WOO HOO ! I'm Laura from Kansas City. Instructional Coach at Turner HS! Ready to rumble with this fabulous .
A1: By continually asking the question - why are we doing that? (hoping not to hear "that's the way we've always done it")
It's a pretty great state!
love it when this guy hops in !
Always love learning from Ohio leaders! Heather Abney, HS principal from VA.
yippee!!! Excited to "see" you!! Really loved your handbook!!
I think we first need to help other recognize that the change needs to happen.
A1: I've often wondered about offering "majors" in HS to begin having Ss think abouttheir interests as pathways.
Checkin in from Gahanna,Oh. HS asst principal. Will be in & out a bit
A1 Have to first build the capacity of all stakeholders. Talk about what will stay the same and then what will change.
A1: We have to challenge the process! We can't lead or follow blindly!
A1: must take a look at our communities. Our communities are no longer solely based on agriculture and industry sectors
A1: Big question. I suppose the first thing to do is determine what we are moving TOWARD. What is school for?
A1: We gotta quit saying, "That's how we've always done it" & be willing to take risks for our Ss & their future!
A1 Have Ss demonstrate what is possible when they are allowed to learn in non-traditional ways. They are the best to showcase.
A1: find those rock stars to share w/others their journey in changing mindsets & behaviors
You're so kind! I appreciate you! https://t.co/t6YkLlEsZv
yippee!!! Excited to "see" you!! Really loved your handbook!!
A1: Change isn't a four letter word, but sometimes your reaction to it is.
RT Q1: How can we change the educational mindset to knock down the "Industrial Age" methods of instruction?
https://t.co/ntiqqE7cMs
A1: We gotta quit saying, "That's how we've always done it" & be willing to take risks for our Ss & their future!
A1: We need to question, challenge and begin with small changes. Baby steps but its necessary.
Funny how some people haven't realized our reaction is what we control!
A1: Cathy, ms science from Chicago, By offering current and relevant PD, encouraging T collaboration and expanding your PLN!
A1 show the Ss, Ts videos of robots completing menial tasks to think about skills needed for the future
A1. I like the idea of having the superstar teachers share ideas and strategies at faculty mtgs.
A1: Provide lots of options to Ts and Ss. Give "missions" based on interest
A1: Oh how I wish there was a magic answer! Need to keep sharing. We can't accept "it's worked this way for X long" anymore.
A1 keep hitting them with radical ideas that are simply good for kids (5 C's)...
A1: Using employers within the community to convince stakeholders that they need innovative employees who think differently.
A1 break away from desks, chairs, books....get standing units and use technology https://t.co/1p867qB9M6
Q1: How can we change the educational mindset to knock down the "Industrial Age" methods of instruction https://t.co/1CH11mkbeR
great point! As times change, we have an inherent responsibility to evolve & meet our Ss where they are!
A1 A lot of jobs ourelementary students will do are not even invented yet!
Thanks for being here Char. We appreciate your insight
A1: Continuing to ask why we are doing what we are doing. We must all be willing to reflect on our practices.
A1: connected opportunities between the materials, 'end game', & the Ss we have. Help them see value, as well as forging new paths
but sometimes that's a good answer. Tweet from an old guy
A1: Could show more efficient/engaging ways of teaching Ss. Explain how it's better. Make it relevant to age/content.
A1 changing of school start/end times, move from graduating to next grade to amorphous moving to next learning target
Ask ourselves, how is this best for the students? Let students lead, learn from them.
A1: We need to remove biased blinders, take a step back&ask what is the experience we are trying to create?
Hi ! HS English, Lindsay from Hilliard checking in ☺️
A1: you shift focus from when you teach the student not the content!
Thanks for being here! You should jump in! Where is
A1 Think leaders need to be transparent about THEIR learning, changes of paradigms, willingness to risk, growth
A1 First step is realization that we can help each other. Silos can't collaborate. Together we can effect powerful change.
A1: Model it in our own classrooms, share the successes & challenges & solutions to the problems along the way.
Great thought. Definitely have to continual to question and reflect to make sure we're heading in right direction
A1: People must know that mindsets can be changed first of all, then share benefits of change for Ss, & take steps towards change.
Great to see you again Chad
A1: Ts need to connect w/others on social media, visit other classrooms, see what's possible. "We don't know what we don't know"
A1: We need to make changes that show results. Experiential learning. Change our calendar. Exude hope for our students' futures.
A1: You change mindsets by doing what's right for Ss and showing your passion in doing so!
A1 change the assembly line mindset of being masters of content, instead become masters of instruction
agreed. What are your thoughts in terms of this questions/idea and working with such a wide range of kids?
A1. As a P, my daily actions and demonstrating instructional leadership by building climate of innovation
We envision them working through pathways in chunks of about 10-20 hrs learning. https://t.co/nLgOJQnmut
A1: I've often wondered about offering "majors" in HS to begin having Ss think abouttheir interests as pathways.
Thanks for joining Kristine!
A1 also starts with rethinking school day and year
A1: Ts and passers-by the bulletin board should not be the only ones who see student work
Congrats on the new position, Spencer!
A1: keep pushing Ts to try new things, praise the adventurous spirit encourage risk taking w/lessons all while providing support
A1: When focus is on figuring out next steps to learning vs making sure you get to the end of the textbook
Great to have you as always Ray
A1: Imagine each new day at your school was an EdCamp with Ss and Ts offering to lead & attend sessions...
A1: Use good teaching and let the Ss be the ones to advocate for what works.
You are the real deal, Neil Gupta. Your energy, genius/brilliance, humor-- off the charts!
follow blindly, one might say, like an alien? 👽
Thanks for joining Josh! Come back every week! Great PD all year
Experience vs score/grade
A1: Love this, Sandy! Must do's. https://t.co/KTu6QG2hqN
A1 Think leaders need to be transparent about THEIR learning, changes of paradigms, willingness to risk, growth
A1: Ask- How might we, what if, yes and. Remove all CYBOs (Chief Yeah Butt Officers). Empower Ss & Ts!
Just tryin' to get you connected with the BEST!
and very soon his and weight room game will be added to this list https://t.co/ZXoo2H8C02
You are the real deal, Neil Gupta. Your energy, genius/brilliance, humor-- off the charts!
Can't have too many Dodd's in the house! Double the awesome.
Indiana Writing Project: Choose one unit to change each year. Choose 1 change for the wk, mnth, yr. It adds up.
I'd love to see what designs we'd come up w if we could forget almost everything we know ab edu & create new system frm ground up
My long lost Twitter buddy!! Good to be in with you!!!
Thanks for joining Laura! Really getting some All-Stars tonight on
Yes! We must model what we want to see!
this can include not being assigned a textbook.... https://t.co/TdcCaA5558
A1: When focus is on figuring out next steps to learning vs making sure you get to the end of the textbook
A1:really need to challenge old was of thinking. If a T or admin can't defend a practice, probably should be changed for the better
A1: We need to look at how students grow and let our methods grow with them. Never teach the same lesson twice!
glad to be here little trauma today, all good
A1 keep talking about learning and love of learning..publish instances of awesome learning by Ss
yep. Have to embrace all facets of the process though
A1: Encourage & support risk taking, listen to ideas, get rid of "no" mentality
A1: We need our state leaders to stop backing assessments that keep us stuck in that industrial mindset
So much focus is on Ts changing (do have greatest impact) but "leaders" need to change too! (and show it)
**** Q2 is up in one minute ******
A1-We've got to engage the comm in convos about learning-help them understand that school needs to look diff
A1 Our students need to have choices when they walk out of our doors!
I think this is crucial. Without this environment we're likely to maintain status quo & mediocre is acceptable
A1: eliminate constriants: period bells, start/stop time, classes specific to one core area.
. We ask for Ss voice in what we've already created, what if we flip that? Imagine true choice in learning progression
Agree! and yet why are there so many "leaders" NOT reading, connected, learning from others etc. MYSTERY!
I think this can be the scariest aspect for some of us, sometimes.
A1:Have a serious discussion about the tenure system.
what if students got to choose what they wanted to learn each day...
A1 help students find a passion and then let them learn through that passion whether it's technology, social activism etc
agreed! Some communities are struggling due to too much reliance on 1 sector. Stakeholders need to combine efforts
Q2: How are you changing education using innovation & creativity?
Our co-moderators tonight have ideas! https://t.co/sfLBBSTmxH
Great point. Really empowers Ss. How do we get communities to believe in
A1 By offering tech tools such as , learning and creativity can be captured & shared w others beyond the classroom walls
! And if government/politicians/budgets were not dictating https://t.co/DexpWWl5mm
I'd love to see what designs we'd come up w if we could forget almost everything we know ab edu & create new system frm ground up
Both & PLNs use . They know good thing when they see it. All resources & tweets! https://t.co/c2cudtwJoc
Thanks to Participate Learning for archiving our awesome conversations!
A1 Begin w/own rm based on prior discussion & feedback frm Ss; see where they want 2b challenged 2 go &help move 2 that direction
A1: focus on student interests and remembering that "this is how we have always done it" is a dangerous phrase in education
Absolutely! The backing of assessments to validate decision(s) is hurting education! https://t.co/TeE2NonwqZ
A1: We need our state leaders to stop backing assessments that keep us stuck in that industrial mindset
A1: focus on the 4 Cs at a global level and move away from traditional, rote memorization and regurgitation of facts.
we learn so much by listening 1st, enables us to ask more informed, targeted Q's
Sounds like a page straight out of 's Creative Schools. Love it!
Interesting. Does that create too narrow of a path for Ss that age?
A1: find the elite in your building and have them bring the others along!
A2: We need to create authentic audiences...make learning real
Don't forget what we know... Use what we know. We already know what works. We just don't do it.
Ohio has the legal capacity to do this. If we band together, ask teens across the state, iterate designs. https://t.co/QyjtbvhawQ
I'd love to see what designs we'd come up w if we could forget almost everything we know ab edu & create new system frm ground up
A1: We're in the era of ideas and creativity, not just production. Can we create an environment that encourages dynamic thinking?
A1 we have to be persistent. And welcome the culture and new ideas from our students
A2: trying to bring new examples to class Ss may have never seen before like aquaponics in the classroom.
I like it. The real question is: Who has stuff that stays? What does it look like?
Following student lead, letting them lead is so important in moving forward!
A2: I used an augmented reality app called this year to teach students about propaganda before reading Orwell's 1984.
this grates on me: we all know the research, yet we implement it sparingly. Too much fear https://t.co/Y5OSR8xxMr
Don't forget what we know... Use what we know. We already know what works. We just don't do it.
do love him...haven't read his book yet, on my pile!
A2. As a P, I try to push teachers to jump in feet first to take instructional risks. Try to champion their mindset
Must find ways to let Ss work with & towards their passions, while also ensuring they see their passions as valid
A2 It starts with learning SPACES- mindsets, and soliciting the ideas of kids! Kids get it!
A2 Design Thinking is a protocol we use to have students solve problems on and off campus.
A2 combine classroom learning with real world passions. I'm trying introduce something called 20 Time.
culture, by and late should drive education. The tail should never wag the dog 🐶
. A2. By empowering my students to lead discussions, design thinking, and maker projects.
A2: Sharing . Such powerful learning & growth through student-selected, student-driven projects.
I love the listening piece. Told via how important it is to ask Q's to learn
A2: I support Ts to try new things. I had three try last year and it was awesome!
moving from production to process is what started UBD and design thinking https://t.co/NOu2ef2uc8
A1: We're in the era of ideas and creativity, not just production. Can we create an environment that encourages dynamic thinking?
A2-We are adding a 4th special this yr called "Discovery" it will have a STEM focus in the hopes of influences Ts to apply lessons
He actually narrates that audiobook- it was a good listen!
A2: Student led decamp periods, makerspaces, ungraded courses, personalized LMS - all “originals” to grow.
A2 I think I am using my gut feelings and the feedback I get from my students. I would love to be more intentional with this.
a2 ppl talk about wanting creativity/innovation but are afraid of it because it is so different-"what will our community think"
This is something I want to work on. Incorporate career goals more, even wit 6th graders.
as part of his participation with Neil is going to add Sunday weight room work to his game.
Hi , sorry to be late. Got these sweet tix in the mail today... Hoping a few OH friends will visit 10/22 https://t.co/A0zOH2cL21
A2: we are encouraging our student leaders. Student ran leadership and service committees. Student council operated assemblies
Ss had to attend four classes today. 1of the four could be a flex subject reflecting their interests.
we've overhyped the speaking part of speaking/listening, devalues the Ss who truly listen, then respond https://t.co/5KqxldYnAV
I love the listening piece. Told via how important it is to ask Q's to learn
About to start year 3 of . It's awesome. Very powerful.
A2 I see strategies such as inquiry, PBL, Makerspace, genius hour, etc playing major role in encouraging creativity and production
A2: My message to my Ts this year is that we have to move from consumption to creation. Move away from copying and memorization.
Jumping in to check out the tweets tonight! Jenny from Toledo.
yep. Lot to be done between now & then for coaching and especially school
is now trending in USA, ranking 43
I agree. Start times are huge. How about building in collaboration time for Ts?
I'm with you! Please move past that and mindless worksheets/worksheet packets UGH!!!
Credit-flex learning has no daily start time, can be all competency-based, micro.credentialed. https://t.co/Qg0yvMxJdc
A1 changing of school start/end times, move from graduating to next grade to amorphous moving to next learning target
could you explain 20 time please!
We are trying to help teachers understand this process and allow them to innovate and create things. https://t.co/mvTS9hq9UZ
Q2: How are you changing education using innovation & creativity?
Our co-moderators tonight have ideas! https://t.co/sfLBBSTmxH
A2-we are adding a day each wk in which Ss choose their classes based on interest-Ts offer 6 week courses-Ss choose IN ELEM SCHOOL
Absolutely carry over best practices & strategies that work... I just think it would be a great exercise to compare
A2: I would like to incorporate S choice into projects. S can write essay, draw diagram, build a prototype, etc.
exactly. If they perceive value & the end game they will attack with extreme passion
A2: When is last time Ss had choice? Why do we continue to lie about Ss Centered when it’s really “adult centered”?
A2: Have authentic learning ops. Solar-thermal school. Working Business Academy. Students plant soy and corn and study results.
A2 digital option, Global Scholars Diploma allows CHOICE!
A2: I believe in using practical, real-life approach. "What does this mean to you?"& "How does this have an impact on you?"
That's where I was going with it :)
Start with connecting with the community and seeing what skills we need. As well as getting them into our schools.
p1. Invite the school community to view the variety and quality of student work that results when given
how about starting the day with it? Ss don't need to come in early, learning can be done at all hours
Glenn's got it and can show evidence of walk the talk- Check out what kids do! https://t.co/yqjcYVs5L4
A2: Student led decamp periods, makerspaces, ungraded courses, personalized LMS - all “originals” to grow.
A2: Giving students ownership in the process and allowing them to base learning on their interests/teach to others
A2: educators should understand & follow principles of where Ss have a voice in their learning
We could find room for you, Sandy!
Aloha Joe! Glad you could jump in. Might get a little rowdy up in here discussing pigskin.
A2 my AP and I are going to do a PBL of our own this school year. Ss have a lot of voice & choice
Jumping in tonight to try and new chat & diversify my
Hello First time to this chat. TY for the invite.
A2: I used augmented reality this year to teach Ss about propaganda. We did a scavenger hunt around school using smartphones.
A2: creating large learning spaces, mobile furniture, interactive technology, inspire small group, S led learning
A2: trying to flip my classes...we have a second chrome book cart...talking maker space. Listening to Ss and their choices!
A2:as admin, encourage Ts to assess Ss on what they are learning, either verbally, writing or through creating. Not multiple choice
A2: Genius Hour, Passion Projects, 20% time - Create a Creative Culture
and I had a great phone convo on this just last week https://t.co/2HlGGb4njQ
A2 It starts with learning SPACES- mindsets, and soliciting the ideas of kids! Kids get it!
Some day I'll get to have a meet up.....some day!!!
I keep telling my team - I'm going to ask this so be ready to be annoyed.
p2. I've been to too many showcases where the entire class did the same thing 😴
maybe HS need more elective/independent learning credit ops? Kind of genius hour on a semester level
So great that you are here! You definitely need to share your greatness! https://t.co/AuiPmDYMZd
Hello First time to this chat. TY for the invite.
Global Scholars - solid answer. I hear about it from
How are we establishing (by our own practice) an Innovations Lab culture in schools? We're all makers, no? Let's be OK with BETA
Would very much like more info!! https://t.co/368qix1Ulb
A2-we are adding a day each wk in which Ss choose their classes based on interest-Ts offer 6 week courses-Ss choose IN ELEM SCHOOL
It can be done - we have to probe student thinking with the why to push deeper level thinking
A2 We have to start by giving Ss multiple ways to show learning!
Oh my head...my cell can not handle 3 interesting chats at once
PS: sorry I'm late. I'll be hanging out for a bit! Good to be back!
1/5 of class time given to student passion projects of individual or small team choosing
Love it! If more HS had - attendance would go up, drop outs down https://t.co/S2RgAcjwpw
maybe HS need more elective/independent learning credit ops? Kind of genius hour on a semester level
and with so many Ts trying it, maybe we're overdoing the genius hour. But I like the idea of more flex options!
A2 we're looking to leverage all potential partnerships w/edu orgs and connect w/Ts who have those interests
A2: Also have collaboration time for teachers and mandatory intervention for students. Focus on learning and building S efficacy.
Jumping in late! A2: passion projects are great. Students put so much into something that is their idea and creation!
A2: I hear does great things in his building to allow for creativity & innovation
A2) [2 of 2] and Process is using Creative-and-Critical Thinking to Generate-and-Evaluate Ideas.
Good point. I would hope growth for all.
I'm kinda pumped for my 2nd run with this year. wrote an outstanding text about it
I want ppl to see that what they think is impossible is BEING DONE right now, this minute! :)
A2: Always encourage don't say it can't be done! My 4th graders found ways to integrate Keynote w/ iMovie in ways I only imagined!
"but what curriculum standards are you meeting?"
School libraries and librarians can be great partners in this! https://t.co/OT2s6R4jsK
A2 It starts with learning SPACES- mindsets, and soliciting the ideas of kids! Kids get it!
the WHY is so key, and also making sure it isn't just being paid lip service
A2: Hosting clubs during lunch/indoor recess/common room
****** Q3 is up in one minute ******
A2 Ts inquiry and learning will drive Ss learning, when our Ts are empowered, excited, so are our younger Ss
Aloha Talesha. Thanks for jumping in!
A2 Provide resources for students to chose from to show their work & show their thinking. Learning is creation, not consumption.
A2: Consider adding in a purposeful collaboration time for Ss & Ts
A2- Ts HAVE to be given time to practice & implement , & they have to REALLY be able to try new things w/o fear of evals
we "were" all makers until it was schooled out of us...get back to it https://t.co/bQngxMnUWY
How are we establishing (by our own practice) an Innovations Lab culture in schools? We're all makers, no? Let's be OK with BETA
Also more challenging to assess.
Q3: How do you empower Ss to use tech to be empathetic or entrepreneurial w/ their thoughts & ideas? https://t.co/2rr7Lpx8nz
A3. Using to springboard school partnership in teaching the power of coding to grades 3-5. Ss teaching Ss.
A2: let Ss teach some of the EdCamp sessions and Ts attend!
https://t.co/6eygkoUiaD
A2 Ts inquiry and learning will drive Ss learning, when our Ts are empowered, excited, so are our younger Ss
This is a MUST follow, friends! https://t.co/lr5yV0CLw8
A2: Also have collaboration time for teachers and mandatory intervention for students. Focus on learning and building S efficacy.
20% should be minimum for teens. Closer to 60% for many seniors. https://t.co/1DPTXTRNrp
A2: Genius Hour, Passion Projects, 20% time - Create a Creative Culture
As long as intervention also builds for enrichment for Ss who don't need intervention
A2 I think allowing creative failure could greatly help students. Let them see their mistakes and problem solve their way out
A2 risky w/language due to explosive gram, but Ss generate what they would like to discuss w/topics like school, clothes, food
Empowering for your students! It's great they have this opp to learn and develop skills this way! https://t.co/lVxqBDqRKg
A2 Design Thinking is a protocol we use to have students solve problems on and off campus.
. Yes! Let's motivate to educate!
I think is posting the questions.
I like when evals focus on reflection as much as on success. Encouraging reflective practices encourages growth
does what he does normally, and people look at it as unconventional. He is a lifelong student https://t.co/axrjJSE5se
A2: I hear does great things in his building to allow for creativity & innovation
Must see both results of their ideas AND understand the ideas of thinking more broadley...local to state to US to world
Yes! I'm def. in beta but that's where the fun is- learning WITH kiddos https://t.co/H9GdegTWAQ
How are we establishing (by our own practice) an Innovations Lab culture in schools? We're all makers, no? Let's be OK with BETA
A2: Ss selecting projects that they insert their area of interest. More meaningful = better engagement
A1: said this 2a L coach in June and she told me that..."that's an outdated/non-relevant mindset" https://t.co/pEtC4CDcIz
A1: you shift focus from when you teach the student not the content!
I have been reading A More Beautiful Question by Warren Berger
infused with modeling - great thought!

I am jealous of that challenge!
A6 my school would focus on thinking and not disciplines. Do away with departments, in favor of letting great minds collide.
