Good evening and welcome to #pln365.
I am your moderator, James McMillan, HS Math T and aspiring admin.
Please introduce yourself. Include how you first found #pln365.
Paul from NJ here. I found #pln365 while reflecting on a way to intersect my passion for reflection and positivity. The concept came to me in April 2017 and the rest has been history.
#pln365 My vacation (to CA) was nice. Dodger game w fireworks, beach, the Getty, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert... Just to name a few fun things we did... Oh, and listened to Othello, Romeo and J, and Hatchet in the car.
A1 - Comes from heavy burden which makes a T feel like they have all this STUFF to do, and teaching... Then the mind-space needed for solving learning challenges feels wasted on managing the load. (But we can break through!) #pln365
See you in 15 minutes!
The #WholeChildChat book study continues TONIGHT at 6pm PST, 8pm CST, 9pm EST. Looking forward to discussing enriching student learning with a great group of educators. All are welcome! #edchat#pln365https://t.co/Au3mJ8anfg
A3: "What makes a child gifted and talented may not always be good grades in school, but a different way of looking at the world and learning."
-Sen. Chuck Grassley

A3: What is the view of a politician who actually kind of gets it about how children's minds work and how bass ackwards our definitions of gifted and talented are? #pln365
A2 What is progress vs. perfection?
Ss who never do work bc they get passed along suddenly does some... And then more...
We have to look at where Ss start and where they are now to see growth. #pln365

#pln365 Homework does not guarantee an A- engaging, interactive, collaborative lessons in a student-centered classroom is the best way to keep them motivated
A3 What is perception vs reality? Numbers can convey any message but Ss perceptions of themselves form their reality. What they hear repeatedly is what they believe. THINK before you speak. #pln365

#WholeChildChat begins in five minutes! All are welcome-- even if you haven't yet read the chapters for tonight's book study. We'll be discussing how to enrich student learning. #pln365#edchathttps://t.co/VXd8rwXinp
A5: “The research quite clearly shows that kids who are graded & have been encouraged to try to improve their grades – tend to lose interest in the learning itself, avoid challenging tasks whenever possible ... & think less deeply than kids who aren’t graded,” -Alfie Kohn #pln365

A4 What is a box of crayons? They may have similarities but each is unique, whether vastly or subtly. Life would be sad and boring if it was monochromatic. Celebrate the diversity that is our Ss. #pln365
A5: What is a key reason we should stop grading as we have traditionally done? What is a major obstacle in teaching Ss it's ok to make and learn from mistakes? #pln365
Q5 Not a question but a comment. This was me and my quest for a 4.0 all through high school. I never took typing because most students earned a C. As a result, I still type with only two fingers... #pln365

Thank you for being a part of #pln365 tonight. Remember to follow those around you and come back next week!
As the new school year closes in quickly, be mindful of WHY we do what we do and how it IMPACTS students.
Q5: What motivates systems to defy facts? Mistrust? Money? Fear? Laziness?
Would a deeper understanding of how we built the educational system possibly free us up to simply rewrite the system. Someone at some pt started from scratch. Why are we so different?
#pln365
Q5 What is intrinsic vs extrinsic reinforcement? Learning should be intrinsic and self motivational but we have to use numbers, we have to compare, we have to have all Ss achieve the same goals. Not everyone starts at the same place or even wants the same thing. #pln365

At some pt the reward isn't worth it. The real question is why aren't they motivated? Does that lie extrinsically (content) or intrinsically (learning challenges). #pln365
A5: We can fall victim to two utterly false assumptions: (1) Everything that matters can be counted and (2) Everything that can be counted matters. Lies like these are the termites of education; they stifle innovation and weaken relationships and rapport. #pln365
This is CRAZY!!!! We trended top 10 with the All-Star Game taking the top 3 spots! Way to go #pln365! Y'all rocked it tonight! Keep the conversation going and invite others to the group!
Content if they have never mastered the basics because Ts have to cover the curriculum
Learning challenges if they do not buy into learning
Learning challenges if they know they won't get left behind

I wish I didn’t have to give traditional grades. Unfortunately my district still requires them.
I want students to see that they are more than a grade on a paper, but they are responsible for learning the course standards/skills and can still not pass the course.
