The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
A1 I think it was 1993.... I'd have to check my resume... My one word for that year was "Awesome!" It was a fun year, lots of support, great kids, and quality school district. #edchatPH
I was a new teacher in December of 2005. I was a Dec. graduate, so I took over a position mid-year in middle school. I never thought I would teach middle school; then I fell in love with it! My word is MAGICAL. ๐ #edchatph

A1 there were 4 of us newbies, they each found their own clique leaving me alone. Barely any support and my co-workers didnโt really mentor me at all. I was in trouble all the time. In short, my beliefs and ideas were not in synch. #edchatPH
I wish I could answer that question since there isn't much of a crowd here! I am not a teacher. But I do communications related to education. And come from a family with a long history of education. A niece just had her first week of teaching. So I don't have one word! #EdChatPH
It was. I was an intern so I had my own class but my master teacher was across the way for anything I needed, my university supervisor and admin would observe & help, etc. #EdchatPH
There was a lack of support and mentoring from fellow newbies and experienced teachers. My ideas and philosophy werenโt in sync.
Hence I was not renewed after a year #edchatPH
Veteran teachers and office staff tend to forget that new teachers aren't acclimated to the site and don't have that 'sixth sense' yet...they need to know how to use the copier, find the bathroom, where the coffee is, what the rules and culture are, etc. Support is key. #edchatPH
That can be a blessing in disguise...finding the right site and team may take a few years and a few moves. It also takes a few years to find your style too. #edchatPH#newteacherjourney
A2 We should be asking the new teacher, "What can I help you with? Would you like to chat and throw around some ideas? Troubleshoot? Pick my brain?" #edchatPH#newteacherjourney

A2 how can I support you? What are your highs and lows? What change do you want to do this year? What are you passionate about and how can you integrate that with your teaching? #edchatph
It definitely is. In as much I still have bitter memories and feelings, I would always tell myself, if you did not leave or weโre asked to leave you wouldnโt have learned this or achieved this. #edchatPH
I think this is a main reason why Twitter is so valuable. For any teacher - new and veteran, the edu-twitter community is welcoming and one of sharing of ideas and resources too. I find that I can maintain my idealism here for sure. #edchatPH#newteacherjourney
A2: I actually think "How are you doing?" can be a great opening question. The key is to then genuinely LISTEN to the response AND follow up with more specific questions if needed. Is there anything you're still wondering about? What's going well? What can I do to help? #edchatph
A2: Hi all! We shouldn't be asking them anything specifically but supporting them. From an emergency guide to situations, to lots of random acts of kindness...new teachers need positivity to flourish. Love them and be the support you needed your first year.โค๏ธ #edchatPH
My friend and fellow educator @CoriOrlando1 calls these experiences #FailForward moments. How else would we learn except through our mistakes, trials, slip ups, and brick walls? #edchatPH
Here in Hong Kong we are starting an Early Professional Years group for all teachers new to teaching.
Can you guys suggest some sessions we should run? And in what format TIA.
#edchatPH#edchat
We have several brand new teachers this year! #edchatPH I've been sending them a Google Form on Fridays asking them what their needs are. Starting a New Teacher PLC next week!๐๐๐
Well, it should be administrator and evaluative free.... or else your new teachers will not feel comfortable or safe expressing their feelings and needs. I suggest using peer coaches to facilitate. #edchatPH
How we can help them....remind them that we were all there once and had mentors and help. As we become veteran teachers it is important to give back. Support, encourage, build up. #edchatph
A3 Not all stress is bad, first of all. I find it a great motivator to get "stuff' done. But there must be time for fun! Many new teachers are short on time and money so a bubble bath, good book, beach time, or a nap work well (dare I say a happy hour with friends too?) #edchatPH
Tell them what they are succeeded at; things you've noticed about their teaching that they may not be able to see. Nothing combats stress like a feeling of accomplishment. Share the love!
#edchatPH
A3: Let them know they are enough. Stop glorifying busy. Self-care is essential. A work-life balance is, too. Share with them routines, etc. that help you accomplish your why while still taking care of yourself...and then see how they might personalize them. #edchatph
A3: My goal is to support and encourage them through the New Teacher PLC. However I don't want to pile more stress on by requiring another meeting. Hopefully they will participate and be there for each other. ๐๐ป๐๐ป๐๐ป #edchatPH
New Ts are experiencing a wide range of emotion this time of year. Excitement, stress, uncertainty, anticipation, hope, commitment. Veteran Ts and Admin can validate these feelings by letting them know that ALL staff are feeling the same and they are not alone. Simple reassurance
Peer coaching isn't necessarily related to content. I'd focus on the idea that whoever the PC is, that s/he be capable of reserving judgment to help new Ts discover answers to their own Qs & how to address their own needs. Otherwise the PC becomes an instructional coach #edchatPH
A3 - We have put our Early Professional Years meetings within our scheduled timetables, and not after school, in an attempt to not make them feel as something extra and time consuming. #edchatPH#edchat
Education must be a partnership. While teachers might be the center of the student's universe in school, they are one link in building a positive educational experience. Make it clear by word and deed that teachers are not in this alone. #EdChatPH A3
Want to combat new teacher burnout? Conduct a @voxer support group exclusive to new teachers within a department, school, district, etc. Have it led by an admin or mentor who poses guiding questions for new teachers to reflect and respond to. A quick and easy support network!
New teachers also need to listen to criticism they receive without being resentful. Mind you it should be constructive criticism. Listen, think it over, revise, try again. Nothing impresses admin more than a teacher who can learn a lesson themselves! #edchatPH#newteacherjourney
A3 donโt be afraid to experience the difficulties of teaching (difficult parents, difficult students, difficult expectations). Donโt be afraid to fail. #edchatph
Yes! ๐๐ What a tangible way to show them that you value them and their time. (As long as it's not taken from their prep time, of courseโthat has to be honored, too). #edchatph
A3: Let them know they are enough. Stop glorifying busy. Self-care is essential. A work-life balance is, too. Share with them routines, etc. that help you accomplish your why while still taking care of yourself...and then see how they might personalize them. #edchatph
When they get to worry about deadlines I tell them, do it tomorrow. I'd rather you meet your students first and be with them as a teacher than worry about paperwork. #edchatPH
A3: Stress is part and parcel of a new teacher experience. There are ways that we can help them, but these helps should be holistic. Let's support them morally, mentally, professionally, and the like. #EdChatPH#EdSharePH
I'll see what I can scare up for you in a bit for sure! You're in Hong Kong? I'd refer you to my Peer Coach trainer but we're in California..... #EdchatPH
A3) by letting them become aware that itโs a learning journey for all. I learn a lot via Twitter through othersโ experiences. bringing new Ts on to Twitter for networking, support and learning with other Ts outside school environment can be beneficial too #edchatph
That's what I try to build. Many are not used to it and are sometimes skeptical. But I will continue to assist. I am not a teacher-evaluator. I am a teacher-activator. #edchatPH And of course TEN does it.
Totally agree. Reality Check: There are some seasoned teachers who feel threatened to new teachers. They looked down new teacher capacities. I really agree that we should show positivity to them. #EdSharePH#EdChatPH
A2: We can also ask questions to them depending on the situation. As a seasoned teachers, we must empathize to them. Allow ourselves to be bench marked by them. #EdChatPH#EdSHarePH
That's one of my struggles in my first years of teaching. As a new teacher, I didn't mind it. I just keep myself be influenced by empathetic seasoned teachers. #EdChatPH#EdSharePH
Let me look at my peer coaching info from the gal who trained me...it is her work so I want to do this properly. Here are some reads on my shelf to start...not my faves but I need to do some digging... #edchatPH
