Hi all, so excited to be joining in tonight! I am currently a student in rural KS getting my education degree! Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say! #1stchat#ntchat#studentteacher#ChildrensLit
An empowered learner, to me is someone who is a life long learner. They are someone who is constantly listening and participating in learning opportunities. #GEN2108#1stchat
A1- An empowered learner is excited about their learning. They know why they are doing what they're doing- to what end it will serve and how to get there. #1stchat

A1- An empowered learner does not need/seek validation/approval from others in order to engage with a topic. The joy is in the learning itself and the rewards are inherent in the process. #1stchat

#1stchat#gen2108 an empowered learner is excited and their energy is contagious but yet they know when to listen and hear ideas of others and incorporate collaboration into the curriculum.
Q2: Now imagine an empowered classroom (real or imagined). What is happening there? What do you see? What do you hear? What are they doing and not doing? #1stchat
Katy, I like that you mentioned tackling challenges, because no one should be afraid to take on challenges. Especially empowered learners. #1stchat#GEN2108
Q2: Now imagine an empowered classroom (real or imagined). What is happening there? What do you see? What do you hear? What are they doing and not doing? #1stchat
A2: Students are making decisions about what they want to learn, and how they want to learn. Some are working alone, some working with others. There is a buzz and yet engagement. #1stchat
I do think that any educator who participates in edchats, book studies, classes for the sake of learning, not just recert. are empowered learners and are exactly what today's classrooms need. That's why I enjoy these so much-the like minded professionals. #1stchat
A2- I see their curiosities/questions being honoured. I see their knowledge/skills being valued. I see them excitedly sharing their learning with one another and I hear the happy buzz of engagement and there is evidence of authentic real-world connection everywhere. #1stchat
A2: WOW! An empowered classroom....students feel confident in their abilities. They work well to complete challenges. Students are able to take their learning to the next level. #1stchat
A2: An empowered classroom has lots of talk (students, not teacher). Interaction, movement. I would hear "What if I...?" or "What would happen if....?, "Maybe if..." #1stchat
A2. An empowered classroom, is well organized and is the best classroom environment for all of it's students. It provides healthy and productive learning opportunities. #GEN2108#1stchat

I like your point about the choice in learning. I think it should be student guided learning so that there are choices for their learning! #GEN2108#1stchat
Like others said: kids feel comfortable asking questions, helping each other out, treating each other fairly. It's a 'safe' place to learn = empowerment. #1stchat
I love your description. Why do you think empowered learners are also kind? I wonder if empowered learners are less frustrating, leaving room for more kindness. #1stchat
I believe they are empowered and want others to feel the same way they are. So they make sure to lift them up. They may also be more aware of their feelings. #1stchat
A2 in an empowered classroom students feel confident in their environment. students are allowed to create the noise (obviously being respectful), relevant questions are being asked, and students are answering their peers questions, lots of learning choices are avail. #1stchat
#1stchat#gen2108 A2 an engaged classroom I envision students not distracted my cellular devices and intrigued by the material of the lessons, introverts and extroverts feeling comfortable engaging in conversation and asking questions
Like others said: kids feel comfortable asking questions, helping each other out, treating each other fairly. It's a 'safe' place to learn = empowerment. #1stchat
I think empowered learners can be kind because they are comfortable with themselves. They aren't trying to prove their worth. They see their own strengths, and thus look for strengths in others. #1stchat
I love your description. Why do you think empowered learners are also kind? I wonder if empowered learners are less frustrating, leaving room for more kindness. #1stchat
Yes! This is a goal I have planned for next year - improve differentiation with more choices for different learners. Kids learn the way that's best for them. Not a cookie-cutter classroom. #1stchat
Interesting point..."distracted by device" How do you think empowered classrooms would use devices? I see it to give student voice, to collaborate and create. #1stchat

so glad you mentioned kindness. I like that you commented on how students are not trying to prove their worth. They can be kind because they don't need to tear others down! #1stchat
I agree, I feel devices should be used to collaborate. Devices should be used to our advantage in the classroom. To advance our learning not hinder it! #1stchat#GEN2108
Q3: Teachers give students time to explore. They offer resources and get to know their kids interests ,strengths and weaknesses. They give opportunities to inquire and figure things out. #1stchat

#1stchat#gen2108 I believe taking virtual tours of global communities and international pen pals as well as designing art projects and sharing personal stories through blogs while not sharing too much, (safety first) are great ways to use devices to enhance in class learning
A3: Allow students to experiment with strategies, figure things out for themselves or give minimal assistance. Allow the struggle to be the teacher. #1stchat
A3- I think it starts with your image of the child & shifting your focus to not just 'this year' but the child as a learner- how will this child succeed in every subsequent year? What strategies will help in the long term? What will ignite the spark and keep it lit? #1stchat
A3: We have to be the model of empowerment. We need to show excitement of learning, we need to be risk takers, we need to "shake up the status quo", we need to be kind, open, and willing to fail and then fix mistakes. #1stchat
A3. I think these teachers allow for a student guided classroom. It is importnat that teachers listen to their students and understand what works best for their students. #GEN2108#1stchat
Time is big. We have to be flexible to give them the time they need. So many times we get caught up in schedules and other things that tie us down. #1stchat
A3: I think Ts have to create an empowered environment by teaching growth mindset, building relationships & knowing our Ss. Making it ok to have a voice, offering a place where Ss feel safe and can learn best #1stchat
A3 students of empowered learners give the students choice, allow for dialogue to happen (even in 1st grade), give time, allow students to explore #1stchat

You said something so important. We MUST allow the struggle. That is where learning takes place. We can't run in and save...we are hindering that empowerment when we do too much. #1stchat
A3: Allow students to experiment with strategies, figure things out for themselves or give minimal assistance. Allow the struggle to be the teacher. #1stchat
I like that you said allow students to explore. Sometimes we get in a rush to get to 'final products' and forget about learning that happens during exploration. #1stchat

Yes! Teachers need to have a growth mindset and they need to be empowered learners as well. They can then lead their students to be empowered learners. #GEN2108#1stchat

#gen2108#1stchat global collaboration is key, now a days in business and education fields global communication lines are blurred there are so many ways to engage students and educators across the world
Totally agree with the fact that teachers should also be empowered learners! how can we expect our students to be empowered learners if we are not willing to also be. #1stchat
#1stchat#gen2108 A3 teachers of empowered learners take advantage of the fact students are engaged and they should stimulate curiosity and challenges to make them grow stronger as students
A4: I have Ss share their work and talk about how they did it, their thought process. They take questions from the class. Ss become the teacher. #1stchat
#1stchat#gen2108 I make myself vulnerable and approachable so that students arent afraid to open themselves up and let down barriers to have deeper more meaningful in class conversations.
A4: as we celebrate successes I also ask about who failed today and then we talk about what we learned through that, I want them to know failure and success both have a place and are OK, I also share my failures and successes #1stchat
A4: I am big on teaching strategies. I love giving problems in math before I teach a new concept...let them explore and try to find a solution. #1stchat
A4. I do not have my own classroom yet, but I always think it is important to spark conversation. The more we collaborate and learn from each other, the more creative we can be. #GEN2108#1stchat
A4: My students have choice in where they learn. We work a lot in groups. Many of my assessments are written assessments that ask each child their opinions and take aways rather than just asking questions. #1stchat
A4. We are studying the solar system as junior astronauts choosing foods, fitness, planets of study, creating aliens, creating rockets and communication systems. #1stchat

They have been researching together for the planet research project if they were interested in the same planet. I have just been modeling how to research and then they were able to pick what method (poster, model, report) for passion project. Now we are writing reports #1stchat

This was all the students- I made zero suggestions- they started seeing some commonalities- then narrowed down their choices to the top 3- shared their picks with others and then formed small research groups- some are going alone- and that's OK too #1stchat
A4: my ss each have a job and it's up to them to keep our room running, from calendar to recycles, teaching ownership and responsibility, we share our good things each morning and have class meetings at the end of each day. #1stchat
A4 I am a student teacher but I am facillitating a lesson on Friday to encourage Ss to explore coding. They are kindys and I am confident the Ss will be able to create codes using technology. https://t.co/gQHx1iv1Te#1stchat
#gen2108#1stchat one girl was upset about her grandmother who was being mistreated by her sister and didnt know how to respond as a kid. I told her to right to her great aunt to express her feelings and take the high road. And she received positive response from her in the end

A5: I really like @Woods1stgrade 's idea to make time to talk about mistakes...and how it helped them. We do that a little bit during reading share time. #1stchat
A5- One of my current goals (but that I wished I'd started earlier in the year) is to engage in zero formulaic writing. Everything must have an authentic purpose- letters, lists, notes- there are so many opportunities to share with a wider audience- no excuse not to #1stchat
A5: I think the Hour of Empower that was mentioned is interesting. I would like to explore that option more next year. For the rest of the year I want to continue to turn learning over to the students. #1stchat

A5. In my future classroom I would make sure that all my students feel comfortable sharing with me and their peers. Collaboration and conversation are extremely important for a classroom to grow together #GEN2108#1stchat
At the beginning of the year we read Fantastic Elastic Brain and we talk about how trying new things and making mistakes actually help grow your brain. We refer to this lesson all year long and it really helps reframe 'mistakes' as growth #1stchat

A6: I work hard to stay current, I read and take classes to keep my enthusiasm high. Always wanting to learn!! I want to be the best I can for my ss giving them what they need #1stchat
Q6 I love learning. If I'm interested in something I want to know all about it. I ask questions when I don't understand things. I get out of my comfort zone #1stchat
A6: I have felt more empowered since joining Twitter. Feel much more in charge of my PD and trying new things and learning from MY mistakes. I love this kind of learning...and I know my Ss will as well. #1stchat
It's great! Very accessible for all ages. We make 'brain slime' to go along with it so students can actually stretch it and feel its elasticity while we're reading the book. That's probably what they remember most- but whatever works! #1stchat

A6. I am empowered because I have the freedom accomplish the curriculum goals in my own way, using whatever strategies I choose. I love my school for that.#1stchat

A6 I’m still growing in this area which I guess in essence shows I’m empowered- I have an easy time encouraging others toward growth mindset but I’m definitely learning to embrace it for myself! I now feel empowered To take risks and not get down if I flop at first #1stchat
I love that you mentioned that. I also have the same freedom in my school and I'm so grateful. A great thing about Quebec is its unique 'cycle' system where students are given 2 years to meet most curricular expectations- lots of wiggle room for Ts and Ss #1stchat
Great to see that and to see your growth. I think we need to help our Ss also see growth and reflect on where they are at and where they want to be. #1stchat
