first tweet chat! ready to rock and roll!!
Very cool. stuff! I'll be in the office too!
Happily working to move things forward. So much hope in KS. The teachers and leadership at state level. WOW.
A1: we need to be the voice for what Kansas kids need! No one knows them like us...
A1: Ts need to be vocal about what the issues are & what we need to fix them. We have the most info & need to get it out there
Honored to join you in that inspirational adventure.
A1: Ts need to speak out and let our voices be heard, not just stay behind our doors of the classroom
A1: Opportunity to hear challenges from the "troops on the front line"
I missed last weeks chat so I am happy to be back!
A1 Ts need to stand up and let our voices be heard. No one else knows what we do daily!
A1 I think it means teachers need to be leaders and advocate what is best for the education of our kids in Kansas
A1. To me it's sharing what is happening in our rooms so people get a realistic look at what is happening in education.
A1-Ts can't wait for others to speak for them. All Ts need to be informed and involved.
A1: Ts need to make what happens in classrooms visible to everyone. Our voices are best heard when we are positive & proactive.
Ks. Commissioner wants to hear from the experts in the field of education...the classroom Ts that touch lives EVERYDAY!
Awesome to have you join us! PSU is a great College of Ed program!
A1: I think first we need to share what we do, how we do it, and success we have. People outside ed don't know what T really do!
A1 - It means that instead of just complaining amongst ourselves, we need to go public with what we have to offer our students!
A1: we can no longer sit silent and assume people find us valuable. We must share all the great things happening
A1: We are with Ss everyday and need to speak for them!
A1: Must start controlling the narrative regarding education. We need to start telling our "story/brand" https://t.co/0D4gKjggS2
We need to control our narrative. We are in the weeds each day and care about our kids. Open the windows. https://t.co/rt1jwCKXbp
A1) Teachers are in the trenches, so they need to have a loud voice, leading charges of knowing what's right for kids. Ts leading
Our voices must be for the voices of all children
WOOT! Welcome to the conversation
To me, Ts are doing great things every day. We are just "dying of humble" and not sharing the positives we see and experience.
first step is being aware and staying on top of issues. A great way to let voice be heard is via social media.
Hey - Megan, HS AP in Eudora jumping in late!
We need to be LOUD enough for others to want to hear our voice!!
A1: We need to be talking about what's going on in our classrooms. The good things, the issues, the needs...all of it.
a1 Speaking constructively, articulating mission and vision boldly and publicly
A1: If teachers don't vocalize the problems and possible solutions, how can we be upset when no one does what we want?
yes! Many times all people hear is the negative because not enough positive is being spoken! https://t.co/OD9DhCCjxG
A1: Ts need to make what happens in classrooms visible to everyone. Our voices are best heard when we are positive & proactive.
We need to be fully invested in the future. The future of our students, our districts, our state.
JULIE!! Waving at ya! https://t.co/VVLMwVqSAC
Julie Samuels from PSU College of Education..excited to be a part of this conversation!
A1. They are the experts in this field and need their voices heard to do what is best for students.
Yes!! There are so many misconceptions about what is happening and usually leaning on the negative side
A1: Little to no context being out of state but intrigued. Our Governor says similar things while actively turning his back on edu😕
A1: That someone cares and wants to actually listen to us!
A1: "Teacher Voice" comes from making Ts feel comfortable sharing experiences, concerns, ideas, and find ways to overcome/use them
A1: showing what's happening in KS classrooms (all areas). We are the frontline!
A1: That we need to use our voices & knowledge to empower student learning & love for learning.
A1 - The Teacher voice is powerful! If we share our love for the prof & our desire to improve all KS Ss, we can create change
Admins need to get teachers out into the community 2 make connections and be heard
It is vital to communicate and we want to hear from Ts....voices matter!
Excited to hear great ideas from my first
A1 it means a heck of a lot when he backs up the statement by joining us in conversations like this! Change is happening!
Angie Messer, Manhattan High AP
A1: we should be the agents of change in Ed
Many, many Ts do not feel their voice is worthy of being shared. Scared to take step to tweet, blog. Must change that
A1 Admins need to get teachers out into the community 2 make connections and be heard
We must keep the conversation SOLUTION FOCUSED!
A1: Ts need to be vocal about strengths and needs of schools and not only be voice for Ts but for Ss
A1: I also think it means taking away neg. stigma that makes it look like Ts are whiners or complainers - we need help/change!
To make people outside Ed WANT to know more about what we do. Involve communities so more a touched by power of KS Education
Currently Ts are perceived by many as only complainers. We've not utilized all the channels positive communication -- yet!
There are some GREAT ideas flowing tonight!! And the crowd that turned out is AWESOME!!
I love “dying of humble” It’s so true!
A1: teacher voice can only happen when teachers view themselves as experts in their field. Society would have us think otherwise.
AMEN!! https://t.co/AGGvvlbxkI
A1 it means a heck of a lot when he backs up the statement by joining us in conversations like this! Change is happening!
What keeps teachers from sharing, communicating, networking? What can we do to promote that?
We are experts, and need 2 show that through professionalism & willingness to share knowledge w/ policymakers in positive manner.
I would agree! Love seeing him so active with educators in our state. https://t.co/ZocWT6R17t
A1 it means a heck of a lot when he backs up the statement by joining us in conversations like this! Change is happening!
Agreed - public misses out on so many of the GOOD things that happen in a classroom. https://t.co/GdKzXzrj8g
Many, many Ts do not feel their voice is worthy of being shared. Scared to take step to tweet, blog. Must change that
that's a change that happens in us though right? Where we don't feel like "whining" solves the problem, but hard work!
Who could NOT listen what are children have to say. It is sad that the state ignores their needs in the existing political battle
Excited to take part! I'm Ossa Fisher from
I'm curious what The Commish says about what he means. 😉
Which is normally the smaller percentage but they are sometimes the only ones speaking!
I like that you said comfortable. It has to be a trusting environment for honest sharing
A1-When it seems like our state is against us, let our voices be heard to paint the REAL picture of how great KS public edu is
A1: Inservices lately are abt giving Ss voice/choice, where is that for Ts? Why can't we trust adults to make resp. decisions?
A1 Teacher voice is only as strong as the empowerment that is there encouraging it.
A1: How many of us miss that opportunity to showcase the great things happening EVERYDAY? Tweet, blog, post, and Periscope it.
Empowering Ks Ts to share their opinions and honoring their experiences!
How do we promote a positive image outside of social media as well? https://t.co/V7OBSePjh0
What keeps teachers from sharing, communicating, networking? What can we do to promote that?
Yes! We are trained experts, and need to remember that others will look to us for answers if we offer solutions!
Could that start with the positive relationships we build with parents and community members?
We are teachers every day of our lives. But are we true advocates outside our four walls?
Yes, I shouldn't be scared to share struggles/concerns or feel like there will always be repercussions for what I say
Easy! By being active in our communities. https://t.co/jrMJhn6s4Q
How do we promote a positive image outside of social media as well? https://t.co/V7OBSePjh0
What keeps teachers from sharing, communicating, networking? What can we do to promote that?
A1-Ts need to connect with the community to work together to promote the great things occurring in their schools.
Contact the local media. Newspapers, TV, Radio. Do whatever it takes to share the good in our schools! https://t.co/eXQkMsU6Qp
How do we promote a positive image outside of social media as well? https://t.co/V7OBSePjh0
What keeps teachers from sharing, communicating, networking? What can we do to promote that?
We are the agents of change! We need to pick up the reins!
we have to build trust and confidence in colleagues. Be encouraging & model. https://t.co/kKaoJuQupw
What keeps teachers from sharing, communicating, networking? What can we do to promote that?
Cheney is planning a personal PD day in April. Ts can propose what they want to work on and it becomes individualized
Ts have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Randy Watson@KsCommissioner
We altered our PT conferences this year at the HS level. It was a positive opportunity to speak with parents.
Especially teachers sharing the good news from the classroom with their community via social media https://t.co/CxuddhRced
Empowering Ks Ts to share their opinions and honoring their experiences!
A1: Our Commissioner is getting in the field on a continuous basis to hear from Ts that are touching the Ss everyday.
Would love to hear more! has some new ideas for our HS spring one! https://t.co/fHiwVvazNT
We altered our PT conferences this year at the HS level. It was a positive opportunity to speak with parents.
My #1-Ts need to be part of a Prof Support/Lrng Network (like Twitter). Twitter + was my breakthru https://t.co/H21ceaJ6TX
A1: teacher voice can only happen when teachers view themselves as experts in their field. Society would have us think otherwise.
Great discussion on tonight! https://t.co/3weApu2woR
There are some GREAT ideas flowing tonight!! And the crowd that turned out is AWESOME!!
And easy to do once we show the Ts where to begin. Get connected, be inspired, & pass on the inspiration https://t.co/Hj5rX3uYRL
A1: How many of us miss that opportunity to showcase the great things happening EVERYDAY? Tweet, blog, post, and Periscope it.
Welcome to We are glad you are here!
SO TRUE! We need to let our voices be heard and share with our stakeholders the excellent things we r doing!
Connecting w parents on social media allows us to share the positive message and realities of school.
I agree; we need to invite people in, and take our kids out to showcase all of the great things happening.
A district hashtag so powerful! Amazing what good you see across district Energy/enthusiasm contagious!
A2: Social media of course! Speak loudly and often, share what's going on in your classroom & what your class lacks
Taking down the walls, sharing the amazing things going on!
Love that! We need more of this in a place where admin can help use tackle logistics or consultants can give guidance
Getting EVERYONE involved. From teachers to secretaries to custodians. The whole district!
I love this idea! What better way than positive relationships with the families we serve
Genius! Teacher Leader super friends start with an idea and then inspire others!
A2. I would like to get more media involved so we can reach a wide variety of people and how they connect.
A2: social media and but also a visual presence in the community
Q2 Connect w community f2f first. And then daily on all levels of FB.
A2) Blogging, sharing stories, websites, social media, teachers partnering with community to get them involved in classrooms
A2: we need to educate all Ts and staff the power of social media and how it connects our voices
A2 - Invite people in to our schools to see the amazing happenings in the classroom - and out of the classroom.
A2 Social media and blogs, but also some 'old school' techniques such as newspaper editorials and community functions
right! without a personal cnxn, the social media is likely to flounder after a while. Need to keep a human touch.
A2: without naysaying too much, can we ever assure that all teachers are heard? What about those who are silent? PLN Darwinism?
A2: Make sure to share withmore than education people; sometimes teachers stick with our tribe & forget about other stakeholders
A2: More opportunities to meet with our state reps to hear the positive & proactive ideas from Ts.
A2: A venue that you will utilize. I don't think there is a one-size fits all. But be open and invite other Ts along with you.
A2: Social media, local newspaper, community involvement/presence, sharing the great learning taking place in our schools..
A2: Social media is great, but it's important to go beyond that. Service learning & f2f interaction is imperative to reach all!
A2 I believe this starts at the local level with building leaders and it builds from there county, state & national levels
A2: I thinking making Ts feel like what they have to say is valued/important. It's "easy" to be quiet.
Q2: Social media is a great, but only hits those who are connected. Would love to see a league PD conference on common PD days.
A2 Our Ss can work to create real solutions to real problems in the community. We want to help; not just hand out.
Agreed! I love using seesaw and class dojo to share activities and pics w/ parents. https://t.co/ihTO2CWkID
Connecting w parents on social media allows us to share the positive message and realities of school.
A2 Connecting at school with Ts, then Ps, and community members
Give Ts voice first where they are safe for ex. in PLC's in grade level teams. Then expanding from their as they gain confidence!
A2: We are using in addition to social media to promote parent engagement and communication.
A2: social media is an excellent start. Include hashtags in the district as well as outside sources to spread the word!
Coming in late but I'm here! Cory Strathman, SMSD Principal
A2: online wherever the school community is found, and then also in personal relationships outside of school.
a2: Testimonials, blogs and stories of success are incredibly powerful. Virality happens on
A2. Social Media and definitely conferences such as Podstock, MACE-Ks, KEEN, and KSDE
I have seen the community wants to take part. Provide them opportunities to get involved and they help share the positive stories
we put so many big activities from our school in our local paper!
A2: I enjoy getting to discuss w/admin at edcamps like - takes the pressure off and allows for honest and open discourse
and are racing for fastest twitter chat in my !
A2 Would love to see districts doing more pd and political activism days together, going to capital (i.e. Road Trip 2 T-town)
Each grade level in our school has "adopted" a local business. We plan to invite them in, learn from them.
A2 Social media to the local papers work in our area. Share out the positives and successes.
And seek out educators who disagree w you. Not to argue, but to learn from each other. We play too nice https://t.co/8pcgakDQF1
A2: Make sure to share withmore than education people; sometimes teachers stick with our tribe & forget about other stakeholders
I believe that students if given the facts of what it takes in resources to sustain a quality educational could articulate needs
True! We need to share with all, and not assume others understand what we do. https://t.co/hvpjpg4YGZ
A2: Make sure to share withmore than education people; sometimes teachers stick with our tribe & forget about other stakeholders
district/school # that connects to our brand/vision with Twitter, FB posts, videochats. Be intentional. https://t.co/daW5DvzgWe
A2 Need a variety of ways as not every Ts uses social media. F2f options, community gatherings, newspapers, and more.
It is also important to clarify misconceptions....social media is a great way to share info.
Well said amazing ! Share your voice with your PLN and your community! https://t.co/Go3asJHvKL
A2) Blogging, sharing stories, websites, social media, teachers partnering with community to get them involved in classrooms
My dream...if I ran the world! Especially since I am the only third teacher in my district!
A2:2 I am HUGE on the power of Twitter for using ur voice & getting ideas to makethat voice stronger Great way 2 know others getit
Going to them is a great way to start. Community members have busy lives too.
Not every1 likes to "fight the fight" but invite them into our element, u can't deny amazing things u see https://t.co/XGSlU36ceK
A2 - Invite people in to our schools to see the amazing happenings in the classroom - and out of the classroom.
A2: Not every amazing T is on social media yet. I think like all things you have to have a good mix on f2f, social media, etc.
I struggle with building rel'ps! Darn introverted nature of mine!
A2: I was just going to say has the easiest way to comm. with Ps. And it comes from the Ss.
Completely agree Traci! We’re on the job with hopes to get even more KS Ts connected this year https://t.co/a2msrrMxr6
A2: we need to educate all Ts and staff the power of social media and how it connects our voices
A2: Our wrestling team uses Periscope. I'm thinking we should use it in the classroom.
we made a district-wide hashtag at our last inservice
Welcome! Excellent PLN happening!
A2: There are so many, Ts need to find whats comfortable for them: conferences, social media etc
I feel the pain! Amazing how much easier for me to talk to people f2f after connecting with them here!
A2: Teachers also need to be informed about current legislation and be able to articulate the pros and cons when taking about them
Blogging is GREAT way to share Tvoice and talk shop. Launching a school blog tomo. Will invite Ts to write and be published!
And we wonder why they're talking bad about us without us. Proximity works.
I agree!!! https://t.co/PZ0W2eWFpj
A district hashtag so powerful! Amazing what good you see across district Energy/enthusiasm contagious!
A2: it will be important for some to start within their comfort zone(newsletter) and then encourage to take additional steps
Such a great point Cassie!
Even having students write guest columns in local papers to share their love of learning would be genius! https://t.co/tAAbO4XFv9
A2 Social media and blogs, but also some 'old school' techniques such as newspaper editorials and community functions
We need to brag more about the things we are doing!
That is fantastic! was talking about this last week! https://t.co/bvrtxf3iz8
A2: I was just going to say has the easiest way to comm. with Ps. And it comes from the Ss.
WOOT! Go 1st Grade geniuses! Spread the love and the inspiration
A2-We need to share our story anywhere and everywhere we can. Get community and business in our buildings as much as possible.
Periscope is insanely cool...what you share with it from your class? https://t.co/BZJiue7W7O
A2: Our wrestling team uses Periscope. I'm thinking we should use it in the classroom.
Boom! https://t.co/H1gaBcQihI
A2: Make sure to share withmore than education people; sometimes teachers stick with our tribe & forget about other stakeholders
Excited to be apart of this great conversation and ideas!
Sometimes we don't even communicate and share with other Ts in our own district! Prioritize time for that!
And this is why I adore this woman! https://t.co/oDVMljCbO0
A2 Our Ss can work to create real solutions to real problems in the community. We want to help; not just hand out.
I find the districts who have the most trouble w negativity online are also the ones who lock-down, block-down connections.
Face-to-face interactions build relationships and raise awareness. Church, grocery store, parks and Rec, swimming pool (yikes...)
A2: Just communicating! Using whatever way (social media, newsletter, etc) works best! Key-Communicate-Share,
So true! It can be the spark that ignites education passion to new levels! https://t.co/E12UDBOi2J
A2: we need to educate all Ts and staff the power of social media and how it connects our voices
A2 best venue: I could do a better job connecting with business leaders to help promote what my students are learning and doing
We need to get more of my Ts and your Ts on here, including your Admin :)
Not my strong suit! has a google doc and a for dummies convos that I can follow https://t.co/PY3vH6WOUB
A2: Teachers also need to be informed about current legislation and be able to articulate the pros and cons when taking about them
Love the idea of common PD days.Imagine the level of sharing when you are hearing Ts in other districts
We need to speak up/share/talk. Comes down to access to info & understanding of it. Can't let that stop us https://t.co/xyoMWn54MM
A2: Teachers also need to be informed about current legislation and be able to articulate the pros and cons when taking about them
We also need to show Ts that it really doesn't take much time to connect. https://t.co/2gvXEOjeSI
A2: we need to educate all Ts and staff the power of social media and how it connects our voices
Also, retweets share great posts. "Liking" it saves it for yourself. If it was good to like, then why not share w others?
We need to make connections w/ community when it's positive. They won't come to us for answers if all interactions are neg.
you're right. I'm not so sure we're as "up-to-date" as we should be on issues
Exactly! https://t.co/zbczjaPQJU
Love the idea of common PD days.Imagine the level of sharing when you are hearing Ts in other districts
We have several admins who are great with using Periscope on a regular basis. I need to get in that habit. Great tool.
Honestly-best app I use in . Endless possibilities! Thanks again for sharing!
us Ts need to find our voice if we're ever to inspire our Ss to find theirs!
Oh, I really like this idea! Common PD between districts to collaborate and grow?! Bring it on! https://t.co/7jW5vMTHVo
Love the idea of common PD days.Imagine the level of sharing when you are hearing Ts in other districts
Well said, you need to help some get their feet wet so they grow with confidence & embrace connections https://t.co/vlOhud543p
A2: it will be important for some to start within their comfort zone(newsletter) and then encourage to take additional steps
Are voices have been an effective mode of communication enough to kill a few House and Senate Bills
A3: Parent education; esp inner-city or young parents or low socio-economic parents may not know what pre-K edu should look like
Especially in rural areas where the businesses rely on local graduates for hire https://t.co/dpV8daol36
A2 best venue: I could do a better job connecting with business leaders to help promote what my students are learning and doing
Where do you go to find quick, easy access to current legislation? Or places where others are discussing pros/cons?
Imagine if we add Ts and Ps and community to stu problem solving teams...! We can create world we want! https://t.co/GItOCnFJ7A
A2 Our Ss can work to create real solutions to real problems in the community. We want to help; not just hand out.
You two inspire me every time I get one twitter! Ya'll rock!
A3: Doesn't some of it start in the home? Parents should recognize their part in their learner's life!
our district has started using Voxer to discuss our own redesign of our district. Conversation has been very beneficial.
PD is so important, wouldn't have taken part in chats if not for it
: The more connected we are the better. Growing Twitter List of KS educators that YOU will be added to: https://t.co/aBTmWBZ0GX
I love this!! I would love to know more!
Q3: Conducting a needs assessment to determine what early childhood programs are available in our communities across the state!
Are they sharing how to do this at their Elem and Second Principal Assoc. gatherings? It would be great! https://t.co/0BxL1tvJLz
We have several admins who are great with using Periscope on a regular basis. I need to get in that habit. Great tool.
A3: find the barriers and work to remove them. We have decreased paperwork and offered care7:30-6:00. https://t.co/KvRAeISlIo
It starts w equity of access to preschool programs. Some will enter kindergarten w ability to code while others don't know ABCs
A3:have pk screenings, we had open houses to educate families about k expectations
I love politics personally, but when I'm perceived to choose sides, I lose at least 50% of my audience.
Completely agree! Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen https://t.co/YI97tAEfXw
A3: Doesn't some of it start in the home? Parents should recognize their part in their learner's life!
they come and be a third grader for the day! Parents/community members, etc.
A3 I'm not sure there is a clear answer, helping schools connect with parents before students are school age can help 1/2
A3)PreK ed is not my wheelhouse, but I would think parent ed. Work wi daycares, hospitals, to educate all Ps on early childhood ed
A3: Free and affordable options; parents may want to educate their toddlers but lack the resources to make it happen
A2 (cont.) u can follow for legislation news related to teachers
Q3: Some communities have no access to early childhood resources...starting with early childhood Ts!
A3: we are working on personalized learning plans to meet students where they are in learning.
We did schedule. This was our 1st of it. Has been a good experience.
A3: I'm not familiar with what exactly they're trying to increase, but I hope it's in social/emotional learning and play time
a3, how to empower young Ps (esp. single P) to be the primary educators of their children? Tough! Esp if they struggle in school
A3) Reach out to the community, see what they need. Value everyone, schools, churches, home day cares. Show they are all important
A3 Community! Providing oppty for parents to learn, in order to help their children learn
A3: as a parent of a 2 & 3 yo transportation for preschool is big. Mine won't go cause we can't get them from daycare to preschool
A3 2/2 I think building strong community ties is vital to help those relationships happen & get families prepped
A3: educate parents early, offer pre-k for all children.
Marketing our schools and mission isn't just about RTs and live chats. How we frame our messages matters.
A3. Opps for PreK exploration days or even mini day camps to excite little ones to learning
Q3: Kindergarten Readiness is such an important issue...we can not leave it to chance!
Genius! https://t.co/9YuusLDyrn
A3. Opps for PreK exploration days or even mini day camps to excite little ones to learning
A3: We need to have conversations with parents because they are the front-line. Provide them opps. Meet their needs.
A3: clear guidelines as to what is K readiness? What if they are not ready? programs to get them there, funding
If is an issue in your area and you've not yet had Rebecca Lewis come visit, connect with her now!
A3 dedication to the goal. can't just talk. We have to realign where we spend our money. Some mentalities will have to change
yes - we also provide transportation. Removing barriers! What have we missed?
Pre-K programs must involve letting kids play, explore, investigate, role-play. This is how kids learn and grow curiosity, wonder.
I hope so too. I have reservations about preschool cause I want my kids to be able to play for fun as long as possible
A3: We need to make a conscious effort to reach out to the local daycares as well
A3: Equity in access to quality pre-k programs and Ts. I feel that pre-K should be free and available to all like kinder is.
A3 Every home is providing what they know how to do with their resources. Must meet families were they are
A3 cont - Also starting more Teacher Prep CTE lines in High Schools where Teens Co-op in PreK programs at no cost to PreK
Rebecca is amazing; she changed the way I look at myself & my Ss! A must for all educators. https://t.co/88TagsFkXC
If is an issue in your area and you've not yet had Rebecca Lewis come visit, connect with her now!
A3: Increase the perceived "value" of education for PreK students - set them up for success!
A3: this is tough especially in low income areas where parents often have had negative experiences w/ school
A3: access for all Ps to get their child free public preK. Transportation included! Parenting help all right after birth!
Easy answer would B to say it starts @ home We need 2 provide PreK in education 2 help parents out, a TRUE partnership. NO EXCUSE
. us Ts need to find our voice if we're ever to inspire our Ss to find theirs!
. RT BroCstart: us Ts need to find our voice if we're ever to inspire our Ss to find theirs!
true! The foundation to a strong meaningful education must start young or the house isnever properly built https://t.co/Mruf0H1md9
Q3: Some communities have no access to early childhood resources...starting with early childhood Ts!
It's always about the framing, the lens....and it must focus on the heart. 💖
A3. Parenting classes would be a great resource because many new parents don't know what they should be doing
Universal free presch. would be awesome. But how to implement w/o alienating the preschools already operating? And pay for it.
And this is why I like you. We can only do this if high-stakes testing is off the plate.
Removing all barriers for Ss is key!
a3: children are born to learn, and they love doing so. In the early years, play = learning and learning = play, if done right.
I highly second this idea. Rebecca’s story is powerful and brings needed perspective to our schools https://t.co/BgRTzHJXBH
If is an issue in your area and you've not yet had Rebecca Lewis come visit, connect with her now!
a3: Prek ed in Ness is AMAZING! and are DOING IT RIGHT for my little one!
Yes! I couldn’t agree more! We pay $1000 a month for quality preschool for my youngest…many Ps can’t afford that
A3; we have to engage Ps and celebrate early literacy exposure, encourage lots of verbal interaction, teach about quality activities
Even parents who are educated and thought they knew what they were doing before the kid got here! https://t.co/xOWvikwJTX
A3. Parenting classes would be a great resource because many new parents don't know what they should be doing
or they may be highly educated and opt-out of school structures entirely.
and to be honest, it’s a stretch for us, but it’s a priority so we make it work
A3: PK needs common standards like in KCCSS. We also need places Ps can send children to PK for $$ similar to K! More Pubic PK!
A3 cont My love of teaching began in HS as a Co-op CTE student in Head Starts. Cemented my desire to teach
WOW! It is amazing how much has grown!! You are all !!
Almost like continuing education for parents in many stages of child development.
Preach it! I agree wholeheartedly. Must foster Growth mindset and wonder!! https://t.co/zVLglQt8wr
a3: children are born to learn, and they love doing so. In the early years, play = learning and learning = play, if done right.
A3 I think many times the children who need the help the most have don't know what is available
do most counties in KS have Dolly Partons Imagination Library available? A free and awesome resource for all families.
Porch visits to homes that need support. Take the resources to them in case they can't come to us.
I think also we really need to consider funding for all day Kinder for all Ss!
I wish we could look at all the Ss as individuals. If kids are ready to advance, let them.
Wow! Our most costly private Ed is that amount per yr. That could be a definite obstacle for many parents https://t.co/XVBXv9cfff
Yes! I couldn’t agree more! We pay $1000 a month for quality preschool for my youngest…many Ps can’t afford that
Personal exp w/ Montessori & my own children - they learned thru play - now future engineer and scientist https://t.co/2RvgvjG0Vj
Pre-K programs must involve letting kids play, explore, investigate, role-play. This is how kids learn and grow curiosity, wonder.
I have teens & could still use continuing education! Teaching parents is my dream job!
JESSICA BROWN! Hello. :) Will I see you at in June?
Don't care about alienating if it's the right thing to do for our kiddos! ? https://t.co/NLveoAhuq6
Universal free presch. would be awesome. But how to implement w/o alienating the preschools already operating? And pay for it.
I was just thinking the same thing. Much thanks to you, as well Mr. Vesco!
At K roundup we use our screener to identify incoming K students who need a boost and offer jump start summer programming
that's a huge thank you to you and and everyone else.
I have never heard of it.... very interested https://t.co/kA1IVzkAIB
do most counties in KS have Dolly Partons Imagination Library available? A free and awesome resource for all families.
This is a powerful resource to our KS communities. Highly recommend https://t.co/5uzftHEpD2 https://t.co/PzQc1uGiJp
do most counties in KS have Dolly Partons Imagination Library available? A free and awesome resource for all families.
I wish so badly that we could offer free pre-k for our kids. They need it! Some kiddos come to K with few tools in their pockets
I have never heard of that organization
A3b: A large problem, as a K teacher, is too much reliance on Google for answers in the home.Genuine literacy skills are lacking.
A4: Great idea but needs to be flexible; don't want to hem kids into career they wanted at 12 if they change their mind
a4 on the idea level, love it.
on the practical, demands a radical reworking of trad'l school structure.
Bring it!
A4 Is the purpose of the plan to have a goal with stepping stones?
A4: We are so excited about our Ss' IPSs! hard at work w/our kiddos!
A4: I like it! Get Ss talking abt where they're at, where they're wanting to head, what it will take to get there, etc.
True! I am blessed to live in a district who does fund it, but I know many can't. https://t.co/wZKuITsIY6
I think also we really need to consider funding for all day Kinder for all Ss!
IPS allow for more informed choices, goal setting.. Flexibility as Ss grow is important as well. https://t.co/hmXCNkKxKe
Q4: I heard the Ks Commissioner describe IPS this week as a PROCESS...not filling out a piece of paper! Agree!
A4: Ind plans sound great and needed, but how to make it work, need $ and people. Seems like paperwork
If we're truly working w/ stu learners in mind, we move them where they need to be whenever they're ready https://t.co/tGKov2n0XK
I wish we could look at all the Ss as individuals. If kids are ready to advance, let them.
Whole heartedly agree with all of this! IF we are going to demand so much in K we need to provide the ladder!
Our dist. just did conf. w/ plans of study. It rocked! My S now knows what she needs to do to progress. https://t.co/78ePeSZHWW
A4) Keep it flexible and keep it student centered. It's not about what we want, but valuing what the child is truly interested in
A4: As a parent I love the idea, as a teacher I hope other parents see the value of it.
A4 - In my virtual school, we have just begun Individual Learning Plans, but they have a ways to go to be fully successful
Nope not to harsh we must advocate for students needs
A4)Premise is great-personalize education to meet students' needs. Logistically makes me nervous @ the HS level. Who manages them?
A4: most schools do this to some degree. We do some of these students starting the 9th grade. We plan to go to the 6th grade
As a , I love it. However the paperwork has got to stay a simplified to not lose the mission in the shuffle.
A4: V important to help motivate kids and teach them to set goals; helps make their learning more meaningful to them
A4 If education is to inspire children, must be individually focused- value the child and their passion/desire/wants
Our dist. is very flexible; ask what they might want to do and make some suggestions, also talk about volunteering.
Hard to keep up tonight! What an exciting amount of people on . Need someone to summarize the answers from ea ?? to help me out. :)
Q4: Schools will have to be creative in scheduling to allow for students to have quality IPS time for the process to work!
What are they using for the indiv stu plans? Starting at what grade level? AWESOME! https://t.co/Y4f6h9Zc1d
Our dist. just did conf. w/ plans of study. It rocked! My S now knows what she needs to do to progress. https://t.co/78ePeSZHWW
A4: As long as we don't lock them in, I'm for it. But it will take willingness to problem solve and not go for least resistance.
A4. Treating Ss as individuals, amazing! Not all Ss fit into the box many try to fit them in according to where they "should" be.
A4 great idea if done with fidelity. I believe it needs to start in Kindergarten if you truly want to see kids grow
You've heard that if kids can Google an answer, then we might want to rethink the questions?
A4 Just jumping in! Have mixed feelings of IPS - good to expose Ss but don't want to pen them in
A4 I ❤️ the idea helps Ss learn more about themselves what they do or do not enjoy & puts the power of learning in their hands
Exactly. Battles! If you can not socialize and be accepted by peers… your academics do not come first to you!
IPS sounds a little overwhelming right now....
A4 as a sped teacher that is what I do, reg ed would need a stream lined process with T who know the S
We can use it as a framework to point Ss in the right direction. If they decide to change direction, we can help with that!
A4 YES! It's about time we ask kids to be part of the solution! I'm starting to feel a real shift in education.
It's one thing to "have" an individual plan of study. It's another to monitor, evaluate, adjust, grow, etc https://t.co/yqozx9zXI5
A4)Premise is great-personalize education to meet students' needs. Logistically makes me nervous @ the HS level. Who manages them?
Looking at implementing Flex-Mod scheduling next yr as we head to breaking the trad schooling. Thanks to for the idea.
A Google Doc that will follow them, starting at 6th grade. We loved it as Ps!
Can't imagine a world with only halfday with the demands placed on our LOs already in first grade!
Yes, true words there. But sometimes simple ‘google’-able questions have to be asked. Double edged sword!
A4: At risk of sounding cynical, how much more work will IPS add for Ts to do? I am sure Ts will ask this. Some are overwhelmed
Great point. Careful with labels and tracks early on. Must be open-minded until graduation https://t.co/zWNizfZx0y
A4: As long as we don't lock them in, I'm for it. But it will take willingness to problem solve and not go for least resistance.
Here this from our awesome speds https://t.co/8TpLOsoqzM
A4 as a sped teacher that is what I do, reg ed would need a stream lined process with T who know the S
An ILP allows us to really look at Ss as humans... IF we choose to use it that way. Otherwise, it's just a hoop jump, checklist.
A4 I think if Ss had individual learning plans that they help create along with their Ps and Ts would b motivation for many
a4: personalized learning paths should be ever-present-- not just introduced in the "middle grades" -- but exist throughout life
Agreed. To do this right, other things must be dropped. Only so many hours in a work week.
I agree IPS is a PROCESS that begins in primary grades and ends when a secondary graduate completes post two years in career path
A4 Good tool to get kids to be reflective learners
A4 HS Ss could be such an awesome resource for our younger students. Would love to lead something like that. I better get busy.
Ts will need more training in order to let Ss know what their options are as they explore careers; it's hard to know everything.
signing up after and . Just got the OK to go to today!
A4 As a parent of 2 boys, this idea excites me! Individual plan of success...love the possibilities.
I believe, someone correct me if I'm wrong there are programs to be bought(?) to help with the individualized study plan
A4: Fine, w/flexibility. So much can change. Teaching in a district where kids come and go, I assume plan would follow them?
A4)It's almost as if in order for it to be done right, you need a staff member dedicated to IPS. Esp. when Ss have 7+ Ts a day.
"Dates of manufacture" is not how we should be classifying kids. They are not Herfords. https://t.co/MQhAWqqLa4
You mean age shouldn't determine the masses for when kids are ready for school???
Good Q. As teacher leader, we must voice our thoughts, ideas, concerns...so we can prob-solve! https://t.co/97OTcdtsYi
A4: At risk of sounding cynical, how much more work will IPS add for Ts to do? I am sure Ts will ask this. Some are overwhelmed
It needs to start . So may resources are not utilized bc they aren't known. Birth-3 is a great start & FREE!
A4: if it shifts the focus from standardization/uniformity to personalization/passion driven education it could be exciting
A4: I used the C. Tomlinson book on Differentiation with Mixed Ability in the classroom - All Ss deserve individual opp to learn.
a statewide plan would be nice so it could follow them! https://t.co/Ft1BJDUXIC
A4: Fine, w/flexibility. So much can change. Teaching in a district where kids come and go, I assume plan would follow them?
Counselors will heavily be involved & programs to help guide the students choices https://t.co/LipnTRiLRO
A4: At risk of sounding cynical, how much more work will IPS add for Ts to do? I am sure Ts will ask this. Some are overwhelmed
I agree, but Ts are also the best to guide Pts and Ss toward resources when we don't know.
I want to say my district is using career cruising
A4 flexibility would be key, at 6th grade wasn't planning on being a sped teacher
absolutely. It's about conversation and adjustments. It takes time, not an assembly-line
A4: If individual plan of study=Ss working at own pace/paths 2 meet a common goal, then it needs 2 start in K or PK matter of fact
There would definitely have to be consistency so it can travel with them.
there are! Southwest Plains has been working on the development of an IPS for about a year
A4-IPS are a great way to open our Ss minds to the options that are available to them and that they are interested in.
yep. It has to be rethought, and redone in a different environment. Factory schools will do it wrong every day.
Indiv plan study (w/Ps, Ss, Ts involved) coupled w/social-emotional learning data (not just testing data!) =WOW!
A4: Jumping in late here! We did IPS conf. for the first time this semester. A fantastic experience! https://t.co/gSSbZ10Lom
I agree; just have to make sure all Ts are depending on each other- refer Ss to other Ts as needed.
Never done s-led conferences but sounds like something that would fit in well with individualized plans. https://t.co/PHQwC0cUSt
to make IPS work, grad requirements must change to match Ss needs
Small schools and small districts will be the winners in the future. Factory schools have got to end.
A5: Be a model of loving empathy for your students...for some, you may be the only positive model of emotional maturity they have
Q5: The state of Ks. has SECD (Social Emotional Character Development) Standards that each school should be implemented.
A5. There should be time for soft skills when needed. School should be a safe place for guidance when going through new emotions
A5 I think we used to do social and emotional well-being better when Ss could grow those skills through play in the classroom
A5: character ed wrapped in the whole day, teach the Maslov before the blooms, love those babies
Q5: Just as we want Ts to have a voice we must allow Ss to have a voice.
Train Ts, treat Ss like the people they are, & provide more counselors to deal w/ severe issues! https://t.co/aolLQ4pxzN
A4 doesn't have to be more work! Ss future is what this is all about, our jobs are all about! keep it efficient, top priority
Developing learning plans will change how school is played. Start small and build.
Since Ts can see living plan and it is worked in freq'ly, Ts can act as counselors w/kids as well! https://t.co/yy9aP1VxwU
Counselors will heavily be involved & programs to help guide the students choices https://t.co/LipnTRiLRO
A4: At risk of sounding cynical, how much more work will IPS add for Ts to do? I am sure Ts will ask this. Some are overwhelmed
A5: 1 step I am passionate about is teaching social and emotional skill curriculum and how to be aware of pos/neg thought/actions.
A4 Any word on if we'll get $ assistance with Career Cruising?
We did student led confs 2x a year w 2 other conference meetings that were more informal. Always 100% particip
Q5: The Ss we are serving today needs the content behind the SECD Standards.
A5: Prevention programs are important for T1 Ss: education on social/emotional health. More mental health support for T2 & 3 Ss.
A5. Start w/ professional learning that puts humanity back into the prime focus over data.
A5) Embed ways kids can learn soft-skills with the curriculum. They are as important as academics. Don't expect kids to just know
A5: Another is by modeling EMPATHY to our students through our actions.
A5: Teach kindness, positivity, & optimism by loving kids & avoiding complaining. try to be real with them and admit failure
A5: Find time to teach/encourage soft skills in ALL areas! Ss NEED these skills badly!
A5 Not an easy fix but PD for district Ss needs is one place to start. Creating a safe positive environment in schools is another
A5: Need Ps more comfortable/preventive in sharing details affecting school - change in living arrangements, custody battles, etc.
A5: make personal connections with the students. Find a way to empower Ss and model the same expectations.
A5: Time has to be provided for Ss and Ts to work on soft skills and yes this means more unstructured time(recess) !
A5 Ss can't learn if they have bigger issues on their minds. Must understand they face issues they have never faced before
I agree, it allows for major relationship building which is crucial for student growth & learning https://t.co/ffqmKWcwUx
Small schools and small districts will be the winners in the future. Factory schools have got to end.
A5:making time for students to share what matters to them, teach them coping skills, empathy
A5: Schools can look like home or be the best vacation out there but without Empathy and thought/action awareness its
so important. But it makes me nervous to have this be a standard and Ss will have to take a test or monitor growth for soc/emot.
A5: involving Ss in The decision making process. Model collaboration, empathy, responsibility and consequences for not
A5 Must start with adult modeling problem-solving/composure/empathy. Regularly practice problem-solving skills in authentic opp.
A5: It starts with a school culture that builds kids up, loves each and every student, and celebrates their strengths.
A5: Ts have to be willing to teach more than content, sometimes personal skills trump academic
A5: Ss building relationships with their community that allow Ss to have opportunities to give back
A5: You've got to model those skills and expectation. I have "words we leave at the door" which creates a safe place to learn.
how will this be monitored? How will a score be put on their emotional and social development?
And character Ed in every lesson...so easy to weave in https://t.co/nGKjS1lkJA
A5: character ed wrapped in the whole day, teach the Maslov before the blooms, love those babies
A5) Soft skills! Provide teachers PD on how to effectively develop them in students.
let Ss know we all have different strengths and that's a great thing https://t.co/8atisvvDnv
A5: It starts with a school culture that builds kids up, loves each and every student, and celebrates their strengths.
Solution could involve change in amount of paperwork/steps or change in how paperwork managed at school.
LISTEN to our students about what's going on in our Ss lives!
Making the social and emotional well being of Ss and Ts more important than data and standardized test scores
A5: Treat every Ss as an opportunity to be successful! Be successful with every opportunity! Care and love to all!
: THANK YOU!! Grow your PLN support network! Growing List of KS educators that YOU will be added to: https://t.co/IoFtnelhOy
It's all good! This chat is full of positivity and energy. I'm so pumped!
A5: leaders (admin and teachers) have to value students and non-assessed skills as much as easier to read and address data
In elementary classes, morning meeting can be so important to teach empathy and truly for community!
THANK YOU everyone for sharing your VOICE & time tonite. You were part of a convo that WILL make a diff for teachers & KIDS.
A5 is busy introducing Ss to yoga at DCHS!
Ss and Ts must be valued in school. We want to have professional learning role model how we want schools to be.
Thank you for all your participation tonight! YOU make a difference!!
Character ed. programs, team building, leading by example, and building relationships with Ss. https://t.co/37ewa9iTdP
Agreed! And Admins allowing us to spend time building relationships throughout the year. Game changing! https://t.co/2j1xkHr4Vv
LISTEN to our students about what's going on in our Ss lives!
Class meeting & read aloud R invaluable in my classroom 4 community building.A win 4 social emotional also https://t.co/zqESc9c5np
A5 Strong mental health in students depends heavily on caring adults that are mentally strong as well!
Agree! I spend so much time working on these soft-skills to make them successful in Reg Ed room
Thank you for your time working w/us and for us to positively change things for Ts and Ss!
I'm challenging all of to do this, this week! Thank you for the inspiration ! https://t.co/bpB74xN4vb
Try It: Send an email to a colleague letting them know how grateful you are to work with them. 😀
A5-Listen to our Ss needs. The social/emotional skills must be taught.
Thanks everyone! Have a great week!
More recess! has a committee for this (I'm on it) survey will come out to admins Soon! https://t.co/VYBXzxS2U2
A5: Time has to be provided for Ss and Ts to work on soft skills and yes this means more unstructured time(recess) !
A5 when teachers teach growth mindset, goal setting, etc. it will change our culture/climate.
Great chat tonight! Excited to see so many new faces on
When you are in town visiting your daughter, the three of us should grab coffee
True! Ss respond 2 Ts & relationships not to knowing how 2 take a test or eat up instructional time 2 test https://t.co/6MggGVltJH
A5. Start w/ professional learning that puts humanity back into the prime focus over data.
As said at KEEN "Ss are worth more than a standardized test score on one day." We need to value the whole child
Have a great week! Believe in your voice, your leadership. Share. Your voice is worthy of being published, engaged on all levels.
Stoked to see how has grown. Who knew that 3 yrs ago when we started it, we'd grow like this?!
Always feel so positive and uplifted after Love hearing the amazing ideas from amazing educators!
This is why the stewardess says put the mask on yourself before assisting others. https://t.co/0t2wropf0e
A5 Strong mental health in students depends heavily on caring adults that are mentally strong as well!
Thank you for mod chat! Always GREAT resources and ideas shared!
Thanks for the ideas, teachers and admins!
