I hope you liked it! I love and the community of teachers!
Hi Thomas! Glad you could join us again to give us your technical expertise!
Hi Doug! Welcome back! Excited to hear how West Michigan is handling cyber bullying!
Yes I am a fan too, Lupe. You are a super star! :D
Let me introduce tonight's guest host - !
I'll be on after supper. Family first :)
you are too kind! :) thank you!!
Welcome back Jibran - so glad you're able to make the time difference work so we can hear your international POV!
Always family first! We'll see you in a bit!
Hi all! Tim here, engineer at . Hope to better understand and have a great conversation about cyberbullying today!
Happy no cyberbullying at K, but want to be proactive and empower SS with so they don't fall victim in future
Q1: How does cyberbullying affect you and your students? Have you had conversations about cyberbullying with your kids?
Absolutely essential! It always starts with those foundational skills and building that confidence!
As an administration, I felt like I spent way 2 much time dealing with cyberbullying issues on Instagram especially
Anyone used the app mentioned in the video My Social Sitter?
Part of the national curriculum, information reinforced at any available opportunity, all about empowering Ss
A1: I feel like sometimes we get stuck not knowing "whose" job it is to aggressively put an end to the cyber bullying
A1: Introducing Snapchat in schools was/can be really deadly to culture building
A1: And trying to keep parents abreast of the tools their children are using can feel like its own full-time job!
There's a national curriculum on cyberbullying? Do the students have to sign a pledge and watch a webinar?
Q1: this was a topic in my advisory hour last week. Key imo is to make Ss aware of cyber bullying and the harm it can cause.
I haven't tried it yet - but I wonder how it's blockers are set up. Only on language? Or "mean thoughts" too?
How do you go about reinforcing the curriculum to the students?
seriously!!! their have been too many scary stories on the news about kids snapchatting really awful events
Yes - nasty names that then led to calling each other out to fight - in or after school
A1: Heard on TedEd talk that school tend to limit BYO, tech ed fear of cyberbullying instead we should teach how to use
Sorry, its part of the NC here, all students are taught a range of topics around e-safety
Does it have to be aggressive? If it's addressed early, etc, does that change how to deal with it?
Any particular aspects of cyberbullying that are most important to highlight to Ss?
And then somebody HAS to step in - I felt like it was my responsibility to track my students on social media!
The scariest part is the alarming suicide rates that bullying causes
teaching good practise, having an open environment where students feel confident enough to share any concerns
A1: What are people use for esafety instruction? What age does it start?
A1 something I have yet to encounter! please share situations and how it was handled!
Absolutely - is there an appropriate age to start having these conversations?
its a double edge sword, you can't legally follow them, but you do have to keep tabs on what happens...
Jibran, good to see your using we need to talk about this:)
W/all the positive ways that we could connect students around the world with Snapchat - you WANT them to use it
A1: Concern for me as K teacher starting to young is removing innocence - most would not think of cyberbullying at 5-6 years
You just don't want them getting hurt or hurting others!
Yes - because we can "take it away" but we can't prevent it outside of school! We have to TEACH not deny!
A1: I wonder if proactive ideas like PBIS and Char. Ed., might have a roll?
as early as 3rd grade unfortunately... i've had little girls post inappropriate pictures and it kills me
That's awesome - I feel like different cities/states have been trying to grow to that, but we're not there yet!
I think that it needs to be as widely advocated for as bullying as a whole - which isn't dealt with well yet either
A1: Let's empower students and not enable.
The LASTING effect!! The fact that it can be permanent! Not like verbal teasing which might disappear
rather than talking cyberbullying to 6 year olds, could one focus on how to treat others, regardless of medium?
But people can go back and READ your mean thoughts days, weeks, months, and years later!
My HS Ss filled out questionnaire. But witness the message being taught with my own kids in elem. school
Yes - that was totally highlighted in that one movie - Unplugged I think - with Jason Bateman
A1: I haven't had too much in 3rd grade. We use instances as learning opps Biggest prob. for me is getting Ps to understand
A1: I also believe creating a respectful, collaborative classroom (primary) lends itself to viewing each other w/respect.
oh yes the digital tattoo! Permanent!
Im using 6 levels of moral development 2 talk about responsibilities they have toward ea other, its helped
A:1 Not a lot of cyber bullying in 3rd grade, however, we discuss digital citizenship nearly everyday.
And how do we go about teaching that "good practice" - is it enough to harp on being kind?
A1: Sometimes I think perhaps at the primary level we highlight char. ed & assume by the time they reach 3+ gr they know it
I was teaching a Kindergarten class last year on bullying that included a cyberbullying unit - real quick 1 day
Presenting scenarios to students, having them see the affects of cyberbullying
We had an unbelievable amount of 8th grade girls caught up in an instagram situation last year. Brought in parents
What curriculum did you use?
presenting them with one half of a video, getting them to plan what happens next and then showing them
framing policy around responsible use v "do not's" is important. I have seen many policies with a list of thou shalt not...
I think it's legal to follow them if they've friended you - I kept a teacher account just for that reason
Unless the under 13 thing pertains to teachers/administrators? Can we not follow our kids?
What is 6 levels..online, purchased curriculum. Did it address cyberbullying?
Yes, I think 1 of biggest problems of cyberbullying is bullies don't see or feel the consequences of their actions
Welcome! Glad to see some new ideas floating about this topic!
I still relive some mean things said to me in elementary. Being able to read them may be good
Q2: How do you respond and prevent cyberbullying? Is there a specific program or conversation starters you are using?
Did the students understand. Curious what type of questions and did some then try it - curious
Welcome! Glad to hear that the cyberbullying hasn't been haunting your kids. Perhaps you're instilling great values
I make it very clear to my Ss that I see ALL when using . It eliminates the cyber bullying from the equation! ❤️ it
That digital citizenship is so key! Welcome - glad to hear you're being so proactive!
So which type of framing are you advocating for? More of what kids should do and less of what they shouldn't?
Hi Heather - all set for NCCE next week. Hoping to tease some attendees with Seesaw and then send them 2 you on Fr
A2: non-anonymous accounts would probably be a good way to cut down on cyberbullying.
Valid point - you don't want to introduce things that might really shake their trust of the world too early
We use to post and comment. Ts approve ALL posts and comments which helps eliminate some and allows for Dig Cit talks
Both great solutions - positive behavior = treating each other well = not bullying
It's great you watch your Ss when you're in class, but do you worry about what they do when you're not watching?
Of each other? It's so sad - and it's probably a learned trait at that early age, right?
Or give them ideas they did not think of up until then -the whole copycat idea or just try curious
Hey Cathy! Looking forward to your workshop and NCCE...just putting on the finishing touches!
Anything your own kids are learning that you're bringing into your classroom?
Prevention and preparation are important in reducing any kind of bullying. We use the 7 Healthy Habits of Happy Kids.
Would help, but I think that a fair amount of cyberbullying happens on non-anonymous networks, like Facebook
Absolutely - sometimes it seems like the parents are completely out of the loop (which is intentional by their kids
absolutely. I try to keep class comfortable and safe. Outside of class, well all we can do is educate.
A2 or i make students take things down right away. and give them "The Look" :) along with a convo https://t.co/DYnA9XWDoR
We probably make the same assumptions about content as well (reading/math facts, etc.) Not a good assumption
I don't tell them about "history" and how I can see what they do on iPads. I just touch mention I know
Absolutely - they don't hear the pain and suffering or see the sadness they cause - the visceral reaction
"The Look" haha I've been mastering that lately.
I'm back! A2: Ss usually refer directly to our school counselor.
I will be at your's as well, if I can help let me know. Will do a shout out to you if that is OK
How do the referrals work? Ss go to counselor themselves, or can refer other students?
As a job seeker though, I could see what these kids said in anger when they were in middle school
I touch base and mention something they did on iPad and they are like - whoa how did you know that! https://t.co/OeSwtgAbgE
I don't tell them about "history" and how I can see what they do on iPads. I just touch mention I know
yes... never underestimate the power of squinty eyes and pursed lips
will always be a free app?
The kids only grazed the surface of the understanding for sure. But it was during recess...
the iPad's stay in my classroom so I have some control & search history which has led to discussions.
A2: has to be dealt in the same manner as bullying, has to be part of school policies and Ss should know who to speak to
That's an interesting point - how do you apply that outside of Classkick?
thats the best! when they see that you "see everything" lol
Often a digital referral/email letting counselor know what they witnessed. We also have anonymous link on website
Absolutely. I think a major challenge with cyberbullying is that often it's not as visible as in-person bullying
Looks like the next update in iOS will help with some of the issues we face in the classroom. Like knowing what Ss are up to.
But do we want the entire world to by non-anonymous? Shouldn't you have some space to be an unknown character?
Q3: When should parents, teachers, and administrators convene in cyberbullying situations? Does it depend on age of student?
A2: Proactive - ask students what are positive choices - they lead, then ask what will consequence be if poor choices, etc.
can't easily. I have to wander around room like sneaky ninja. However new iOS will give tchr lots more control
these are really great! Thank you for sharing!
Interesting! Do you feel like students are prevented from posting inappropriately simply bc you moderate?
Colin Shevlin joining from sunny Chicago. I like bilingual education and positive classroom culture.
either way, I'm not sure that removal of anonymity is a complete solution to cyberbullying
Yep the whole eyes on the back of your head - at K they believe that or that I have magical powers
Agreed - even when kids know exactly who they are - they will say some awful things
Is that something you suggest, or you force?
Of course. But maybe teach kids to treat it as if it wasn't? Act with respect and dignity, even when anonymous.
Yes!I think that keeping a close eye and being able to use mistakes as learning opps is important esp w/young Ss
My 2nd graders still believe I can make magic potions :) he he
Your "looks" are so powerful!
A new favorite term learned from A. Keene - "automagically". I automagically know things :D
Are you saying that you can't make magic potions??? thought that was requirement of being a teacher
Are you doing anything in class before they have to go see the counselor?
A3: matter should be investigated by the school and then referred to the relevant authorities 3rd parties.
i've only taught up to 5th grade, and it has been "highly suggested" in every situation :)
We believe in keeping great technology available for teachers and students who need it the most!
Q3: As a parent and teacher I would want to know EARLY!
i just LOL'ed in real life. !!
A3: Always at every level. Negative behavior outside of the classroom will negatively affect your classroom culture.
Yes, it will be so interesting to see what that newest update brings to school iPad interactions!
I can make growing potions! :) and training puppy potions :)
A3: Tough question. Maybe no set answer. Definitely if risk of harm. I think some would stop if Ss knew Ps would find out.
A3: As a teacher, I felt like it should be admin that intervenes when necessary. As an admin, I really wanted my teachers!
Totally, knowing EARLY is key. But should Ps/Ts step in right away, or allow Ss to handle situation at all?
Welcome! Glad to hear you were able to brave that snow storm to join us!
Those magical powers sure do come in handy!
The vast majority of our cyber bullying happens outside of school, not in class or on school apps.
YES on iOS 9.3 - cannot WAIT! Although 9.2 was a bit rough for a bit fingers crossed 9.3 will be vetted for bugs
A3 depending on situation, I have a convo with them, but big things, parents and admin right away https://t.co/wCYG7weFkd
we're fortunate to have an excellent filtering device for all devices connected to school wifi. However Ss use own device🙁
How does the school investigate in a timely manner? Who looks into it? How?
I usually get the best results when I intervene in bullying situations with my Ss. Ps tend to be bias and blame others.
Nothing worse than having a parent conference with multiple parents blaming each other!
A3: Important to remember you could have the worlds best filtering program, but it is down to teaching good online habits
fact that cyberbullying happens outside school is why I think education, not monitoring, is key
Absolutely - because as soon as they graduate from you... They have to be ready when you can't be there!
dedicated staff, safeguarding officers would investigate and escalate
Wow - it sounds like your school has some great preventative and responsive efforts/staff in place!
Good point; as with real bullying, biased P intervention seems to not always help the situation
I inform Ps as a last resort of issues in the classroom. Everyone is happier that way.
very true... they never think their child could be doing the bullying
Q4: Kids often use their own devices to bully. Do you allow cell phones in your classroom? Do positives outweigh negatives?
We had a Ss face criminal charges for soliciting & sharing compromising pics. scared some kids into better choices.
But what if they find out first? I've had a couple of teachers that were parents & that equation no longer works!
A4: I'm still so torn on this. I've only ever worked at schools where they were denied& when kids snuck them in, havoc ensued
A4 my kids don't have phones but they do use an old iphone I have to work on some online things. https://t.co/p0iMRhUmSJ
Q4: Kids often use their own devices to bully. Do you allow cell phones in your classroom? Do positives outweigh negatives?
A4: I feel like, in theory, they should have them and we stress how to use them appropriately.
A4: No mobiles in classrooms, social media is blocked (excluding twitter). All Ss have access to iPads so no real need
Thanks for the Be A Buddy Not a Bully :D
But we had a lot of issues with Facetime and Messaging on iPads and inappropriate messages sent
A4: School policy is off and in locker. We have iPads. Still can access messaging apps, but usually do at home.
its so sad students don't see how it will affect them in the long term once they have a a record
That can be centrally controlled during school hours, consequences of using mobiles in class,
I am going to agree, there are so many other safe programs already out there
I feel like I can't contribute much, but I do tell the kids I can see whatever they're doing on the ipad, true or not lol
A4: what do you think about those who say schools are not relevant to Ss life when we block social media, etc.
A4:You can't prevent access to a device the rest of the day. Having devices is a must, so are consequences for misuse.
Seems like you're building your own "magical" powers ;-)
My Ss are too young. The few who do have them, keep them off and in their backpack or on my desk.
You can normally go back and delete old things, or delete the account, but many don't
I think there's some truth to that statement. Its like we go back in time when we walk in school.
I usually have to put out a lot of fires when students create situations that may not exist
A4: I believe that information, education is powerful and can info. beats fear, bullying. Let's not hide heads/tech in sand
Kindof a tangent, but do you know twitter is specifically excluded? seems no better/worse than any other
I think if you can scare them a little at our grade, its enough :)
A4: Let's be proactive, creative address issue and prevent rather than react
Ultimately Ss are at school to learn, checking facebook/snapchat is not conducive to learning, do that at break
But what if they were checking out how Coke uses Snapchat as digital marketing?
And compare that to print marketing of the 1950s?
A4: We have Char Ed announcements, give recog. for + acts and 2x a yrI create video iMove trailers highlighting + students
I see your point, but that is for you as a T to decide, you can always find an alternative
There aren't many Ss with phones or their own tech in 3rd grade. Those who do keep them in their backpack
I'd use my account on smart board instead of them using their own at school.
used as a summary for a lesson, using hashtags to share a learning
but couldn't you have students just google images then? it would be safer.
But as a teacher, I can't decide that if all social media is being blocked by the district!
I guess that is different, school here has control on what is blocked
I agree, know your students - again proactive not reactive where possible
Yes&some would say having them walk into a Google Image search is its own adventure!
For every bad thing blocked, you're usually also blocking a good thing. and vice versa
yes it is unfortunately...
Q5: Is there a difference between a cell phone, or other BYOD, and laptops that the school provides in terms of Ss safety?
I hate seeing dist blocking social media. I learn more here than in most PD meetings. I think Ss learning potential is high 2
Yes blocking good and bad our district blocked YouTube until realized it hurt
A5: BYOD def blurs line between school device &a personal device. & harder to set & enforce limits
A5 are there some things you can only do on a phone that you cant on a laptop? snapchat? instagram? https://t.co/dBr4gfGNUn
Q5: Is there a difference between a cell phone, or other BYOD, and laptops that the school provides in terms of Ss safety?
A5: I feel like my own social media usage blurs between personal and work, and it would for kids, too.
A5: But in terms of safety, they have to know that they live to expectations ALL the time
Agreed, the more I talk to Ts the more I feel blocking limits teacher creativity & S learning potential
A5: Whether its in a personal email, or something to a teacher about school. Wasn't that the recent Hillary issue?
Absolutely Blocking content aka censorship and blocks creativity and freedom
A Ss threatened our school via Twitter a cpl wks ago. & hacker took Twitter acct of girl to threaten other schl.
A5: Balance, balance, balance
A5: if students BYOD then they must follow same rules as others, easier to enforce rules.
Would an app like the one mentioned in video work on school network or devices? Social Sitter - new op for developers??? Hint
A5: What have you to say developers????
Create a class acct to use instead of students using personal accts. Safer compromise.
But your kids have to turn in individual work some time, right?
Good starting point is use of SeeSaw or edmodo. Controlled environment.
We're working as hard as we can to make as great as we can!
We could definitely add in some profanity checkers / etc.
A5: Class accounts for Twitter? Would teacher be responsible?
We're always looking for new ideas, either for improvements or new products
Except right now, 'cause we're all on twitter ;)
Q6: Where do you see the future headed with devices, communication, bullying, and education? Is there a positive trend coming?
Not via Twitter & social media. That's what I meant.
There are 23 hours left in the day - go for it! :D LOL
A5: school provided devices can definitely be more locked down, or have other babysitting software on them.
A6: I'd like to believe that we are coming to a place where students are creating on social media.
A6: Creating a presence for themselves that helps them get hired someday, and expresses identity in short term
and while you are at it have AI and of course easy, elegant UI
Who needs sleep when you're running on innovation???
Getting Ss to carry out a search of their name, teaching of digital footprint can have a massive impact on Ss view
and solving profound problems!
Especially if they have a unique name and end up as one of the top results! So powerful!
A6: bullying has been around forever and unfortunately things like only promote bullying https://t.co/GrqW3Jssui
Q6: Where do you see the future headed with devices, communication, bullying, and education? Is there a positive trend coming?
I was thinking the same thing, show them the trail they leave and how they will be held accountable - big brother!
But can we spin those - especially with the celebrity PSAs - to showcase feelings and responses?
A6: Our Ss (7/8 gr) are NASTY online right now. Sexually profane. Can't help but be worried. & they think it's normal.
A6 but I would like 2 believe students will learn to use tech not just to communicate but to create https://t.co/GrqW3Jssui
Q6: Where do you see the future headed with devices, communication, bullying, and education? Is there a positive trend coming?
yeah, it's not going anywhere. At best, there will be more laws and ways to respond to it to make it stop.
A6: Respect, education, reteaching, hearts and minds - home, school, developers working in tandem. We can do it! :D
I think that we had that issue before social media, too, but now its captured for everyone to see :-(
Intrsting, but I'm wary. I see more & more Ss creating their primary identity on social media and that scares me
