Q1: What worked well during your indi period at practice this past season? Drills/Time/Position Mtg/etc... Something that really elevated the learning/teaching at that position? #swarmfbchat
Q1: I look at we don’t do well and see how we practiced it. Look at what we practiced that we didn’t need. Figure out how to do maintenance as the season goes #swarmfbchat
A1: early on Middle Linebackers Guard reads.... later on slowing reads down for EVERYONE and talking through our reads from OLB to Safeties #swarmfbchat
Q1: What worked well during your indi period at practice this past season? Drills/Time/Position Mtg/etc... Something that really elevated the learning/teaching at that position? #swarmfbchat
A1: teaching kids how to watch film helped us a ton! We also focused team/practice time tuesdays for 1st/2nd down and Wednesdays for 3rd and would watch film that way too would also mix in 2-min drill and goal line #swarmfbchat
A1: We do a Drill 2x a week called “Middle/Perimeter”. OLBs and DEs work vs 1 and 2 back looks and how the fit changes. Monday was BASE, Tuesday was Stunts. Showing how Stunts change the fits was huge for us #swarmfbchat
Q1: What worked well during your indi period at practice this past season? Drills/Time/Position Mtg/etc... Something that really elevated the learning/teaching at that position? #swarmfbchat
A1: for defensive line Indy I always make sure to intro and explain and new drills or periods during the Monday practice. Your defensive focus practice cannot be the first time they see something new #swarmfbchat
A1: Keep everything relative to how it affected us that Friday. I didn't do drills for the sake of it. If we were seeing heavy G-Fold that week, everything we did had a G-Fold in it. #swarmfbchat
Teaching block getoffs in tight with corners to help them truly be out force players on the edge. Started them two yards apart with toss/bubble action towards them. Focusing hard on using hands and keeping leverage.
#swarmfbchat
A1:Did some circuit drills with dline and LBs made time more efficient and believe it helped both positions see how each related to each other. Which showed the importance of do your job. #swarmfbchat
A1. Started doing a mirror step drill with DL (got idea from LB drills). We are a base read D, bunch of young/new guys up front this year. This helped a TON! Start slow, then go. #swarmfbchat
Q1: Having a small defensive call sheet for gameday. We were able to rep the same skills over and over because our player's responsibilities did not vary greatly from play to play. For example with OLB's we repped setting the edge ad nauseam. #swarmfbchat

Q1: What worked well during your indi period at practice this past season? Drills/Time/Position Mtg/etc... Something that really elevated the learning/teaching at that position? #swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
5-10 minutes of indy a day. Use that time to teach new checks and go over what we are going to see. But I teach what I want them to learn and rep it every day during Summer, so that come the season we can solely focus on what we are going to see that Friday. #swarmfbchat
A2: I actually look closely at our alignment from the endzone cam. Seeing what we were in and how we operated. Helps me with what I will ask our booth coach to look for next season. #swarmfbchat
A2: Really pretty informal, Google docs shared document helps share and free flow ideas from coaches. Make notes and comments on changes or suggestions for next year. Can keep a running total of chats/ clinic ideas as well #swarmfbchat
A2: is there a better technique, scheme, answer to deal with things. Being realistic about what we can do. What do we have to do to beat the best we play? #swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
A2. I first look for exemplar technique I can use to teach next group. Then I look for anything we were screwed up on and missed in season (scheme or technique). I look at big runs or teams that ran somethings repeatedly for gains.I #swarmfbchat
A2: I tend to focus more on the opponent, especially a conference team and if certain players are back, we run the Hudl self scout reports to get the numbers on the year... I am going to break down big offensive plays and first downs given up to find patterns #swarmfbchat
I mostly look for technique and assignment knowledge. I want my players to use the offseason as an opportunity to polish their knowledge of the offense and get better fundamentally #swarmfbchat
A2: Grade sheet and I also keep all my play call sheet to judge our alignment due to the fact we adjusted our alignment to teams that tried to out leverage us. Also, I look at hustle/pursuit/tackling and I make notes on Hudl. #swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
A2: start by watching the end of every play. Want to see result and tackler. Where was point of contact. Backward planning forces to see a lot. #Swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
Self evaluation of us I will be looking at loafs on every play of the game as the Head Coach. I am interested in other templates on how they do it. #swarmfbchat
A2 Overall Areas or aspects that we were bad at. Why were we bad at it (Scheme, personnel, other) How can we get better at it. For us it was our edge defense last few years coming into this season #swarmfbchat
A2: Basically what we've done in the past is look for what hurt us the most and how to fix it. It's very informal, we have a roundtable approach through text & email. #swarmfbchat
A2: I look at position groups that I'm not the position coach for. May have missed something during the season because I was too busy looking at my position group. #swarmfbchat
A2 Break down all the stats based on D&D, Run, Pass, Play Call, Fronts, Blitz & coverage. Look at big plays why gave up big plays: call, scheme & execution. #swarmfbchat
A2 One thing I heard recently is going over film and calculating the percentage of time the first tackler finishes the play. Have some film from our youth season I might watch back through again for this.
#swarmfbchat
A2 cont: What I'm lookikng for in my position is how well what we drilled throughout the year showed up in game, so I know what to adjust or tweak for this coming year. #swarmfbchat
Kyle Suttles, D.C. Northwest HS, Grand Island, NE... Super late! But I'm still checking in to the #swarmfbchat. Excited to learn and grow with you all this off-season.
A2: Continued: I also grade my play calling and the speed at which I get the call in; found out I had Cover 2 against Trips and quit calling to personal packages to formations 11 personal is different in Doubles and Trips lol #swarmfbchat
A2: I always try to start up front when I watch film bc I know to be successful it starts up front on both sides of the ball. When we are good up front we are real good most everywhere else #swarmfbchat
A3: For us getting ahead is all in the weightroom and with film. We offer multiple times for lifting. We will begin film after the new year. Position coaches should spearhead the positional film meetings. #swarmfbchat
A3: We are fortunate to have 20 practices in the spring. But we have already started lifting, and we start implementing drills, classroom, and film time. Probably start this in January, 2x a week #swarmfbchat
#Swarmfbchat A1:
I started w/ the same 2 drills every day but adjusted small things based on what offense we see that week.
3rd-4th drill (depending on time that day) was more specific to what'd we see & let me talk through & coach specific things to see/react to
A3. No spring ball in MI. We do weekly 30 min position meetings Jan-June for 9-11 grades (next season JV/V). Watch film, chalk/install, get to know guys, etc. #swarmfbchat
A3: Personally, rest. Been going nonstop since late April. After Christmas will start reading all I can about ILB play & coverages. Branching out. #swarmfbchat
A3: we have access to a domed, turf field for speed, agility, 7on7 stuff once a week, coaching wise: looking to set up more meetings with coaches that do what we do to pick their brains #swarmfbchat
A3:I want to get my safety/Sam/ and CB working on drops and getting to right spots and communication on routes...making sure our 👀 are right hurt ourselves in situatioms not being where we are supposed to be #swarmfbchat
A1 Loved our pursuit drill. Worked wonders for us this year. As far as Indy goes a lot of success came from us just talking about what we are going to see. Spent a lot of time on the mental game #Swarmfbchat
Q1: What worked well during your indi period at practice this past season? Drills/Time/Position Mtg/etc... Something that really elevated the learning/teaching at that position? #swarmfbchat
A3 Meet as staff 1 to 2 times a month starting in January. For me tight now Alot of film watching now, evaluating whats coming back, potential position changes. Trying to find ways to improve #swarmfbchat
Q3: We want our guys to do 7 on 7. We’re also meeting with them once a week or so. Encouraging some of them to go and get personal coaching. #swarmfbchat
A3: in KS we are really limited, we will have open gym in January at 6am; athletes have access to Hudl. Springtime we will have white board time, but as a staff we will attend conferences and setup relationships in our community #swarmfbchat
A2 grouped everything into a season bundle on hudl and now looking at what we did well in the redzone and how much time we spent on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd downs #Swarmfbchat
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
A3 Feel like I am a HS coach trapped in a youth coach's body. Its hard to get other youth coaches to talk too much ball until the season about starts. So I'll just keep digging/learning on my own. Watch some others film and try to get with HS to mininc what they do.
#swarmfbchat
Q3: we developed an weight room competition for our team. Coaches all have a team of guys, points for various things/gains. Kids are into it and coaches are meeting weekly to see results/attendance/tweaks #swarmfbchat
Weight room, encourage multi sport athletes, try to get athletes to stay connected with each other throughout the year. For coaches clinics, chalk talk, etc. #swarmfbchat
A3 Read, Read, READ! Biggest thing that helped me is reading everything I can get my hands on and watch basic technique tapes. Always pick up things to use in the offseason. #swarmfbchat
Q4: Let's discuss your 2017 successes! What is something you did in practice/games that we can connect to the off-season or next spring/summer? #swarmfbchat
Q4: Let's discuss your 2017 successes! What is something you did in practice/games that we can connect to the off-season or next spring/summer? #swarmfbchat
A4: Relationships! Players and coaches! Get to know them. Know how they are motivated. Let them know you love them and they will play harder! #Swarmfbchat
A4: Like I said before, kept the gameday call sheet small. Didn't install as much stuff as in previous years, responsibilities didn't vary much and our kids lined up and played football. #swarmfbchat
A1: we had staggered dismissal and filled in the early part of practice w/ tackling and turnover circuits until everyone got there. Some type of tackling everyday w/ mat, emphasis of high profile/low profile #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A3:
Film wise I'm going to look at what hurt us on the whole this last season & how to correct it.
First want to see whether it was scheme or execution.
From there it's how to correct the scheme or execution to make it better.
A4 LB run reads.. didn’t feel like we were the best at flowing to the ball or being patient with iso right at us. Using our tools as well, like better film of practice. I’m taking the endzone camera out everyday #Swarmfbchat
Q4: Let's discuss your 2017 successes! What is something you did in practice/games that we can connect to the off-season or next spring/summer? #swarmfbchat
A4. I got my N to adjust alignment based on backfield sets, something we installed while doing film study last spring. New guy, picked it up and was able to do it week 1. Also we got better at recognizing pre snap tells/keys and types of pass pro, all film related. #swarmfbchat
A4: We were very good with the small details. It really showed on the DL vs the run; our starting D gave up 11.4 ppg with a Frosh NG and 2 Soph DTs. #swarmfbchat
A4 What you practice & preach is what you'll get from the kids! Major 2017 success: Led the state of Wisconsin in takeaways. 41 in 14 games (25 picks, 16 FF) and 4 TDs. Kids bought in and it worked.
#swarmfbchat
A4 Edge Defense/Jet Sweep Defense Been really bad last 2 to 3 years. DEs getting hooked, Alley and Force players getting abused. Was a point of emphasis day 1 of summer. We really improved those aspects on defense. #swarmfbchat
A4: we pick a guy to be the voice of the coach. If there is any confusion he either A) calls the play or B) call a timeout.... saved us multiple times #swarmfbchat
Q5: Not even a question... Let's share some points of pride from this past season! Record-breakers/all-league players/stats/etc. Also, include the scheme you employed as well! #swarmfbchat
That’s the way to go. Less the kids have to think about and the more they go out and just play football. There is a lot you want to put in but you have to control your self as a coach #SWARMFBCHAT
A2: create playlist on Hudl for every play in the season where we gave up 10+ yards. Identify if problem was from poor alignment, missed assignment, bad key read, poor block destruction, poor pursuit, and/or poor tackling. Draw up plan to fix. #swarmfbchathttps://t.co/jEZ5RaIkfz
Q2: What do you look for if/when studying game film from previous season? Any charts/templates/organizers that you use that you can share - for evaluation purposes? #swarmfbchat
A4: Picking our hill to die on & keeping responsibilities simple. Don't change our responsibilities depending on whom we play. Kids play faster if they comfortable, not of they are trying to remember something brand new they learned 3 days ago. #swarmfbchat
A4-. Hand fights and hand placement drills for linebackers. Found it critical that they play with hands to get off blocks and make plays. Also worked tackle drills (slower pace) w/o helmet to ensure head placement and build confidence.#swarmfbchat
A5: We won 5 games in a row; held teams to 2 scores a game; had a LB lead the conference in tackles with 116. Increased total takeaways from 2 and 6 in the 2 years before we got there to 17 total last year! #swarmfbchat
A5. 5th consecutive playoff appearance, 3rd straight league championship. 3 of 4 new starters on DL. All league DE, a junior, with 13 sacks in 10 games. We are 4-4/4-2-5 defense. #swarmfbchat
A5 it was pretty cool how versatile our defense was. Base 3-4 but we put a 4-2-5 and a 3-3 stack in as well. The even front needs some work tho 😢
#Swarmfbchat
Q5: Not even a question... Let's share some points of pride from this past season! Record-breakers/all-league players/stats/etc. Also, include the scheme you employed as well! #swarmfbchat
#swarmfbchat A4:
Thought we did a good job executing our base defense against most of what we saw throughout the season, & the simplicity/flexibility of what we do carried down to the lower levels.
A5: MN all star DE, 3/3 all conference players played defense, 4 more honorable mention, competed well with a 6A schedule as a 5A team, played a multiple d system from 3-3,3-4, and 4-2 with same personnel just different looks #swarmfbchat
A4: unfortunately, not off-season interaction for the youth level. But actually had some other teams film this year helped. Took time to slow down at practice and recognize formations and play tendencies. Gave us more interaction and aware players on game day.
#swarmfbchat
A5 For first time in forever didnt have 1 guy who dominated on defense and led in tackles by wide margin. Didnt have a single 100 tackle player, Had 3 of 4 guys close to each other and really felt like it was a "TEAM DEFENSE" this year. #swarmfbchat
A5: On JV we finished 6th out of 24 teams in our county in scoring defense. On Varsity, we finished second in the county in scoring defense out of 25 teams. (Everything in MD is by the county) We run a 3-4 defense. #swarmfbchat
Chip Kelly: "I think the coaches that are the best, really what they do is make the simple seem complex to their opponents, but they make the complex seem very simple to their own teams."
A5 part 2 Also had 2 seniors who missed all of last year come back strong and be big parts of our success both were All Conf players. Had 6 All Conf defensive players. Solid year #swarmfbchat
Coaches - you kept me quite busy tonight! Hope you took something away from our chat. I appreciate you tuning in and participating. We will see you next Tuesday night #swarmfbchat
