Jack Dingus, Offensive Line Coach at Shawnee High School in Shawnee, Oklahoma I am the Co-Founder and Co-Host of the Monday Night #hogfbchat along side @CoachShiffman
Mathew Bennett, OL coach/Run Game Coordinator at Woodmont high school in Greenville, South Carolina. Glad to be here to learn from some great coaches! #hogfbchat
HSSocialMedia : RT CoachDingus: Coaches! It's time to for Check-ins even if you lurk please check in. Tell us who you are and where you coach. Lets see some awesome gifs! #hogfbchat
A1: Take two short hops back, on the second hop your feet are dug into the ground. Here I emphasize having a good base right off the bat. That’s why we emphasize a good base in our stance #hogfbchat
A1: I teach the Snatch and Trap vs both the long arm and bull rush. I made a YouTube video on it a while back. Check it out! https://t.co/HGxxCatSbY#Hogfbchat
A1) We can too in MA! Put me down for this answer as well. Also like to redirect momentum to take on 1/2 man so not absorbing 100% of bullrush #Hogfbchat
A1: break and replace. We have to win the hand fight. Starts with using your length to keep them off you, it they get the long stick to you, break it with closest hand, and get back to a good fighting position. #Hogfbchat
Settle hips, chop arms, get cleats in the ground. See the kid, and simulate it the best we can all week. Mix in cut at the snap (all we can do in Iowa). #Hogfbchat
A1: To stop straight bull rush kids are taught to drop their hips, shoot hands and walk back slow with arms extended. When coming with long arm, sweep the elbow with one hand and place other hand on chest. Then replace chop hand. Same rules for feet. #Hogfbchat
A1) making sure they’ve created space on their set which allows more time to recognize the arm. Efficient serve/knee to crotch relationship. Ensuring the elbow/hips are married so they can maximize force through the ground in order to anchor. #hogfbchat
I had a lot of people ask about my post on the Snatch and Trap Offensive line technique last week so I decided to make an in-depth overview of the technique itself. Let me know what you think! #hogfchat#SorryDL#OLbrotherhoodhttps://t.co/YYDOfFekPG
A1: If we feel weight (DL leaning) and he's locked out, he's over his toes so CHOP down or up and put him on his face. If his arms bent and he's coming, DROP Hips on reset and PUNCH up targeting chest/sternum. #SutrOline ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat Teach them to be on the full edge of what will be their catch foot/leg of the drive catch. That way they can play from the inside edge to their mid foot and be the most effective. Kick step/slide is just bad for business
A1: stopping the long arm is litterally talked about in a really good @usafootball podcast from the other day!
7 minute marker has @CoachKGrabowski ask the question to Oklahoma's oline coach! #Hogfbchat
When it comes to grooming offensive line, #CoachandCoordinator podcast guest @OU_CoachB is one of the best in the business!
The @OU_Football Co-Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line coach breaks down blocking techniques including the Tip of the Spear.

A2: Whole foot on the ground with guys with good flexibilty in ankles. Teach kids to slant foot out if it is more comftorable for them to do to get whole foot down. More focused on how comftorable they are then what was good for me! #Hogfbchat
A2: I don’t mind if the staggered foot has a little air under the heel. It’s a comfort thing for some guys. I shouldn’t be able to fit my toes underneath it though. #hogfbchat
A2) Kick foot is on the upright on the "ball" of the foot. The step before contact we need to make sure foot is in the ground to have steady balance and power #hogfbchat
A2. We put the back foot or kick foot at 45 degrees. Allows us to put more force into the ground for the power step if a defender tried to cross our face. Driving off the mid foot provides more surface area for force through the ground. #HogFbChat
A2: whole foot in the ground. We try to work everything from a “powerful” position, and that’s when you’re most powerful, pushing off your foot rather than the toes. We are Run first. We don’t want to give anything away, so it’s easier just to get in the same stance #Hogfbchat
A2) I teach balls of the foot with the ankle off the ground but just barely, I want guys to be able to transition very quickly and I think athletes move on the balls of there feet. #hogfbchat
A2: Ankle flexion varies so much with these kids. Big fan of watching sets a couple days in 1 vs 1 and tweaking if need be. Awesome question Coach!!! Very thought provoking 🤔.
#Hogfbchat
A2. Slight staggered stance. Back foot front cleat (toe area) in the ground and rear cleat (heal area) just touching the surface of the ground. This allows for if a defender bulls you can dig in but also be ready to power step inside quick. #HOGFBCHAT
A2: back foot needs to have as many cleats in the ground as possible but comfortable. We try to keep the whole instep in the ground in stance. #Hogfbchat
A2: like to teach all cleats in the ground to generate force and good 1st steps good z in hips knees and ankles but comfort and effective mobility is key #hogfbchat
A2: I prefer a more balanced stance so I'll encourage as much foot in the found as possible. However, I'm sure a lot of coaches don't mind what the heel is doing if the athlete is functional and successful #Hogfbchat
A2) work the 3 45s (ankle, shin, thigh) learned from @OLPerformance along w/ the entire foot in the ground for the kickstand. Engage the adductors to help maximize FTTG from the mid foot and get ready to drive/catch. #hogfbchat
A3: both have their place, but I think a two hand punch that can shut down their best pass rusher on 3rd and long is a BEAUTIFUL thing to see. Locking him out with both hands. Have to love it #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat 2 is always better than 1. But players need to learn to use the hands independently also. So many factors determine which is best, and we should give the OL athletes the confidence to strike as needed in a given situation, be that 1 or 2 hands.
A2: IF they've been working hard on ankle flexion offseason ( 👁️C U #SutrOLine!) I want whole foot on ground. I feel more surface area in contact w/ground, more torque generated. Skill guys work on the balls of their ft. we work instep heel2toe ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A3: Two arm strikes. More power on the punch. The only way I teach one punch strike is ifs a double team or I have an ABSOLUTE dude at tackle #hogfbchat
A3 i like everything about one arm strikes on paper. Have had few players be able to generate enough power to neutralize a de with one hand though. I actually am drifting from kick and punch in 5 step game altogether. #Hogfbchat
A3. Again, lots of Wing T rules. I want 2 hands on as much as possible. At the high school level I have coached very few players strong enough and with good enough technique to strike with one.#hogfbchat
A3: two is always stronger than one, but unless he gives us chest, we will try to stay square and punch with one and have the inside hand ready to engage with an inside move. #hogfbchat
A1 if you create space and keep knee to crotch relationship you give yourself time to react. If you shift your weight and stab inside arm under his armpit you can run him by. Want to start learning more about snstch and trap. #Hogfbchat
A3: depends on the defender. If you’ve got a wide rusher you’re gonna want to work one hand strikes and if you’ve got a lumberer you’ll probably want to work the two hand strike. Best to have them both in that repertoire #hogfbchat
A3: I have not taught 1 arm strikes but I like them for tackles! I think I am gunna teach them to almost bait DE/OLB with a soft outside hand and have the inside hand ready to stop inside move or be able to wash the defender! Maybe just give it to tackles as tool #Hogfbchat
A3. Two is always better than one. Move your feet to get good position, and when the DE engages punch him through his chest plate with two hands! #HogFbChat
A1: hop-hop-chop... don't like to go past 2 hops whenever possible. This is also after trying to re-fit their hands. If you can't break the long arm, or re-fit, hop-hop-chop... then get up and find more work quickly. #Hogfbchat
GOOD EVENING, GENTS! Sorry I’m late. Was at the Cubs game, but booked it before the deluge happened. Coach Kevin Sabo. Varsity OL for @CHSFootball100 and owner of the best damn line company in Illinois! #FISTfootball#Hogfbchat
A3: I think it comes down to what your tackle can do and what the DEs ability is. Hand fighter/edge rusher, I tell em to throw a dummy punch to vary the aiming point for the DE. bull rusher/stunting DE, I want hands on to slow em down. #Hogfbchat
A3: I have coaches both, I think it depends on the player. Love independent hands, and how it allows oline to beat the second move quicker, some kids aren’t able to do so. #Hogfbchat
A2: back foot needs to have as many cleats in the ground as possible but comfortable. We try to keep the whole instep in the ground in stance. #Hogfbchat
A3. Double punch whenever possible. Maybe allow for single if we have outside help on the protection from a RB to allow tackle to focus for a blitz read from LB. #Hogfbchat
A3 strike with outside hand helps you stay square as long as possible. Save inside to counter inside move or for when you have to open your hips. #Hogfbchat
A3: I’ll start with question 3 and work my way back since I’m just getting on. I’m a fan of the one arm strike. It keeps the shoulders square to the line and allows the inside to be strong and ready for any inside move. #hogfbchat
A3: Independent hands is good using one and two hands depending on defenseive move. Good feet, head back and good chair position important also!! #hogfbchat
A3: Truth be told we work single arm and double arm punches. Have a couple of strike drills that involve both. But typically my Ts are primarily single arm punchers when in pass pro. Ya can’t lunge here! #Hogfbchat
A3. Honestly it depends on the skill level of ur tackle and the type of rush the DL gives you. If he is a skilled hand fighter. Use one arm strikes to set him up to attack the chest. But if he is a straight down the pipe guy or going inside. LOCK HIS BUTT OFF #Hogfbchat
A3: Depends on the objective/opponent. If we want to route DL outside, I teach hard, long hard inside arm punch while short arming outside - then run him. If we're stronger on the matchup, a 2-handed palm-heal strike is nasty effective. ⚒️🐗⚒️#hogfbchat
A3) depending on player skill & how well they use their feet - 2 arms.
Great video here with Joe Thomas talking arm striking points
https://t.co/8LxhfHXhYQ#hogfbchat
A3) independent hands. Hands should be an extension of your shoulder to maximize strength of the strike. In doing so it behooves the athlete to use each hand independently + if one hand is knocked down then the other hand can help recover. #hogfbchat
Have to deal with some new health issues today and tonight. Will be catching up later tonight. Love learning & networking with fellow Coaches! Be back next week! #hogfbchat
A3: I like to teach both, it depends on the skill of the OL and his strength/ability. I prefer one hand, keep inside locked and loaded for spin/re-direct across #HogFbChat
A1: knock his hand off and anchor. If the DE is able Bull rush with a long arm you need to get his hand off. If you can’t, that T best lock out and “flop his feet” back and regain his power in his hips. #hogfbchat
A3: we vertical set so 2 hand strikes are a nice thing we very rarely have. Take your kick steps and look to strike. Once you fit one, come with the other and finish #HOGFBCHAT
A3) Better be 2 hands for a straight rush. No DL better get by because we were too lazy to punish him man up. 1 of they stunt or try to fly to the side. #hogfbchat
A1) Hop, Hop, Pop.
Hop to get feet in the ground and reestablish a base w/ pad level. If you cant establish a base "pop" and turn it into a base block. Die for an inch. #hogfbchat
A4: Squats and cleans in the weight room! On the field I love having freshmen and even varsity kids to sit and hold a good stance and pass set. Have them strain to get low and focus of hip level! Have to teach them to be comftorable doing uncomftorable things! #Hogfbchat
A2: whole foot in the ground working the 3 45s. Weight in the mid foot/instep and engaging adductors to maximize #FTTG and ready for drive/catch. If it’s good enough for @OLPerformance is damn sure good enough for me. #hogfbchat
A4. Well, they are built from the ground up, so Squats, split squats, Dot drills, line drills, core work, stretching. That combo. You can’t go wrong. #HogFbChat
A4: cleans and squats in the weightroom. On the field I would say whatever your EDD’s are, because if they take those seriously, and they do them every day like they matter, they’ll be the kind of OL you want in your program. #HOGFBCHAT
That's where I am this year, not so much for RPO purposes, but I honestly can't take another winter of watching our OL stand up and just try to catch. (Taking the OL over this year).#Hogfbchat
[I'm assuming physical development] Depending on "young" definition, heavy sled marches and trap bar deadlifts. If you want to address explosive intent, timed sets of 5 reps (5 seconds) in the back squat are money & can reduce wear on big kids w/low stability skills #hogfbchat
A4: weight room; cleans and front squats, field; work to keep hips in proper position, and overall; get them to embrace the importance of playing offensive line. #hogfbchat
A1: create space on the initial set and maintain the proper knee to crutch relationship. This will help OL recognize what the DL is trying to set up. Then Ensure the elbow is married to the ribs and the whole foot is in the ground with adductors engaged to put #FTTG. #hogfbchat
A4; If young kids learn how to power clean properly that means that they are doing everything else! @JeremyKirt says it best! HIPS HIPS HIPS! #hogfbchat
agree with the unlocking of the hips Coach. Problem is not enough athletes unlock in favor of what interpretative dance move they can do to get under the bar and muscle the weight up. Have to a insanely strict on the rules when guys are doing cleans #hogfbchat
A4) while I don’t believe there is just one b/c off all the muscle groups employed by OLs, that said, I’ll choose squats. All the variations of squats. That’s in the weight room. On the field: STANCE. STANCE. STANCE. It’s a skill. #hogfbchat#StanceIsASkill
That's a wrap! The fastest hour on twitter is already over. Huge thanks to @LoganTillman for supplying the questions tonight! Please give him a follow and check out his content. Thank you all for participating tonight in the #hogfbchat#AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A4: Complex Shoulder routine from @BarwisMethods. 8 each - PwrHighPulls, PwrClns, PushPress, HngCleans, BentOverRows = 40 reps ttl. DO NOT put the bar down until done put the bar down, start set over. 3 sets. Try it. You learn a lot about an athlete. #mentaltoughness#hogfbchat
A4: Cleans, squats, different variation of squats, leg work I go all out with...on the field I do my EDD stuff. I stress stance and get off during conditioning. Stance for extended times followed by get off. Mind over matter. #HOGFBCHAT
A4: weight room I would say all of the squat variations (definitely Bulgarian Spilt Squats too). I’d also say neutral grip dumbbell bench. Start them light to get the technique, but I like it more than barbell bench. It mimics on field movement. On the field? Stance. #hogfbchat
We only have a few more Monday night chat sessions, so if anybody has any topics or questions that they want to have discussed on the chat, please do not hesitate to DM myself or @CoachDingus with those ideas! #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A2 honestly... All the stuff that the Charles Bentley teaches. But I don't get to talk about it very much because I'm more concerned about running all our schemes correctly and Reps for young kids Etc
We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/Ywj2bC07FP@GameStrat_#Hogfbchat
agreed and like I said earlier 2 is always better than 1. But they need multiple options & confidence in their application. Like wrestling: shoot a head outside single & it's defended I need to know what to do next #Hogfbchat
Great chat, any of you guys ever wanna talk shop just give me a holler on here or shoot me an email. Hope everyone is having a productive summer! #HOGFBCHAT
Agreed. But that second hand can be used as a second shot the DT wasn’t expecting if used independently. Strike with the outside & then almost immediately after with the inside. It’s a 1-2 body shot. #hogfbchat

@mt_stjohn, @CoachDingus, @Warhawks_oline
Yes, too many times in fact. That said, my guys aren’t flat-footed. And b-ball players don’t have their weight on their toes. Their weight (like OLs) is balanced with the whole foot on the ground. #hogfbchat
A4: Showing up. By showing up, not quitting as many millennials want to, you will be exposed to squats, cleans, stance, starts, sleds, chutes, and mentality. #hogfbchat
It's close to impossible for a player to stop a bull rush with the feet in that position. Players will immediately go to midfoot when pressed, because it's most stable and the brain won't allow otherwise. #Hogfbchat
