activities but if art is added to the STEM activity I feel more girls would be intrested
A2: we should spark creativity with STEM learning activities and shape girls vision by empowering them to DREAM BIG, THINK BIG! Our world really need STEM girls and women
#MSFTEduChat
#msfteduchat#womeninstem
To engage and involve girls in STEM, more of logical thinking tasks in a way interdisciplinary should be assigned slowly generating interest towards STEM.
I think of women challenging the roles they are traditionally encouraged into, and engaging in what truly interests them, despite challenges. As a woman in both tech and education, I find myself between two worlds most days! #MSFTEduChat
A2. The same way any student becomes engaged- giving them student centred learning opportunities which will allow them to be innovative/creative and encourage them further, providing positive feedback and being a good role-model. #MSFTEduChat
A1 #MSFTEduChat in France many technical school heads sometimes discourage girls from coming. There are only 4 % of girls in engineering schools in electronics. But when i have girls dedigned and making robots in my class i can see the confidence and skills they acquire.
There are a few really awesome kits out there that are gender-neutral, or marketed towards girls, and I’m a big fan of these .kids learn how to follow instructions and build something really cool..#MSFTEduChat#WomenInSTEM
A2 Start at the youngest grades...giving girls the opportunity to explore and question...building on their passions and interests. We need to shift the mindset! #MSFTEduchat
#msfteduchat#womeninstem
Women are the best workforce. Proud to be associated with the school where women play a major role whether it be Human resource or I.T or Teaching, non-teaching staff.
#MSFTEduChat, #WomeninSTEM#MicrosoftEDU
Surely girls also enjoy STEM activities as I have many girls in my class who are doing very good in STEM activities but if art is added to the STEM activity I feel more girls would be intrested
We can engage girls by developing the adequate skills and supporting initiatives, researches, mentorship and scholarship schemes to increase their participation in STEM .
#MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU#WomeninStem@DePedagogics
A2: Insert choice. My Ss built apps at the end of the year to celebrate their learning. One condition: apps needed to have content we learned this year. They all took off in interesting directions!
Here’s “Health City,” an app that explores choice itself.
#MSFTEduChat
I am very curious to hear which student experiences have been most engaging to spark an interest in STEM! I bet @dougbergmanUSA has ideas he can share in our #MSFTEduChat
I believe that we engage them in STEM activities, just as we would any other type of activity. First discover their interests, and determine what activities can blossom forth from those same interests. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomeninSTEMhttps://t.co/EMl4gI6egJ
A1: Because where would we be without computer programming and ice cream 🤷🏻♀️ We need women’s brilliance to continue to solve problems and change the world for the better! #msfteduchat
18 Inventions By Women That Changed The World https://t.co/a6n41c2d1c via @hcjewell
#MSFTEduChat#STEM Tyee Middle School in @TheBSD405 has an amazing STEM for Girls program...its called femi-STEM :-) @Hacking_STEM projects will be one of next activities
A2: we should talk more about women who dedicated their work to science and explore local examples, maybe bring local #womeninSTEM into the classroom to share their experience with students.
#MSFTEduChat
A.2: Create contexts that girls feel safe and engaged in learning in. Girls are still over spoken in classroom contexts with male peers, and often defer responses to questions on STEM related topics. Create opportunities for STEM mentorship in girl-focussed groups. #MSFTEduChat
Agree. & Ss don't even need to wait until it is their career. Let's empower them to use their resources to help people and bring positive change now. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomenInSTEM
A3 @SkypeClassroom provides real-world & relevant experiences. Ss can connect w/#WomeninSTEM, be inspired, learn from their experience, expand concept of career opportunities & possibilities. #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU

On the topic of #WomenInTechnology and increasing skills in #STEM, it is important that women are not seen to be a problem that needs to be fixed. We are part of the solution. #MSFTEduChat
#MSFTEduChat,#WomeninSTEM#MicrosoftEDU a4: connection with the real problem is the focus of my math teaching in collaboration with my collegues; energy, tellecomunications, computer sciences are always connected with my teaching but in critical way!to think,understand,create,..

A5: Girls need to see themselves in STEM roles, female role models and mentors who inspire and share overcoming challenges and reaching goals. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU
A5. "Mentor" is a broad term & there are many but I think parents as the most crucial. They are often overlooked but are highly influential to "empowering" their daughters. Educating parents about the importance of #womeninSTEM could be what is needed moving forwards. #MSFTEduChat
A mentor who truly cares and invests in their pupils can change a student's outlook on STEM as a whole. Having a mentor to guide you with care, knowledge, and compassion is the best way to nuture a budding passion for STEM.
#MicrosoftEdu#MSFTEduChat#WomenInSTEM

a5. Sadly, I believe, there are too many children who do not see the benefit of mentors because those who should naturally be that to them have failed them. We need to work hard to connect them with those who will be the role model they need #MSFTEduChat
A5. Mentors can also inspire and motivate students by qouting real life examples of people who excelled in STEM in diverse conditions. #MSFTEduChat@MicrosoftEDU
A5. One of the most important roles in education transformation is relational. It is not about STEM, tech or gender. It is about relationships, relationships and relationships. Students won't work for people they don't like (Rita Pierson). #msfteduchat

A5: Mentors are hugely influential! Positive role models, not to mention being able to talk to someone that is actually doing what one is interested in! Relationships matter!
#MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEDU#WomeninSTEM
Mentors can tell students’ about their own experiences and how their passions led them there. If a student has passion for STEM, all it takes is for someone a few steps ahead to say they can achieve whatever they put their mind too! #MSFTEduChat#WomeninSTEM@MicrosoftEDU
Mentors are facilitators first, observers next and teachers in the end.We just need to create the conditions which will help our learners evolve with the help of their innate qualities. We are just the means towards the end😊#MSFTEduChat#WomeninSTEM
Girls are no less than boys in any field. Give them chance to show their potential, have faith in their ability and let them expriment fearlessly. You can see wonderful results!!! #MSFTEduChat#MicrosoftEdu

A6. Tomorrow is too short a deadline .The policies are in place. The statistics are out there. But there is still not enough action on the ground to make a real difference.Ts need to be given time to upskill so that the best learning opportunities are given to Ss. #MSFTEduChat 1/2

A6: Ss: I could improve gender equality in STEM by proving that girls/women are just as capable as boys/men are and showing people that it's wrong to treat someone a certain way just because of their gender or skin color. Leading by example! #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
A6. By monitoring, and evaluation of policies aimed at successfully tackling the issue of gender inequality in STEM and encourage the girl child to explore the potential in themselves. #MSFTEduChat#WomenInSTEM
A6: We need to check our bias; be mindful and intentional as we promote science, technology, engineering and math across all grades. Curiosity is in all children and we need to continue nurturing that curiosity, asking questions and seeking solutions. #WomeninSTEM#MSFTEduChat
