Keep the introductions coming and tag a friend or two! I'm excited to get started so here's Q1 #ycsdchat #ycsdchat
  • Historywmoses Jan 23 @ 8:10 PM EST
A1- as a history teacher/ STEM novice, I would argue that activities that require critical thinking, prototyping/revision, and collaboration best model the 21st century workplace and civic life. #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 23 @ 8:10 PM EST
STEM engages students by centering on higher thinking skills. Learning by doing. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Jan 23 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: I think it is important for students to apply their learning outside of the classroom in which they learn. For example, I'm always telling my sixth graders that its important to remember what is learned in English when they write in history #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:11 PM EST
Q1: Why is it important for our students to engage in STEM lessons? #ycsdchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:11 PM EST
A1: STEM allows our Ss to think out of the box to create amazing things. It helps with every aspect of life. Essential life skills.#ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 23 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1-Stem motivates Ss to use independent thinking, to think outside the box-use knowledge in atypical contexts, and make their own discoveries and/or build complex problem-solving skills #ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 23 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: I think STEM is the future and pieces of it can really be “taught” or included in all classes. I’m all about preparing our students to be contributing adult citizens in the ever changing 21st century world. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:13 PM EST
I agree! And the integration of skills in various settings prepares students for real world problems. #ycsdchat
    In reply to @Historywmoses
  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:13 PM EST
A1: I always felt the most important part of STEM was that there wasn't a right answer. It's about getting the information, planning a solution, building, testing, and repeat! Sometimes you fail miserably, but that's ok.There's so much to learn from that! #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:13 PM EST
    Yes! #ycsdchat
    In reply to @mike_myoung
  • hball1025 Jan 23 @ 8:13 PM EST
Definitely incorporates all the 5C's to help Ss be competitive in the global work market #ycsdchat
    In reply to @Historywmoses
  • REEdelstein Jan 23 @ 8:14 PM EST
A1: One thing STEM tends to do well is show students how learning in one discipline can help support students in other disciplines, but sometimes this lesson does not translate across to artistic disciplines within the humanities. #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 23 @ 8:15 PM EST
A1 our ETFs have a wealth of skills to share in our lessons with students. They can take your lessons and add technology with you.#ycsdchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:15 PM EST
    A1: 5cs so important!#ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:15 PM EST
I think the creativity component is critical! This not only supports problem solving, but encourages entrepreneurship and new solutions. #ycsdchat

A2--Through the interdisciplinary connections Ss can make in their learning--they can see and understand that the topics or skills they may learn do not actually happen in isolation in the "real world." #ycsdchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:18 PM EST
A2: at the bare minimum, it tea has students to fail, but not give up. Failure allows one to make the largest gains. Never give up and keep trying until problem solved. #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 23 @ 8:19 PM EST
    Developing Grit #ycsdchat
    In reply to @fisher_dfisher
  • MrsSMBean Jan 23 @ 8:19 PM EST
A2: As a history teacher sometimes the feels like STEM is off limits but that’s really untrue. You can always include technology and math in lessons especially with maps, graphs, and info charts. #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Jan 23 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: I think requiring students to apply knowledge and skills in a different setting is important for them to solidify information as well as understand what their future career might require. #ycsdchat
  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:21 PM EST
A2: STEM puts integration in the forefront. Ss see where the content is connected and embrace it. #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 23 @ 8:21 PM EST
A1: It's important that our students engage in STEM because it's important for our society to have students problem solve using materials and interweave skills from the different disciplines. #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Jan 23 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: I think STEM subjects and programs are often ones that students can find intrinsic motivation to want to do well in. Society values leaders in STEM, and students can often find role models or job opportunities through STEM. #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 23 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: As discussed, STEM helps students problem solve and show creativity, which can be used in any subject area. #ycsdchat
  • TiannaSAnthony - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:23 PM EST
A2: STEM across the curriculum will challenge students’ thinking but it is not an easy thing for teachers to do. Using math and science teachers as resources are essential when planning lessons. This article is helpful and filled with ideas. https://t.co/RvzdlIMHYJ #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2: STEM activities can often engage Ss that may struggle in isolated content areas. I saw an example of this in a STEM club today. Some Ss who aren't alway successful in the classroom were engaged in problem solving & embraced the challenge in the STEM activity #ycsdchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:24 PM EST
My favorite comment with my Ss when they struggle is "epic failure" and try again. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:24 PM EST
    This truly exemplifies learning! #ycsdchat
    • mike_myoung Jan 23 @ 8:21 PM EST

I love the excitement I see in my students with STEM activities! #YCSDchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: this morning at #wmeStars coding club, asked them what they wanted to do this morning. We had #gamedesign using #bloxels. #scratch, #dash&dot they were all creating amazing unique and creative things without concern of failure. #ycsdchat
  • MrsCooperYES Jan 23 @ 8:29 PM EST
A3: One of my favorite STEM challenges that I've done in my class was having students create parachutes for an egg to drop off the second floor of our grade level pod. The students worked well together to plan and create their parachutes and only 2 eggs broke! #ycsdchat
  • chelseifox Jan 23 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3: my favorite STEM lesson was with MrMorrisons Class. We combined the hummingbird robots, simple machines and #rubegderg to make the funniest, absurd machines! The design and creation pulled a lot on their arts and crafts skills too! #ycsdchat
  • hball1025 Jan 23 @ 8:30 PM EST
A3-Interdisciplinary Shark Tank--Ss had to problem-solve an issue in history--create invention to prevent or repair (ex. devastation of atomic bomb, Johnstown Flood, flu epidemic, etc)--write plan, create and build model, etc. #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:31 PM EST

  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:31 PM EST
A3: Back when I taught 5th, we planned STEM projects to go with our reading units. We read an article about the dangers of trash in the ocean then students designed a new way to package cans and bottles without plastic rings. Lots of great ideas! #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Jan 23 @ 8:31 PM EST
#ycsdchat I like the choice aspect of the club. I feel like that would really help the students invest!

  • MrsSMBean Jan 23 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: In our most recent unit we studied the major inventions and inventors of the 1920s. It may be a stretch but I feel like it was STEM in History bc my Ss made lots of connections to inventions today and their purpose and value. #ycsdchat
  • chelseifox Jan 23 @ 8:34 PM EST
A3: when my son was in MrsCagles class, he had the best time building a web to catch Spider-Man! #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:34 PM EST
What a great way to teach entrepreneurship! And identifying problem to solve is both engaging and high level learning #ycsdchat

  • MrsCooperYES Jan 23 @ 8:41 PM EST
A4: Some students are able to "talk" better during STEM than I'm other subjects. To make it more accessible, give the project in chunks, help students understand that they aren't done if it doesn't work, and assist with guiding questions to help them problem solve. #ycsdchat
  • ElizabethLeste6 Jan 23 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4 Use Science, Techology, Engineering, and Math interdisciplinary. Ask your Art teacher to do a lesson in art to bring in a creative extension lesson where the students make it with their hands.#ycsdchat
  • MrsSMBean Jan 23 @ 8:42 PM EST
A4: STEM requires students to tap into new skills. All Ss should have the opportunity to engage. Who knows what the future (career) holds for a particular child? #ycsdchat

  • REEdelstein Jan 23 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: The best way to make STEM accessible to every1, & to illustrate that the creative processes in the arts translate to maths & sciences, is to make an effort to include the arts in STEM (STEAM). This is critical, as it shows Ss the value of interdisciplinary learning. #ycsdchat
  • fisher_dfisher Jan 23 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4: Its the foundation for all science's and the real world. It will never succeed without #equityforall #ycsdchat How do we make it accessible for all? Must be taught in all subjects and made part of everyday life.
  • chelseifox Jan 23 @ 8:45 PM EST
I think STEM helps them become peoblem solvers for everyday life. It helps them learn its ok to try and fail them try again! More Ts need to be trained to know how to incorporate it into their content at their Ss level #ycsdchat
  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4: Several of our schools offer STEM clubs and make efforts to engage students who are often underrepresented in STEM related careers #ycsdchat

  • kecagle - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:50 PM EST
  • chelseifox Jan 23 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4: I also think Ts over complicate STEM sometimes. It doesn’t have to be robots and coding and 3D printers- all@of which I ❤️. It can be incorporated in small ways all the time. We need to change their perspective too #ycsdchat

  • MsInsley - Moderator Jan 23 @ 8:54 PM EST
A5: I would say it helps to experience STEM as a student before facilitating it as a teacher. Having staff work through STEM projects helps to generate an excitement and promote an understanding of what STEM is. #ycsdchat

    Can't wait #ycsdchat
  • REEdelstein Jan 23 @ 8:55 PM EST
A5: I think the best way to show that we value STEM is to work it into our lessons. If students can see in the classroom how STEM can translate to a life after public school, then students will get a sense of real world applications and see “why it matters.” #ycsdchat
  • mike_myoung Jan 23 @ 8:55 PM EST
A5: When we work together on planning, we can slowly offer suggestions that use STEM or other cross curricular ideas. Collaborating together is much more effective than just saying, "Hey I did this why don't you try it." #ycsdchat
