We will look at tonight's topic through six questions. Please include A1 for Q1 and #ycsdchat so that we can all see your post. I'm so excited to talk about ONE WORD with you! #ycsdchat
A1: To achieve my goals, I always have to keep them present in my mind. Visual reminders of my goal always help me do that or telling others to keep me accountable. #ycsdchat
A1: Although this doesn't always work for me, I do like to write things down in a journal. It helps me to go back to my original thoughts and reasons for making a change #ycsdchat
I love accountability partners even if it’s just through social media. Forcing myself to share the goal by verbalizing it to an audience helps keep me accountable. #YCSDChat
A1: I try to break it up into smaller, more short-term goals/resolutions. First, achieve this...then, move onto this and so on. I celebrate the small achievements which discourages me from giving up #ycsdchat
A1: To quote the Beatles, “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Anything from a support system to a healthy dose of mild peer pressure helps me achieve my goals. Personal motivation helps, too. #ycsdchat
I'm always afraid to share with others because I don't want them to know that I failed when things don't work out. Maybe I need to start small with one or two people who aren't too judgmental #ycsdchat
#YCSDchat I am a planner chic!! I keep my goals front and center in my planner and visit them often. I make a plan to accomplish goals step by step. A goal without a plan is a dream. Right?!? #YHS
A1 #ycsdchat My goals in teaching are to inspire a love of learning through art. I stay focused with short lessons built around cross curricular projects.
I even put reminders in my outlook calendar in advance to set aside time to make sure I go back every week or few weeks- if it’s on my calendar it’s more likely to happen! #ycsdchat
Happy Wednesday all! A1: I have the kiddos write one goal each morning. They check back at the end of the day to see if they achieved their goal. Up to them if it continues to be a goal moving forward. #ycsdchat
A2: Disappointed in myself, but eventually I reflect on whether or not the goal was realistic or even something that I really wanted enough to fight for it. #ycsdchat
A2: I honestly don't feel the best, but once the pity party is over - I realize it's just time to reflect and revise. Determine ways to either keep the same goal or understand that wasn't right for you and move on - and that is okay #ycsdchat
A2: I think I’m hardest on myself! When I don’t reach a goal it doesn’t go away. It keeps knocking on my brain 🧠 and asking when I’ll try again. #YCSDchat.
A2: I honestly don't feel the best, but once the pity party is over - I realize it's just time to reflect and revise. Determine ways to either keep the same goal or understand that wasn't right for you and move on - and that is okay #ycsdchat
A2: I revisit my goal, figure out if it was realistic, revisit a different approach and try again. Never give up on what you feel is important. #ycsdchat
A2-at one time defeated; but with the reflection piece in place more often I find that it wasn't always the right goal and have redirected and repurposed a goal into something that works #ycsdchat
A2: When I don’t reach a goal, I try to reflect on the reasons why. Was I motivated to begin with? Were my checkpoints attainable? Did I give myself a reasonable deadline? Was I following through with my action plan? #ycsdchat
A2: if I don't meet a goal, I look at what the goal was, how I tried to reach it, and what went wrong in that plan. Through some reflection, I re-assess, re-set, or resolve to find a different goal. #ycsdchat
A2 Jon Gordon’s book The Energy Bus was a game changer for me related shifting my mindset and dealing with the energy vampire who might undermined the goal. #ycsdchat
A2: When I don't reach a goal I usually blame myself even if I can't control why it wasn't reached. Then I'll go about trying to find another way to meet the goal or resolution. #ycsdchat
A2. I feel guilty and beat myself up internally. I try to talk myself into getting back on track - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Interested in others' strategies. #ycsdchat
A2 goal setting is an opportunity for reflection. You have to do it daily. Think about empty days- days where you did not make progress on a goal. Runners think about empty miles- running without purpose. It resets your mind. #ycsdchat
A2 #ycsdchat my goal is to keep students excited to complete a project. When some students aren't feeling it I allow them to take it in their own direction. If that doesnt work I feel defeated but I dont give up.
A1: Accountability is so hard! For me, I need to do small things..1 at a time...with a bigger goal in mind.
My planner this year has monthly goals and also a space to note my top 5 priorities. So far, it’s working well! I 💜 my Happy Planner! @planahappylife#ycsdchat
A2: depending on the goal, it’s a great opportunity to model failure for your students! I’ve done that with lessons and it really impacts them to see you deal and regroup. #ycsdchat
This is so hard for me. I get so hung up on how people will perceive my weakness. I can see this in my daughter. She is so worried about others, she has a hard time making simple decisions like where to eat dinner. #ycsdchat
A2: I think I’m hardest on myself! When I don’t reach a goal it doesn’t go away. It keeps knocking on my brain 🧠 and asking when I’ll try again. #YCSDchat.
A2: As I have gotten older, I've tried to reflect and make adjustments as I work towards my goals. I'm a little more flexible and open to altering my plan as long as I maintain the outcome #ycsdchat
A3: I Love this one!!! We all need to focus and stop trying to accomplish more than humanly possible. Create the plan that is right for you and stick to it. #KeepItSimple#FindBalance#ycsdchat
A3: I think there is a mindset to keep goals simple in order to make them more achievable and easily able to be revised. The more complex a goal, the harder it is to manage and keep track of. #ycsdchat
A3: I think of the “less” as my interim goals. What can I do now? What has the greates impact? Then the small actions lead to greater outcomes over time #ycsdchat
A3: I think part of making a true SMART goal is to focus on the attainability. We need to "keep it simple" so that we can keep the momentum going by celebrating the small successes. #ycsdchat
A2: You have to take the knowledge forward in order to reflect! Thoughts to self...Was it attainable at the time? How can you take better action to achieve it the next time around? #ycsdchat
A3-Break bigger or the more grandiose goals into smaller steps and always remember to celebrate the small successes along the way-if the big goal doesn't happen-can look back on all the progress and decide how to move forward #ycsdchat
A3: Breaking it down into smaller, simpler steps helps you feel capable of accomplishing your goal. You still have the big picture in mind, but you're stopping to focus on the details that make it a masterpiece. #ycsdchat
A3: I don’t think simplicity is the problem, I think it’s attainabity. A person can set very complex goals, such as wanting to learn a language or become a neurosurgeon, but she has to set smaller, attainable checkpoints to reach such a goal. #ycsdchat
A3 #ycsdchat Actually, keeping it simple works best in a full classroom. I set my goals for my lessons simple with open ended products so my students can all be successful with a simple project or an elaborate masterpiece. Both are beautiful
A2: When I don't follow through on a goal, I feel pretty upset at myself at first, but then I try to revise it to make it more attainable or readjust my self-expectations. And then keep on going! #ycsdchat
A3 if you you can’t restate your goal when asked that is problem. Simple is fundamental to accomplishing your goal and building on other goals in the future. #ycsdchat
A3. Change is hard for everyone, even when you want it badly. Just focusing on one aspect of life/work sets you up for a better chance at success. #ycsdchat
I am torn with this one. On one hand, if you keep your goal simple and achievable, you can feel more successful, however, if you don’t challenge yourself you may not know your full potential to achieve a more difficult goal. #ycsdchat
A3: I, personally, have a notoriously TERRIBLE memory. If it's not simple, I'm going to forget it. If you can't remember a goal, you'll never reach it! #ycsdchat
A3- all I can think about are SMART goals. Goals should be specific, measurable, attainable realistic and timely. All are important to see/measure gains and stay motivated. #ycsdchat
I agree but also think important to develop stretch or growth goals that become attainable over time often through collaboration and persistence so we don't become status quo #ycsdchat
Deb Ellis, AP Grafton Bethel
A3:. Great question. There are always so many important and urgent demands on our time. It's so important, but hard to keep one or a few goals on top. #ycsdchat
A3: We are our own worst critics. Personally, I’m extremely hard on myself. I need to work on giving myself a pat on the back for the little things because they matter too. Without them, I can’t do the big things! It’s ok to try again! #growthmindset#ycsdchat
A3: I find it works best for me to keep my goals laser focused. Daily goals for home and school with larger umbrella goals for a certain time frame which could be a school year goal. :). #YCSDchat
A4: Reward...not the tangible type of reward, but the feeling you get when you do accomplish a set goal. My colleagues can help me by asking about how things are going. #ycsdchat
A4: My one word for the year is "LEAD" @ODUMonarchLEAD - reminding myself to be an example and have servitude at the forefront both at school and home. #ycsdchat
A4: YES Admin challenged us to find our One Word. I chose “change.” It’s open ended, but powerful.
Knowing what is in my power to change. I need to change daily to meet the needs of my kids. Change to make a difference, so that one day, my kids will be the CHANGE. #ycsdchat
A4: My one word this year is CHOICE because in all situations you have a choice in how you react, how you perceive it, and how it is going to impact you from that moment on. #ycsdchat
A4 #ycsdchat Inspire is my word. With family, friends, colleagues and students I strive to inspire. I would love to feel inspired more myself. I am inspired by art and keep current in my craft.
A4: Luckily, our principal @kdenny_ gave us time to think about this, so we're ready for this question! I selected "poise" this year... and I saw related words heavily repeated across the staff. Balance is clearly an important teacher need. #ycsdchat
My one word is "NOW". It's my goal and reminder to be aware of how I'm spending time. Computer vs. People; Discipline vs Celebration; Work vs Health& Family #ycsdchat
A4/A5 My one word is joy. This resonates with both my work and home life. Reminding me that joy comes from sharing passion, learning, teaching, building connections and just being your best self. I’m joyful and want to help others find and share their joy. #ycsdchat
a5: "Possibilities" keeps me open to new ideas, suggestions, activities, perceptions, etc, etc, This can only help me grow personally and professionally and help me help others - students, teachers, communities... #ycsdchat
A4: Okay, seriously, I think my one word is POSITiVITY! I have the best career and I am so happy in life. I am dodging negative energy and trying to uplift others. #YCSDchat
A5: Believing in the good, believing in others, and respecting the beliefs of other are all ways "believe" can be put into every aspect of life. Believing in something small is just as powerful as believing in something big. #ycsdchat
A5: "Rule number 4! Make smart choices!" I say this and have students repeat it every day. This year, it's time to LIVE it instead of just saying it. What does it mean for me to make smart choices in school and at home? #ycsdchat
Agreed! A positive attitude and growth mindset, focusing on the best in others, and avoiding getting caught up in complaining/negativity, brings so much more joy and passion to work and home! #YCSDChat
A4: Okay, seriously, I think my one word is POSITiVITY! I have the best career and I am so happy in life. I am dodging negative energy and trying to uplift others. #YCSDchat
A6: I believe my students will make great gains this year. I believe I can make a difference with them. I believe I can help them believe in themselves. #ycsdchat
A5: I believe that positivity helps in all aspects of everything. Looking at the glass half full so to speak can bring about so many opportunities. #ycsdchat
A6: Having one word could help students focus. Start the day reflecting on their word and how it impacts their choices and goals for the day. #ycsdchat
A6: My one word keeps me focused, which I hope makes me better at what I do and positively impacts my "students."
I wonder what our students would say if we asked them to come up with a word that would inspire them ?
#ycsdchat
A6: @MsInsley likes to talk about how classes sometimes take on the personality of their teacher... if a teacher is positive, balanced, focused, etc... then the class may be as well. Win/win. #ycsdchat
In the world of teaching, positivity can help one student overcome something they have never accomplished before because they felt they couldn’t. #ycsdchat
“Words are powerful. They have the power to inspire, encourage, appreciate, heal, and turn the impossible into the possible.” -John Gordon, Dan Britton, Jimmy Page #ycsdchat
A6: If your one word has increased YOUR progress and engagement then it will likely spill over into your students' progress and engagement as well! #ycsdchat
