CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good morning, #CatholicEdChat! This is my first time back since the spring. I hope that everyone had a good summer and start to the new school year. I am in my thirteenth year of teaching theology and Spanish at @BMHSMustangs.
Good Morning! I'm Michele, the proud principal of @StRoseChelsea in Chelsea, MA #RCABSchools This is my 6th year as principal here and my 19th year in as a Catholic educator #catholicedchat
We just finished out second week and I finally feel like the craziness may be slowing down. The first days have such an insane sense of urgency. #CatholicEdChat
Yes! Actually, I've found GoogleHangout to be much easier for everyone. I say "Skype" because that's a term most people know, but when I show them how GoogleHangout connects to their gmail, it's so much easier. #edtech#catholicedchat
Good morning! Adam, 5/6 social studies, Mayfield Heights, Ohio! Fighting my first cold of the school year during this long weekend...yay... #CatholicEdchat
Really good, thanks for asking! I'm at a new school & they (Ss mostly) seem to have embraced me.
Having some mgmt issues w/ those readers, but the kids aren't used to it yet. #ParForTheCourse#CatholicEdChat
We had our first week, though it was only four days. It was my first week EVER as a principal, not a teacher, so it felt really different. Good, but different. #catholicedchat
Classic! They always bring us their germs. My go-to drink for back to school includes some “EmergenC” packets. Extra shot of vitamin C and minerals. They seem to help. #CatholicEdChat
Good morning. Zee here from Pittsburgh, PA #CatholicEdChat Just finished my 22nd first week of school at St. Louise de Marillac Catholic! Technology Teacher k-8 and Exploratory Latin 7&8
We have a peace pole on campus and are right down the hill from the sisters of Mercy. Does anyone else do peace pole activities in September? #catholicedchat
#CatholicEdChat our Back to School Night is Tuesday. We call it Curriculum Night for the parents to meet the teachers and discuss the year. I wish we did it the first week of school.
On our opening PD day, my associate pastor opened up Q&A, my faculty brought it up and we were able to hash out how we would repsond to Ss and Ps. We also have reviewed our Safe Environment procedures #CatholicEdChat
Have you heard of 2x10? Spend 2 min/10 days talking with a S on whatever they want to talk about. Focus on those your struggling to connect to. I learned A LOT about hockey one year #catholicedchat
Hi all! Sorry, I'm late. I'm Melissa from Atchison, KS. I teach 6-8 Soc Studies/6 Rel/Dig Citi. It's been a a crazy few wks but I'm happy to finally check in with #CatholicEdChat again!
On our opening PD day, my associate pastor opened up Q&A, my faculty brought it up and we were able to hash out how we would repsond to Ss and Ps. We also have reviewed our Safe Environment procedures #CatholicEdChat
I was going to wait to share, but since @BarbInNebraska asked, I do have some good news for #CatholicEdChat. 🙂 If you are looking for a new prayer book to use in class, my new book will be released by @avemariapress in October (next month - time flies)! https://t.co/WPAyzZWn2T
Ha, my previous principal was a #Maureen, too!
What is the basic outline of that, I wonder? We use #LoveAndLogic in my school but still have a demerit system; it doesn't seem like those two things go together...
#CatholicEdChat
I know that the articles out there that focus on it sometimes make it seem like a cure-all. I'm not sure it is, but it went a long way in buiding up some shaky relationships #catholicedchat
This is awesome! Is anyone else participating in the 40 days of prayer and penance for #SackClothandAshes? Wondering if any might suggest this to older Ss, maybe in high school? #CatholicEdChat

#catholicEdChat Does anyone have any back to school traditions for welcoming new students and teachers? They receive a special blessing at our first all school Mass and receive a MIraculous Medal with a prayer card of our Patron Saint.
(1/2) The priests who celebrated Mass this past Sunday all talked about the crisis in their homilies. After Ss asked me ?s the following day about what the homily was about (w/ various degrees of knowledge about the abuse) #CatholicEdChat
We call them conduct referrals and we say that they are tools for communication rather than the actual consequence. If there is a discipline issue, we try to give a logical consequence - fix what was broken. Then, we communicate and keep track with the conduct referrals.
At mass the past two weeks at school, the priests have addressed it. Both priests addressed it in their homilies and explained that this is not how these priests should have acted and that the Catholic church needs to support each other and maintain their values #catholicedchat
(2/2) our pastor came in & talked to each middle school class about the crisis. Our principal, @DianeLiebsch followed up w an email to parents. I think @AtchisonSbcs did a great job of addressing the issues and making sure the Ss were heard #CatholicEdChat#sbcsheartsonfire

That's great that they went to the school! I am so happy to hear it addressed from the pulpit but being available for questions at school is so important. #CatholicEdchat
In reply to
@MrsSchramp, @jesswalte, @mocovington, @DianeLiebsch, @AtchisonSbcs
All our priests talked about it last weekend, too. This happened b/c I had emailed our pastor begging him to address the issue. He was wonderfully responsive and gave a great homily that the congregation really appreciated. #catholicedchat
This is so fantastic! Many kids know more than we think they do, and they certainly hear rumors. So good that your pastor and principal addressed the issue. They sound like great people! #CatholicEdChat

#CatholicEdChat, this is a very important piece from @caracatholic@Georgetown regarding key factors in the matter. To attempt an analogy, what we are seeing is more like aftershocks from the original earthquake, rather than a new earthquake, so to speak. https://t.co/ra3UkOSysV
I like this idea. I enjoy knowing what others like to do with their time, but I never thought about implementing this into my classroom. Did you hold a conversation with the whole class? #catholicedchat

I just had a discussion about this with another local Catholic Ed Tech Teacher. We also use @ISTE Standards and @CSforAllTchrs Interested in what you are working on @ MicheleCMueller #CatholicEdChat

My pastor and associate pastor teach religion in the intermediate and middle school grades on a regular basis. So grateful for their advocacy, especially as a new principal! #catholicedchat
I agree. We're blessed to have a pastor who was totally willing to talk to Ss about it. Some Ss were upset bc they thought that things were being kept from them, so it's I'm so glad my principal & pastor quickly worked to address those concerns #catholicedchat

Ts are integrating tech within projects, but who and when/how are the basics “how to” skills taught? Skills get missed w/o some kind of “tech” course & that’s where a “tech” curriculum is needed. I need to get solid footing for the new year before I begin. #CatholicEdChat
In reply to
@magistrazee, @BarbInNebraska, @debbiefuco, @iste, @CSforAllTchrs
Absolutely. We've had to do some damage control w/ squashing rumors being spread by Ss about the abuse scandal on social media, too, unfortunately :( #CatholicEdChat
In reply to
@jesswalte, @AJCattapan, @mocovington, @DianeLiebsch, @AtchisonSbcs
Most of HOW TO w/tech is introduced in "computer" classes, but key is to collaborate with teachers on projects. It is often difficult to find time to collaborate, but it is worth it to plan projects together. Communicating with Ts at beginning of year & suggest. #CatholicEdChat

@MicheleCMueller, @BarbInNebraska, @debbiefuco, @iste, @CSforAllTchrs
Because of space, our tech classes take place in the grades homeroom. It's a solution that's built in easier collaboration with tech and content #CatholicEdChat

@missbruggeman Happy to have you with us today, Emma!
I just finished my certification at @UNKearney last year, after working in another career field. If you need any assistance throughout the rest of your program, please let us know. :-)

1/2: #CatholicEdChat, I will meet my students for the first time on Tuesday. When the issue arises, it will serve as an opportunity to cover many points that need to be raised: the reality of evil/sin and its effects, what happens when a vocation is misinterpreted, chastity, etc.
2/2: Let us also take every opportunity as Catholic school educators to highlight the need for good and holy men to listen to God's call to discern the priesthood. Many men are being called, but the world's noisy distractions are drowning out the Lord's voice. #CatholicEdChat
Yes, collaborating to build strong projects is very important. My Mondays are open for these types of meetings. We are also going to put aside time during some half day and full day PD for this collaborating. #CatholicEdChat

On the way to Skagen, Denmark I met a third grade class on a field trip. I asked them to say hello to @BarbInNebraska Mrs. Gilman's class. I got their contact info so your class can Skype with their class! #CatholicEdChat Connecting 3rd Graders around world!
We also have 2 periods a week where the STREAM Lab is open for back to back periods for special projects or extra lab time or time to collaborate and learn. It is picking up momentum. #CatholicEdChat

I have an open schedule on Mondays which provides so much flexibility. Even a 20 minutes meeting with a T can result in the beginning of an idea. #CatholicEdChat

#catholicedchat I'm currently taking an "Instructional Technology" class at XU and I'm learning about technology in the classroom and the benefits because it allows students to learn in a different way. I do understand that after I take this class that more technology will (1/2)

#CatholicEdChat, we must also recall that most of us Catholic educators are members of the laity, and the face of the Church for many. So, it is more important than ever to take seriously our schools' Catholic identity, to foster healing, reconciliation, and the renewal of trust.
#catholicedchat be created and that I will have to keep up with the latest technology. After knowing of more technology I will then choose what technologies are the best for my students (2/2)

Thanks. I would contribute more today but am exhausted from the week. The Labor Day weekend is always a break well needed at the school year start! #catholicedchat
The woman in the photo is Herdis, and she is the librarian at the Danish school on the field trip. @BarbInNebraska#catholicedchat I'll send her info later to connect @Room113SMM to their class.
Good morning #catholicedchat Another Saturday run has kept me away from Twitter this morning. I look forward to catching up later on today! Happy Labor Day Weekend!
#CatholicEdChat, I am excited about teaching my students [a lot] more about the Church's saints, especially the younger ones. In these tumultuous times in both the Church and elsewhere, we have a rich opportunity to remind each other about true saints and their intercession.
Getting to know the people at my "new" school. I love the conversations I have with all ages, and the uniqueness of each child (and teacher). #catholicedchat
Excellent idea! Similar to the Love & Logic approach. They encourage you to consider your options then act on it at a later time, even tomorrow.
#CatholicEdChat
Also really excited about doing more author visits at Catholic schools this year! If you know a teacher who'd like me to do a Skype or Google Hangout virtual visit, let me know! I'm going to start booking dates this week. #CatholicEdChat#CatholicSchool
I bet Jennifer Serravallo, Penny Kittle, Lucy Calkins, and Donalyn Miller could each make at least 100K a year on Teachers Pay Teachers. I'm hoping that during the 2018-2019 school year teachers spend more time reading books by the names above, and less time on TPT.
Thank you @BarbInNebraska Hoping to participate in #CatholicEdChat more often this year! Happy Labor Day weekend to all and a blessed school year ahead!
Have a good Labor Day, #CatholicEdChat! Remember that we as Catholic educators do not "work"; rather, we cooperate with the Holy Spirit. Ideally, Jesus is the primary [uppercase T] Teacher in our classroom and throughout our school, and we are [lowercase t] teachers subsequently.
