Super excited to be included with this amazing group of educators from around the world who have been nominated as educators to follow on Twitter in 2018!!! Thanks #ukedchat ! #aussieED#ausflipchat#tlap
A1. Good subject knowledge is essential as it is for all aspects of teaching. As a trainee I recall being told by my tutor that in order to teach grammar well we needed an explicit rather than implicit knowledge & understanding. I believed it then, I believe it now. #UKEdChat
We've hired radios to a range of different users. We also supply two way radios for schools and colleges? #ukedchat
All your staff can benefit from radios. Even if it's just for an open day.

Would say that most are less confident in one area or another. Issues need to be worked out together. What action should be taken if there is an impact on teaching? #ukedchat

A3. As with so much in schools, improvement comes better, stronger, faster and is more sustainable when there is complete ownership and responsibility from all partners (leaders, teachers, named co-ordinators, support staff, pupils and parents.) #UKEdChat
I think it’s important to have a working knowledge of it, but most important to have knowledge in context in order to be able to explain to students in appropriate manner and not as an abstract concept with a list of grammar terms #ukedchat
#a2#ukedchat Try a SATS paper in staff meeting. Go over answers. Ask for feedback on areas of real need. Teachers should have ability to training staff rather than sending them on a course.
A3 I think support from a whole school literacy leader is important who helps to@share good practice. However, it falls down to the teachers themselves too! I embed spelling tests, literacy mats for spelling struggle. #UKEdChat
A3) It does need to be everyone. To be really effective you need liaison between departments and English team to ensure everyone teaches the concept/marks literacy in the same way. Then have subject specific literacy focus as well. #ukedchat
A2 #ukedchat remind them that it’s ok to make mistakes, just the same as pupils. My relationship has become much stronger with Ss now that I’m honest with them about my own SPaG gaps! Nobody is perfect, we’re all on a learning journey!

A3) Also often need time as staff to learn the correct grammar and spellings! Especially for new grammar concepts most of us weren’t taught at school. It makes me cringe when I see poor SPaG from teachers in class (and on social media too often ha!) #ukedchat
I asked students to identify AOs, the keyword in the question being referred back to and any impressive/useful words and phrases. This is my model. Worked a treat as a visual way of engaging with the mark scheme and spotting what was missing. #ukedchat#engchatik#TeamEnglish

In the first instance, the subject specialists who then, through collaboration, can equip others with knowledge & understanding. So important that we have the TIME to share the expertise/strengths of the staff we have in our schools (whether they’re leaders or not) #UKedchat#a3
Me too! Love a good literacy resource. I know others have recommended Spell Friendzy before (irony of mixed spelling for a name lol!) and Alpha Writer (which says sounds aloud to help I believe). Depends on age & phase of students you would want it for. #ukedchat A4

A2 Refer them to useful resources that will develop their own subject knowledge. As with any area of teaching we lack confidence in, it's important to make sure you have secure subject knowledge before trying to teach something #UKEdChat
A5: maintain and challenge. Make sure they retain all of those skills but look at showing them lots of texts so they understand how to use their skills in different ways #ukedchat
There are always more words and more exciting or challenging words to learn! Raise the bar. Set more challenging text. Give GCSE resources to yr7, A Level resources to yr 10, etc. Use them as SPaG ninjas to help others either in class or during intervention sessions #ukedchat A5
A5. Exposure to a wide range of texts, genres, opportunities for purposeful writing. Keep pushing and challenging - don’t fall into the trap of thinking “job done.” #UKEdChat
A5. Ask such pupils to model it to less proficient children / younger children. Lots of possible contexts and ways of doing this - and peer led T&L is very powerful. It also gives purpose and reason to those children mastering #SPaG#UKEdChat
In staff meetings we looked at SPaG expectations for different year groups. SPaG is important for children to be assessed as being at age related expectations. Working with different year groups to look at progression in SPaG also helped staff get the overall picture. #UKEdChat

“Sustaining effort” is a vital habit / characteristic of an effective learner. It’s part of a core of learning habits in my school curriculum. #SPaG would be found in the green strand of my curriculum on my model. #UKEdChat
The real art, especially once proficient in SPAG, is the applic to writing. Using/selecting/manipulating grammatical conventions for effect on reader. Crafting writing in this way comes from lots of exposure to high quality literature & unpicking authorial technique #UKedchat#A5
#UKEdChat A5 as with all students I think it is particularly important to consider the why and how of writing choices. How can SPaG be adapted for different forms and audiences?
They found tenses quite straightforward, use of ? and full stops. After learning about apostrophes for contractions some chn started using them incorrectly for plurals e.g. There were two cat's. #UKEdChat
