Tonight's #MTedchat!!! "Designing Effective Classroom Curriculum" 8:00 PM MT (What do you do, and why??) Plz RT and join. #samedchat (Inspired by @robertjmarzano's @ASCD)
Finally: “Over 1,100 curriculum books have been written since the turn of the [20th] century, each with a different version of what ‘curriculum’ means”. (Cubin, p. 221). #mtedchat
A1 Curriculum is comprised of the tools and resources you design to deliver the standards...including yearlong context maps and UBD units...learning from the queen @mariealcock#mtedchat
A1: Marzano: I define CLASSROOM curriculum design as the sequencing and pacing of content along with the experiences students have with that content.” #mtedchat (Was yours close?)
Q1. I'd lean on Dewey (#nerdalert) and echo what many of you are saying... "it is a continuous reconstruction, moving from the child's present experience out into that represented by the organized bodies of truth that we call studies" https://t.co/m00HFai0iB#mtedchat
Curriculum is a 4 lane highway, its the path the Ss navigate, and that path gives them many ways in which to get to their learning destination #mtedchat
A1: In the past, teachers drove the curriculum. Schools in the U.S. and abroad are beginning to see more student Choice and Voice, with personalized learning. #MTedchat
Great response.. I love that you incorporated the word reconstruction.. important to avoid rigidity. #mtedchat Teach the whole child, in the moment (and beyond). Make learning stick.

A2: #mtedchat The IB curriculum underlines the WHAT but the lesson I design needs to focus on the WHY. Unless the rationale is clear from the get go the incentive to learn and live the experience is half baked.
A2 - The @CollegeBoard designs the curriculum for AP Psych...I also include evidence-based learning strategies into my units to assist students with developing effective study skills. #MTedchat
A2 Sci units under #NGSS need to be built around #phenomena Unit direction has Ss figuring out how to understand & explain phenomena thru their experiences using their language #mtedchat
Right!? As I feared. How do we (teachers, departments, schools, standards-writers) sincerely invite students into the curriculum conversation? What does that look like? #MTedchat
I think seeking feedback through observation (are they engaged? Are they transferring learning into action?) and directly survey... Voice and Choice. #mtedchat
A2 part two:) content and skills are easy-the what we must learn based on standards...Getting at and aiding in student understanding in rich and meaningful ways is more complex. #mtedchat
A2. For units / the year, I craft big questions and ask students to write their own questions. Those evolve. Then, I only design the 'what' for key lessons, and support students leading the 'what' for the in-between #MTedchat
I'm truly a believer that districts w/solid implementation of Common Core ELA will see increased skills, particularly in writing & critical thinking... Thinking across texts & drawing from own experiences to determine understanding. Areas that don't buy in will struggle #mtedchat
A3 Give them a problem and get the heck out of their way as THEY discover Ts insert themselves too much, Ss need space to discuss argue & understand #MTedchat
A3. it's key to set up multiple authentic audiences - their peers, the school community, the broader community - in key moments for 'medium-stakes' performances #MTedchat
A4 - I'm lucky that my curriculum (psychology) is so applicable to life...allows Ss to more easily apply new knowledge to existing schemas better. #MTedchat
A3 so many great instructional strategies/favorite w undergrad Ss is Socratic seminar...learning so much about their thinking/understanding/misunderstanding #mtedchat
A4 - Great Question...spaced practice has been shown to increase retention of learning material...here's a practical way I do this in my class:
https://t.co/1Y6ByU2q1Q…
#MTedchat
A4. I love setting up multiple (and varied) situations for students to teach and lean from each other - #edcafes - based on #edcamps - are my favorite #MTedchat
A4 taught Ss UBD method/strategy of “WHERETO” and discuss the facets of understanding to create rich and meaningful opportunities for students #mtedchat
A4. Students need multiple interactions with increasing rigor to ensure retention of content. Detail level questioning will not get the job done. #MTedchat
@timlriley It's a Bruner philosophy... Essentially, it's a way to spiral through skill so Ss interact with info at point of readiness. https://t.co/5DaPT2AfL4 Common Core Anchor Standards are great example #mtedchat
A4) Enough time for practice, let them decide when they are ready to be assessed,a lot of station work! Let them know the purpose of the lesson. #mtedchat
Try this link instead https://t.co/cY8wq8su0Y (Some canned programs do this WAY too rigidly... ) #mtedchat Need to be strategic based on student/class need.
A4 continuous check-ins with students (formative) should drive your instruction. Identify the strategies that result in highest levels of learning and engagement #MtEdchat
Q6. what a great question! It's so interesting to see how people plan - what tools, texts, routines, conversations, whiteboards, etc. are 'just right' in the ongoing process #MTedchat
