Welcome 2 a very special #HipHopEd chat. Tonight we are exploring the words and wisdom within Dr. King's final speech that was given 50 years ago tonight "I've been to the mountain top"
Dr. King’s “I’ve Been to The Mountaintop” speech is so moving. But before I get into that can I just point out what an instrumental force the CHURCH was in the fight for civil rights. A voice that, sadly, I find largely silent now. #HipHopEd

“The nation is sick, trouble is in the land, confusion all around. That's a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough can you see the stars” #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
Dr. King used the scriptures to challenge the church on what their role should be when it comes to plight of the poor and disenfranchised and sadly the ball has been dropped too often #HipHopEd

"The question is not, "If I stop to help this man in need, what will happen to me?" The question is, "If I do not stop to help the sanitation workers, what will happen to them?" That's the question" #HipHopEd#GoodSamaritanLaw
While re-reading this speech, I was thinking during his mental flight that this is the journey mathematics teachers should be taking students on, looking at the development of mathematics as a cultural & historical journey #HipHopEd
Yes, he was masterful at bringing the scriptures to life for the common day and drawing lessons out of - the way he pointed Pharaoh’s formula for control and manipulation: Division and fueling infighting #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop

"I would even come up to the day of the Renaissance, and get a quick picture of all that the Renaissance did for the cultural and aesthetic life of man. But I wouldn't stop there." A reminder that our work never stops #HipHopEd
Listening to "I've Been to the Mountain Top" makes me understand further why schools romanticize Dr. King's legacy by focusing on "I Have A Dream." They don't want us WOKE #hiphoped

Dr. King pointed out the main issue of civil rights: Injustice. We, too, must teach our young people to focus, singularly on the issues of injustice. #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
“Bull Connor didn't know history. He knew a kind of physics that somehow didn't relate to the trans-physics that we knew about. And that was the fact that there was a certain kind of fire that no water could put out.” #DrKing#HipHopEd
When you study “I’ve been to the Mountain Top” in the natural and the spiritual, what else was left for Dr. King to say to us as a nation and a society? #HipHopEd
"We are saying that we are determined to be men. We are determined to be people." -Dr. King, Reading this, I feel that this would be a great point to connect to the 3/5 Compromise, mathematically & historically explore this decision by the states #HipHopEd
Dr. King presented the injustice of black people as a spiritual issue where he used God's will as the litmus test which will stand the test of time #HipHopEd
Reading this, you can see his incredible belief and fearlessness in fighting for it. He was willing to sacrifice and LOSE anything for it. I see this in our young people, they’re willing to fight and lose for their beliefs. They’re leading powerfully now. #HipHopEd#DrKing

“We mean business now” and we seek to gain our “rightful place in God’s world” are far departures from the docile portrayals of King schools usher out erryy Feb. Helping students peep the inconsistencies is part of our work. #HipHopEd#Mountaintop

This! MLK’s words are often manipulated and used as a way to silence dissidents. Yet those opposed to Kaepernick taking a knee conveniently forget the “the greatness of America is the right to protest for rights” line. 🙃 #HipHopEd
Peace #HipHopEd just getting in from the day but excited to build on 50 year legacy of the 1 of the greatest Americans and Humans in modern history #MLK50
Not only was he so well versed in academic topics, Dr. King knew his constitutional rights - this is something WE need to be well versed in ourselves so that our young people can also know. #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop

“Who is it that is supposed to articulate the longings and aspirations of the people more than the preacher? Somewhere the preacher must have a kind of fire shut up in his bones.” #HipHopEd

Mountaintop,” Dr. King’s

The wisdom in #Mountaintop is that the majority of the speech was made up of directives for the masses because Dr. King knew that he wasn't going to lead much longer #HipHopEd
I think conversations about caliber, which inevitably create hierarchies, ignore the dynamic young leaders that are already pervading our country and catalyzing change. His spirt informs and permeates who they are and what they are seeking to being to fruition. #HipHopEd
A while back we compared strong urban teachers to preachers. I think this quote with the word teacher is just as strong. We need to BRING it as educators, move the crowd. #TrueMC#HipHopEd#DrKing
“Who is it that is supposed to articulate the longings and aspirations of the people more than the preacher? Somewhere the preacher must have a kind of fire shut up in his bones.” #HipHopEd
"I have seen the promised-land and I may not get there with you..." Gave me chills. Also a reminder there will be roadblocks and cynics trying to keep your progressive views of what education should be from being realized but you have to keep on going #hiphoped
Still so true: “Let us rise up tonight with a greater readiness. Let us stand with a greater determination. And let us move on in these powerful days, these days of challenge to make America what it ought to be. We have an opportunity to make America a better nation.” #HipHopEd
"I'm delighted to see each of you here tonight in spite of a storm warning. " When we are authentic in front of youth, and create spaces that speak to their hearts and souls - they'll always show up #HipHopEd#DrKing
I don't believe one can be that fearless without knowing that the work that they are doing is not by their choosing and therefore they are not working for themselves. Perfect love casts out fear #HipHopEd
King said global catastrophes were certain if the plight of POC, throughout the world, didn't radically change. He connected the people in Memphis to global questions of capitalism, stagnant and unfair wages, and the inability of people to live decent lives.

One of the strategies that the SCLC did brilliantly was fight economically. Have Ss make a t chart of the stores they buy from and a matching list of local, minority owned businesses - hell makebthat for yourself, I’m about to. #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
When the slogan “Make America Great Again” leads to the Presidency in 2016, it is clear that they are referring to a nation that at a minimum predates #Mountaintop 4/3/68 and doesn’t include people of color #HipHopEd#Facts
“And so I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man! Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!!” #HipHopEd

King was using his knowledge of American history to illustrate and affirm why the sanitation strike was a noble and righteous cause. Plus, King connected his work as a truth teller to the moral and ethical obligation that undergirded his vocation as a minister. #HipHopEd
Welcome 2 a very special #HipHopEd chat. Tonight we are exploring the words and wisdom within Dr. King's final speech that was given 50 years ago tonight "I've been to the mountain top"
Economics win wars for sure and we don’t talk about that enough with our young people. What’s your favorite way to build wealth? How do you teach it to the young people you steward? #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
"Now we're going to march again, and we've got to march again, in order to put the issues where it is supposed to be..." His reinforcement of the tenacity and stamina required for the fight was evident!! #HipHopEd
"It's all right to talk about "streets flowing with milk and honey," but God has commanded us to be concerned about the slums down here, and his children who can't eat three square meals a day." #hiphoped#MLK

Criticism can be rooted in love & support. As educators we need to show students love & support so they are willing to accept that our criticism is meant to help them grow. #HipHopEd
The wisdom in #Mountaintop is that the majority of the speech was made up of directives for the masses because Dr. King knew that he wasn't going to lead much longer #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Fired up to share & build on the legacy of #MLK50 tomorrow...he died fighting for the rights of sanitation workers & some influential folks in HH got the nerve to call service industry folks peasants #LeastAmongUs#sankofa#SANKOFA
"Now we're going to march again, and we've got to march again, in order to put the issues where it is supposed to be..." His reinforcement of the tenacity and stamina required for the fight was evident!! #HipHopEd
Yes! That’s what I JUST thought about as I read his lines about the importance of preachers. He would say the same about teachers, I think! #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
"Normal fear protects us; abnormal fear paralyzes us. Normal fear motivates us to improve our individual and collective welfare; abnormal fear constantly poisons and distorts our inner lives. Our problem is not to be rid of fear but rather to harness and master it." - MLK, Jr.
One of the greatest attributes of a great preacher is Empathy. Dr. King embodied this, he knew how to reach the people around them because he was a keen observer of what brought them pain and joy. I’d argue that empathy is critical for a teacher as well. #HipHopEd#DrKing
"Normal fear protects us; abnormal fear paralyzes us. Normal fear motivates us to improve our individual & collective welfare; abnormal fear constantly poisons & distorts our inner lives. Our problem is not to be rid of fear but rather to harness & master it."-MLK, Jr. #HipHopEd
And just as a fanboy, the beginning of his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech is absolutely iconic as he takes his imaginary flight through history. #HipHopEd
Agree that empathy is critical... we also need to teach Ss how to build empathy for others and a bias for action. We use #designthinking as our framework - all Ss learn @LUMAInstitute methods tied to social-justice focused PBL #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Sadly MLK is portrayed and misrepresented in schools used as a figure of convenience instead of the revolutionary instigator, agitator and soldier he truly was...tomorrow...WE have to help out youth connect to MLK's radicalism #HipHopEd
The poetry of using "If I had sneezed" is nothing short of brilliant. He mimicked the time travel from the beginning of the speech in reverse by saying what he would have missed #hiphoped
"For when people get caught up with that which is right and they are willing to sacrifice for it, there is no stopping point short of victory." #HipHopEd Every attempt to explain injustice should captivate, invite + personalize the pain.
#HipHopEd very important to hear the real words of #MLK ‘s words in proper context like listening to raw songs vs commercialized ‘Pop’ music the man was much more than the sanitized caricature the media promotes
How about his ability to listen to and remember the words of young people? Like the 9th grader who was glad that he didn’t sneeze 🤧? He believed so@much in the power of young people. #HipHopEd
MLK’s words are the outcome of deep study and prayer. They are the result of reflective wisdom and discernment. They are the product of prophetic and moral courage. #HipHopEd
I wonder how the commodification and subsequent deification of King is intended to foster complacency and give us a convenient out? How does his deification absolve us from emulating the kind of candor, love, and fortitude that was evidenced that night in Memphis?

In the episode with T.I. in #RAPture he also discusses Dr. King & Malcolm's politics and approach with his oldest...who showed his depth of understanding on the topic #HipHopEd#intergenerationalDialogue
In terms of his mechanics, he had such a great way of using repetition & rhyme to get a point across. Let’s learn this and get the phrase “I already said that” out of our pedagogical vocabulary #HipHopEd#DrKing#Mountaintop
Dr King masterfully took a strike by one industry of workers in one city and presented a blueprint for a community to rise up and challenge and change the direction of a nation #HipHopEd
It’s important to understand, as well, that MLK was not lionized at this point in his life. His popularity had waned. Yet and still, he didn’t lose his voice. My takeaway...don’t allow any circumstance to silence your voice. #HipHopEd
I winder this a lot. My dad used to tell me as a little girl “be careful when the books teach you too much about only King” they’re trying to say only one of us was great and warning us about what they did to him. He made me look for more examples and within myself. #HipHopEd

"..." God's preacher must talk about the new New York, the new Atlanta, the new Philadelphia, the new Los Angeles, the new Memphis, TN." #HipHopEd A ministry absent of a transformative vision for their city and beyond is void of basic Gospel principles.

What’s your mountaintop? What is your vision? How often do you articulate it? I’ve started to articulate my vision for education in my city on the daily to all who will listen & it just fires me up more! #HipHopEd#GetThoseGoosebumpsEveryTime#DrKing#Mountaintop
Review Matthew 25:31-46 and "I've Been To The Mountain Top" to see what our assignment is in God's eyes when it comes to the least of these #HipHopEd@HFAPgh#LyricsAndScriptures
#HipHopEd#MLK’s unconditional unrequited love for America was amazing but yet he never lost hope even in the face of his own demise yet he still had doubts. That displayed his humanity. Still wondered if he was leading his ppl into burning house
Teachers don’t be ashamed to cry in class tomorrow. We are celebrating life and legacy while reflecting on the depths of hate that still permeate in our nation #HipHopEd#MLK50
His ability 2 acknowledge&accept reality,2 make moving forward more https://t.co/rmt3f4OijY's counterproductive2approach stus as if 1 knows their life/will fix https://t.co/aj887Ia8UH acknowledging our realities&stu's(b4 moving forward w a plan of action)we fair better #HipHopEd
Let's not forget to examine the impact of the urban cities that were literally on FIRE once news got out of the murder of #MLK some cities haven't fully recovered 50 years later #HipHopEd
